Customer Reviews:
Pretty much everything you'd want to know........2007-05-30
I was surprised by just how comprehensive this book's knowledge base was. I'm not the new kid on the block either, I've been involved in several solar installations and many others with mixed-systems comprising micro-hydro and wind power as well. But this book still had a lot to offer, things I hadn't thought of, many that I will seek to apply in future installations.
One strength of this book is the author's reliance upon the experiences of others. Many points in the chapter are highlighted by interviews conducted with people (of various backgrounds and experience levels) who have lived and worked with renewable energy sources in their homes. It is as if the author, knowing that people listen to more sources, found a bunch of great people and added their thoughts as a way of saying,
Hey, if you don't take my word for it - listen to what people like you have told me." This aspect is great because I, at least, find it much easier to relate to the people and get a feel for how their experience went rather than the omniscient author telling you that everything is roses all the time.
All in all, this book really WAS surprisingly comprehensive - covering all the basics (and thensome) of the renewable energy sources that one would want to put into a home. If you read this book before you built your home (even if you weren't thinking about adding in renewable energy) I PROMISE you would get ten times your money's worth in energy savings. Because that's the bigger part of using renewable energy - saving as much energy as you can so that the little you can glean from the earth is used as wisely as it can be without running out in the middle of a shower (for instance).
I highly recommend this work, and will be buying copies for my friends (many of whom will be, or wish they could be building houses soon).
Be well!
Dr. Dominic Ebacher
From novice to pro, and enyone who learns by other people's stories..........2006-01-11
As a person beginning my education in sustainable home building, I found this book refreshing and encouraging, informative and conversational. Lots of other books are more technical and appropriate at certain times, of course, yet I found this authors style of creation simple in its ability to reach the novice and beyond, to anyone who learns by stories. Simultaneously, I found it a dynamic read, in the way that the stories he included spanned years of experience, trial and error, and wisdom of what our forefathers and mothers in this movement would have done differently. I enjoyed the basic education in how electricity works, and the emphasis on how important and simple (although maybe not always easy) it is to be ENERGY INDEPENDENT.
The Fluorescent Lamp of Experience.......2003-02-14
After living in the mountains for thirty years, Richard Perez, editor in chief of Home Power magazine, concluded that the key to security is independence. Of the many reasons to turn to more efficient, renewable energy sources, independence and self-reliance might be the most attractive to many Americans.
I don't expect everyone to follow Perez back into the wilderness, but it is unnecessary to imitate every aspect of the lives of these new pioneers in order to learn from them. You don't have to be a hippie to see what works. These folks have been testing the technology that may eventually make America independent again. Fortunately they are willing to let the rest of us benefit from their experience.
Potts calls his book an approach to homely science, reminding us that ecology derives from Greek and Latin words for home and household. It is also clear that he is trying to revive an entire world view. His "whole-home" approach encompasses technology, biology, religion, politics, and economics, and it doesn't always work. The attempt to say a little bit about everything, and to find it all connected, leads to disorganization, repetition, and confusion.
On the other hand, the book's variety makes it ideal for browsing and for introducing the topics one has to consider before living partially or completely off the grid. There are chapters on solar panels, wind turbines, hydro turbines, as well as sidebars on the costs of refrigeration, developments in window technology and insulation, and how to take care of deep-cycle batteries. Interspersed with these topics are interviews with homesteaders, who reveal what has changed since the first edition of Potts' book. The revision also includes a section of color photos of energy efficient homes, a glossary, and an annotated bibliography.
Most of the work the new pioneers have been doing over the years has been either on their own or within a community of fellow homesteaders, engineers, and independent dealers, without the assistance of government. What they have learned deserves honest consideration.
Interesting for the earthy types, useless for green suburbs.......2002-01-20
The book was easy to read without much detail regarding brands, specifics and the 'devil of the details'.
writing, after installing our new energy star washer we noticed that we could wash clothes even during cloudy days. Not exactly a comment that would relate to the 90% of the masses.
I thought this book would cover all sorts of homes, but instead the well versed marketing tricked me into believing that.
No where did it cover a relatively normal house, builder etc, that incorporated the inxpensive changes necessary for a home to be more energy efficient, nor cover what appliances, were good or bad to avoid. It was a buy a plot of land in nowhereville, 'sell' part of it to other earthies, and build a straw or dirt filled tire house.
Um, where's the information about manufactured homes that come super-insulated with low power appliances, and PV from the factory for the other 90%.
If you want to see the types of people that are the ones that the congress, senate, DOE, and EPA see as pro-independent, it's no wonder there's little public knowledge of solar, wind and water power.
As for the pro-nuke guy, if my first exposure was this book, I'd be as short-sighted as him, the solar and wind CAN make a difference, but it's gotta be for the masses.
Alternative energy or Nuclear?.......2001-02-09
Being an architect I am really concerned with sustainable living and green design. Once upon a time I was thinking that alternative energy sources would be the future of the energy sector, but as I read and read about these kind of energy sources lots of question marks appeared in my mind. As I deepened my studies about the subject I came to a conclusion that hoping to achieve our energy from sun, wind etc. is a very romantic idea (I am not against romanticism) and it is not very realistic. Now I know that THE CLEANEST AND CHEAPEST SOURCE OF ENERGY IS NUCLEAR ENERGY. This book tells stories of ordinary people who tried to achieve enough energy from sun, wind etc. for their daily use, with too much effort which I really appreciate. But just baking a cake in an oven or any other simple daily event musn't require that kind of effort and money. I thank to this book for awakening me about nuclear energy by showing the other side of the coin. Anyway if you are living off-the-grid and really really want to use PV's or wind mills to turn your TV on this book may help by telling how others succeeded(?) to do that.

fundamentally flawed.......1998-06-06
This flash manual, which is intended to teach not only the operation of the Nikon SB-25 and 26 but also the principles of flash photography, is filled with errors right from the beginning pages. For anyone unfortunate to have this book, see page 14 for half a dozen fundamental errors. The other thing which is annoying about this book and others in the same series is that it reads like Nikon marketing literature. Nikon's own manuals contain no marketing at all and although they are more difficult to understand, they are at least correct. Save your money.
This book is THE! owners manual for your SB-26 Speedlight........1998-03-07
Nikon's TTL light metering technology changed all the rules of flash photography. This Magic Lantern Guide spells them all out in plain, easy to follow concepts. After applying what I learned I find I now have more fun than ever with my clothes still on!

Page Turning.......2004-04-17
The series is awesome - can't wait until the last one (#8) comes out in May.
It was okay, but I definitely prefer Maico 2010.......2003-04-29
This is by the same person who did Maico 2010, and it shows in the character designs, and the stories. Red Prowling Devil is very good, but I just didn't enjoy it as much as I have Maico.
Be warned, the technical details of the planes and cars are many. And there are a few snippets of military speak thrown into the mix. This adds to the flavor of the story, but it was hard to understand at times.
Except for that one bit, I really enjoyed this book.
A look at the battlefields in the air and in the heart..........2003-04-15
Naomi accidentally kills hundreds of civilians in a horrific airplane crash and is sentenced to 1000 years. She works for as an airborne assassin for an organization that is blackmailing her by threatening to harm her invalid brother or beloved boyfriend. So, she continues to fight, but with each strike she feels less like a human and more like a monster. But can she escape this life of murder and pain...?
Not for children, this book has several scenes where Naomi and her boyfriend are making love, or just pictures of her nude. And the adult themes of regret, jealousy, hatred, anger, and despair would be hard for younger audiences to understand. The action moves fast and the dogfights are spectatular, but short.
I loved Maico and I like this one! Bring more of his work into the English repertoire!

Customer Reviews:
Never Pay Commission Again.......2006-12-05
I found this book extremely informative. My house sold in 90 days in a fairly stagnant market. The downloadable forms were perfect. Once completed, I took them to a lawyer and he asked me what exactly I expected him to do since the paperwork was all in order. My costs were 1/10 of what a broker would have charged.
Knowledgeable author, easy style.......2006-03-25
I'm hoping to sell my condo myself next month and bought this book in preparation; I'm about 3/4 of the way through, and am feeling much more comfortable with the idea of selling my house myself, and have a better idea of what to expect - when showing, when negotiating, etc. Definitely a helpful book!
Great book!, Add a flat-fee MLS .......2006-03-20
This was HIGHLY INFORMATIVE. It really helped the most! I recommend reading it in it's entirety. If not, you will miss out on much needed tips. However as a FSBO, to really get more online marketing exposure for your home, you need a flat-fee MLS service. With that and this book, I am sure you can be sold soon and without paying an agent a full 6% commission.
Useful for first time FSBO.......2005-09-12
I thought the book was very useful. The only down side is there was no informatioon on using the flat fee service for listing a home. Definitely by a real estate agent as they don't want you to use that method. Did it anyway and it worked fine. The book was good for making sure everything else was in order. Helped reduce the stress of selling for the first time and by doing it without an agent.
Great Investment.......2005-08-09
Plenty of information and 'how to' details. Author covers all angels and gives very simple solutions and suggestions. Buy this book before you sign with a realtor!

For Sale By Owner is a four step program that teaches individuals to sell their own homes in a correct and professional manner. It teaches them how to price their home correctly, how to properly present their home, how to market it effectively and how to close the sale.
Customer Reviews:
ZERO stars, or worse.......2003-05-30
WARNING: Lee Burbidge IS a "sleazy salesman", through and through. I worked for him and his sons for a few years, and became very intimately acquainted with their business practices. Lee's son Brae, by the way, interestingly enough also posted a review on this page (see the September 10th entry). I'd be suspect of any review of this "book" posted from their homebase of Utah. The Burbidge's are not interested in providing quality services to the public. They are long-time seminar shysters who will take advantage of anyone unlucky enough to wander into their web.
Apply the cost of this towards a real-estate attorney.......2000-06-16
I can guarantee the people that sold their houses in one day didn't need this "book" to do it. They would have sold regardless. There's very little real information in here. It basically tells you to clean up your house and make it presentable (common sense). Most of the audio talks about writing a newspaper add (just read some of the ones by realtors and mimic their styles). It really lacks the most important information needed by any home seller, marketing. Newspaper ads can work, but it shouldn't be the only technique used. The author doesn't even touch other areas of marketing like flyers, grocery stores, local businesses, the internet, or sending letters to all your neighbors offering a finder's fee. He also assumes everyone sells houses in the summer and fails to talk about what to do in the off peak times.
Most of the photocopied examples you can get from any decent real-estate attorney. Since you'll probably hire one anyway, save your money on this waste of paper.
Business Builder.......2000-05-27
I'm a real estate agent who work mostly with Buyer, a Buyer Agent. I use the package to introduce myself to "for seller by owners" because I know that most of them need help in selling their house and that they will become buyers when they do. This "for sale by owner" package has been successful for me as well as the people I give one too. It is a great well done workbook, video and audio tape presentation. It teaches the basics in easy to understand terms. I recommend it to agents who are looking for business builders and to anyone who is trying to sell their own home. It is easy for anyone who is new to the real estate field to understand and use. Buy it and try it. It works for professionals who are providing service added marketing and for the new comer.
Look for a different book.......2000-05-17
Don't buy this!
The "book" is a bunch of photocopied papers, many of which are just there as space filler (e.g., a ream of sample appraisal forms -- you already saw these when you bought your house, there's no need to see multiple pages of the appraisal form for another propert).
The video is especially bad; it just drips sleaze. It conveys the image of the sleazy salesman remininscent of the cheap promotional videos that you'll occasionally catch on the TV.
Great Book.......2000-05-10
I bought the kit and followed the instruction. With some luck, I sold my house in one day open house. The kit is still brand new. I am going sell it in the auction site. Thanks to the author. It is my first time selling house by my own and I know nothing about the selling before I got this kit. It is a wonderful experiences.

Book Description
Few things grieve the heart of a Christian parent more than unsaved or wicked children. It was this concern that prompted Edward Lawrence, a 17th century Puritan pastor, to write this booklet to his own children. The thought of being eternally separated from them was a tormenting thought to him.
In seven short chapters Lawrence shows them his loving heart and desire for their salvation. There is strong encouragement to both parents and children alike. He shows that many of the Scripture's most godly characters had ungodly children. He does not blame parents for the spiritual condition of their unsaved children. Rather, he suggests directions for nurturing them towards Christ.

Book Description
"In 1963
there was no way I could have known, sitting in a classroom on that beautiful campus in Ohio, that by raising my hand I would be going to war in Vietnam and that I would see things, hear things and do things that most people cannot imagine."James Joyce.
The author was drawn into the United States Army through ROTC, and went through training to fly helicopters in combat over Vietnam. His experiences are notable because he flew both Huey "Slicks" and Huey "Gunships": the former on defense as he flew troops into battle, and the latter on offense as he took the battle to the enemy. Through this book, the author relives his experiences flying and fighting, with special attention given to his and other pilots' day-to-day livessuch as the smoke bombing of Disneyland, the nickname given to a United States Army-sponsored compound for prostitution. Some of the pilots Joyce served with survived the war and went on to have careers with commercial airlines, and many were killed.

Ratings from a woman .......2007-02-09
As a woman reader I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I learned so much in this book, about flying, Vietnam, rats (UGH) I knew it was hard over there but didn't really realize some of the hardships till I read this book. The author's writing is very easy to understand, you don't need a dictionary beside you, and the humour was great. You got some really good laughs and some sadness also. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.
Introduction to U.S. helicopter warfare in South-Vietnam.......2007-01-10
Should you consider reading only one book about the U.S. helicopter pilots in South-Vietnam that bravely fought almost 40 years ago, then, "Pucker Factor 10" is the best choice.
Mr. James Joyce there flew the two most used types: "slicks" and "gunships" thus covering two major aspects of the tactical helicopter warfare successfully used in SEA. This is what this book tells you.
Excellent Read.......2006-05-16
I had to choose a war memoir for a term paper this semester in my english class...and I was very happy that I chose to read Pucker Factor 10. The book is very enlightening, and an interesting read. I found myself always WANTING to read more. James Joyce is a wonderful writer and he reveals emotions and specifics of war that you dont even realize. I highly suggest this book to everyone. I normally dont read memoirs like this but after reading his I want to read more!
A Must Read.......2005-11-19
James Joyce has written a truly excellent book. Mr. Joyce has successfully included every human emotion possible. His real life experiences are a combination of both desperate hours and uplifting moments, with a side of unmistakable humor. I would recommend this book to anyone remotely interested in the Vietnam era. Definately a MUST READ.
War story from a human angle.......2003-07-23
I'm not normally a reader of non-fiction war stories, especially in first person, but "Pucker Factor 10" caught my attention from the beginning all the way to the very end. Joyce brings the reader into the realm of realism, from family history, personal apprehensions, his somewhat inadvertant role as a helicopter pilot during the heat of battle, his impressions of soldiers and his humanity toward the enemy which brings chills to the reader. Meanwhile, just when I least expected, I found myself belly laughing his wit. This book is a must for anyone who enjoys true-to-lie accounts of how it was in the air trenches.
