The Persian garden's inspirational role has, however, extended far beyond the land of its origin; its precepts have exerted a profound influence on garden design around the world. The Persian Garden: Echoes of Paradise chronicles the history of the Persian garden, from the magnificent sanctuaries and hunting parks of fifth-century b.c. Persepolis to the magical nightingale gardens of nineteenth-century Tehran. All were seen as a kind of earthly paradise (the English word paradise has its roots in the old Persian word pairi-daeza meaning a walled space). This is a great book to have, it begins to illustrate ancient Iran historical castles from Ctesiphon all the way to Safavid Dynasty of Iran and how Iranian people has been contributing to arts, agriculture and watering system of Iran which comes to point of paradise. And paradise is a Persian word.

The book also can be used for travel agency because it has countless colorful pictures about Iran.

I loved this book. And it's not because I've been to some of the places that are studied in the book. The pictures take you to the gardens that were at the heart of the great residences of kings and leaders...In a time when few get the chance to see the beauty of Iran and the culture that arose from it, this book shows a world of culture, history and color. "Never Eat More Than You Can Lift" is a goulash, a mix of this and that and a lot of other things.

It's a quote book and the source for Twain's swipe at American cookery. It's also a cookbook with recipes for chutney ham rolls, baked caramel apples and garlic grilled okra. It's an advice book with hints for making custard, peeling cucumbers and telling the difference among English, American, Dijon, German and Chinese mustards.

Weaving their way among these mini-essays are 1,500 thoughts, one-liners and musings about food. Author Sharon Tyler Herbst casts a wide net for her quotations, from Arab emir Abd-al Kadir ("Coffee is the common man's gold, and like gold, it brings to every man the feeling of luxury and nobility.") to writer and editor William Zinsser ("[The hot dog] . . . a twin pillar of democracy along with Mom's apple pie. In fact, now that Mom's apple pie comes frozen and baked by somebody who isn't Mom, the hot dog stands alone.") This book has many, if not all of the most famous quotes of today. The book is very well organized and meticulous in its details. Fr. Simpson has obvously spent many long hours organizing and researching. The final product is really fantastic!! You must buy this book!

Error prone.......2002-03-22

Simpson's attributes authorship of a Theodore Roosevelt quote to John F. Kennedy.

Theodore Roosevely wrote "History as Literature" in 1913. In this work he wrote the famous quote:
'It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, and comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.'

Simpson's wrongly attributes the quote to Kennedy.

Wise, Witty & Wonderful.......1999-05-17

Most books of quotations tend to emphasize the classics, so it is nice to see one concentrate on the wise, witty, wonderful, and just plain odd things being said today. It contains "approximately 11,300 quotations with special emphasis on the years since 1988", by well-known and lesser known people. It is the sort of book you can open for a moment, and close an hour later. I found it fascinating.

The book is divided into three overarching categories: the World, Humankind, and Communication and the Arts. These are further broken down into more specific categories, such as Law, Education, Family Life, Humor, Art, Films, and Literature--and many others. Most of these are then further broken down. For instance, Literature consists of Writers and Editors, Poets, and Critics.

Some of the authors represented are Bill Clinton, Prince Charles, Oprah Winfrey, Robert Frost, John D. Rockefeller, Grace Hopper, Warren Bennis, and many, many others. As you can see, they are an eclectic bunch.

The quotes themselves may be interesting in their own right, or appropriate to a particular occasion, or the original words of something that has moved into our modern ways of thought. Like any book of quotations, the reader always wonders why some things were included, and others left out, but that is part of the fun of reading quote books.

There are three extensive indexes: Source (i.e. Author), Subjects, and Keyword. Attributions are always given for each quote.

An Awful Book.......1999-05-02

I have allowed this book at least twenty chances, but each time I find only dribble and white bread. Simpson's is useless. Rather than allow it to continue to take up my precious shelf space, I'm donating mine to the Friends of the Library sale

Okay, depends, but certainly value for money.......2004-09-10

This book consists of 208 quotes on 66 categories (affliction, angels, atonement....divine humility..libration..wives, worry), with one quote on each page. I like some of the selections, but not all. Of course that's very subjective but I prefer to the Streams of the Desert type of presentation that put quotes + scriptures in contexts. If you just want a book of quotes for your easy reference despite its 80% A5 size and thickness, it's okay but certainly good value for money.
