        Book Description

Little Mouse decides to make a painting. But when she shows the painting to her friends, they all have their own ideas about what's in the picture-and no one will listen to what Little Mouse has to say about it!

Diane Wolkstein's many-layered story celebrates the surprises of friendship and the joy of creativity-and Little Mouse's circle of friends is brought irresistibly to life in Maryjane Begins' exquisite, jewel-like illustrations. First published in 1992 to great praise and attention, this beloved story is now available in paperback for the first time.

The beautiful illustrations help make this book one of my favorite childhood stories. It is a heartwarming story of a little mouse who is an artist. She captures her dearest friends in a painting, in which they all see just themselves. "Little Mouse's Painting is a story that can be enjoyed by everyone.

Beautiful illustations, sweet as pie story and a lesson to learn for young and old. Little Mouse paints a picture and all her friends see something different in it. It will become a family favorite.

        Book Description

A new and stunning book of photographs and essays from the photographer and writer of Hudson River Journey.

Created in 1892 as patchwork of private and public lands with neither an entrance gate nor an admission fee, Adirondack Park is not only celebrated as America's First Wilderness, it is also truly the first people's park—a vast region where nature and culture coexist. Adirondack High illuminates this relationship with its striking photography and lithe, thoughtful text.

With a masterful use of light and texture, Hardie Truesdale, a renowned nature photographer for more than 30 years, captures the sublimity of the Adirondacks in some of its most compelling vistas. Truesdale works as a painter would, carefully seeking out each scene with his 50 pounds of large-format camera equipment. Veteran travel writer Joanne Michaels adds further resonance to Truesdale's images with word. The result is a book that captures the true spirit of the Adirondacks.

I am disappointed by this book. I am left with the impression that the photographer simply didn't spend enough time in the woods. Some of the photos are quite stunning, but the majority of them are not. The lengthy captions only add to this impression. They often try to excuse lackluster images by lamenting the difficulty of the hike, the fact that his equipment malfunctioned, and how the weather didn't cooperate. Those are things anybody who's taken a hike with a camera has experienced. As a professional, his job is to spend the long hours to get perfect shots, discard the imperfect ones, and then not moan about how difficult the whole process was. It is also disappointing, to someone who knows the Adirondacks well, that the photographer limited his outings to the most accessible and popular summits. The views from these summits are wonderful to experience first hand, but as published photographs they border on cliché.

I didn't read much of the test, but the pctures were spectacular. They are on a par with some other photographers.
Again, I bought this for Special Collections at our local college. They are very pleased to have it.

When top New Yorker magazine contributor, Joseph Farris drew these cartoons in the late 1990's, he saw things that few others saw. Greed, deceit, fraud, theft of shareholders' assets--all the elements of today's headlined corporate scandals, violations of ethics, bogus accounting, and corporate governance failures are grist for the devastatingly funny and deadly accurate cartoons in this sweeping indictment of business behavior that cost shareholders billions.

              Release Date: 2002-11-11

              Book Description

Why do people buy health insurance? Conventional theory holds that people purchase insurance because they prefer the certainty of paying a small premium to the risk of getting sick and paying a large medical bill. Conventional theory also holds that any additional health care that consumers purchase because they have insurance is not worth the cost of producing it. Therefore, economists have promoted policies—copayments and managed care—to reduce consumption of this additional, seemingly low-value care.

This book presents a new theory of consumer demand for health insurance. It holds that people purchase insurance to obtain additional income when they become ill. In effect, insurance companies act to transfer insurance premiums from those who remain healthy to those who become ill. This additional income generates purchases of additional high-value care, often allowing sick persons to obtain life-saving care that they could not otherwise afford.

Regarding risk, the new theory relies on empirical studies showing that consumers actually prefer the risk of a large loss to incurring a smaller loss with certainty. Therefore, if consumers purchase insurance, it is not because they desire to avoid risk. Instead, the new theory suggests consumers simply pay a premium when healthy in exchange for a claim on additional income (effected when insurance pays for the medical care) if they become ill.

Health insurance is substantially more valuable to the consumer under the new theory. The new theory moreover implies that copayments and managed care—central health policies of the last 30 years—were directed at solving problems that largely did not exist. Because these policies either reduced the amount of income transferred to ill persons or limited access to valuable health care, they may have done more harm than good. The new theory also provides a solid theoretical justification for insuring the uninsured and for implementing national health insurance.

1 out of 5 stars Simplistic and Redundant.......2006-02-13

I had hoped that this book would be intellectually satisfying. Instead, I found the book to be terribly written, overly simplistic, and adding nothing additional to this area of law.

All of the anecdotes were obvious and uninspiring. The book tries to cover too much, in the end, becoming an exercise in intellectual futility and redundancy. If you read the introduction, then you have a concise summary of the book, making a full read absolutely superfluous and an absolute waste of time.

This reads like an elementary school textbook. You'll learn more about professional responsibility watching The Practice.

              4 out of 5 stars Unorthodox - But Interesting.......2005-12-10

Down-grading moral hazard by compartmentalizing it so as to examine each piece is interesting but I am not sure that this is correct. This book ought to be read simply because it presents a different point of view. At times, however, the math is all backwards in terms of constraints and objective functions. Possibly this leads to the confusion?

                            5 out of 5 stars A Remarkable Work on a Remarkable Man.......2000-08-22

You can best judge a person by the company he keeps; and in Clyde Wilson's case he has been keeping very good company indeed.

In this book, the editor of the papers of John Calhoun tells the story of one of the defenders of Calhoun's principles, James Johnston Pettigrew. The portrait is of a man who is engaging and noble.

When you visit Gettysburg, stand at the North Carolina monument and gaze across the field at the copse of trees; you will be standing at the spot where Pettigrew and his men began their march to glory. As Wilson's portrait of Pettigrew makes clear, and as any serious and honest student of the struggle for Southern independence should know, these were men who fought for a variety of reasons. In Pettigrew's case, it was to preserve a substantial measure of the world that America had inherited from Europe against a foe bent on destroying that world in the name of an abstract principle.

These were not, in short and contrary to the simplistic explanations of the conflict that dominate public discourse today, men who marched into the cannon's mouth with dreams of masters whipping slaves in their hearts. On the contrary, they were men who believed fervently that they were resisting the tyranny of a government that was fighting to keep them where they would rather not be; and in this, they, not Lincoln and his generals, were the real heirs of the American Revolution.

It is through reading the work of scholars like Professor Wilson that we can honestly approximate the reasons for this last (on the Confederate side) just as well as necessary war in America's story. For unlike this rather partisan review, the book is soberly written and the story unfolds in the measured tones of a man who has absorbed the lessons of his heroes.

5 out of 5 stars The lost son of the Confederacy.......2000-04-18

One of the most overlooked sons of the South, whose early death is overshadowed his brilliant career, and what could have been, some said he could have been president ,nothing was impossible, this little book gives a good impression of a man worthy of much more attention than been given, i can only recommend it, and hope that you will bring it home and treasure it for many years to come.Christian (Denmark)
