Martha Schwartz views landscape design as an artistic medium and her gardens embrace unexpected materials, vibrant colors, and a minimum of plant life. Based on traditional landscape design models her finished products present a challenging vision of nature, landscape, and design. The Vanguard Landscapes and Gardens of Martha Schwartz presents 32 visionary projects by this Boston original.

Martha Schwartz has been, pushing the boundaries of garden design since her first 15 minutes of fame. In 1980 "The Bagel Garden" landed her on the cover of Landscape Architecture Magazine. In this installation, located at 190 Marlborough Street (her own front yard), she arranged bagels in two evenly spaced rows, atop purple aquarium gravel, around the perimeter of a pre-existing formal box hedge all surrounded by iron railings. Captured in beautiful photographs it is easy to see how she started making waves.

The Vanguard Landscapes includes other Boston projects like the "Necco Garden", an installation at MIT, composed of geometrically arranged Necco wafers and car tires painted in pastel shades. And "The Splice Garden", based on two classical garden models, a French garden with hedges severely clipped in geometric forms and a Japanese Zen garden with raked paths that intend to mimic nature. Rendered in green aquarium gravel and Astroturf her vision fit in with the lack of water for the site and the inability for the roof to hold up the weight of a real garden.

Not all fun and games, she transformed the plaza in front HUD in Washington DC into an interesting and friendly space relying on the design motifs of Marcel Brauer, the buildings' architect. And the Jacob Javits Plaza in NYC received the classical treatment of a parterre de broderie made up of green painted NYC park benches.

Let's Give this Book Another Look.......2000-10-26

I studied under Michael Dennis in graduate school and was strongly influenced by his approach to history. I think we'd benefit from rereading this history of a building type. It provides us with a format for analyzing the evolution of architectural and urban types over time, with proper acknowledgment of parallel developments in politics and economy. I urge students of architecture history and urbanism to look closely at this book and study the implications of Professor Dennis' argument.

good journalism anecdotes.......2007-02-08

if you're researching media coverage of big, american events (especially the Cold War, presidential races, etc), this book has a few good anecdotes. specifically, i like the ones about choosing Time's Man of the Year and how secretive that process was. they even had decoy "winners" to keep snoopers off the trail of the real winner.

Required for CFP course; not sure why.......2007-07-04

This book is difficult to use for studying for the CFP exam, because it is essentially unindexed. The topics are not very thorough, and so I found it hard to answer questions in my homework even after carefully perusing the relevant chapters. I think what is missing is enough analysis to help you APPLY the rules.

I am not sure that it would be much more useful for an employee benefits manager.

Text Book For Retirement Planning.......2006-11-10

I needed this book for a Retirement Planning class in preparation for a CFP certificate. The book was a better value than from other sources, and I received it in time for my first class. This is my third class in Financial Planning and the text seems to be aimed at the practitioner in the field; so, it is somewhat difficult. However, it is very complete.

Useful textbook.......2006-07-30

I am enrolled in the Certified Financial Planner designation program. Tools and Techniques of Employee Benefit and Retirement Planning is the textbook for the Retirement Planning module. I found this to be the most useful and practical textbook in the course. It is a book that will remain on my shelf for future reference long after I finish the designation program. The information in the textbook in written in a practical manner. It is easy to understand, well-organized and to the point.

Worse than the Worst PowerPoint Presentation.......2005-02-03

If ever you've sat through a presentation in which the speaker followed a PowerPoint template and asked yourself, "Could anything be worse than this?", this book is the answer and the answer is "Yes, much worse!"
Stephan Leimberg may know something about employee-benefit and retirement planning but his writing skills might best be used to torture prisoners at Abu Ghraib.
For chapter after chapter, he follows the same deadly template: "What is it?, When is it indicated?, Advantage, Disadvantages, Design Features." For paragraph after paragraph, he follows the same hackneyed formula: Bland, meaningless string- I can't say sentence; so I have to resort to computer language to describe the assemblages of words he puts between periods- followed by another string that begins with "however", "although", or "but." Apparently he didn't write this book; he word processed it. Having conjured up an incoherent notion, he characteristically begins the next sentence with something along the lines of "This can often...." What the "this" refers to, not even he could figure out. As if all these travesties were not awful enough, he greatly prefers the passive over the active voice.
Besides being useful in the war on terror, the book might serve well for beginning courses on "How to Edit Pitiful Writing." Almost every sentence contains at least one example of how not to write.
Well, now I've told the truth and feel guilty for trashing the book and its author. Is there something nice I can say about Stephan Leimberg? The nicest thing I can think of to say is this: Maybe he didn't actually write the book.

Not for average consumer.......2004-05-21

I do not recommend this book as a main source of information for the average reader. It is informational, but probably incomplete and not useful in deciding which plan to implement. It is used as a supplement (not even the main textbook) in an advanced Certified Financial Planning (CFP) course. Students in this course already have proven knowledge of key concepts regarding taxes, investments, risk management-insurance, etc. This is tough education/training that is being undertaken by people who's main job is (will be) to advise on these subjects.

Informative But Organized Poorly........2004-04-22

The other review for this book refers to it as dry. Frankly, I have yet to read a riveting book on the retirement plan regulations. Liemberg touches on all the relevent topics that can arise when planning a retirement program for a company or an individual. What makes the book so tedious is that so much of the first 250 pages covering the various retirement saving vehicles rehash the same ERISA/IRS regulations every chapter. Chapters 25 through 27 which sumarize these regulations should be at the beginning of the book and then each chapter covering a retirement plan would only need a table referring to them. Liemberg instead tortures the readers with them in virtually every chapter from Ch.s 8 - 24. The meat of the book is then followed by about 25 short chapters covering all sorts of additional corporate benefits such as life and health insurance and reimbursement plans. Leimberg should be applauded for including so many topics but should have gotten his act together with the organization after 8 editions. For those of you that need to read this for the CFP or related professional tests, I suggest reading chapters 25-27 before reading Ch.s 8-24.

Poorly Written Textbook.......2004-02-21

This is a poorly written textbook. It is dry, uninformative and lacks any cohesive organization that would make the material easier to understand. The author uses a set template for each topic (Advantages, Disadvantages, Tax Implications etc.) that sometimes fits and sometimes does not fit the topic at hand. In more than one case, there are bullet items that repeat the same text as previously bulleted items. This is just sloppy editing and a lack of attentiveness ...

Good to see a useful kitchen book for substituting ingredients. I was tired of seeing all those expensive ingredients and now I can use less expensive alternatives. I'm talking money and calories here. This book will help you figure out how Cooking Light creates all those lower-fat versions of recipes readers send in.

A Great Guide for Understanding Troop Dispositions in Civil War Battles .......2007-05-02

The Conservation Fund's title "The Civil War Battlefield Guide" in my opinion is an invaluable tool for understanding the flow and troop dispositions of several Civil War battles.

In all, there are maps and troop movements for around 60 Civil War engagements and range from smaller battles such as Cloyd's Mountain to major engagements like Gettysburg. Another important feature of the book is the inclusion of modern-day roads included in the maps so the reader and battlefield visitor can better understand where the battle was fought in relation to where he/she may be standing at the time (assuming, of course, that the reader is on the battlefield at the time).

My only real complaint is that some bloody battles (Franklin, Nashville, etc.) were left out. However, the book does an overall good job of including most of the major engagements.

An excellent read and valuable battlefield tour aid. Read and enjoy! Recommended.

Must have Historical Guide to the Civil War Battles .......2006-05-21

This is one of the best books to have to study the civil war locations, and tour the battles. It has superb topographical maps of the battle area's.

It also has more information on the battles and different topic's on the civil war.

I have never been to any of the battles back east, since I have lived in the Midwest and Arizona, so I wish the book had more pictures of the area's then and now. I have talked to a few people and it is sad that we are losing some of these battlefields to land development

Indispensable.......2005-11-02

I do not live near many of the major battlefield sites, and I have never had this guide in my possession when visiting any battlefields so I cannot comment on its "real-time" usefulness, but I can say that having this guide has been quite valuable in personal study. The maps cleverly overlay the North/South troop placements and movements on modern topographic renderings that include today's highways and other developments. So, before or after a live visit to a particular battlefield, these maps will help you to place the precise historic details in the context of, say, the visitor's center or other modern landmarks (like roads) that can be recognized. I have also found the narrative descriptions to be both brief and comprehensive enough to supplement my readings for particular battles. For instance, I am reading Cozzen's difficult study now about Chickamauga. Having this guide at hand, I can refresh myself on the overview of the battle, and thus better absorb and enjoy the expert details of the book that I'm reading. The chronological order of the battles also provides a great overview of the entire war at a glance (in case, for example, you're not sure how the two Bull Run battles fit together, or how Chickamauga relates to Chattanooga, or how either of these relates to Gettysburg or Vickburg). Lastly, this is just a great book for browsing if you are interested in the Civil War.

Great Civil Touring aide book.......2005-08-20

I bought this book because i was working for a battlefield in the Park Service this summer and I had some free time to see other Battle fields in the surrounding areas: Richmond, Cold Harbor, Fredericksburg, Antietam, Harper's Ferry, Malverin Hill. And this book is just what I needed, because sometimes the best thing is just a concise history to understand with great detailing maps for comprehension and this has it. I value mine on a Civil War Battlefield trips

A must-have resource.......2003-02-16

I took a group of college students on a "civil wargasm" last spring---to Gettysburg, Antietam, and dozens of sites in Virginia. We took a parcel of books and maps. This is the one we referred to more than any other. By laying out the battle over a modern map, this guide makes it easier to understand what happened where, and definitely enhances a visit to any site, large or small. It is especially useful for stops at battle sites that are only commemorated by historical markers, and for sites that have nearly disappeared under freeways and housing developments. If you plan to visit Civil War sites anywhere, this is the first book you should buy.

Blew My Mind.......2003-04-01

Wow and heavy come to mind when I read this comprehensive 3rd edition of international politics. It's a wealth of information and is more effective if you read it w/ Mansbach's Reader.

I found that as a first time student of international poltics, this book is more for people who have a basic understanding and foundation of what the subject matter is. Not to say that's its completely confusing or anything, but certain terms aren't defined anywhere and you might have trouble what he's trying to say. It's not too difficult to grasp though. The concepts are fairly easy to understand and Mansbach, for the most part, does a great job of that.

However, in some chapters, he doesn't explain himself well enough (again, for those who are probably know more) for me and I intially got confused. You have to be careful when reading this text. His sentences were a bit verbose and I got lost in what he was trying to say. He also has a tendency in some areas to change topics under designated topic headings but are loosely connected. Perhaps it's b/c I am not fully aware of the context in which he is speaking.

Mostly, I enjoyed reading it, even if it made my head hurt after a while. I would suggest this to anyone who has an interest in international politics, or at least as a reference. It's quite a valuable source. He does a great job of showing how everything is linked and gives great examples. He also refers back to chapters and tells the reader if he is going to explain further in other chapters as well. He also gives a detailed bibliography of all his sources used for each chapter which allows readers to find these books and research further. If you read this w/ his Reader, it makes things much easier!
