Description:
Macroalgae possess different defense mechanisms in response to herbivory. Some species produce anti-herbivore secondary metabolites, but production of these substances can be costly. Therefore, algae may produce defensive metabolites only in response to herbivory (inducible defense) or defend particular parts of the alga differentially (within-alga variation). In the present study, we examined whether two species of brown algae from the SE-Pacific show evidence of inducible chemical defense (non-polar compounds) or within-alga variation of defense, which we estimated in form of palatability of differently treated algae to amphipod grazers (with live algae and agar-based food containing non-polar algal extracts). In Glossophora kunthii (C. Agardh) J. Agardh, we observed an increase in palatability after algae were acclimated for 12 days without grazers. Subsequent addition of grazers for 12 days then resulted in a reduction of palatability indicating the existence of inducible defense. After removal of grazers for 12 days, these induced effects again disappeared. The reaction of G. kunthii was triggered even by the mere presence of grazers, which suggests that this alga can respond to waterborne cues by reducing palatability. Effects were only found for agar-based food containing non-polar extracts, but not for live algae, suggesting that some parts of the algae are undefended. Our second experiment on within-alga variation confirmed that only apical (growth region) and basal parts (near the holdfast region) of G. kunthii are defended against herbivores. For the second species, Macrocystis integrifolia Bory, the first experiment revealed no induction of defense, while the second experiment on within-alga variation showed that amphipods avoided basal parts and in particular stipes of M. integrifolia but only in live algae. Although both studied algal species differed substantially in their defensive strategies, their reaction was independent of the presence or absence of UV radiation. Thus, it appears that UV effects play only a minor role in anti-herbivore defense, which is in accordance with most previous studies.

This book is a wonderful escape for anyone who picks it up, but if you are familiar with Cape Cod or the coastline of New England you'll find it even more appealing. The people and places so accurately described in Taber's work will make you a convert and read all of her books. Her prose is so superb that you forget you're reading at all and feel that you're having a conversation with Gladys herself. Gone from this world for over two decades, Gladys is still alive with such a presence in these pages that I open her books when I need comfort and I feel as if I'm speaking to my grandmother. An accomplished professor of Writing, a Wellesley grad, a naturalist, and a New Englander, Gladys Taber will remind you that all is and can be right with the world.

What a life saver! After extensive research I found Dr. Levy's book "My Tummy Hurts" the best choice. Let's face it, with four children and aging parents, inevitably one of us always has some sort of stomach issue. I felt more confused when I considered the daily news reports of tainted produce,samanella, printed warnings on meat packages, and the obvious demand for isles filled with lactose free, wheat free, soy, etc. items and I was at a loss. I found "My Tummy Hurts" easy to understand and a great guide for all ages. I strongly recommend it!

Dr. Levy has provided a wonderful service by writing this comprehensive, engaging, organized and clear book on tummy problems in infants and children. Yes, the intestinal diseases are discussed. Even more important though are the user-friendly reviews of the questions about green stools, gassiness, colic, spitty babies, and school absence. Dr. Levy's advice is a must- read on the topics of family meals, TV time and parenting. This book should be on your shelf right next to Dr. Spock.

We have been very blessed to be a patient of Dr. Levy's. He is an amazing doctor and has literally turned our lives around. My baby spent the first few months of her life in severe pain, until the day we first met Dr. Levy.
This book is an invaluable resource and provides a wealth of information about how the digestive system works, the digestive health of babies, nutrition, GI disorders and tools for diagnosing tummy troubles.
Of particular interest to us was the chapter on Reflux and GERD since this is what my daughter has. It is amazing how many parent's I have spoken to who have a pediatrician who misdiagnoses their babies reflux. This book can prevent that since it provides so much information on signs and symptoms of so many GI disorders, diseases and aliments.
The book is very easy to follow and the information is very easy to understand. This book should be given to new mother's when they leave the hospital and should be on every pediatrician's desk. It can ease the worries of parent's both new and experienced, reduce phone calls to the doctor and help guide a parent in the right direction to find the best care for their child.

Recalcitrant Indecisiveness.......2005-10-14
This book explores several themes. First, it speaks in generalities to the rise of the Profession of Arms and talks about the development of professional officers. The second major theme is that it dicusses command and control and the execution and management of violence. the thesis is that decision making, technology and professionalism are essential tools that now become part of the overall thought, deliberate strategy planning and development process of the military. Thirdly, it speaks to and explores tactical decisiveness and lastly, it speaks to international law and custom.
All in all this is a great book, but dont expect that the conclusions or answers to these themes will always jump out at you. You will need to read with intention to discern these 4 themes, and some others, and how they may or may not apply to your contemporary comparisons of Modern war, that is from roughly WW II to the Gulf War of 90-91 and Post-Modern War, that is, current warfare post 9-11.
This two hundred year work of analysis ends where it begins. With the analysis of a decisive battle. The last 8 pages sum up a few of the auhtors conclusions; one that comes to mind is the political-military-business training and role that officers must have in order to perform there military roles effectively.
The greatest benefit of this book will be derived when one compares post modern war with the tactical lessons of the battlefield.
The academic debate rages, and will continue to rage over whether or not there is such a thing as the decisive battle. You will need to discern for yourself if the principles of war have changed and if the tactical execution of the battle has a direct correlation to the operational, strategic and or political aspects of war.
ps. read this book slowly and with intention, there is much to absorb here.

This is an excellent book providing an interesting alternative viewpoint of historical events that have been reviewed extensively. The author writes with an engaging style which maintains the readers interest throughout the text. The only fault in this excellent book is the number of typographical errors in the text in one case leading to a small factual error. The Dauphine Estates General met at the town of Vizille not Virille as shown in the text.
But still a very enjoyable book!

Adsorption of anionic surfactant (sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate, SDBS) and nonionic surfactant (an alcohol ethoxylates with 12 carbons and 9 oxyethyl groups, A"1"2E"9) mixtures, widely used as the major constituents of synthetic detergents in China and become the most common pollutants in the environment, on soils was conducted to investigate the behavior of mixed surfactants in soils. The effects of addition order and mixing ratios of two surfactants, associated with pH and ion strength in solutions, on adsorptions were considered. The results show that saturated adsorption amount of SDBS and A"1"2E"9 on soils decreased respectively when A"1"2E"9 was added into soils firstly compared with that secondly, possibly resulting from the screening of A"1"2E"9 to part adsorption sites on soils and the hydrocarbon chain-chain interactions between SDBS and A"1"2E"9. The adsorption of SDBS and A"1"2E"9 on soils was enhanced each other at pre-plateau region of isotherms. At plateau region of isotherms, the adsorption of SDBS on soils decreased with the increase of molar fraction of A"1"2E"9 in mixed surfactant solutions, while that of A"1"2E"9 increased except the molar ratio of SDBS to A"1"2E"9 0.0:1.0. With the increase of pH in mixed surfactant solutions, adsorption amount of SDBS and A"1"2E"9 on soils decreased, respectively. This paper develops quantitative structure activity relationships (QSARs) for the acute aquatic toxicity of the anionic surfactants linear alkylbenzene sulphonates (LAS) and ester sulphonates (ES) to Daphnia magna, the aim being to investigate the modes of action by comparing the QSARs for the two types of surfactant. The generated data for ES have been used to develop a QSAR correlating toxicity with calculated logP values: log(1/EC50)= 0.78logP+1.37. This equation has an intercept 1.1log units lower than a QSAR for linear alkylbenzene sulphonates (LAS). The findings suggest that either ES surfactants act by a different mode of action to LAS and other anionic surfactants or the logP calculation method introduces a systematic overestimate when applied to ES.

The surfactant to dye binding degree (SDBD) method is proposed for the routine monitoring of anionic surfactants in aqueous environmental samples and their analytical features compared with those provided by the standard methylene blue (MB) method. This new analytical approach is based on the effect that anionic surfactants exert on the binding degree of the cationic surfactant didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDABr) to the anionic dye Coomassie Brilliant Blue G (CBBG). The formation of DDABr-CBBG aggregates is monitored photometrically. The analytical applicability of the proposed method was demonstrated by determining anionic surfactants in tap, river and swamp water, and raw and treated sewage. The mean recoveries obtained ranged between 99 and 101%. The SDBD method offers important advantages over the classical MB method: it is more sensitive, selective, precise, simple and rapid; the analytical response is independent of the molecular structure of the anionic surfactants, and the volume of sample required for analysis and the consumption of organic solvents are significantly reduced.
