"Anyone who can hold a pencil can learn to draw.".......2005-10-16
With these encouraging words author/artist Angela Gair begins this wonderful little gem of a book for beginning artists.
The book introduces the "elements of art" in a very simple and non-overwhelming way with plenty of illustrations. She takes you by the hand and shows you a "plan of attack" for drawing a picture -- breaking the picture down into elements and layers which you add one by one.
The book explores several art themes: Landscapes, Animals, People, Still Life & Interiors and each theme has a "project" that you can do to explore the theme.
Using her idea of "analyzing the line in human forms" I was able to start a sketch of my cat snickers -- by analyzing the lines around him and focusing on "the picture" as if I was looking through a viewfinder (another technique she shares) and began drawing a rough grid to start the drawing. I captured the curve of his spine and his rear paw before he got up -- and will return to the drawing when he returns again to this favorite sitting spot of his.
This is an excellent introduction to drawing for the beginning artist. I plan to buy more books from this author. I feel like it was a "bit of grace" that this book "crossed my path" serendipitously at a local arts and craft store i frequent. Ms. Gair is truly a gifted art teacher that makes art simple and easy to do.

Haven't read this book yet. Got a Barnes and Noble edition by Metro Books with a ISBN 0-7607-5442-X. I hate exclusive and book club editions that mess up my cataloging by ISBN. This looks like a great book and the same as other editions.

The mad, shaggy genius of the comics world dips deeply into the well of history and pulls up a cup filled with blood in From Hell. Alan Moore did a couple of Ph.D.'s worth of research into the Whitechapel murders for this copiously annotated collection of the independently published series. The web of facts, opinion, hearsay, and imaginative invention draws the reader in from the first page. Eddie Campbell's scratchy ink drawings evoke a dark and dirty Victorian London and help to humanize characters that have been caricatured into obscurity for decades. Moore, having decided that the evidence best fits the theory of a Masonic conspiracy to cover up a scandal involving Victoria's grandson, goes to work telling the story with relish from the point of view of the victims, the chief inspector, and the killer--the Queen's physician. His characterization is just as vibrant as Campbell's; even the minor characters feel fully real. Looking more deeply than most, the author finds in the "great work" of the Ripper a ritual magic working intended to give birth to the 20th century in all its horrid glory. Maps, characters, and settings are all as accurate as possible, and while the reader might not ultimately agree with Moore and Campbell's thesis, From Hell is still a great work of literature. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
Legendary comics writer Alan Moore and artist Eddie Campbell have created a gripping, hallucinatory piece of crime fiction about Jack the Ripper. Detailing the events that led up to the Whitechapel murders and the cover-up that followed, From Hell has become a modern masterpiece of crime noir and historical fiction.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Moore and Campbell have delved deeply into the story of Jack the Ripper, to present a version of what might have happened, based on what they knew and discovered in the research.
While odd looking to start with, the artwork seems to fit the squalor of the times once you start reading, and the density of the work is pretty impressive.
A masterpiece! What did you expect me to say?.......2007-08-07
Thick as a phone-book and often difficult to navigate. 'From Hell' is a comic that demands a lot from the reader and not is possible to finish over a single visit at the restroom. But it will yet be a highly rewarding experience for whoever who dares to give it a try.
In one of his most ambitious works Alan Moore gives his version of the still unsolved crimes of Jack The Ripper. Stories of the police, the prostitutes, citizens of London and the killer himself are neatly meshed together with a enthusiastic analysis and ideas that appears very realistic though most is fiction. Comics are rarely seen as intelligent or complex as this.
Eddie Campbell's drawings has this raw and unpolished look that suits the story just perfect and he makes a great deal of portraying the locations, the people and the gruesome killings in details. The killings are extreme and not for the weaker but they naturally also plays an important part and should certainly not ever be left out.
Now, just imagine the enormous research both must have done for this book!
UNBELIVABLE.......2007-06-06
i made the decision to purchase each of the 10 books individually. only needing #'s 8 and 10 i DO NOT regret my decision. the individual 10 books are WAAAAAAY cooler than the one volume with the whole story in it. it means you get 10 covers with 10 different paintings... cant get cooler than that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Best Graphic Novel written by Alan Moore.......2007-05-25
It's in black and white, a foot thick and will give you nightmares for a month.
If I could sum it up in a few sentences I'd be doing it a disservice and be a liar.
Buy it, read it and weep, for there will never be another book like it.
Watchmen for grown ups.
Superlative.......2007-03-17
'From Hell' has been in the world of literature for quite some time now. Like several other works by Alan Moore, it had also led to a paradigm shift in the world of Graphic Novels right from the beginning. But this work has a particular shade attached to it that we don't encounter elsewhere. Jack the Ripper has been the subject of so many works that sooner or later he/she may also become the butt of jokes like Knights' Templar (e.g. truest sign of one's insanity being his launching of discussions related to Knights' Templar). However, this book is no joke. It is a grim yet fictitous account of the Whitechapel murders based on Stephen Knight's now infamous "Royal Conspiracy" theory.
The story is briefly about the indiscretions of Queen Victoria's grandson Prince Albert Victor (Prince Eddy) that leads to her marriage to a shopkeeping lady and causes the birth of a girl. When the matter is attempted to be suppressed by the Queen through Sir William Withey Gull, Annie Crook (mother of Prince Eddy's child) becomes insane, but this secret is learned by Marie Kellie. She forms a loose confederacy of some of the other "Joy Maiden"-s of Whitechapel to blackmail the royalty through the painter William Sickert, which leads to their being butchered by Sir William Withey Gull, as per masonic rituals. These crimes are finally exposed, but masonic cover-ups as well as other efforts to silence Inspector Abberline succeed in suppressing the actual occurrences and distorting the entire picture.
Like all other works of Moore, it is a research paper, aimed at analysing those killings and to come up with meanings that our philosophy can not explain. This book is not for those who might wish either to read it for pleasure or to brush up their knowledge regarding "Ripperology". It is a work that might very well challenge your sanity and compell yourself to look at those faces, leering at you from the shadows, with a little more concern.

Great Study Guide.......2003-09-25
Very informative and through. Coverage of all topics is very well written and easy to understand, even without prior insurance experience or background. This is by far the best exam study guide I have come across because of the way it is layed out with each chapter including a "quick quiz" in the middle & an end of chapter "exam". Also at the end of this book is a full exam that covers all topics discussed, as well as sample applications and basic insurance forms. Very helpfull and will be a great addition to any agents reference collection. I highly recommend this book for the novice, expert, and soon to be life & health agents. A++
Good at home study guide........2002-07-06
Overall it is a good study guide (I passed using this book with 2 weeks of leisurely at home study), but the test section could be revamped - it did not include enough questions that were like the ones on the actual exam (I took an Experior Online state exam).

Passtrack Life, Accident and health insurance.......2004-08-20
This book is typical of many text books; dry and confusing. The material is presented in a dry and boring fashion. You will NOT want to read this book for any reason other than passing the insurance exam.
Good combination of Life & Health (Accident & Disability).......2002-07-06
Combines the Dearborne Pastrack Health Insurance & Life Insurance License Exam Manuals.
Overall it is a good study guide (I passed using this book with 2 weeks of leisurely at home study), but the test section could be revamped - it did not include enough questions that were like the ones on the actual exam (I took an Experior Online state exam).

Customer Reviews:
Fair to Both Sides.......2002-10-25
An excellent overview of a controversial subject. Nothing in it should seriously offend either proponents of scientific medicine or proponents of alternative medicine. It is a good quick reference to most of the herbs and therapies in use today. Its presentation is balanced; giving pros, cons, possible side effects, dosages, etc. It clearly states which claims are based on proof, and which claims are not generally accepted. Particularly valuable is its discussion of how to choose what is best for you without getting scammed.
Some good info, but scattered with medical babble.......2001-07-25
I sold this one... Had some good info, but also more info from those who have no understanding of the words "Natural Medicine."
If you want to know what the medical community is up to, and read thier propoganda about the natural health field, then it's a fair book to read, if you're loking for some really good alternative health information, you'd do much better to find an alternative source!
comprehensive overview of alternative therapies.......2000-01-11
One of the biggest problems encountered in approaching different medical strategies is sorting out the claims of the various schools. This volume presents a clear and well worded guide to a wide variety of medical issues, comparing the different available techniques. It is not perfect. In a volume of this size, judgemental claims are made, and one can disagree with the judgement made. Claims are made, without the reasoning behind them. To be honest, there is not enough space in a volume of this size for a more comprehensive evaluation, so you will have to read around the subject of interest. Having said that, despite room for disagreement, I found the information was accurate, comprehensive and understandable. If you want a handy, one-volume reference in clear format, this is the book for you. I liked the broad approach, but did not appreciate the "school medicine" assessment at the end of the reviews, although the balance was well met. I am recommending this book to my friends.
Book Description
For the first book in our new series Over The Battlefield, we have chosen Ian Daglish to describe the events of Operation GOODWOOD, July 1944, the dramatic attempted British armored breakout from the Normandy bridge-head. This was the greatest armored battle undertaken by the British during the Second World War.
What is so special about this book is the discovery and use of superb aerial photos taken during the fighting by the RAF. This amazing imagery makes it possible to trace the course of the battle and to track the movement of the armored regiments and troops of both sides. The effect is sensational and the reader is able to follow history in the making.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best GOODWOOD books available!.......2006-09-30
This is the kind of book a military history enthusiast dreams of. Mr Dalglish does a very thorough survey using the very interesting and fascinating aerial photography material which is available. There are a lot of aerial photographs depicting actual combat situations during operation GOODWOOD. Before reading this book I had no idea such an extensive material was available. This book opens up a whole new perspective on military history and I look forward to more volumes in the same context. The author builds the whole story around such aerial pictures and also complement these with a lot of deatailed maps, ground photography and informative text. This book also focuses on some of the myths around this battle. It raises appropriate questions and also answers them in a very informative and professional way. I highly recommend this book to any military history student. To WWII "buffs" and especially Normandy "fans" this book is indispensable!!!
Groundbreaking, Excellent Concept - Inadequate Research.......2006-07-07
I have often wondered why, among the untold thousands of books on 20th century warfare, almost none have provided contemporary aerial recon photos to illustrate the course of battle.
We have countless books and miles of film footage featuring every possible visual detail of weaponry, uniforms, decorations, and dramatic scenes of men in combat.
Yet very few show what is undoubtedly the most dramatic view of all: from overhead, while the fighting is actually in progress.
All combatant armies took millions of recon photos using state-of-the-art cameras during WWII. Most of them were probably taken during "quiet" periods for planning purposes, but some were taken during actual operations, especially by the Western Allies (It's entirely possible that many actual "battle" photos would've been obscured by smoke-I'm not sure). Surely many of them are still sitting in archives today, slowly disintegrating.
Surprisingly little research has been done using this incredible resource.
This is not the first book that reproduces aerial photos, But it is the first (I've seen) to use dozens of those photos continuously throughout as a research tool and as a method to describe the battle.
Pen & Sword books (UK) has apparently begun a series based on wartime aerial recon photos called "Above The Battlefield". It's an excellent concept that should've been done decades ago.
This is the first book in the series; Ian Daglish's "Goodwood". He's written a Goodwood book for Pen and Sword's "Battleground" series a couple years ago which shares a lot in common with this newer title. But this time Daglish goes into more detail, and has the wonderful aerial photos to either provide dramatic images to complement what we already know about the battle, or intoduce new information.
The photos are truly incredible. Daglish's photo research is to be applauded and has helped to clear up misconceptions about the battle.
But unfortunately, research into the archival, written record is where Daglish and his editors at Pen And Sword really dropped the ball.
This was a marvellous opportunity to dig up the July 18 1944 after-action reports of all the units participating and simultaneously compare them with the photos. Daglish could've also popped over to Freiburg, Germany to take a look at surviving German records of the battle.
Daglish instead makes the unforgivable mistake of relying almost entirely on unreliable memoir testimony of veterans and other secondary sources. Not a single record from any of the participating combat units of either side was used in the book. The Allies conducted extensive operations research after each battle, and those reports could've been used. The Germans of course produced their own reports and those records which survived are freely available to researchers. Daglish didn't use them.
For example, Daglish describes the "mystery" of the "Guns of Cagny":
A German veteran of the battle, Col. Hans von Luck of the 21 Pz Div, claims that during the British tank attack, he came across a battery of 4 Luftwaffe-controlled 88mm guns deployed in the village of Cagny. The commander of the battery had been ordered to shoot at Allied aircraft, which had recently bombed the area. But at that moment, hundreds of British tanks were approaching the village, and Col. von Luck ordered the battery commander to engage the tanks instead. The battery commander refused, claiming his orders were to shoot at aircraft, not tanks. Von Luck then drew his pistol and again ordered the battery commander to engage the enemy tanks at once. The battery commander finally complied with the order, and some dozen or so British tanks were quickly knocked out by the 4 88s, and disrupted the British attack.
Daglish thinks von Luck's story is fishy, because no other German participant in the battle has ever mentioned the incident, nor do any of the aerial photos show any sign of 88mm guns near Cagny. Daglish leaves it at that, as a "mystery" when all he had to do was go to Germany and look up the records of the 5 Panzer Army II SS Pz Korps and most importantly the Luftwaffe III Flak Korps, the German HQ which would've controlled the 88mm battery. Daglish only refers to the commander of III Flak Korps' post-war interrogation by the US Army, not the unit's war diary. In all probability, there would've been some information about the 88s deployment in those records which would've probably cleared up this particular "mystery".
But Daglish claims "no other information has yet been discovered" which would shed light on the episode, which is ridiculous.
Another appaling error was commited by not including the exact time of each and every photo taken. Without knowing this simple bit of information, the photos are almost useless for reconstructing the fighting.
I'll reluctantly give the book 5 stars and a strong recommendation based on the concept and the stunning photos, but I am disappointed in the spotty, almost amateurish research conducted for the book. It could've been far, far better.
But we should commend and support Daglish and Pen & Sword for embarking on what will hopefully be a continuing series by buying this ultimately fascinating book. Other publishers of illustrated military history (Fedorowicz, Shiffer, Osprey, Heimdal, Frontline Illustration, etc etc) should also follow the lead. (Soviet WWII recon photos? You bet! Personally, I'd love to see an 'Above the Battlefield' book on Prokhorovka; THAT would be something to see!)
