An illustrated introduction provides an overview of design principles and is followed by three sections: Furniture, Art Glass, and Decorative Objects. Elegant full-color photographs and an authoritative text profile fifty of the best-loved signature designs that the architect created to complement his famous architectural interiors. Written by a Wright specialist, this lush companion to its successful predecessor, Fifty Favorite Rooms by Frank Lloyd Wright, offers an approachable look at the architect's definitive decorative style.

Minimal Designs, Maximum Back Pain, and Great Vision!.......2001-07-19
Most of the 5,000 plus wonderful rooms designed by Frank Lloyd Wright are not open to the public. Even if you could go behind those doors, you often would find that the original furnishings have been moved, replaced, or lost. This book gives you a chance to go where you often cannot go in any other way to see the best original details of furnishings in 50 of the best. Unlike most architects, Mr. Wright designed in such a way that "the rooms inside would dictate the architecture outside." Even inside, he designed all elements of the room, including floor and wall coverings, art glass in many cases, lighting fixtures, furniture, and where everything should be located. He also specified that those who used the rooms should be limited to bringing in only certain types of objects, and for certain locations. For example, ornamental china was allowed on one ledge of the dining room in Robie House.
In working on furnishings, he had a lot of help. Marion Mahoney often finished his designs for furniture and art glass, and saw them through implementation. George Niedecken was often called upon to execute conceptual designs of furniture. Artists helped with sculptures and murals. Artisans crafted many of the items that Mr. Wright sketched.
The furnishings were never meant to be considered separately from the buildings and rooms they were to reside in. Yet this volume can help you appreciate these details that are often tiny in photographs of entire rooms.
I have had the chance to visit many Wright homes and buildings, yet this book greatly expanded my understanding of his work.
This book is primarily focused on furniture, but has a number of important art glass and decorative arts examples.
Mr. Wright designed what have to be the most elegant, minimal chairs . . . and the ones that were probably the most painful to sit in. I had a hard time appreciating the design while thinking about how impractical they are. Well, every genius has limitations . . . and chairs were that for Mr. Wright.
My favorite furniture examples in the book were the print table from the Oak Park house, Robie winged sofa, Coonley desk, and the Johnson Wax desk. Of the art glass, I liked the Roberts window, the Luxfer prism glass, Thomas vestibule, Dana windows, and the Tree of Life window. In the decorative pieces, I enjoyed the pedestal and butterfly lamps, and the glass-faced "golden" mortar.
As you will see from the examples, each one loses a lot by being seen in isolation from the rest of the room. Ms. Maddex does a nice job of describing each item or ensemble in a half-page essay covering the 50 subjects here.
The photography is superb in the 67 illustrations, including 64 full color plates. That's quite important because you will not usually be allowed to photograph these objects, even if you do have the good fortune to see them in a Wright home or public building.
After you finish examining the items you like best, I suggest that you think about what qualities furnishings must have in order to improve the quality of your life. How well does your best furnishing do so now? How can you make that furnishing ease your way into natural living even better?
Relax . . . then, see, touch, and enjoy the beauty all around you!
Frank Lloyd Wright Excelled at Designing Interior Details.......2000-06-14
Diane Maddex's 50 Favorite Furnishings by Frank Lloyd Wright is a sensual, visual experience. This book has three sections dealing with furniture, art glass and decorative arts. Frank Lloyd Wright excelled at designing the furnishings of the rooms in the famous buildings that he created. The photos show the craftsmanship and pure beauty of the each form. The author has done a admirable job of selecting a wide variety of pieces to share. I hadn't understood that every item that was inside the house was just as important as the exterior design to Frank Lloyd Wright before reading this book. With that sort of attention to details, it is easier for me to understand why Frank Lloyd Wright stands out as a creative genius. I bought this book for inspiration and ideas for decorating a new "Prairie Style" house. Thanks Diane Maddex for helping me dream.

Romantic Touch.......2002-04-26
I loved this butterfly sticker collection! I used the stickers over a period of a year or two, mostly on envelopes/correspondence and on gift packages. I'm always looking for beautifully detailed stickers suitable for adult use. I'm a mother and school teacher as well as an artist myself. I am a huge fan of letter writing (now called "snail-mail"! Sticker collections such as this one add a not often found personal touch of beauty.

Once upon a time in the United States, before the ubiquitous yellow arches of a certain hamburger chain spread like chicken pox, eating on the go was an occasion. Those long-gone days when customer service was number one--and meals were dished up by enthusiastic young women costumed to resemble drum majorettes--are captured in this compilation of vintage photographs and memorabilia, crammed to overflowing with nostalgia.

Drive Inns.......2007-01-23
Talk about filled with information-this book has all of the pictures and the details behind the car hops. I thought the uniqueness behind the Tam O Shanter was cool. Also, the celebrities that went to the drive inns and what they ordered. The book explains some of the history behind the word "car hop." Just a fun, light read!!! Highly recommended for those people who remember going to the A&W or other drive inn, especially in California.

Book Description
Explains common post-operative medical problems experienced by transplant recipients, factors to consider when prescribing medications, etc.
Customer Reviews:
Good concise overview, but needs to be updated........2007-02-18
This is a good small pocket book written by a Liver Transplant surgeon from Univ. of Minnesota. It is easy read and you can quickly go through the whole book in 2-3 days. It is good for getting a good overview of the issues surrounding liver transplantation, especially if you are doing a rotation on a transplant team. The downside, however, is that a significant amount of information is outdated and a lot of new information is not there. I therefore, recommend using this book for only an initial general outline and using other books such as Killenberg's "medical care of the liver transplant patient" for further reading. Other sources for most recent information would be Uptodate, recent journal articles as well as society guidelines.

Masterful recounting of a time and a place.......2004-11-08
True WW II buffs (NOT mediocre history students!) will welcome this masterful recounting of the war and all its implications esp. on the home front. O'Neill's vivid descriptions of everyday life during the war rival the narratives of the finest of popular historians--Bruce Catton, Frederick Lewis Allen, David McCullough.
An insightful, colorful, skillfully written book which students, if they knew anything about history or the writing of history, would appreciate more respectfully!
can you say- textbook?.......2004-07-19
After reading this book for my WW2 history class, also taught by Oneill, I am left wondering how such a brilliant lecturer can write such a bad book. The book is a poor read and reminded me of the common fact based stuff i read in high school. Information is plentiful, but to cover the entire war in such a disorganized way doesn't do it justice. In his class we also read "Touched with Fire" and "Nazi Germany and World War 2", which covered the Pacific war and Germany. Time better spent would be reading these two. They are both chronological and much better books in general.
Dont waste your time reading there are better books.......2004-02-27
This book A Democracy at War is a very uninteresting book facing WWII. The author is very disorganized in the way he presents his material. It is very unpleasing the way he starts to make a point then lingers off on something very unimportant. Though it does contain historical facts about the war, you are just better off reading a thesaurus because it has the same facts without dealing with the war but without the pointless dribble and is more historically relevant to the war. Not unless you are forced to read this book, I recommand anything else!
A democracy at war.......2001-05-25
I have to read this book for my World War II history class thats taught by the author himself. By all accounts, the author - Professor O'Neill is a splendid lecturer whose emotionative, compelling narratives can often leave the listener wanting for more once the class had ended. A master story teller who can weave together the boring, mundane historical facts associated with every history class to bring to the audience a sense of the nature of the times being studied, of the people involved, and most importantly of its consequences and significance that shaped how our present society evolved from the past. It is with these high expectations that I began reading "A democracy at War" a week before my midterm. To my dissappointment the book was littered with facts, dates, and confusing battle descriptions. The book was well written overall. Had I not been one of lucky ones to listen to one of Professor O'Neill's lectures, I would've given this book a five star rating.
An Insightful Book by an Insightful Man.......2000-12-26
I had to read this book for my course on twentieth-century American history (which was taught by the author). I will admit that the book reads like one of his lectures, where it is up to the reader to discern his main points. However, O'Neill does try to touch base with the various aspects of the war effort, from the men in the trenches to the millions at home who took up factory jobs to keep America moving. That in itself is a daunting task, and O'Neill does it quite well. This book is a must for anyone who is interested in World War II!

Nature boy, this book's for you.......2007-07-19
Naturalist's Big Bend is a comprehensive overview of the flora and fauna of the Big Bend National Park region in Texas. Big Bend is unique for a couple of reasons. First, because the US/Mexico border dips south there, many species are found in the US only in this region. Secondly, as the climate changed following the last ice age, other species found themselves islanded in the cooler mountain ecosystems as the plains around them became deserts. These "sky islands" hold unique flora and fauna that has remained isolated for thousands of years.
Authors Wauer and Fleming have comprehensive first-hand knowledge of the park that comes through in every chapter. The book provides the advantage not only of their expertise but of their access to many unpublished Park Service and other reports and surveys of the park. The bibliography is the definitive go-to guide for anyone wishing to research any aspect of Big Bend's ecosystem. However, for a more personal tour of the park, you might prefer For All Seasons: A Big Bend Journal by author Wauer.
The book makes an excellent reference for the knowledgeable biologist or biology buff planning, enjoying, or remembering a visit to Big Bend National Park. Casual tourists will find the detail overwhelming and the illustrations miserly. With a bigger budget, this could have been a stunning illustrated field guide. As it is, most species rely on description alone for identification. There are a few black-and-white plates of plants, a limited number of fascinating black-and-white photos of animals, and a select group of stunning color photos that illustrate the diverse habitats found within the park.
Good general naturalist's info.......2006-03-07
My husband and I both found this useful and interesting for our recent weeklong trip to Big Bend. I would recommend it more as preparatory reading before the trip, or evening reading at your room or campsite while in the park, than as a guide to specific areas or species. Also it is best used with oher books accompanying it rather than relying on it alone, such as hiking, lizard, flower, or birding book too, depending on your interests. The bibiography uses up about the last quarter of this rather slim book. So you may want to get it way ahead of your trip then order more books from the bibliography or elsewhere.
Great book, bad citations........2005-12-14
This is a neat little book summarizing the flora and fauna of Big Bend National Park. It covers plants, birds, mammals, invertebrates, fish, and reptiles and amphibians, and provides a brief history. It is not an identification guide, but a listing of species of interest with some facts about them. There are better resources of information about birds and plants, but the other topics are rarely covered elsewhere aside from checklists available at the park.
My only problem with this guide is that they have provided in-text citations that are not in the bibliography! If you are going to cite sources in the text, please provide complete information *somewhere*. The bibliography lists lots of great sources, just not ALL of the sources used in the book. This lack of attention to detail is the reason I gave this book anything less than 5 stars.
Plants and Animals at Big Bend .......2004-12-27
Big Bend National Park has a variety of habitats for plants and animals. I was surprised to read that Big Bend counts more bird species than any other National Park in the US. Most of the park is desert, but the Rio Grande attracts water-loving species and the higher elevations of the Chisos mountains support trees normally associated with the Rocky Mountains hundreds of miles further north.
This is a fine little book. It has many color illustrations of the rugged terrain of the Big Bend, historical photos, black and white photos of animals and plants, and line drawings of wildflowers for identification purposes.
The book offers a capsule history of the Big Bend and a description of the five ecological zones in the park: floodplain, desert shrub, desert grassland, woodland formation and woodland. A chapter each is devoted to describing trees and shrubs, wildflowers, cacti, mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, fish, and insects and other invertebrates. An extensive bibliography will guide a reader who wants more information. The text is competently and clearly written with brief descriptions of each species and comments on its importance, uses, range, and habitat.
