          Product Description

Shoji Hamada, along with Bernard Leach, was one of the key figures in the development of studio pottery in the 20th century, resurrecting the craft after its near demise during the Industrial Revolution. His influence both in England and the U.S. as well as in his native Japan cannot be underestimated. The Japanese government designated him a 'Living National Treasure' in 1955 and awarded him the Order of Culture in 1968. The book is inspirational to any person seeking to set off on a career as a studio potter

                  Book Description

Framing the West argues that photography was intrinsic to British territorial expansion and settlement on the northwest coast. Williams shows how male and female settlers used photography to establish control over the territory and its indigenous inhabitants, as well as how native peoples eventually turned the technology to their own purposes. Photographs of the region were used to stimulate British immigration and entrepreneuralism, and imagies of babies and children were designed to advertise the population growth of the settlers. Although Indians were taken by Anglos to document their "disappearing" traditions and to show the success of missionary activities, many Indians proved receptive to photography and turned posing for the white man's camera to their own advantage. This book will appeal to those interested in the history of the West, imperialism, gender, photography, and First Nations/Native America.

All ages. The 1991 national winner of the Kids Are Authors contest, sponsored by PAGES Book Fairs, Inc. This fanciful, fun story is a great example of the best kind of picture book: one written and illustrated by children. The bright mixed-media illustrations are beautiful and the story is delightful.

                    5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!.......2005-01-09

I just recently obtained a copy. My name is Paul Andrews and I was one of the students that wrote that book back in First Grade! I had so many great memories creating it with sponge paint. We all as a class participated in the event, then walked to the local Postal service and mailed it in! I am honored to know that something that I have helped create has made into the hearts of so many!

5 out of 5 stars Teaches children to respect the feelings and needs of others.......1999-10-08

I really enjoyed this book and all of the morals that it taught children. In my opinion this book teaches children to respect the feelings and needs of others. It also reflects the importance of giving hugs. While volunteering at an elementary school, a kindergarten teacher asked me to read this book to her class. I have never been so touched by a children's book, as I was with this one. If you have not had the opportunity to read this book, then you need to take the time. I recommend that every elementary teacher and every parent of young children needs to have access to this book. Read it and enjoy!!!

                                          Book Description

Corporate property is routinely identified as the second biggest cost within a business organization after staff. Effective management of such a major asset requires a fundamental understanding of both the operation of the property markets and the operational requirements of the business occupier. This primer on strategic property management focuses on how property held as a corporate asset can be used to add value to the primary business activity of an organization. Rather than separate the needs of the business form the management of the business estate, the aim of Corporate Property Management is to enable the reader to directly support the primary business function through strategic management of corporate property, thereby adding value to the business as a whole. The book introduces a generic framework designed to assist in the analysis of any corporate property portfolio, working as a practical aid to decision making. The book is structured around this framework, providing a detailed review of its application and uses. This is then developed further through extensive use of five in-depth case studies that covers a wide variety of property types and property users - Borders bookshops; Cancer Research high street shops; The Youth Hostel Association; Clifford Chance 's move to Canary Wharf and the Ardtornish Rural Estate in Scotland.

                                            Book Description

"This is a truly exceptional collection of contributions on the dynamics of family relationships. The authors not only provide thoughtful state-of-the-art reviews of relevant bodies of literature and methods, but also grapple with thorny conceptual issues and present novel theoretical insights. In doing so, they demonstrate the tremendous progress in thinking about families in the past decade or two and provide guideposts for future theory and research on parent-child relationships."

                                            - Nancy Eisenberg, Regents’ Professor of Psychology, Arizona State University

"This forward looking volume will be invaluable to all concerned with parent-child relationships. With chapters written by leading researchers in the field, it focuses on process, and on the agency of both parent and child. The approach is therefore dialectical, changes in either partner continuously leading to change in the other. A must for teachers, researchers and graduate students."

                                            - Robert A. Hinde, St. John’s College, Cambridge, United Kingdom

Handbook of Dynamics in Parent-Child Relations provides an innovative, interdisciplinary perspective on theory, research, and methodology of dynamic processes in parent-child relations. Edited by distinguished scholar Leon Kuczynski, this accessible volume is divided into six parts. Part I concerns dyadic processes in parent-child relationships and provides the conceptual grounding for the volume as a whole. Parts II and III examine the agency of the child and the agency of the parent, respectively. Part IV considers dynamics in the parent-child dyad as they are mediated by or impact on various lifespan, cultural, and ecological contexts. Part V addresses the methodological implications of adopting a dynamic process view of parent-child relations. Part VI weighs future directions for theory, research, and practice.

An eminent group of scholars and researchers present a comprehensive exploration of parent-child relationships that includes

Handbook of Dynamics in Parent-Child Relations focuses on process rather than outcomes, bi-directional influence rather than parent effects or child effects, and parents and children as agents and actors rather than as static traits or variables. This concern with dynamics represents an emerging research perspective that complements a long-standing alternative tradition primarily concerned with the products of parenting.

Interdisciplinary in scope, Handbook of Dynamics in Parent-Child Relations will appeal to academics, professionals, graduate students, and senior-level undergraduates involved with Developmental Psychology, Family Science, Human Ecology, and Family Sociology.

This book needed a good editor. Jones' preface promised "... far less attempt to record deeds of heroism than ... the origins of the compulsions which prompted such deeds." He failed, and in the process muddles the descriptions of the action. In fairness, the topic was not much examined at this level of detail, the book DOES convey the hardships of World War 2 in the Pacific theater and one learns a fair bit about the tin can navy's operations.
Jones finds some strange ways of using words, often making them clank and sometimes reaching for incomprehensibility. He never misses an opportunity to use six unusual words when one would suffice. The development of the American captains' characters is shallow, and then doesn't really lead anywhere. The dialog and motivation attributed to Japanese characters is laughable -- just imagine Rear Admiral Sentaro Omori reflecting (pg. 218) "as he drummed happily on the edge of the chart table with his pudgy fingers," ... "This /was/ a golden opportunity to teach the white [...] a lesson, and he was just the little boy who could do it, too!"
Here's an example of florid description, re the sinking of the cruiser USS Quincy (pg. 73): "... Burning flag bags filled the [bridge] area with heavy acrid smoke laced with the searing rasp of cordite fumes, and steering control was lost. A freak hit on the port 5-inch antiaircraft battery inflicted agony on the gunners and exacted all of their lives. Conforming to the immutable laws of physics a Japanese shell neatly cut away the cartridge case bases of the 5-inch ammunition in the fuse pots, and the propellant powder in the 5-inch shell transformed them instantly into Roman candles which first seared and then roasted alive the gunners of the battery. ..."
Jones occasionally gets sloppy with essential technical details. He misspells a ship's name, the Reina Mercedes, where Naval Academy midshipmen were once brigged. USN DD destroyers' main guns had a 5-inch bore, and their anti-aircraft guns were 40- and 20-millimeter.

1 out of 5 stars I am disappointed that the book turned out to be fiction........1999-10-30

The Author does comment in the his preface what Bull Halsey does not note his forward that the book is fictionalized non-fiction. I am probably not being fair to the author but I just don't enjoy reading accounts where you continuosly wonder whether or not the events are real. I did not finish the first chapter.

                                              3 out of 5 stars Good Book!.......1998-06-27

This book covers that part of admiral Burke's carreer when he served in destroyers in a fairly interesting fashion. The author spends a lot of time developing the characters of Burke's destroyer captains, and the descriptions of the actions are somewhat overblown. Otherwise, an ok read.

This volume contains the histories of eleven north Oxfordshire parishes and of Bloxham hundred, to which those parishes belonged. The hundred lies intermingled with Ban-bury hundred in the valleys between the Cherwell and the Cotswold crest along the modern Warwickshire border, and ex-hibits the chief characteristics of a wider region centred on the important market-town of Banbury. The area covered con-tained nineteen nucleated settlements, supported almost exclusively by mixed farm-ing, to which the soil was particularly well suited. The prosperity that derived from agriculture is reflected in the fine parish churches, like those of Bloxham and Adderbury, in the quality of the surviving peasant building, and in the large country houses, Wroxton Abbey, Broughton Castle, and Hanwell Castle. The area was notable also for its Puritanism, and later for Quakerism, both of which gained their strength not only from the prosperous independent farmers of the area but also from the leadership of the larger land- owners, the Fienneses of Broughton, the Copes of Hanwell, and Bray Doyley of Adderbury.

                                                        Book Description

From the snowcapped Himalayas and the Indus valley, to the Ganges delta and the Sri Lankan forests, the Indian subcontinent is home to 13% of the world's species of birds and thousands of birders and ecotourists flock to the area every year. This field guide will be indispensable to those who wish to find and identify the many species of avifauna of the Indian subcontinent and environs.

Featuring more than 150 color plates by eminent bird illustrators from Europe and India, it depicts all the known species in the region, ranging from the Himalayan Snowcock in the north to the Sri Lanka Spurfowl in the south. The plates include all relevant identifiable subspecies, as well as ages and sexes. It contains hundreds of range maps and the succinct text on the facing pages covers identification, voice, and distribution. Specially designed for use in the field, it is a compact version of the landmark A Guide to the Birds of India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives, hailed on its publication as a "stunning book" that "advanced the cause of Indian birding by 20-30 years." With its modest price, small trim size, and sturdy, weather-resistant binding, this field guide is the one volume that every adventurous traveler to the Indian subcontinent must have.

We bought a second reference because it's hard to know which plates will help amateurs like us identify the species in a place we've not previously visited. However, with the plates, the maps, and the generally brief, but accurate descriptions, this was the only book we needed to quickly identify the over 100 species we spotted on our trip. The soft cover made it easier to stuff into one of our binocular bags.

Going to India? BUY THIS BOOK. Truly a definitive guide to the birds of India, absolutely user-friendly in the field. Accurate slates and distribution diagrams will help you determine, very briskly, the bird you are looking at. This is important in India because there are tons of birds. Morphological and behavioural characteristics are also defined in this intense field guide. Importantly, this is easy to access, it doesn't make you bounce back and forth 3 times from the slate. Pointers on the slate also help you to quickly make distinctions between similar birds. This field guide makes birding fun and an ease. Colourful slates, smart layout, if only all field guides could be this good.

Finally, a complete, comphrensive FIELD guide to the birds of India! Gone are the days of hauling 2 or 3 hardcover bird books to the subcontinent just to be able to identify relatively common species. The drawings in this book are excellent, the descriptions very detailed, and the range maps very helpful. My two criticisms are that birders familiar with the common names in Salim Ali's "The Book of Indian Birds" will be confused with the revised nomenclature in this guide (based on the Inskipp's Indian Checklist); some changes are relatively minor, while others are so dramatically different (and frankly puzzling) that cross-referencing is a chore. The second involves the seperation of many of the range maps from the plates and descriptions, sometimes by many pages. This was due to the large number of species featured on some plates- there just wasn't enough room for the maps also. A better strategy might have been to put them all in the back of the book. But the benefits of this book far outweigh the shortcomings- my next trip to India promises to be more rewarding and productive bird-wise (as well as easier on my back)due to this excellent and overdue field guide.

                                                        Book Description

This is the most comprehensive photographic guide to the birds of India and the Indian subcontinent. Never before have so many of the region's species been illustrated in one book.

The brilliant photographs--most of which appear here for the first time--have been carefully selected to show not only the most common Passerine and non-Passerine species, but also more elusive species and distinctive subspecies. An up-to-date distribution map and a unique code indicating frequency and global status are provided for each of the 668 species covered. The concise text provides vital information on habitats, habits, and voice to ensure accurate identification.

Designed for easy use, the book places photos and maps in close proximity to provide an at-a-glance overview for each species. Birds are indexed by both their common and scientific names.

This is an essential volume for all birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts as well as for anyone traveling to India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Pakistan, Bangladesh, or Bhutan.

Bikram Grewal has written more than twenty books on India, including three guides to its birds. He is a biodiversity expert for the Indian government. Bill Harvey is a lifelong birdwatcher who has lived throughout the Indian subcontinent. He published the first authoritative checklist on the birds of Bangladesh as well as numerous articles and is a cofounder of the Northern Indian Bird Network. Otto Pfister is a wildlife photographer whose work has appeared in numerous publications. He has also published several illustrated articles on birds.

This book is a very noble effort at a photographic field guide to Indian birds. Not surprisingly, the quality of the photos varies from excellent to marginal-at-best; a few species could not possibly be intentified from the photos provided. Having said that, this book does contain several valuable features lacking from the other Indian bird guides. The range maps are displayed along with each species, with symbols and notes on the relative rarity of each species. Another very nice feature is the inclusion of the older, common (English) names which is great for those who have birded in India for awhile. I also like the smaller size and portablility of this book. The bottom line: if you are going to take one bird field guide to India, I wouldn't take this one- the Grimmett/Inskipps or Kazmeirczak "non-photo" guides are better bets. However, if you are a serious birder and don't mind packing two bird books, I'd highly recommned taking this one along to supplement the information in the other field guides.

                                                            Book Description

Birdwatchers have long waited for a comprehensive and up-to-date identification guide for the Indian subcontinent. This exhaustively researched and beautifully produced book will finally meet that need. Written by three leading experts on the region--Richard Grimmett, Carol Inskipp, and Tim Inskipp--the book provides complete information about the 1,300 species of birds found in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives. The guide is firmly rooted in the authors' extensive field experience, reflected in the accuracy and fullness of their bird descriptions.

The guide features more than 150 color plates by eminent bird illustrators from Europe and India that depict all the species in the region, ranging from the Himalayan Snowcock in the north to the Sri Lanka Spurfowl in the south. The plates include all relevant identifiable subspecies, as well as ages and sexes. The text consists of a detailed identification section, discussing the differences between similar species and containing descriptions of vocalizations, habits, habitat, breeding, distribution, and status. There are distributional maps for nearly all species. And the authors' introduction provides useful background information about such subjects as conservation, the history of ornithology on the subcontinent, and the climate. A detailed bibliography provides an introduction to the prolific literature on the subcontinent.

This is a landmark publication that will be enthusiastically welcomed by all birdwatchers with an interest in the extraordinary variety of birds in this vast and diverse region.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and excellent, but not a field guide.......1999-11-06

Ali and Ripley's masterwork cannot be touched in terms of the completeness of individual descriptions, but this volume is amazing in that it draws together all the subcontinent's spp. into one book. Even so, the tome is too heavy to carry to the field. The taxonomy is updated, as is the species list. The colour illustrations are of a very high quality; my quibble is that the individual species are too small to be very useful. The maps are miniscule and that limits their utility; the use of two colours would have helped under the circumstances. Otherwise, this book is a long-awaited treasure.

5 out of 5 stars The best guide for the birds of the Indian Subcontinent........1999-06-13

Simply the best available guide to the birds of the Indian Subcontinent. Subcontinental birders have long awaited a comphrehensive guide to the birds of this region.

No other guide comes close in quality of drawings, text and range maps. Though too large and heavy to be called a field guide. It is still brought on trips to be reviewed after a day in the field.

We eagerly await the publication of this book as a true 'field guide'- that will be useable in the field.

This is the best one-volume book on the market at this time. It has very good illustrations and good species accounts that include excellent range maps. It is the only book of one volume that covers all the birds of the Indian subcontinent with this quality of illustration. The range maps are very good and there is an adequate amount of information about each bird. It's too heavy to take into the field on your trip to India, but it is an excellent reference.
