Framing the West: Race, Gender, and the Photographic Frontier in the Pacific Northwest
Carol J. Williams Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0195146522 |
Book Description
Framing the West argues that photography was intrinsic to British territorial expansion and settlement on the northwest coast. Williams shows how male and female settlers used photography to establish control over the territory and its indigenous inhabitants, as well as how native peoples eventually turned the technology to their own purposes. Photographs of the region were used to stimulate British immigration and entrepreneuralism, and imagies of babies and children were designed to advertise the population growth of the settlers. Although Indians were taken by Anglos to document their "disappearing" traditions and to show the success of missionary activities, many Indians proved receptive to photography and turned posing for the white man's camera to their own advantage. This book will appeal to those interested in the history of the West, imperialism, gender, photography, and First Nations/Native America.

Corporate Property Management: Aligning Real Estate with Business Strategy
Victoria Edwards , and Louise Ellison Manufacturer: Blackwell Publishing Limited ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0632060514 |
Book Description
Corporate property is routinely identified as the second biggest cost within a business organization after staff. Effective management of such a major asset requires a fundamental understanding of both the operation of the property markets and the operational requirements of the business occupier. This primer on strategic property management focuses on how property held as a corporate asset can be used to add value to the primary business activity of an organization. Rather than separate the needs of the business form the management of the business estate, the aim of Corporate Property Management is to enable the reader to directly support the primary business function through strategic management of corporate property, thereby adding value to the business as a whole. The book introduces a generic framework designed to assist in the analysis of any corporate property portfolio, working as a practical aid to decision making. The book is structured around this framework, providing a detailed review of its application and uses. This is then developed further through extensive use of five in-depth case studies that covers a wide variety of property types and property users - Borders bookshops; Cancer Research high street shops; The Youth Hostel Association; Clifford Chance 's move to Canary Wharf and the Ardtornish Rural Estate in Scotland.

Handbook of Dynamics in Parent-Child Relations
Manufacturer: Sage Publications, Inc ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Accessories: ASIN: 0761923640 |
Book Description
"This is a truly exceptional collection of contributions on the dynamics of family relationships. The authors not only provide thoughtful state-of-the-art reviews of relevant bodies of literature and methods, but also grapple with thorny conceptual issues and present novel theoretical insights. In doing so, they demonstrate the tremendous progress in thinking about families in the past decade or two and provide guideposts for future theory and research on parent-child relationships."
- Nancy Eisenberg, Regentsâ Professor of Psychology, Arizona State University
"This forward looking volume will be invaluable to all concerned with parent-child relationships. With chapters written by leading researchers in the field, it focuses on process, and on the agency of both parent and child. The approach is therefore dialectical, changes in either partner continuously leading to change in the other. A must for teachers, researchers and graduate students."
- Robert A. Hinde, St. Johnâs College, Cambridge, United Kingdom
Handbook of Dynamics in Parent-Child Relations provides an innovative, interdisciplinary perspective on theory, research, and methodology of dynamic processes in parent-child relations. Edited by distinguished scholar Leon Kuczynski, this accessible volume is divided into six parts. Part I concerns dyadic processes in parent-child relationships and provides the conceptual grounding for the volume as a whole. Parts II and III examine the agency of the child and the agency of the parent, respectively. Part IV considers dynamics in the parent-child dyad as they are mediated by or impact on various lifespan, cultural, and ecological contexts. Part V addresses the methodological implications of adopting a dynamic process view of parent-child relations. Part VI weighs future directions for theory, research, and practice.
An eminent group of scholars and researchers present a comprehensive exploration of parent-child relationships that includes
Handbook of Dynamics in Parent-Child Relations focuses on process rather than outcomes, bi-directional influence rather than parent effects or child effects, and parents and children as agents and actors rather than as static traits or variables. This concern with dynamics represents an emerging research perspective that complements a long-standing alternative tradition primarily concerned with the products of parenting.
Interdisciplinary in scope, Handbook of Dynamics in Parent-Child Relations will appeal to academics, professionals, graduate students, and senior-level undergraduates involved with Developmental Psychology, Family Science, Human Ecology, and Family Sociology.

A History of the County of Oxford: Volume IX: Bloxham Hundred (Victoria County History)
Manufacturer: Victoria County History ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0197227260 |
Book Description
This volume contains the histories of eleven north Oxfordshire parishes and of Bloxham hundred, to which those parishes belonged. The hundred lies intermingled with Ban-bury hundred in the valleys between the Cherwell and the Cotswold crest along the modern Warwickshire border, and ex-hibits the chief characteristics of a wider region centred on the important market-town of Banbury. The area covered con-tained nineteen nucleated settlements, supported almost exclusively by mixed farm-ing, to which the soil was particularly well suited. The prosperity that derived from agriculture is reflected in the fine parish churches, like those of Bloxham and Adderbury, in the quality of the surviving peasant building, and in the large country houses, Wroxton Abbey, Broughton Castle, and Hanwell Castle. The area was notable also for its Puritanism, and later for Quakerism, both of which gained their strength not only from the prosperous independent farmers of the area but also from the leadership of the larger land- owners, the Fienneses of Broughton, the Copes of Hanwell, and Bray Doyley of Adderbury.

Comprehensive and excellent, but not a field guide.......1999-11-06
The best guide for the birds of the Indian Subcontinent........1999-06-13
No other guide comes close in quality of drawings, text and range maps. Though too large and heavy to be called a field guide. It is still brought on trips to be reviewed after a day in the field.
We eagerly await the publication of this book as a true 'field guide'- that will be useable in the field.
