When Marcus Whiffen's classic introduction to American architectural styles was published in 1969, Reyner Banham called it "one of the most enjoyable general works on American architecture that has ever appeared."

This new edition, containing descriptions, histories, and illustrations of more than forty architectural styles, has been revised and updated to include two new entries on late modernism and on post-modernism and a description of "streamline moderne," now recognized as an independent style. The number of illustrations has been increased to 200.

Marcus Whiffen is Professor Emeritus in the School of Architecture at Arizona State University.

Delightful Historical Perspective Of Santa Claus.......2002-02-16

The author has put together a wonderful book that gives the reader a Santa Claus history & how events of the times were seen in Santa postcards through the years. Santa trade cards, Santa holiday cards, even Santa cards from Elvis, it covers the periods from the late 1800s to the present. Descriptions accompanying all the beautiful illustrations are really interesting, very informative. I really loved this book. Makes a great gift too.

Perfect Christmas Addition.......2001-12-18

This is a great Christmas edition and stocking stuffer. The selection of postcards is superb and the photography captures the range of holiday examples excellently. The written narrative is a perfect accompaniment to the delightful collection.

out of print? Is the theater really dead?.......1999-07-31

This book is nothing but the "Bible". Parker Smith (Wolf?) and Burris-Meyer & Cole is the staff of the scenery education. Packed full of pertinent and necessary information. After 25 years of building scenery this is still one of my foremost resources. Unlike Parker Smith which also covers lighting design and as such, older editions can be outdated due to changes in basic technology, Burris-Meyer & Cole is a timeless reference book dealing hands on with techniques that have been and will be around for a long time. If you haven't a copy of this and intend to be a serious scenery professional find a copy.

Good for the late 80's -- maybe.......2002-01-31

Good insight into the relationship between the internet and how it might affect real estate. However, the info is very basic and maybe relevant for the early 90's. I thought since this book was published in 2000 that it might be more up to date. By now, everyone knows what a web site is and what e-mail is. This book gave no relevant insight into how to make technology tools work for you. I was highly disappointed. If you are clueless about the internet and in your later years, you may benefit --- but if you are there are much greater books out there about the internet. You would not have a computer geek try to tell you about real estate, why have a realtor TRY and teach you about the internet!!!

When I started this book, I figured I'd hihglight Ms.Murphy's best pointers for taking real estate business from traditional marketing forms to easy e-listing and website applications. Turns out, I practically highlighted the entire book! Great! Even if you HAVE a clue!.......2000-11-18

I had the chance to pick up this book in San Francisco at the NAR convention. Boy was I surprised! I've built a couple of websites, and own more domain names than I care to admit...so, I'm pretty technologically adept. Ms. Murphy still answered a lot of questions about real estate and technology. In other words, you don't have to be clueless to get a TON out of this book. There is so much out there for agents. I personally find it hard to wade through all the technology offers that come into my e-mail everyday. It's tough to know what's good, what's not, what works, and what is a waste of time and money. She gives great tips about all areas of real estate and the Internet. Now if she just had the magic answer to avoiding cold calling and door knocking!!

Used by the armies of the former Warsaw pact and Soviet Union, it has also been exported in large numbers to many of the states in the Middle East. This book reveals the previously secret history behind the tank. Steven J Zaloga examines the conditions under which the T-72 was designed and produced. Technical aspects of the weapon are also discussed, including its EDZ reactive armour which, when it first appeared in December 1984, gave NATO a nasty shock.

First Uncensored View of the T-72.......2002-04-24

Steve Zaloga is one of the leading scholars on Russian and Warsaw Pact armor, and this book was one of the first to take advantage of the new information that became available after the fall of the Soviet Union. It traces the development of the weapon and its deployment by Russia, its allies, and the third world customers who bought the export versions. Zaloga also reveals the Soviet designations for the various subtypes. The Russian obsession with secrecy meant that many spurious designations appeared in NATO manuals on the subject, and the author finally clears up the actual designations of the variant models. The T-72's poor performance in combat is examined and the reasons are discussed, and it is compared to its design rivals, the T-64 and the T-80. There is a nice selection of pictures of all subtypes, and a color center section by artist Peter Sarson shows the markings and camouflage of the vehicle. This title is aimed at model builders, wargamers and those with a casual interest in military technology, but the format is too limited for the dedicated historian or defense analyst.

I really got excited when I saw this reviewed in National Wildlife magazine. I often see bird tracks or even a nest when out walking but didn't know how to translate that into useful information. This book clues me in on the bird that matches those signs.
The author, a renowned tracker, spent 14 months, 12 hours a day studying bird tracks, scats, nests, feeding signs and roosts plus collected information from museums for this book.

Great gift for that serious birder.......2003-11-07

This is a guide to identifying bird families or individual species by clues they leave behind of their presence. The title may appear, at first glance, to be a typo. It is not. As the authors explain on the first page: "Sign refers to all the possible signs of their passing: sign of feeding, gathering material for nesting, the nests or cavity holes themselves, pellets, droppings, feathers lost during molt, or kill sites."

This book appears to be packed with too much information for a beginner to digest. But its actually quite good for anyone who is interested in birds and would use such a book more than once or twice. The information is organized by types of sign - tracks, feathers, feeding signs, droppings, nests and roosts, etc., rather than by species. This allows you to read about whichever subject you're interested in and to take in the basics behind, say, interpreting signs of feeding, rather than getting bogged down by details specific to a certain species.

Due to the nature of the topic, the squeamish may not enjoy all the pictures. However, the pictures are certainly not as gruesome as they could have been.

In the introduction, one of the authors writes: "real tracking is bigger than one lifetime. Tracking, as our ancestors knew it, was a body of knowledge handed down from generation to generation. Each person added to this knowledge..." The authors clearly see themselves as a continuation if this process, referring to and giving credit to other excellent books, such a Rezendes' "Tracking and the Art of Seeing".

To my knowledge, this is the only book like this specific to birds. I feel this would be an excellent gift idea for that hard-to-buy-for bird watcher.

At Last! Something that actually contributes to the Field!.......2003-10-09

Call me cynical but in the last twenty years I have seen field guide publishers recylce the same old info over and over again, just adding a new tabulature or color photos. The text is minimal and always leaves me wanting more.

Not so with this book! Mark and Eleanor have created something that goes well beyond any field guide currently on the market concerning birds! This stuff is new and never before seen except for experienced birders in the field. It is easy to use, fun to use and it will help anyone learn more about birds, their habits and sign. The photography is stunning as well.

I cannot over-recommend this book. Go get it, now!
