Book Description
To be outside allows one a fresh perspective on the inside. In these essays, philosopher Elizabeth Grosz explores the ways in which two disciplines that are fundamentally outside each another--architecture and philosophy--can meet in a third space to interact free of their internal constraints. "Outside" also refers to those whose voices are not usually heard in architectural discourse but who inhabit its space--the destitute, the homeless, the sick, and the dying, as well as women and minorities.
Grosz asks how we can understand space differently in order to structure and inhabit our living arrangements accordingly. Two themes run throughout the book: temporal flow and sexual specificity. Grosz argues that time, change, and emergence, traditionally viewed as outside the concerns of space, must become more integral to the processes of design and construction. She also argues against architecture’s historical indifference to sexual specificity, asking what the existence of (at least) two sexes has to do with how we understand and experience space. Drawing on the work of such philosophers as Henri Bergson, Roger Caillois, Gilles Deleuze, Jacques Derrida, Luce Irigaray, and Jacques Lacan, Grosz raises abstract but nonformalistic questions about space, inhabitation, and building. All of the essays propose philosophical experiments to render space and building more mobile and dynamic.

To Be Read Time Before Time.......2006-05-02
The most enlightening chapter is "The Future of Space: Toward an Architecture of Invention". For that essay alone, buy or read this book. Ms Grosz problematizes philosophies with virtualities, logics, or spaces they have long overlooked. Moving away from a tired tradition of coherentism and rigor (phallocentric logocentrism), Aristotelian logic and argumentation, Ms. Grosz takes us on a journey through space and time, before or after space and time, and in between time and space or space and time (the interval). It constitutes a journey, as such, that won't soon be forgotten. Ms. Grosz offers insights such as the following:
"Space itself, the very stuff of architectural reflection and production, requires and entails a mode of time, timeliness, or duration. Indeed, space must always involve at least two times, or perhaps two kinds of time. The first is the time of the emergence of space as such, a time before time and space, a temporalization/spatialization that precedes and renders the organization or emergence of space as such and time as such and thus emerges before a scientific understanding of a space-time continuum." (p. 110)
Time, as such, is represented by the virtual (virtuality), "a concept that requires not only a time before time but also a time after time" (p. 111).
Ms. Grosz's essays are informed by her expansive and extensive knowledge and erudition of Aristotelian logic, contact physics, maths, and postmodern philosophy.
Her insights into the mysteries of space and time, the suchness of the now, the virtuality of the actuality or the potentiality, and the "hesitation" of durationality will have your head spinning as it's nodding in agreement.
Amazing and Cutting Edge .......2005-01-14
Professor Grosz as done it again. In her latest work she as out done herself. Enjoy the read
Let Down.......2003-04-16
Initially I was impressed with this book, it seemed to be well written and to raise some interesting questions concerning architectural ideas of the present and future. As the book progresses the author's rhetoric gets a bit thin, causually citing references that are never elaborated upon leaving many of her arguements baseless. If you suffer from the ability to develop your own questions concerning the future of architectural thought/theory, whether you are an architect or from the 'outside', buy this book. Otherwise find an author that can actual communicate an idea beyond an initial thought.

Great all-around ceramics text.......2005-10-07
Comprehensive in scope, this book takes the reader through a complete ceramics course. Very well written, it includes concise but thorough background info, plus clear step-by-step instructions on specific techniques. It lacks some of the detail of specialty books, but if you need to start with one overall book, or if you want to make sure there are no huge gaps in your understanding, this book is a good choice.
Pottery Making.......2000-07-26
I reccomend this book to both begginers and experienced potters. It has many step-by-step black and white photos with great instructions. The photos have helped me perform techniques better and properly. There is a section on every method of working with clay and gives you solutions to problems. This book also gives great guides on buying clay, making a work space and many other opinions on how to become a professional potter. I don't have a question about pottery that can't be answered in this book.

Seasons of Mackinac.......2007-08-09
This book is an awesome photographic chronicle through all four seasons on Mackinac Island. The island is a trip back in time to a quieter, more peaceful existence that few of us know anything about in today's hustle and bustle world. Having spent 8 summers vacationing on the island, this book gives me a vivid glimpse into the other seasons. My daughter-in-law bought this book on the island this summer, and I loved it so much I bought another copy as a gift for a friend who had never visited the island. I would recommend this book highly.

Book Description
During the last two decades, there have been many reports about the success and failure of investments in ICT and information systems. Failures in particular have drawn a lot of attention. The outcome of the implementation of information and communication systems has often been disastrous. Recent research does not show that results have improved. This raises the question why so many ICT projects perform so badly.
Information, Organization and Information Systems Design: An
Integrated Approach to Information Problems aims at discussing measures to improve the results of information systems. Bart Prakken identifies various factors that explain the shortfall of information systems. Subsequently, he provides a profound discussion of the measures that can be taken to remove the causes of failure.
When organizations are confronted with information problems, they will almost automatically look for ICT solutions. However, Prakken argues that more fundamental and often cheaper solutions are in many cases available. When looking for solutions to information problems, the inter-relationship between organization, information and the people within the organization should explicitly be taken into account. The measures that the author proposes are based on organizational redesign, particularly using the sociotechnical approach. In cases where ICT solutions do have to be introduced, Prakken discusses a number of precautionary measures that will help their implementation.
The book aims to contribute to the scientific debate on how to solve information problems, and can be used in graduate and postgraduate courses. It is also helpful to managers.

Customer Reviews:
What a heap of bunk.......2000-06-14
This novel is a hundred-or-so pages of fluffed-up filler. Common sense is repackaged as 'Auction Secrets' that purport to enable sellers to obtain more money than they would be able to through a real-estate agent. The big question of WHY people would pay more at your auction than they would through a regular sale is left completely unanswered. Annoyingly, the authors have seen fit to arbitrarily replace the letter 'S' in their book with the dollar sign '$', making it much more difficult to read.

Book Description
Stackpole is proud to introduce the Frontier Classics, a new series that aims to resurrect long out-of-print gems of frontier history. Antiquarian and rare book dealers have previously been the only source for these books, providing first editions for premium prices. Now, these books are available in affordable, quality paperback editions, with new historical introductions written by a leading expert in the field. Jacob Lee Humfreville was a Civil War veteran who earned a Regular Army commission as a lieutenant in the 9th U.S. Cavalry, the "Buffalo Soldiers," in 1866. In this beautifully illustrated work, Humfreville offers his observations on all aspects of Plains Indian life. His views were sometimes simplistic, but unfailingly sympathetic.
Customer Reviews:
One of the Best Descriptions Of American Indians and the Opening of the West.......2007-06-12
Capt. Humfreville did not write a 'noble savage' memoir. He was a soldier who fought in the Civil War and two tours of duty in the West. One tour up North among the Sioux and Blackfeet, and a second South against the Commanche and Apache. He was one of several soldiers of the time who related what they had seen out West. I use to think that R.I.Dodge was the best observer but Capt. Humfreville really has the knack for good writing and essential observation.
He didn't see Indians as noble savages but rather as a hugely diverse group. While there were certain similarities across all tribes, each tribe and even sub-tribe had it's own peculiar way of living & outlook on life-he didn't hold back describing these peculiarities. What you read is a white man observing a Stone Age people and telling you how they are different than you,an Industrial Age person.
I've never read such close detail about actual Indian camp life. If you've ever wondered what it would be like to spend time with a Plains Indian family, Capt Humfeville will fill you in on all the details. (Warning-don't show up in rainy season, don't eat from the communal cooking pot if you can help it, and bring your own bedding.)
Some tribes have his admiration,Cheyenne,Sioux,Nez Perces. But other tribes, Kiowa,Apache, his contempt because of their extreme brutality. The Arapaho claim his bewilderment because of their extreme dirtiness and laziness. He assets that marauding parties would not bother to attack Arapaho because they didn't own anything worth taking. At the same time, their bosom allies were the sparkling neat, ever manly Cheyenne. This is an angle I'd never heard before, but the book if full of these insights.
Capt Humfreville goes on to describe the beginnings of the White's move West. He fills you in on the workings of the Pony Express, the Telegraph business, overland shipping by stagecoach.
If you are interested in what the hunting was like,he covers most of the game animals. The chapter on buffalo is exceptional, he actually goes real deep into how to successfully hunt buffalo and survive to tell the tale.
Being that Capt Humfreville was closer in time and in the business, his angle on the Little Bighorn is fascinating. It's a report that has Red Horse and Gall as the central figures, Crazy Horse, the ever able leader, and oddly, Sitting Bull as nothing more than an impostor.
Capt Humfreville writes in a very modern,21st century style, very readable. His fascinating observations and stories make for a very pleasant and informative read.

The End of a People.......2007-10-07
This book, the second in Worth's two-volume set on the Timucuan chiefdoms of Spanish Florida, details the ways in which the missionized Timucuan peoples of northern Florida succumbed to the pressures of European colonization and disappeared as cultures by the 18th century.
The Timucua entered the Spanish colonial system through the mechanism of missionization: the conversion of entire chiefdoms to Roman Catholicism and the establishment of missions in Timucuan territory. But the same mechanisms that led to Timucuan assimilation also led to population collapse due to disease, forced labor, and conflict between the peoples of Spanish La Florida and the emerging British colonies to the north - most particularly Carolina, after the establishment of Charles Town by 1670. Caught within the greater conflicts that exploded into open war by the beginnings of the 18th century, the Timucuan peoples were destroyed as cultures by the 1750's; the last recorded Timucuan Indians left Florida with the Spanish in 1763.
Worth's books provide thorough and detailed historic accounts of the end of Florida's most numerous Native peoples, as well as detailed information and predictions about the locations of the "lost missions" - the Spanish missions recorded by the Spanish as existing but whose locations have since been lost. Both for the archaeologist and historian and the interested general reader, these books are excellent.
Customer Reviews:
Poor choice.......2007-10-17
This is a poor choice for Double Star observers. Basically, it's one big spreadsheet of double star, with comments provided mostly by other observers than the author.
Better to get the tabular data online for free.
Double Stars for Small Telescopes.......2006-11-07
This clearly written book covers the basic information needed to understand the attraction double and multiple stars has to the amateur astronomer and most importantly, how to find them.
Reading the introduction, you realize that the author has an excellent understanding of her subject matter that communicates well to the reader. This shows in her ability to explain and keep my attention (no easy task). Her explanations and examples kept my interest and made me want to start observing immediately. The charts and graphs included illustrate very well the technical aspects of observing with detailed descriptions of the many subtle colors of the stars as they appear to the eye through the telescope. The explanations illustrate how stars are measured by magnitude, color, temperature and separation. A handy chart is printed on how far apart the stars will be separated in various scopes by their aperture.
Four constellations are illustrated labeling the binary stars by season to help you get started right away. An easy to understand legend in front of the first catalog page helps to locate your target and where to look. The catalog is organized by constellations. With each star you are given the right, assent ion, declination, name, year, position angle, separation, magnitude, spectral type, status and observers comments. Most comments, made by contributing astronomers, include the aperture and power of the telescope used.
If you have setting circles on your scope or better yet, a "go to" scope, it makes finding the stars are a snap. Otherwise you need a good atlas and plenty of patience.
Sissy Hass gives us one more pleasure for the use of our scopes in observing the unlimited joys and beauty of our universe. This is a reference book I will keep close by for one of those leisurely nights where I am not rushed to find some other object before it moves out of sight. Where every night is Christmas with the multi-colored lights of a Yule-tide tree.
Book reviewed by Jack Fox, Richmond Astronomical Society
A Double Star Book at Last.......2006-07-05
I liked the observations of various astronomers and the practical knowledge the book offers and the lack of academic theory you get in some books when all you want to do is observe.
Great!
Always useful information, but cheaply presented.......2006-07-03
Having made viewing many of the double stars in the Struve catalogue my annual observing goal for some time, I was happy to hear of this book becoming available. While generally pleased with it, I was disappointed in the final product for several reasons.
First, in this day and age, how can any book obviously designed to be used at the telescope not be bound in a manner so that it will lay flat when opened, preferably spiral-bound?
Second, there are almost no charts whatsoever, just four very basic constellation line drawings showing 15 of the more famous double stars. Surely some monthly charts illustrating in some manner the bright or showpiece doubles could not have been too difficult to include. I have drawn my own from the WDS catalogue data for years. If you have a modern "Go To" scope where coords can be entered and the telescope slews itself to the right point, or at least have digital setting circles, the book will be simple to use. For those without, you'll have to starhop on your own with other charts to the coordinate listings.
Finally, my copy arrived directly from Sky Publishing in a weak padded envelope with no protection and had about four inches of the corner permanently bent from being crushed in transit.
The observing descriptions of the double stars draw from Sissy Haas' own notes, notes from other observers, and from classic handbooks by Webb and Smyth. These are excellent overall and provide a sense of the observing experience far beyond what any robotic reading and sorting of the catalogue data can provide.
I wish there was a 3½ star rating. I gave it 4 in large measure because of the observing comments. Please, PLEASE Sky Publishing, do these "Stargazing Series" publications justice and give them a proper binding and more "meat" than just a listing of digital catalogue data.
