1 out of 5 stars OUT OF STOCK.......2005-08-18

YOU DID NOT SEND ME THIS BOOK. THIS IS THE ONE I REALLY WANTED. I GOT A NOTICE TELLING ME IT WAS OUT OF STOCK.

INSTEAD, WHEN I WAS TRYING TO ORDER THIS, YOUR CROSS-SELLING SYSTEM SOLD ME ON A TWO FOR ONE DEAL....

THE BOOK I ACTUALLY GOT WAS OKAY, GOOD FOR GENERAL CONSTRUCTION KNOWLEDGE BUT NOT THE CONCEPT/DESIGN INFO I WAS LOOKING FOR.

5 out of 5 stars the ultimate source book.......2000-10-31

If you are looking for plans for barn construction, this is the ultimate source book. It also includes sources for everything from stables and garages to sheds and playhouses. A helpful book before beginning a building project.

4 out of 5 stars Great start for ideas.......2000-07-10

Definately designed to get you started with ideas for a small country home. The best part of the book is the references to dealers and builders.

4 out of 5 stars Just What I Was Looking For.......2000-07-05

This book was just what I was looking for to find plans for a horse barn. It's a resource tool, not a picture book. It would be useful to someone who knows what size and type of structure they want to build and don't know where to find the plans. The authors give a good synopsis of the framing options that a homeowner has when considering building, and pros and cons of each. Also, I reccommend reading the paragraphs about laying out your farmstead.

5 out of 5 stars A House-Plan Catalog for Barns!.......1999-08-02

Clever idea! There are 400+ house plan catalogs on Amazon.com - just this one on barns. Pretty, Old-timey barns, fair prices for blueprints, nice directory, fun to read. A good buy!

Flash 5! Creative Web Animation helps any new user get up to speed with Macromedia's powerful Web-design tool. Rich with information and examples, the lessons are designed to help the beginning through intermediate user climb the learning curve toward becoming a proficient designer.

The book devotes over 500 pages to every aspect of the application--from the very beginning ("Why Flash?"); through the basics of the interface, graphics, text, sound, and layers; on to advanced interactivity by using ActionScript and tools like the Library and Movie Explorer for managing large projects; and final project testing.

If there is a drawback to the book, it is the ratio of information to images. Densely packed and rich with data, the book has a noticeable lack of screen shots and illustrations. Many sections could have been made clearer with more accompanying graphics, although this would have inflated the already large page count. Don't let this weak spot deter you from buying this book--it is still a valuable and handy resource, and, at under $40, a good value.

Included on the CD--and worth the cost of the book alone--are over 40 QuickTime videos that parallel the lessons in the book. Each video is large, clear, and concise, and teaches visually how to perform specific tasks. These video clips are a great example of how to use the technology (in this case, Flash, QuickTime, and the CD format) to enhance an educational book and give each lesson greater impact. Some people have no difficulty in learning from a book, while others learn better in a kind of "sit-back-and-watch" state. This combination of book and CD offers both.

Flash 5! Creative Web Animation succeeds on many levels, and should be on the desk of any beginning or intermediate Flash user. --Mike Caputo

    Book Description

Creative Web Animation covers all the newest software enhancements, including a brand new interface, Smart Clips, Movie Explorer, Keyboard Shortcuts, and the fundamentals of programming with ActionScript. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned Flash user, authors Derek Franklin and Brooks Patton lead you step-by-step through the basics of the software's many features and tools, and then move on to interactive tutorials, sample demos and a training tour of Web animation. You'll also find tips for making the development process flow more efficiently, plus a content-rich CD containing all the files for the practice exercises, a trial version of Flash 5, and demos of other Macromedia products.

5 out of 5 stars great for begginers to advanced.......2002-05-24

I would just like to set the record straight. All of the people who rated this book 1 star must have been hoping a magician would have popped out of the book, tapped them on the head with a magic wand, and wallah.... they are now flash jedi masters. This book is well written and easy to understand. The cd-rom is unbelievalble. It uses quicktime videos that walk you through the lessons. Almost as good as having the author sitting right there in front of you explaining the lesson. The book starts with the basics and works through advanced action scripting. As far as I'm concerned, it is the desk reference for people wanting to learn flash. Pick up a copy and open up a world of endless possiblities in interactive website design.

    4 out of 5 stars workable.......2002-02-08

Although I first experienced some problems with the CD contained in this book, on obtaining an exchange copy everything turned out fine. As it happens the CD is one of the best features of this self train publication. With no disrespect intended to the author, I found his monotone voice and slow paced tutorials almost put me to sleep as I worked through the chapters. I might add, publications with CD's are notorious for the errors they contain driving readers mad with frustration. However, "Creative Web Animation", in my experience and others who I know have used it, has no such flaws. Its a good workmanlike offering for beginners and served its purpose for me.

    4 out of 5 stars It's more like a textbook.......2001-07-21

I have just finished reading this book cover-to-cover. It introduces all Flash 5 topics in an organized way- which is exactly what I wanted. But it won't tell you how to be a Flash 5 pro (that's up to you). Now I find that it is a handy reference as I work on projects.

1 out of 5 stars Find me a book that it's worst that this one.......2001-06-28

The cover may look nice but inside it's another story.

You will only learn what each tool can do and nothing else, if that's what you want buy the book else....leave it there.

You won't learn how to create even a nice (flash)movie or any nice effects...

You can find all the stuff they have written, on the net for free.

For me it's the worst book I have ever bought.

1 out of 5 stars Sloppy, qucik out the door for a buck Flash book.......2001-06-25

Yes, once again we see a book that is sloppy full of errors and clearly shows that the authors (and editors) did not give 2 cents for the needs of the consumer as they have chosen to rake in a fast buck without regard for quality control.

This is one great book in my opinion. You might think that fact books are filled with just boring facts, and have no taste in them. This will prove you wrong. It tells everything about Rome, there struggles, their riches, defeats, and especially my favorite, culture. It's like a whole different world when you read this, because you get the true feeling of how it was in Rome. The power, you can almost feel it as if you were the leader at the time. The slaves, the men dying, the women crying, the children confused. I've researched quiet a bit about Rome, and the information listed, is as accurate as it gets. It tells how Rome was built, how it ran, and how it was taken down. It explains how the leaders conquered the land, dominated the world basically. This book contains different rituals, games, military facts, art, and pottery. It gives a brief over view of how each came to be in existence. Art was one of there best sides. Very beautiful pottery was created at the time, many unique and exquisite designs. In the military, everyone took pride in what they did. A lot of people had many different tasks, which means it took many people to run the city. I don't want to say too much, although I might have already. When you get some time, read this book, and you will agree with me when I say, "Rome was one successful empire.

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT BOOK IN THIS SERIES.......2002-03-20

This 166-page book is a wonderful addition to the What Life Was Like series. Every page is filled with beautiful photos of maps, statuary, wall paintings, and everyday objects - children's toys, soldiers gear, bath implements, coins, rings, etc. It is written for the casual reader with vivid, easy to read text. Some of the subjects briefly touched upon: the lives/reigns of Julius Caesar, Augustus and Hadrian; the lives and daily routines of everyday people; soldiers and war; gladiators and games; artisans and tradespeople, etc. Also recommended: WLWL On the Banks of the Nile (Egypt 3050-30BC).

4 out of 5 stars Very readable - and surprisingly good view of Life in Rome.......1999-01-23

I've been reading a lot of Roman history lately and got this book as a gift. It is very readable, and very entertaining. One of the things a most histories miss are the lives of the regular people. We all know about the Ceasars, but how did the regular people live? What was it really like? This book, with illustrations and text, tries to tell the reader - and succeeds.

                Product Description

On January 2, 1963, the South Vietnamese Army (ARVN) and its American advisors were soundly defeated by Viet Cong guerrilla forces at Ap Pac. The loss should have caused U.S. policy makers to question the value of their efforts to train and equip the ARVN troops, but they failed to perceive the battle's significance. In this book, a longtime U.S. Army officer and history professor at West Point provides the most comprehensive treatment of the battle in print. David Toczek not only analyzes the operation in detail but places it in the larger context of the war to better evaluate the meaning of what happened. He shows that U.S. civilian and military leadership missed an opportunity early on to learn from their mistakes when they failed to draw any connection between the ARVN's dismal performance at Ap Bac and American policies toward South Vietnam. Toczek notes that while a few tactical changes resulted from the battle, no policy changes were made, not even to the structure of the advisory system. The author also takes a look at the actions of John Paul Vann, the outspoken U.S. Army advisor at Ap Bac that Neil Sheehan wrote about in his Pulitzer Prize-winning book A Bright Shining Lie. Such a careful examination of a battle seen as a metaphor of the entire Vietnam War will prove useful to readers today eager to avoid the pitfalls of the past as they consider how best to fight insurgents of the 21st century.

"The Battle of AP BAC Vietnam" by David M. Toczek (Assistant Professor of History, United States Military Academy, West Point, New York), is aptly subtitled 'They Did Everything But Learn From It'. On January 2, 1963, the South Vietnamese Army (known by the acronym ARVN) and its American advisers were soundly defeated by Viet Cong Guerrilla forces at Ap Bac. A true military disaster, the American military and civilian leadership failed to perceive its significance and continued to pursue the ultimately unsuccessful policy of equipping and training ARVN troops. A military officer, historian, and academician, David Toczek aptly analyzes the AP BAC operation in detail, while properly placing it within the broader context of the Vietnam War. Toczck persuasively contents that American civilian and military leadership missed a vital opportunity to learn from their mistakes, that not even the structure of the American military advisory system was changed. More than just a superbly researched and written history of a battle in a war now more than 40 years ago, "The Battle of AP BAC Vietnam" needs to be read carefully by today's military and civilian leadership as we are once again engaged in combats in Iraq and Afghanistan against urban and rural guerrilla forces. Otherwise the age old axiom of those who fail to understand history are doomed to repeat it.

                        Book Description

This companion volume to the previous, widely acclaimed Guide to the Identification and Natural History of the Sparrows of the United States and Canada takes sparrow identification one step further. The authors have gathered a stunning selection of over 350 photographs as a basis for the identification of all 64 taxa of emberizine sparrows found in the region. Never before has such a comprehensive collection of sparrow photos been presented together in a single guide.

The supporting text gives detailed information on the identification of species, sexes, ages, races, and forms of all the sparrows, towhees, juncos, buntings and longspurs, grassquits and seedeaters, as well as information on their distribution, habits, habitats, molt, and voice. Particular attention is paid to the geographic variation found in many species and to comparisons with similar and confusing species. The conservation status of those that are threatened is also given due attention.

The photographs include contributions from many of America's finest bird photographers, and many were taken especially for this book. All fine portraits in themselves, they have been chosen specifically to illustrate the identification pointers described in the text. Each is captioned with full details of the photographer and the place and time at which the photo was taken. Also included are line drawings of identification details such as wing and tail feathers and beaks, as well as distribution maps.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book for id of sparrows!!.......2003-11-28

In the winter time here in Virginia we get a number of differnt types of sparrows that migrate in. I love watching them but was having difficulty determining which types were which from just the regular field guides so I asked around and one of our local birders recommended this to me. Its terrific! The pictures of the birds are close-up - as if you were holding the bird or were sitting on the ground less than a foot away looking at the bird. This really helps when trying to distinguish the slight differences in colors or patterns. Each species has a chapter that strats out with measurements (size, weight etc) then there's a range map, and some text on habitat, then some text on behavior and voice/songs. There's writing about similar species, geographic variation, distribution (winter, breeding, migration periods), conservation status, and molt. There's also text descriptions for specific markings etc to hone in on, and discussion of hybrids if any. Then the chapter has pictures, of boys, girls, adults, juveniles, etc. Really a great book that has helped me a lot. I'd buy it again in a heart beat.
