Book Description
When first invited to give talks and demonstrations on carving techniques to school children, Howard K. Suzuki quickly found out that wood was not the most suitable medium. It took too long to show much progress in the limited time available. He decided to use bars of soap to demonstrate basic techniques on carving and sculpturing. Soap is an inexpensive and very desirable carving medium. Soon demonstrations developed into hands-on experiences for his students.
In this book, Dr. Suzuki describes and illustrates with color photographs how to make safe and simple wooden carving tools. He demonstrates basic soap-carving techniques using several stepwise how-to examples, from a simple heart to a more complex turtle. Dr. Suzuki integrates art and science into his instructions and combines them to produce a super learning experience for children (of all ages) who do learn to carve through his methods.

carving for kids.......2007-02-18
Excellent book for carving. The kids enjoyed it. Well written and illustrated.
Great! Clever popsicle stick carving tools!.......2005-06-28
This book is a gem in the rough. It is not slick or up-to-date looking, but it contains excellent instructions on carving soap as a prelude to carving wood. The author, an engineer, shows you how to create carving tools out of popsicle sticks. This is the one of the coolest craft ideas I have ever seen and it worked very well with a group of children from my church. Not only does he describe how to make a basic carving tool (by cutting a diagonal and then sharpening the "blade" on sandpaper) but he shows how to make a gouge and other tools too.
The main part of the book contains detailed instructions on how to carve several different objects (a heart, a turtle, a dolphin coming out of water, and more), with a picture showing each stage of the carving process. These were great instructions for me; the children I worked with (ages 5-10) could have used easier models/instructions. This book is great because it shows how to introduce a new fun craft activity, carving, in a way that works for groups of kids safely and without much expense. The kids loved it!

Book Description
The nineteenth century was a remarkable period in art history during which the practices of painting, printmaking, and photography intersected in new and unexpected ways. Massive changes in the technology of reproduction took place, and France in particular became a leading testing ground for new printing and photographic techniques. This abundantly illustrated book investigates for the first time the complex and lively interactions between painting, printmaking, and photography in France during the 1800s. Cultural historian Stephen Bann explores why rising reproductive media did not supplant traditional modes and how, instead, printmakers, photographers, and painters influenced and inspired each other's work, together creating a visual culture of unique richness and breadth. The book focuses especially on pictorial reproduction involving painting, printmaking, and photography in combination. Bann includes in the discussion the interweaving careers of Ingres and such contemporary painters as Vernet and Delaroche, such printmakers as lithographer Nicolas Charlet and engraver Luigi Calamatta, and such pioneering photographers as Niépce, Daguerre, and Robert Bingham. Setting the nineteenth-century issues of reproduction in the context of art history and theory, Bann also offers insights into the nature of art reproduction in our own era of radically changing reproduction technology.

How new technologies enhanced these mediums.......2002-02-05
Stephen Bann's Parallel Lines focuses on printmakers and photographers in 19th century France, when practices of printmaking and photography began changing. This considers relationships between painting, printmaking and photography during the period and how new technologies enhanced these mediums.

Book Description
How can you obtain real productivity results from all this Web technology your company has just purchased ? How can you master the confusing watershed of over-hyped concepts, killer-apps and born-again Pure-play consultants ? This book is the outcome of many discussions with managers dealing with the rise of e-business - at firm and/or team level. Pundits claim that the Web and its applications are poised to trigger a profound workplace revolution. However, most people confuse two related but different issues: - technological revolutions are those ground-breaking scientific or technological achievements that drastically change the tools used to produce a good or service; - productivity (or managerial) revolutions are changes in methods, organization or use of tools which result in vast increases in per capita output. This book shows that the web's real promise lies in a service productivity revolution. It is structured to help the reader in his or her understanding of this three-step transformation: - "business as usual, but faster": basic uses of e-technologies, such as e-mail, Websites, online research and how simple tools can be used effectively to obtain office productivity improvements; - "same business, new channels": opening up of the cybermarket has created new business channels for communication and distribution to customers. Draw the implications for your business of developments such as e-commerce, marketplaces, Internet marketing and intranets; - "the e-management revolution": welcome to the e-revolution - explore how the Web inventors' dreams lead to a constant flow of new Web based applications and how these might, as they get absorbed by the market, change the face of business as we know it. Michael BALLE, Ph.D., is a management consultant and writer. He has written extensively about industry dynamics and continuous improvement systems. Godefroy BEAUVALLET is currently eGovernement strategy advisor to the French government. He has written about the uses of IT in complex organizations.

Customer Reviews:
Waste.......2003-06-11
This book is a waste of time, especially if you have anything complicated in your home-buying transaction (and who doesn't?). It's also sexist - they actually recommend that two people in a couple (because obviously anyone who is buying a house must be in a heterosexual relationship) go and read _men are from mars, women are from venus_. spare me.
Well done..........2002-02-22
The best of the four home-buying books I read or skimmed. The key is that it is unbiased and written from the buyer's perspective, usually with humor. Most other books are not. Exposes a lot of the unseen motives from the various players in the process, particularly real estate agents. Has lots of useful tips and is more comprehensive than most similar books.
It looks like the home real estate industry is changing rapidly with the MLS/Internet and discount realtors popping up. It seems I've seen more "for sale by owner" signs and/or discount realtor signs than standard realtor signs during my recent home search. It is clear that it no longer costs a realtor 5-7% of home price to market a house with Internet (especially expensive ones), so something has to give somewhere. They ought to update this book every few years.
Easing the fears to confidence.......2000-08-22
When my fiancee and found out that our rental house is going to be demolished (2 weeks before our wedding), we decided to "Try" to buy a house. The first thing I did was buy this book. It has helped us realize that yes, we can afford it, how it may even be financially good for us! All of my fears about being uprooted were calmed, and as we read each chapter together each night I feel more and more confident about the process and pitfalls of finding and buying our very first home! This book has answered EVERY question we have had, and pointed out situations to watch for that would have otherwise been unknown to us. We're going to prove to all of our friends and family that we CAN do it, and that we did it ourselves (with the help of a little book).
It explains everything from shopping till moving in.......1999-09-06
The unoffical guide is definetly unoffical. It is the only book I have found that explains the home buying as a professional friend would. It contains a copy of the actual documents the banks and mortgage brokers use. The process takes you through the steps of getting prepared physically and mentally, financial aspects, what to shop for, closing, then moving in and fixing it up. It's the only book I've read that gives specific details of how to fix or work with credit problems. If you are a first time or any time buyer I strongly suggest the unoffical guide to buying a home.
How to make the very most of your home purchase!.......1999-01-22
Read "The Unofficial Guide to Buying a Home" before you go house-hunting and you'll save time and money and avoid a lot of headaches. The author provides a crystal-clear, enjoyably readable, step-by-step, logical approach to home buying. His menu of financing options is astonishingly comprehensive, and he even explains how the reader can determine the amount of mortgage he/she can afford. You won't get bamboozled by all the hype you might hear from loan officers (as I did the last time the last time I bought a home). The insider information I got from this book was fantastic -- and easy to understand!
Even though I've now bought my dream home with the aid of this book, Perlis's suggestions keep coming to the forefront. I'm following the book's advice on how to maintain an older home, how to make space more functional, and how to maximize my home's value with a minimum of cash. As with everything else in this book, the author is right on target.
(By the way, the correct title is "The Unofficial Guide to Buying a Home," not "Your First Home," as Amazon advertises. In fact, any homebuyer, however experienced, will find this a most helpful and valuable book.)

In depth writing based on true examples.......2004-06-29
Many entries are in depth based on true stories. The description about group is very well thought. The author categorize the group members into the one tougher, the one smarter, the one sensitive, the one rather rash and the one deprived, is quite interesting on page 45. Her explanation of how a child get involve with the gang and how one isolates from the group is also very logical, natural and convincing.
The synthesis of the whole book centered around the adolescence¡¦s quest for identity. Her example of panic attack related to conforming on page 56 is a powerful psychoanalysis. Her insight about the adolescence¡¦s desire to separate from their parents by dressing differently or creating a crisis is also well explained through out the chapter.
I enjoyed reading this book very much, because it is not wordy and to the point. The font is big. Sometimes it was really funny, because often the author talked about a serious problem of adolescent from a distance in chapter one. The best of this book, is that it cites a lot of real examples, revealing the naked truth of adolescent experiences through out the book. I would suggest this book and the following books of this series to writers, because they can experience the true life of different ages, therefore they could understand the psychology of adolescent and write for a deeper and more vivid character. I enjoyed this book as reading a novel in postmodern style. Some parents might feel this book disappointed, because the book mostly unveils the conflict, confusion, anxiety and dreadful feelings of this age and the parents¡¦ disability to deal with the problems. It lacks giving strategy or tips for the parents in a clearly format. This book is excellent in telling what adolescent are but rarely providing clear concrete suggestion about how to deal with their problems. However, all parents should read this book. Through true understanding, I believe parents can create their own strategy better than ready to use formula of advises.

Customer Reviews:
Very informative information on the Birds in Hawaii.......2005-09-09
This was my first trip to Hawaii, and went to several islands, the birds are just beautiful and I took several pictures of the birds, and nowhere could I find what the birds were. This book had every single bird that we had seen there, as well as information on the birds. I recommend this book to everyone that goes to Hawaii, as a matter of fact, purchase it before they go. You'll enjoy it very much!

Excellent logistics guide.......2000-04-19
I found this book to be indespensible in identifying where to go and how to get there. A section on each of the major islands, and then regions on a per island basis makes it easy to use. Pratt identifies which birds you can expect to see in each of the birding spots identified. Although color plates of many of the species are included, this is not a species classification guide per-se. You'll need a separate guide for that. But you can't see them if you don't know where to go or how to get there, and that's where this book shines. I shutter to think of the time we would have wasted without it.
Informative, accurate, attractive.......1999-07-11
Pratt takes the reader island by island, site by site, through all the best spots to find birds in the islands. Illustrated with excellent color photographs, the guide tells you what to expect in terms of species to see, directions on getting there, and possible hazards (mud, rough roads, irritable hunters, etc.). Following the site descriptions, Pratt adds a section on each species to be found in the islands, listing the places it is most likely to be found. The emphasis is on clear information, but Pratt's lucid interesting writing style makes the book a pleasure to read as well. I have used it on Kaua'i and Hawai'i and would not think of birding the other islands without it. Indispensible!
