    Book Description

Slipware was for centuries the traditional rural pottery of Europe and America--until the Industrial Revolution with its streamlined and mechanical production methods almost brought about its demise. For many years it survived only in country areas, but a renewed interest in its techniques and appreciation of its rich, vibrant qualities has today brought slipware to the forefront as a pottery of choice.

In this engaging and informative book, Victoria Eden and Michael Eden trace the history of slipware, discuss the techniques involved, and cover a wide cross-section of contemporary practice. The abundant illustrations include over two hundred striking images reflecting the current work of an international group of artists, along with a variety of traditional pieces.

Slipware will serve as an inspiration for potters and a source of visual delight for all those interested in contemporary ceramics. In addition to the illustrations, the book offers practical information about the subject and will appeal to students and anyone interested in ceramics in general and in current interior design trends.

4 out of 5 stars Technical Stuff you need to know.......2000-05-29

This is a great resource book for serious, but fun-loving potters who want to enhance their technical knowledge of slipware technique. I found the variety of artists illustrations very helpful, even though I did not like all of their work. There was plenty here to learn from and have fun with at the same time. A good reference text.

4 out of 5 stars good technical assistance.......2000-05-29

I found this book an easy read and very helpful for someone like myself who is just beginning to explore slipware as a particular way to deorate my pots. the artists that were included were interesting and challenging. This is definitely a book for serious students of the decorative arts, but only serious students who want to have fun!

    Book Description

Edward Bernds came to Hollywood in 1928 to help United Artists make the transition to sound. He worked with some of the most notable directors in Hollywood including Frank Capra, Leo McCarey, and Howard Hawks. Luckily for film historians and readers of this book, he kept meticulous diaries during most of those years.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Interesting portrait of Hollywood in the early-talkie years.......2003-04-02

The late writer-director Edward Bernds has become a familiar name to movie comedy fans, through his association with The Three Stooges, The Bowery Boys, the Blondie series, and a host of other comedy stars. But Mr. Bernds made his reputation as a recording engineer during the early-talkie years, and was the number-one sound man at Columbia Pictures until he took on more creative duties.

This book chronicles Bernds's early years, from his first radio jobs through his successful association with director Frank Capra. Bernds was a stickler for accuracy, and drew upon his old diaries to confirm his excellent memory for facts and faces. He was just as careful to spell things out for the reader, explaining a technical process or a business practice to amplify the point he was making. Bernds's attention to detail makes for good, solid reading.

This writer was disappointed that the book stops when the author stopped working as a soundman. But it's understandable because Bernds, in his thoroughness, would have written a mammoth volume if his entire career were to be discussed. Joseph McBride recognizes the "missing" material by appending a more general interview with Bernds, conducted by McBride and Leonard Maltin.

Film buffs and historians will enjoy "Mr. Bernds." For those who want Bernds's observations and recollections of his Three Stooges years, read "The Columbia Comedy Shorts" by Ted Okuda and Edward Watz.

5 out of 5 stars The Golden Age of Hollywood from an Insider.......1999-12-13

When Hollywood first started to shine golden, Ed Bernds was there. He knew and worked with the stars, the directors and the writers, and contributed no little himself to Hollywood's Golden Age. In "Mr. Bernds Goes To Hollywood," Ed tells -- with near total recall -- of his journey to the movie capital in the earliest days of sound (which was his speciality) and of his career at Columbia Studios, the King of "Poverty Row," with the likes of Frank Capra, Clark Gable and the feared studio head Harry Cohn. In telling his story, Bernds invokes a bygone era of Hollywood glamor with an inside knowledge that few today possess. Necessary books on Hollywood are few and far between, but "Mr. Bernds Goes To Hollywood" fills the bill.

    5 out of 5 stars Behind-the-scenes Hollywood talent SHINES!.......1999-09-04

Edward Bernd's autobiography is a wonderful insight into the life and career of a Hollywood talent whose career lay behind the camera.

The book only covers the first half of his life, from his childhood in Chicago to his career as a top sound engineer at Columbia Studios. Bernds' engineering career encompassed the films of Frank Capra (Capra always requested Ed for his team), the many classics of Moe, Larry and Curly, and many major Columbia feature productions through 1945.

The reader is left wanting more, particularly the details of Bernds' new post-1945 career of writer and director for the Three Stooges, the Blondie series, the Bowery Boys and Elvis Presley. But, that's another book. Right, Ed?

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Story of Early Hollywood.......1999-05-15

Have you ever dreamed you could make it big in Hollywood? Countless dreams have been shattered in this town, but one young man made it, and this is his story. Rarely will one encounter a more modest telling of a life's story. Yet Ed's tale rings so true and so right that you can't help but be drawn in. From making a crystal radio set as a teen, to snaring the top sound position with Frank Capra, Mr. Bernds entertains, informs, and delights us in the telling.

One of the reasons why this book is so fresh is that its author works not just from memory, but from detailed diaries. The tale of his trip west to Hollywood in a broken down jalopy fairly crackles. Genuinely good story telling accents this lively account of the early talkie era. Recommended to anyone who would enjoy a stroll through the inside of Hollywood, spoken by a real movie sound pioneer.

          Book Description

In every discipline, one of the most powerful tools in the hands of educators, researchers and managers is documented cases based on real life experiences of others. The strongest organizations are those that adopt "best practice" concepts from others and adapt them to fit their own situation. This is particularly true for IT implementation and implications.

Success and Pitfalls of IT Management is a collection of actual, real life cases dealing with a variety of issues, trends, application, opportunities and lessons in the overall utilization of IT in organizations. Cases included in this book report not only successful utilization of IT applications, but also failures and mismanagement of IT resources and applications. These documented cases are tremendous sources of knowledge, ideas, innovation and lessons related to the utilization and management of information technology in modern organizations throughout the world.

                  Book Description

Along with General Claire Chennault's "Flying Tigers," the men and planes of the 490th Bomb Squadron became famous as the "Burma Bridge Busters." From late 1942 to the end of the war, their incredible feats of low-level bombing and strafing of Japanese-held bridges, airfields, and troop facilities in occupied Burma hindered the Japanese advance in Asia, and provided critical air support for the allies fighting on the ground. The author's uncle, a radioman/waist gunner in the 490th, was killed on a mission in the waning days of the war. This book is both a search for his memory, and a tribute to the squadron in which he proudly served and sacrificed his life—the "Burma Bridge Busters."

5 out of 5 stars A emotional journey back thru time!.......2000-11-12

Jim Vesely presents an interesting treatment of the life of American aircrews and support personnel by combining operational reports, veteran naratives and some letters from his uncle Sgt Adolph 'Otsie' Malovich, who was killed-in-action while serving his country, his family and his comrades. Mr. Vesely shares his heart with the reader, explaining his search to know more about the uncle he barely knew, and what Otsie's time might have been like while he was part of the 'Burma Bridge Busters', 490th Bomb Squadron. The author beautifully highlights how this group of men, serving in one of the remotest actions of the war, performed with gallantry, dignity and dedication. A must read for anyone interested in American participation in the China-Burma-India theater!

5 out of 5 stars Well done, well done indeed........2000-10-14

The author did a magnificent job of telling the story of a bunch of kids who were handed a tough job and went about getting that job done, even at the ultimate cost...the book will always occupy a place of honor on my bookshelf.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Splendid Job!.......2000-10-13

Well written, educational, well-researched, and intensely interesting. I learned more about the war in and around India, Burma, and China from this book than from my experience in the two plus years I was in the squadron. I really appreciate that aspect. The author must have spent untold hours researching the facts and then did a splendid job of putting it all together in an interesting way. The book helps a lot in putting a time frame on some of my memories. Thanks again.

                  Book Description

Ten years ago when Charles Colson's top-selling Against the Night appeared, he described the demise of Western culture as the "new dark ages." The book describes in particular the ominous shadows that have engulfed politics, family life and education. Today as we face the new millennium, the book is still pertinent, as the darkness has not lifted. It seems in many ways to have thickened. Against the Night, however, is not pessimistic. It gives Christians hope that as we regain our vision of living in God's kingdom and being God's people, we will be a light in the darkness.

                  5 out of 5 stars Insightful Analysis.......2007-05-15

While the barbarians who pillaged the Roman empire could be identified by their physical appearance, today's barbarians have no such distinguishing marks. The warfare is mental and spiritual. It is an insidiuous mindset that is at work destroying individuals, families, communities, churches, universities, and nations. In essence that mindset could be summarized as "selfish materialism," i.e., the assumption that one lives for oneself and this life is all there is to existence.

The tentacles of this monster extend to every area of modern life, including the church. Colson gives convincing examples in presenting his case. Christians of previous generations knew they were living for something greater than "self." That reality is not so apparent anymore. One has to cultivate it.

In the concluding section, he argues that Christians must fight the good fight regardless of the outcome. Being in the world, but not of the world, Christians of earlier generations preserved culture, not because that was their primary goal, but as a side-effect of seeking to obey God. He concludes the same is expected of this generation.

Colson has a good theme for this book but has so much unnecessary information that the reading is tedious. This is the "updated" version .... too bad it didn't get better editorial work. It had potential.

5 out of 5 stars Good motivational text everybody/Christian needs to hear!.......1996-10-29

I've always enjoyed Chuck Colson's writings. The style is easy to read and clear, like you would be having a conversation with the author. When he was with President Nixon's Cabinet, he was going the way of all politians - POWER. But some humbling time in jail gave him time to think about the important things in life. Family, God, and his spiritual condition. He turned his life around and changed the way he was headed by receiving Jesus Christ as Savior, Lord, and Life. Making a new committment to serve Jesus and others, especially fellow prisoners. His work with justice, jails, and Jesus are very well acknowledged now. (search: colson, prison fellowship) In his book Against the Night, you are shown what the darkness looks like and how to compare it to the Light. Quickly you are given practical examples and stories of how insignificant people, in the world's eyes, made a change in their life and the lives of others by caring about what was happening around them, to others, and shown that a little caring followed by a little action can make big changes for the betterment of all of us. I would recommend this book highly to anyone and to everyone who wants to come Against the Night.

When David James Duncan was growing up in suburban Portland, Oregon, he had no river to call his own, so he would routinely create one by flooding his mother's garden with a hose. He would then revel in his creation until he received the inevitable scolding. The poor kid couldn't help himself: "Running water ... felt as necessary to me as food, sleep, parents, and air," he explains. In time, he exchanged his nozzle for a fly rod and went in search of grander gardens, eventually developing an "interior coho compass" which he has traveled by ever since.

As any reader of The River Why knows, Duncan is a master of the art of writing about fishing--which is also to say life, since the two for him are indelibly linked. But these essays deal with far more than leaky waders and rising trout. Part memoir, part activist treatise, My Story As Told by Water is Duncan's love song to wild places and the creatures which inhabit them. The book's highlight is his powerfully convincing essay "A Prayer for the Salmon's Second Coming," in which he argues that saving salmon is crucial to both man and fish alike: "A 'modern Northwest' that cannot support salmon is unlikely to support 'modern Northwesterners' for long," he writes. In this elegant demand for the removal of four Snake River dams (out of 221 on the Snake/Columbia system), Duncan declares the wild salmon "a holiness, a divine gift," a role model rather than a resource: "Salmon are a light darting not just through water, but through the human mind and heart. Salmon help shield us from fear of death by showing us how to follow our course without fear, and how to give ourselves for the sake of things greater than ourselves."

He also ruminates on the true meanings of "place" and "home"; offers a fable on the 1872 Mining Act, "the most anachronistic and devastating piece of 'corporate welfare' in the world"; and details how Montanans rallied to prevent a giant mining company from extracting gold near the Blackfoot River, the setting of the Norman Maclean classic A River Runs Through It. All in all, My Story As Told by Water is a moving collection by an exquisite writer endowed with wit, compassion, and the rare ability to appeal to both emotion and reason in equal measures. --Shawn Carkonen

                  Book Description

In this remarkable collection of essays, David James Duncan, award-winning author of The River Why, braids his contemplative, activist, and rhapsodic voices together into a potently distinctive whole, speaking with power and urgency about the vital connections between our water-filled bodies and this water-covered planet.
The twenty-two essays in this collection swirl and eddy around the author's early-forged bond with the rivers of the Pacific Northwest and their endangered native salmon. With a bracing blend of story, logic, science, and humor, Duncan relates mystical, life-changing fishing adventures; draws incisive portraits of the humans and wild creatures who shaped his destiny; attacks the corporate greed and political folly that have brought whole ecosystems to ruin; and meditates on the spiritual and practical necessity of acknowledging our dependence on water in its primal state.

The conflicted fiction and non-fiction writer delivers a masterpiece. Thank you David.

                  2 out of 5 stars Self-indulgent nonsense.......2005-08-12

Duncan is a masterful wordsmith; this no one can reasonably dispute. But over the years, he has become so full of himself, so pretentious and self-important, that to me he is almost unreadable.

I give the book two stars because of a little bit of excellent fly fishing content, and because of Duncan's undeniable writing ability. But before you buy it, you should read Donald Miller's hilarious send-up of Duncan (whom he labels Trendy Writer) in "Blue Like Jazz." Don Miller -- now there's a guy who has something significant to say on metaphysical themes. Duncan is merely showing off; Khwaja Khadir indeed!

1 out of 5 stars Stereotypical, obvious, pompus.......2004-04-03

Duncan's textbook rants are so predictable I found myself mouthing the next sentence before I read it. As someone who's work and life is submerged in environmental, water use, and preservation issues I find this type of stereotypical ranting more detrimental to the issues that concern me than most G.W. policies. Duncan preaches to the choir, but his preaching is so over the top it is a turn-off. While I agree with virtually every theme and policy he promotes, his pompus diatribes push me in the other direction. If this book were written 40 years ago it might strike a radical tone and inspire action. In these times it is merely a rehash of the new-age mumbo-jumbo that is so easy for the opposition to tear down.

This book will apeal to two audiences: new-age sheep, and right-wingers looking to bash environmentalists. The rest will find it harder to wade through than Columbia.

                  4 out of 5 stars Henry Bugbee.......2004-03-06

For those who are interested in the life and teaching of Henry Bugbee, Duncan's account of Henry's last days makes this book worth reading.

3 out of 5 stars My Story As Told By Water.......2003-11-06

My Story As Told By Water by David James Duncan was a confusing and overly political way to express the author's love for water. HIs diliverey is good, but he should keep in mind that his readers are reading for entertainment, not to hear about our government's poor decisions.

By classifying the personality types of children, Anne Stone pinpoints the places where children are vulnerable to the wiles of cults and other harmful forms of religion. LIVING IN THE LIGHT is a parent's handbook for rearing children free of superstition and supernaturalism, to the end that they may grow up to be self-actualizing, happy adults.

                  2 out of 5 stars A commendable effort.......2002-08-15

This book addresses a very important issue that every freethinking parent eventually faces -- how to raise your child so that he/she will not fall victim to religious indoctrination. As a freethinker and a parent of a young child, I am rather dismayed by the lack of information available; I wish for my child to think for himself, and never be lured into accepting irrational dogma on blind faith. How can I best ensure this healthy outcome?

Obviously, there is no 100% effective "inoculation" short of indoctrination, which is precisely what I wish to avoid. This book makes some concrete suggestions: some are dubious, most are basically rational, and a few (very few) I would even call gems. I particularly liked Ms. Stone's continual emphasis on nurturing curiosity, and helping children to become good "scientists" -- i.e. encouraging them to ask unending questions and to seek answers for themselves. Perhaps the most insightful and valuable comment in the entire book is that humor is the best defense against indoctrination. Through humor, one can often broach topics and play with ideas that
might otherwise appear to be off limits.

What I did not like about the book is the rather pointed anti religious tone, such as the use of "godmonger" rather than a neutral word such as "theist" or "religionist". While I too dislike those who would inculcate my child with theistic thinking, I would prefer not to pass this resentment on to my child. I'd much rather foster a curiosity of and a respect for other points of view. I feel it would have been much more positive and constructive had Ms. Stone set a good example of sternly but respectfully disagreeing with religionists. There is entirely too much name calling on both sides of the issue.

The book also suffers from many typos and grammatical errors. More importantly, it's unclear where some of the suggestions come from; are they from personal experience, or controlled studies, or are they merely hearsay? There is no way to independently evaluate the merits of her suggestions. References to relevant studies, or at least more disclosure on the source of the ideas would have greatly increased the value of the book. Finally, I was not at all persuaded by the author's penchant for classifying children into personality categories; it struck me as very dogmatic and unscientific, especially given the lack of references to studies or other literature that might corroborate Ms. Stone's classification scheme.

Unfortunately, I cannot give this book a strong endorsement, despite Ms. Stone's commendable effort, and the appalling lack of books on this topic.

A good easy-reading parenting book, with helpful ideas and thought provoking topics when raising children in a anti-atheist world.

                  5 out of 5 stars A good buy.......2001-07-17

This is a very intelligent and well rounded book! A must for free thinking parents

1 out of 5 stars Happy go lucky.......2001-07-03

Ms. Stone's opinions are better fit for fantasy/sci-fi literature--in the realm of Frank Herbert. Her psuedo-intellectual ramblings are only helpful for other psuedo-intellectuals who need an icon to base their own misguided attempts at RE-explaining everything in the universe. This type of purposeful avoidance of "common" sense, and uncomprehensible ignorance of wisdom, logic and rationale, makes for a great manifesto of pettiness. With the absence of letters following the surname of Stone (such as PhD, or MD), I find it difficult to take the information seriously. For those of you who believe that all genius does not have to be clarified by a university degree . . . I still don't see much mention of Ms. Stone in the popular culture. As an example of a free thinker, the book should be free as well. There is a huge difference between a skeptic and an unwavering cynic.

A word of advice . . . skip the book and TALK with your kids (without the advice of the book). It's cheaper, and will help them become much more psychologically stable and more socially tolerant than this book could ever (pretend to) provide. Otherwise, her critically acidic rants will provide hours of blank expressions. These are thinly veiled diatribes against any GROUP Ms. Stone doesn't agree with, usually religions. Besides, at Halloween, who couldn't LOVE a "costume burning" party to show the rest of the world that your kids are intelligent, well-rounded and enlightened beyond any dull-witted adults who still give their kids comic books to read.

If you think I am being meanspirited . . . try reading the book!

                  4 out of 5 stars surprising.......2001-02-28

Let's face it--in the past, most stuff from American Atheist press has been cranky, whiny and intellectually pretentious. Not this book. Anne R. Stone writes with a poetic flair concerning the challenges of rearing a child without resort to religious traditions and practices. From the beautiful cover art (drawn by the author) to the lyrical descriptions of the dance of life between mother and child, this book is on an entirely different plane from the usual atheist grind. In fact, if one did not know better, the title, style and presentation of the book would suggest that the author is a New Ager or a religionist herself. She is remarkably sympathetic to believers, finding their belief rooted in universal human needs (she even recommends listening to "Jesus Christ Superstar" with your kids!) But when the rubber hits the road, she will not yield one inch to supersitition.

More women than ever before are taking their place in the bastions of freethought, resulting in a certain joy in life as it is expressed through writing and the visual arts rather than the dry intellectual asceticism of white male atheism. This book is a classic example. Readers who enjoy it might also try "The Sacred Depths of Nature" by Ursula Goodenough.

5 out of 5 stars Great pocket guide!.......2006-10-31

I didn't want to lug around a big book for our trip to Costa Rica, so I ordered this small guide, hoping it would do. It was terrific - in fact, all our Costa Rican guides coveted it. Almost every bird we saw was in it. There is only one hummingbird and one egret I couldn't find in it, and we saw at least 45 different species. It fit in the pocket of my cargo pants, and it was easy to pull it out and quickly find each bird. I highly recommend this guide if you will be visiting Costa Rica.

                                4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2006-05-14

This is a good bird book for Costa Rica. It uses the Stiles and Skutch classification system. Uses real bird photographs. It does not contain every bird but the 252 species within the book are the ones most likely to be seen. It is easy to read and helpful and does not weigh a ton like the other Costa Rica birding books. I highly recommend it. You can buy it in the Juan Santamaria airport and in some resorts.
