Book Description

How To Build Your Own Low- Cost Timber and Beam House provides step-by-step directions from finding logs to finishing the house. I built a 1200 square foot house for $22,000, during 1992-5.

Chapter 1 tells how I located my land, chose tools, and located the logs. I purchased a small sawmill, which I tell how to use, even how to cut the siding used on the house; also how to lay a foundation and get utilities.

Chapter 2: How to construct the sill and floor beams. Chapter 3: How to design the house you want, using my own as illustration, then how to construct the first- story walls using simple equipment, including the hardware I used and methods of raising the wall frames with door and window frames as part of the structure.

Chapter 4: How to frame the second story. I present several design options, then describe my experience with the barn style I choose. Here you'll learn how to design and raise the ridgepole, construct the barn style rafters, and set them in place.

Chapter 5: How to apply the roof decking and roof. Chapter 6: How to dry in the structure and how I proceeded by laying flooring and installing siding alternately. I describe types of wall sheathing (e.g. blackboard or aluminized) and how to finish the framing for doors and windows.

Chapter 7: Details about how to make and apply exterior siding from the log supply using a small sawmill, after a brief description of types of siding options, including how to install the siding for both the first and second stories.

Chapter 8: How to finish the interior, including constructing a stairway, installing plumbing and fixtures, installing electrical wiring and fixtures, wall treatments, kitchen cabinets, and floor finishing such as tile. The book contains 21 color photos and 30 diagrams. Pb, 132 pp.

1 out of 5 stars Self-published diary.......2006-03-14

I am in the process of building my own post and beam home with lumber we are pioneering from our own property.

I've gathered far more than the information contained in this book using great on-line resources and discussion forums on wood milling and my partner and I are both skilled enough to complete significantly better designs and plans than this author.

The book appears to be a self-published. It would have maybe been worth a 99 cent download of an e-book, but hardly worth the nearly $17 when I would have rather spent it on some more prefessional books here on Amazon.

Great if you know nothing about construction and cannot figure out how to use the A9 or Google searches to get the same information. Save your money. Buy a post and beam construction book that has real information and photos in it.

    Book Description

Portraiture occupies a central position in the history of Western art. It has been the most popular genre of painting and has been crucial to the construction and articulation of individualism. Despite this, its status within academic art theory is uncertain and there is no adequate critical analysis of the subject available. With an international team of specialists, including Patricia Simmons, Ludmilla Jordanova, John Gage, Marcia Pointon and Ernst Van Alphen, this volume provides a much-needed, comprehensive and up-to-date introduction to the major issues in the history of portraiture. The book's chapters are structured chronologically, progressing from the Italian Renaissance to Dutch seventeenth-century portraiture and on to Picasso, surrealism, Lucian Freud and Cindy Sherman. Each chapter examines the key developments in portraiture within each specific period, complete with analytical subheadings, making this an ideal book for students.

      Book Description

Portraits were the most widely commissioned paintings in 18th-century France, but most portraits were produced for private consumption, and were therefore seen as inferior to art designed for public exhibition. The French Revolution endowed private values with an unprecedented significance, and the way people responded to portraits changed as a result. This is an area which has largely been ignored by art historians, who have concentrated on art associated with the public events of the Revolution. Seen from the perspective of portrait production, the history of art during the Revolution looks very different, and the significance of the Revolution for attitudes to art and artists in the 19th century and beyond becomes clearer.

Chris Tompkins sees us all,as we are,and makes us laugh with him,at him and ourselves. Read his books and feel better. Chris has written two other books that I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Humor in tradition of Thurber, Benchley revived........1997-07-29

Although admittedly I'm partial, being one of the author's sons, Chris Tompkins is a master of telling a story in the style of humorists of past generations such as James Thurber and Robert Benchley. When he hits you with his humor, it's as if he's giving you a punch, but with a velvet glove. My favorite chapter happens to be his discourse on how to open a milk carton. Anybody who can make this funny deserves a rating of 10

Unless you operate a business out of your home, or own the building from which your shingle dangles, you need to lease commercial space. For the typical owner, this process can be daunting--and cluttered with costly, potential pitfalls.

5 out of 5 stars Combines legal information and business basics on leasing........2003-08-11

One may not expect a legal guide to have business related information on the topic being discussed. Nolo guides are typically an exception to that rule just like this one. There is a lot of information that you will need to put together and decisions to be made before you even get to the point of signing a lease agreement and this book address those concerns on top of the legal aspects to signing leases and neatly ties the two.

For that purpose, the book is divided into two parts - the first part deals with how to prepare for leasing space (evaluating your needs, finding the space, evaluating the space, understanding true costs, coming up with a negotiating strategy, etc.) and the second part deals with the common lease terms (lease basics, length of the lease, security deposits, insurance clauses, breaking the lease, etc.).

My favorite chapter is Chapter 14: Option to Renew or Sublet and Other Flexibility Clause. In this economy, I didn't want to just sign any lease without knowing what my options are if I am forced to sublet. In the personal situation with renting apartments, in the past I had neglected to check these clauses and ended up suffering when I had financial problems and couldn't sublet! This time around I am carefully researching this before signing a long term contract. So I was happy to see this section and learned a lot about Rights of First Refusal and First Offer (I had heard about these things before reading this book but didn't exactly know the implications) among other related topics.

We are currently using this book to lease office space for the first time and finding that this book is saving us a lot of time. And I feel that it is reducing risk in the long term. I am glad I am not depending on 'standard' lease contracts to take care of my needs and instead identifying what my needs are and making sure that the lease agreement addresses those issues. Considering how much research I have been able to do with this book's help, I am confident that this is really going to pay off in the long run. I do plan on working with my lawyer before signing the final contract but it is so helpful to do all the up front work on my own so there is no middle person involved. Even if there are middle people involved, I believe it is going to make the communication smoother as I don't have to depend on them to keep my best interests in mind (as we can guess, they probably won't or may be too involved with their own best interests).

Before Nolo guides, there wasn't much out there to help you understand the law. These books explain the law in plain English. They do a fantastic job too! Lawyers should always be consulted to assist you with legal situations but it is good to have this information ahead of time so communication is smoother and the legal costs lesser. I hope you benefit from this book as much as we have. Good luck!

1 out of 5 stars Had a high interest until I read this book.......2002-10-11

I run my own shop and wanted to open a new space across town, but rather than rely on a landlord to just give me good terms, I thought I'd do some research first.

I started with this book, which promises to show you how to negotiate all the terms, etc. But by the time I'd read the first chapter, my head was nodding and an hour had gone by. I didn't retain any information because it was so dry.

I'm sure there's some sort of information to be gleened from it, but you'd have to be a patient reader, not a busy businesswoman like me. I recommend "The Commercial Lease Guidebook."

In the darkest days of the Vietnam War, the U.S. Navy's kill ratio had fallen to 2:1 -- a deadly decline in pilot combat effectiveness. To improve the odds, a corps of hardened fighter pilots founded the Fighter Weapons School, a.k.a. TOP GUN. Utilizing actual enemy fighter planes in brutally realistic dogfights, the Top Gun instructors dueled their students and each other to achieve a lethal new level of fighting expertise. The training paid off. Combining the latest weaponry and technology, mental endurance, and razor-sharp instincts, the Top Gunners drove the Navy's kill ratio up to an astounding 12:1, dominating the skies over Vietnam.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent narrative history for the non-aviator history buff.......2006-04-24

Really a fun book - it is aimed at the general reader and is thus not academically oriented, but its factual information does have academic value. I read the original edition about 7 or 8 years ago, but just recently reread much of it for some research on the F-4 Phantom II. Low on technical data, instead the author gives the history of the human interactions that spawned the Top Gun Fighter Weapons School (which they made a really bad Tom Cruise movie about, but with F-14s). Much of it is told by the Navy officers who were there, and Wilcox brings it all together to explain what was wrong with the Naval air war in Vietnam and how the Navy fixed it.

4 out of 5 stars The Big If.......2004-07-31

This book makes it sound like until the creation of the Flight School as seen in the movie, TOP GUN, that Navy pilots weren't very good at all. This is far from the truth. There have always been outstanding pilots in the Navy, and now there is a cookie cutter system that claims that it can make aces out of any greenhorn who enlists. I'd recommend SCREAM OF EAGLES for its multiple stories of bravery and courage in a difficult time for the USA, but it's a little over the top when it comes to how great the school is.

There's a big IF attached to the story, and to sum it up in words even a NCO could understand, if the pilots of the US Navy were so awful during the VietNam conflict, why were they given the preponderance of medals issued for extraordinary service? That's a mighty big if, if you ask this flight fan.

You might well rent the film TOP GUN to go along with this, experience the hype from all angles.

5 out of 5 stars Wilcox book is a Screaming success!.......2000-03-15

For everyone who thinks they know what it takes to be a top gun pilot based on the film, Top Gun, run, don't walk to the store and get Bob Wilcox's "Scream of Eagles." Here's the real story of the creation of Top Gun during the Vietnam war and it's a hell of a good story as told by Wilcox. He really puts you in the cockpit with the best of the best. They should make this into a movie!

5 out of 5 stars This is gaining popularity on the Internet.......1998-05-06

This book is becoming a buzzword in flight simulator forums around the Internet. Anyone who's 'flown' a flight simultor on their home computers should read this book. It'll really change the way you view PC 'flying'. I also recommend Wilcox's other book, "Wings of Fury", which is a collection of tales from Navy and Air Force pilots from Viet Nam to Tripoli to Desert Storm. "Scream of Eagles" is a must-read for aviation enthusiasts and Viet Nam historians, and a very good read for everyone else.

5 out of 5 stars I recommend this book to any military aviation enthusiast.......1997-11-05

SCREAM OF EAGLES is a book that tells about the Navy's air war in Vietnam- the terrible losses of expensive aircraft to a peasent's air force, and the triumphant victory after the creation of the Navy's Fighter Weapon School (Top Gun).

This book has accounts from such Navy pilots as Randy Cunningham and others, as well as detailed analysis of dogfights in Vietnam and in the Top Gun school. It's obvious that Robert Wilcox knows his stuff about Naval Aviation.
