A history lover...........2003-05-02
This book has all sorts of information I had not see before - for example the important African-American entrepreneur in old San Francisco, Leidersdorf, is buried at Mission Dolores in San Francisco. This book has very helpful background information for students for each mission. The model section has layouts for all of the missions and ideas for making a model which come from actual models created by a parent, using styrofoam.

The book was poorly written. The model building idea was half-baked. The book is a dissappointment.

Book Description
Information is a key factor in business today, and data warehousing has become a major activity in the development and management of information systems to support the proper flow of information. Unfortunately, the majority of information systems are based on structured information stored in organizational databases, which means that the company is isolated from the business environment by concentrating on their internal data sources only. It is therefore vital that organizations take advantage of external business information, which can be retrieved from Internet services and mechanically organized within the existing information structures. Such a continuously extending integrated collection of documents and data could facilitate decision-making processes in the organization.
Filtering the Web to Feed Data Warehouses discusses areas such as:
- how to use data warehouse for filtering Web content
- how to retrieve relevant information from diverse sources on the Web
- how to handle the time aspect
- how to mechanically establish links among data warehouse structures and documents filtered from external sources
- how to use collected information to increase corporate knowledge
and gives a comprehensive example, illustrating the idea of supplying data warehouses with relevant information filtered from the Web.

Book Description
Dysfunctional is about two individuals becoming brothers through a marriage joining two separate families. The story is based on true life experiences and wrong choices. As you will see, wrong choices for wrong reasons will cause havoc and confusion in relationships. This publication is non-fictional and is in recognition of the AuthorÂ's brother. It is for adult reading. Hopefully, these passages will provide food for thought to those who are preparing to engage in marriage, tackle lifeÂ's legal issues and finally, death. Make certain, all the while, to protect what you have worked for.
Book Description
"HANNIBAL: One Man Against Rome " is the breathtaking adventure of the great Carthaginian general who shook the foundations of Rome. Eluding several Roman legions sent out to intercept him in Spain and France, Hannibal astoundingly leads his small army of mercenaries over the Alps and thunders down into the Po Valley in 218 B.C. This violent and exciting narrative will thrill you with the accounts of heroism and brilliance displayed on both sides as the war rages mercilessly across the entire Western Mediterranean. Learn how the patience of Fabius Maximus and the genius of Lucius Cornelius Scipio finally turn the tide in this, the world's first "global" conflict.
Hannibal Barca (ca. 248 B.C - ca. 183 B.C.) is widely considered the greatest military commander of all time. He grew to manhood in Spain under the careful tutelage of his aristocrat father, the Carthaginian, Hamilcar. Upon the death of his brother-in-law, Hasdrubal, in 231, he became commander of the forces there and, backed by the Carthaginian government, subdued Spain south of the Ebro. At the end of the Second Punic War and his defeat at Zama, Hannibal settled down in Carthage to restore its broken fortunes. He succeeded so well that he raised the ire of the Romans and was pursued relentlessly to the East. Rather than fall into Roman hands, he committed suicide at Libyssa on the shore of the Sea of Marmora.

Reads like a text book........2006-01-31
This review may not be entirely fair, as the first 40 pages of the book were so dry I could not finish it. It was like reading a text book. Based on the other review on this site, I tried to push on, but just couldn't spend the time reading something that I wasn't enjoying. The map at the beginning of the text didn't even include the places being mentioned in the history described in these first 40 pages. I was so looking forward to reading a historical account, but was expecting more of a story, and less of a text book.
If you are looking for a straightforward factual account, this may be the book for you. I, however, was disappointed.
superb, excepting the analysis at the end.......2003-07-11
This is the first biography I've read of Hannibal, but it probably won't be the last. I very much enjoyed the book, especially after Alps. The beginning is a bit slow and tedious, but it necessary to understand the more interesting part in the middle. Taking the elephants over the alps was really the least of Hannibal's many achievements, and Lamb makes this clear. He discusses a number of persistent myths and probable myths, including the idea that Carthage intentionally left Hannibal unaided out of political jealousy on the part of it's council. From Lamb's account, it seems likely that Carthage did all she could, but the city was mercantile in nature and had very little military aid to give. Hannibal probably succeeded in giving her another 40 years of peace before the inevitable jealous annihilation by Rome.
Lamb also spends a fair amount of text on the curious parallels between Skipio Africanus (not to be confused with the Skipio who eventually sacked Carthage; that was an adopted grandson) and Hannibal. Lamb traces Skipio's rise to power, his work in putting Rome back on her feet to face Hannibal, his conquest of Africa, and his eventually disillusionment with Rome and self-imposed exile. He died in the same year as his old enemy.
In addition to being a great story, the audible recording is exceptionally clear and easy to understand in a tape adaptor.
The book was thoughtful and well-written. The reason I give it four stars rather than five is that Lamb's analysis at the end leaves something to be desired. He tries to make the point that Hannibal was the greatest proven general who ever lived. He says that the only other general worth comparing him to is Alexander because both Hannibal and Alexander maintained an army on a hostile continent for decades. This is quite true, and I agree with some of Lamb's points. However, I have read enough history on Alexander to say with confidence that Lamb ignores a few glaring facts. The two were in very different situations. Alexander was trying to consolidate an empire. He was trying to conduct his campaign in such a way as to endear himself to mutually hostile Greeks and Persians, as well as a host of other peoples. This balancing act was quite different from Hannibal's war of nerves with Rome. Lamb, however, seeks to make a comparison between the two after barely acknowledging the enormous differences between their goals and situations. This was unprofessional. I see no reason to have to manipulate the truth about Alexander in order to make him look bad so that Hannibal can look good. Hannibal comes off well enough as it is. However, when Lamb is not analyzing, I really enjoyed his book.

Hannibal One Man Against Rome
Manufacturer: Doubleday & Company, Inc.
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Hardcover
ASIN: B000HX8B56 |
Book Description
This book explains why the British Army fought the way it did in the First World War. It integrates social and military history and the impact of ideas to tell the story of how the army, especially the senior officers, adapted to the new technological warfare and asks: was the style of warfare on the Western Front inevitable?
Using an extensive range of unpublished diaries, letters, memoirs and Cabinet and War Office files, Professor Travers explains how and why the ideas, tactics and strategies emerged. He emphasizes the influence of pre-war social and military attitudes, and examines the early life and career of Sir Douglas Haig. The author's analysis of the preparations for the Battles of the Somme and Passchendaele provide new interpretations of the role of Haig and his GHQ, and he explains the reasons for the unexpected British Withdrawal in March 1918. An appendix supplies short biographies of senior British officers. In general, historians of the First World war are in two hostile camps: those who see the futility of lions led by donkeys on the one hand and on the other the apologists for Haig and the conduct of the war. Professor Traver's immensely readable book provides a bridge between the two.
Customer Reviews:
The Killing Ground: WWI as Intellectual History.......2000-05-22
Tim Travers attempts to explain why the British Army in the First World War suffered such horrendous casualties. Travers is unusual in his use of social and intellectual tools to explain a military phenomenon. For anyone who dislikes simple operational military history, this is for you. Travers essentially argues that the intellectual and social environment of the British army before 1914 made the switch from the 19th century model of warfare most of the commanders knew to the 20th century actuality of the western front dificult. Sir Douglas Haig and others simply could not accept that the fighting spirit of their soldiers was no longer the dominant force on the battlefield. The emergence of a technological battlefield, where machine-like weapons made operations difficult, did not fit the paradigm that the Generals learned, and they neither thought out the change, nor had any desire to change. The British Army HQ comes off rather poorly and the Germans come out well, because they adapted sooner to changing conditions. Although his idea is good and his argument solid, at times the book becomes slow and the parade of names confusing. Travers' book is definitely not for the first time student of the Western Front; familarity with the basic narrative is necessary to get the full effect from the book.

Book Description
This is a construction manual intended for both budding novices and experienced bird breeders alike. Comprehensively written and professionally illustrated, the book is loaded with construction details, diagrams and pictures, material lists, insulating and finishing techniques and tips, environmental concerns, simple step by step instructions and, essentially, everything you need to know about building everything you need for your birds.
Every plan and construction detail is compiled from years of hands on experience by the author in the raising and breeding of birds ranging from finches, canaries and larger softbills to most of the hardbills including (but not limited to) parakeets, budgies, and cockatiels, on up to amazons, cockatoos, macaws, and so on. There are projects ranging from simple houses, cages, breeding and nesting quarters to small, medium, large and grand scale aviaries, all designed and detailed with both the beginning hobbyist and serious fancier, alike, in mind.
Because many of the aviary designs are based on modular construction, they contain the flexibility to start small and expand or start big and go even bigger. The material & costs have been considered carefully, and the information contained in the book will allow anyone to calculate exactly what is needed before starting actual construction. This makes it possible for the builder to contact material suppliers in his/her local area, obtain prices, and, if necessary, scale back the design to meet the current budget (and make plans to expand in the future). The designs require inexpensive, non-specialized, easy to obtain materials assembled in a straight-forward manner with the minimum tools, and give you strong, durable housing that you can be tailor-made for a specific breed of bird or modified as needed. Included also are construction plans for feeders, waterers, nesting humidifiers, hospital quarters, shipping and carrying cages, electrical wiring, plumbing and ventilation plans for the aviary, plus a host of other ideas, construction tips and general information seldom found in other bird publications.
Copyrighted and published by the author in 1973, the book has sold over 20,000 copies worldwide through the years. Although the materials were reviewed and updated in 1996 to ensure up-to-date information, the content has remained the same. While the book was written for aviculturists, permission was granted in 1990 to an instructor at University of California Berkeley to use excerpts from the book in a class on general construction.
Customer Reviews:
Practical, easy and brilliant!.......2005-06-28
I waited a long time to get this book and it was worth every moment. The designs are well thought out and easy for even the mechanically challenged to understand. The author has devised an aviary/cage system that can be increased or decreased at will, by adding or subtracting carefully yet simply designed panels. Each panel fulfills a particular function of the whole to form the basic unit and you can add unlimited units to form your ideal facility. This information is timeless and I am very pleased.
Good plans for modular building.......2005-02-01
This book lays out a good set of plans for starting small and working your way up to as large a breeding operation as you like. I am adept at building small animal pens, and I've been doing so for several decades, on a hobby basis. I was still impressed with the simple brilliance of this book.
Not for the average suburban hobbyist.......2003-08-07
Potential purchasers of this booklet should be aware that the author is very serious about his birds. What he considers a "quite small" aviary, "for the aviculturist who has only restricted land area for his hobby", measures 11 by 16 feet. A "fairly large" one is 38 by 24 feet, complete with concrete foundation, plumbing, heating, electric lights, and 12 foot ceilings.
If, like me, you are looking for ideas for a small backyard aviary for a few canaries, you should look elsewhere. This publication contains plans for only 6 aviaries. Four are far too large for the average suburban lot, unless you are willing to knock down your house first, and the other two are so rudimentary that plans are hardly necessary.
Exceptional plans, better than what I expected........2003-02-22
I needed a means by which to build aviaries for my birds. I have built one out of the book, and it is great. I'm most impressed with the bird "hospital" cage.. It works exactly as described. My first impression when I received the book was not that great. The drawings were clear, directions clear, but I guess on some level I expected something more than what looked like a college study packet from Kinko's. The designs in this book and the subsequent modifications I've made to them to fit my needs have been outstanding. One needs only a modicum of building expertise, a knucklehead can put the designes together. Highly recommended... again, this is coming from someone who has actually built items off the plans in the book. It's not a glitzy book, but doggon functional.
Back to Basics or Simplicity Plus for the birds........2002-11-15
Considering the first printing was in 1973, revised in 1996, and its now 2002, this book still holds firm for the basic needs of birds. From the housing needs to the transportation needs. It is as complete as a book can be without being overwhelming for the beginner hobbyist. One aviary near me was built from this book. It covers all the birds needs from spring to winter. Its well constructed and easy access to clean. The other needs of the birds are also covered so you get the complete program in one book. Size and style changes for different birds is covered.
After reading the editorial reviews, the author was based in N America and the metric system was not used much in the 1970's, so I appreciate the simple measurement charts and layouts for building what is needed. I have one book to keep, one to share, and one to mark my progress in. Thank you Don LaRosa for such a great job of writing a Simplicity Plus Book !!
