Great Book, but Dang! Where's the rest of it?.......2004-02-24

Without a doubt, this has got to be one of the best, if not the best book on Arts and Crafts Tile I've seen, and I've got them all. Although dealing with California tile makers only, there's enough material here to fill two books - and in fact, that's what they did! I didn't realize that this is really Vol. I of II, the other covers the rest of the H's down to the Z's. And that's my only gripe - $82 if one buys both, AND now I have to wait 4-5 weeks for the 2nd part. But as a reference to companies and what they made, this book is outstanding. Can hardly wait - Note, the cost of this book has gone up from $41 to the present $59.59 - So, I'd suggest buying the second vol now, before that goes up also. Note II there are two DIFFERENT Books the first covers Tiles from A to half way through the H's, the Second volume covers the rest of the H's down to the Z's. Even though they have different ISBN's Amazon seems to be getting them mixed up, calling the first the "Hardcover" the second book the "updated" book. There are two books, get them both! The 2nd book just as good as the first! 2006 update - these two books remain about the best for CALIFORNIA tiles, but The Encyclopedia of American Art Tiles (by Norman Karlson) Vols. 3 and 4 are just as good. However Norman's books (as great as they are) are a bit pricey - You just want California tiles? Then stick with the California Tile books (one and two) But want to have the best reference for ALL the U.S.? Then go with Karlson, but you will easily spend $200-$240 to get all four vols. If you go with Karlson, then you don't need this California book.

Fabulous pix, authoritative text, original documentary -- A Must-Have sleeper!.......2006-08-26

This tiny (5" x 7") bookie packs more into its 174 pages of 7 chapters plus 3 back matter sections PLUS comprehensive indexes than you would likely imagine. Not only are the images -- monochrome, repro hand-tinted where appropriate, and full color where posters and equipment is concerned -- uniformly stunning, but the tersely authoritative text is supplemented with 8 invaluable original "documents" with titles as far-ranging as: "Lumiere Remembers"; "A World of Ideas"; "Tricks of the Trade"; and pieces on war, erotic, and advertising flicks. Plus, of course, the one on the first woman Filmmaker. Sounds like a gotta-have? It IS!

Early masters of the motion picture.......2000-05-22

Illuminating and informative book about the birth of the motion picture. Written by a Frenchman it concentrates on the development of the motion picture in France but other countries are not ignored. This is an interesting and original account of the founding fathers of the motion picture(and founding mothers too, a section is devoted to the worlds first woman filmaker Alice Guy, whos first film was The Cabbage Fairy.) Beautiful colored photographs and an engaging,lively text make this a must have novel for film and history buffs.

Since the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity (HTS), research laboratories around the world have pushed the temperature limits steadily upward, opening the way to commercial applications with potentially revolutionary impacts. The scientific race is becoming a commercial race, one featuring U.S. and Japanese companies, and one that the United States could lose. Indeed, American firms may already be falling behind in commercializing the technology of superconductivity.

Japanese companies have been more aggressive in examining possible applications of HTS, and what it might mean for competitive strategy. While payoffs on R&D may lie a decade or more in the future, managers in Japan have been willing to take the risks. Although a number of U.S. companies have also begun major efforts in HTS, most American managers, under pressure to show short-term profits, have been more inclined to wait and see.

So far, the US. Government has supported the development of HTS in its traditional way-by putting money into R&D, mostly through the mission agencies. Federal agencies moved quickly to channel money to HTS when news of the discoveries broke. The breadth and depth of the response in government agencies and Federal laboratories, and in the university system, shows the continuing vitality of the scientific enterprise in the United States. Although Federal dollars will help support a technology base that the private sector can build upon, the U.S. Government is not providing direct support for commercialization. Nor have we any policy or tradition for this kind of support-unlike countries such as Japan.

Although I had to wait several months to receive this book, it was well-worth it. It is an all-encompassing guide to getting things right the first time, especially for those salespeople who do not have a strong broker they can turn to in times of need. I will be purchasing one for every new agent in my office as a supplement to the training I provide. One thing that is important to note: one must keep an eye on Dearborn's website for critical updates to the book. Realtors, Appraisers, Bankers: get yours today!!

Most of those units were created during the war and served only for the duration of the conflict. After going overseas and fighting to achieve victory, most of the World War II divisions were disbanded and faded into obscurity. A worthy addition.......2007-05-08

In the history of the armor divisions from World War 2, it is the higher numbered divisions (11th, 12th, 14th, etc) that always are given less than their proper credit. This book goes a large way in righting that wrong. Using pictures, maps & personal accounts Mr Ferguson tell sthe story of the 12th Armored Division in a readable manner.

Not bad praise from the enemy. That statement typifies the action of the 12th Armored Division. Starting in early December 1944, the green Division made inroads into the Alsace countryside, crossing the Maginot Line and were proceeding toward the Rhine River. The troops were quickly learning the art of warfare, the tenacity of the enemy, and were exposed to the worst winter weather in the past fifty years.

The Division was bloodied at Herrlisheim, losing many tanks, tankers, armored infantrymen, combat engineers, and others. The Division was badly damaged (equipment and personnel), but the enemy sustained heavy losses and were stopped far short of their objectives. Strasbourg and Hagenau were spared recapture by the Germans and they only gained a few miles that were recovered in the following few weeks.

This second volume of personal memoir continues the thread begun in Hellcat Historian--stories from those who were there supplemented with research to put these young men s heroic actions into historical context.

Fine for the beginner, but not the expert........2007-07-04

I have been a long time user of the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America. When I heard they were beginning to produce state or small area specific mini-guides, I welcomed the reduction in mass and volume for my back pack. However, the new California field guide fell short of my expectations. Less than 200 of the 600+ species observed in California were illustrated in this guide. As such, it holds little appeal to me as a true field guide. However, my volume has been passed to friends that enjoy feeding birds in their yard, but are rarely sure of the ID of their visitors. They have told me how much they enjoy the book and how useful they find it. This would appear to be the niche that this new set of guides will fill. It will whet the interest of new birders and feeders of birds. From there, hopefully they will find they enjoy the hobby enough to pursue it more completely. At that point, they will need more than this book can offer.

National Geographic Field Guide to Birds: California.......2007-05-23

We are really enjoying this book. We have recently moved to a new home and have placed many bird feeders in our yard. We can now identify most of the birds that are dining at our outdoor restaurant, which is providing much entertainment.
