I just returned from Glasgow and this delightful book - brand new - is being sold for 10 pounds in all the gift shops, at the Mackintosh House and at the Glasgow School of Art. Why are used copies being sold for so much on Amazon?

I ordered this book and received a tiny, 32 page, gift book instead. When I contacted the seller they asked that I return the gift book. 1) I returned the book, was reimbursed for the original order, but was never reminbursed for the postage to return the book. 2) This seller continues to advertise a book they evidently do not have to sell. This is bait and switch. 3) In response to my Amazon A-Z Claim I receive a form email stating I have been reimbursed and my claim is closed. Amazon has just lost a very good customer.

Glasgow is as far North as Moscow. In the time of Charles Rennie Mackintosh it was a tough, smokey, industrial city still living in the shadow of centuries of Scottish Puritanism. Not exactly the most promising environment you would think for an artistic movement that created the works of exquisite beauty presented in this book.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh, with a tight-knit group of fellow artists known as the Glasgow School, ensured that Glasgow at the turn of the century was an integral part of the international Art Nouveau movement, that was also flourishing in Paris and Vienna. The Art Nouveau movement is now seen as a major watershed in global culture because it was the first major art movement that drew inspiration equally from East and West.

As art evolved away from representative art, spiritual aspects came more into play. As with the Secessionist in Vienna, the German Expressionist, and the French Symbolists, mystical ideas became increasingly prominent, turning much of this art into a kind of ouija-board farce. The ghostly and heavily-symbolic works of the other members of the Glasgow School earned them the nickname of the "Spook School" and saw them marginalized.

But while much of the painting of the time reflects the faux spirituality of misunderstood oriental mysticism and sham seances, Mackintosh's work was distinguished by his deep, instinctive understanding of Oriental aesthetics, expressed unpretentiously in beautiful lines. This gave him the Midas touch at whatever he turned his hand to.

In his painting, posters, stained glass windows, furniture, and architecture, we can see the masterly interplay of straight and curved lines. Although John McKean's rather pedantic text in the book doesn't really emphasise this point enough, what we in fact experience in the stimulating tension between Mackintosh's straight and curved lines, is no less than a fusion of yin and yang, the 'female' and 'male' components of the Universe.

Fighting an uphill struggle in a city that didnÕt really understand his unique aesthetic, Mackintosh still managed to do an impressive amount of work as Colin Baxter's excellent pictures reveal. The greatest fulfillment of his art is in 3-D work, especially his furniture designs, which are notoriously difficult to photograph well, although here Baxter does a good job.

It was with furniture, especially in his many chair designs, that he most fulfilled his aesthetic. While most furniture designers of the period gave into the yin or the 'feminine,' with over-elaborate curves and rich decoration, creating a heavy effect, Mackintosh played these 'feminine' aspects off against the yang or 'masculine' by emphasizing simplicity and straightness, creating an uplifting tension that was not only beautiful in itself but also interacted with the curvature of the human form.

While much of Art Nouveau art and design is forever anchored in the historical period that created it, the work of Mackintosh continues to float with us into the future.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful appraisal of Mackintosh's kaleidoscopic talents.......2001-01-16

In Charles Rinnie Macintosh: Architect, Artist, Icon, John McKean and Colin Baxter collaborate to showcase Charles Mackintosh's kaleidoscopic talents as an architect, painter, furniture designer, and graphic artist. They provide an insightful appraisal of Mackintosh's unique talents and offer an informative overview of both the man and his achievements within the context of his personal life and times -- and how his work is viewed today. Enhanced with often stunningly beautiful photographs, Charles Rinnie Macintosh is an outstanding contribution to personal and academic artbook reference and art history collections.

3 out of 5 stars Drawing Power VOLUME ONE: THE SPLASH PAGE.......2001-10-05

I was a little bit disappointed when I got this in the mail from Amazon. I did not realize it was one in a series of books, and this one being about the splash page.

Once I got over that disappointment I was able to enjoy the book. Inside is many drawings both of rough pencil sketches to finished inked drawings. It is good to see the process a good artist takes in drawing comics.

I was somewhat disappointed that he did not go into detail about drawing the figure, but at least their is a small section about it. I like the way he writes, real easy to read with good advice. "...it is important to remember that all muscles attach to bone. Every muscle must worm it's way over and under other muscles to find it's anchor, the bone.

He also goes touches a little bit about composition, perspective, shading, etc. This book will go well as a supplement to more detailed books, like a figure drawing book.

I will have to say I like the book, even though it has a few blank pages in the back. Page 52, 53, 56, 57, 60, 61 are all blank. Is this an artistic thing or a fluke?...

    Book Description

In this distinguished work, which Hilton Kramer in The New York Times Book Review called "surely the best book ever written on the subject," Barbara Novak illuminates what is essentially American about American art. She highlights not only those aspects that appear indigenously in our art works, but also those features that consistently reappear over time. Novak examines the paintings of Washington Allston, Thomas Cole, Asher B. Durand, Fitz H. Lane, William Sidney Mount, Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, and Albert Pinkham Ryder. She draws provocative and original conclusions about the role in American art of spiritualism and mathematics, conceptualism and the object, and Transcendentalism and the fact. She analyzes not only the paintings but nineteenth-century aesthetics as well, achieving a unique synthesis of art and literature. Now available with a new preface and an updated bibliography, this lavishly illustrated volume--featuring more than one hundred black-and-white illustrations and sixteen full-color plates--remains one of the seminal works in American art history.

Despite its title, Year 2000 Problem: Strategies and Solutions from the Fortune 100 is not a collection of corporate case studies. Rather, it is a varied collection of essays, from over 30 contributors, focusing on a wide range of year 2000 issues.

Most of the material is intended for non-technical readers. The book's topics include project management, cost estimation, raising the awareness of year 2000 issues within a corporation, and even the legal ramifications of year 2000 bugs. While a minority of these essays sound a predictable drumbeat of doom, most cover interesting and even offbeat topics--everything from why silver bullets won't work to the issues of employee compensation and retention in a market full of lucrative consulting opportunities.

Some contributions will be of interest to technical managers. Examples include a discussion of programming alternatives to full date-field expansion, a look at the particular problems of database environments, an essay on testing issues, and an essay on the risk that year 2000-compliant systems may become contaminated by non-compliant external data.

The essay format means that you'll have to wade through some information more than once. The advantage is that you'll get a far more multifaceted look at the issues and better drill-down on specific problems than any single author could have provided. People involved in serious year 2000 projects will probably want to get as many perspectives as they can. Although some parts of this book are on the lightweight side, Year 2000 Problem: Strategies and Solutions from the Fortune 100 contains more than enough in-depth information to make it worth your time.

                    Book Description

If you want to find out how Fortune 100 companies are solving the Year 2000 problem and apply their methods in your own enterprise, business or organization, a new book from International Thomson Computer Press is what you need. Year 2000 Problem: Strategies and Solutions from the Fortune 100, by Leon Kappelman and members of the Society for Information Management (SIM) Year 2000 Working Group, has been called "a gold mine of solid, practical strategies for solving your specific year 2000 problem" by Bob Thomas, publisher of the Year/2000 Journal.

A consortium of 52 authors with 10 editorial assistants have contributed to the development of the book, directing all royalties toward non-profit use. Among the Year 2000 strategies described in detail are tactics instituted at the Chubb Group, Chase Manhattan Bank, Union Pacific, and IBM. These case studies clarify problems of estimation, cost, scheduling, testing, risk management, and liability, among other critical elements of the process.

With its eminently practical approach, Year 2000 Problem: Strategies and Solutions from the Fortune 100 is the most informed, focused, and ready-to-use guide yet to appear on the problem. An accompanying CD-ROM includes a vendor risk assessment strategy, a business risk assessment database, a project management database tool, PC test software, and a file conversion utility.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Prep Book.......2007-06-28

I bought this book and it was the only book I used to prep for my real estate broker's exam. I took the exam on June 20, 2007 and passed (it was my first try).

There are 15 chapters in this book and at the end of each chapter, there is a practice quiz you can take to test your knowledge on what the chapter just covered. Each quiz contains anywhere from 45-150 questions, but most quizes have over 100 questions. The book also contains 3 practice exams (150 questions each) at the very end to test you on all the topics covered in the book.

I went through all the M/C questions in this book twice (3 times for the more difficult chapters). The night before my exam, I actually had a last-minute panic that the practice questions in the book would be different from the actual exam. I shouldn't have worried. The questions turned out to be very representative of the actual exam. I didn't see more than 2 or 3 questions in the exam that dealt with a topic or situation that I didn't come across in the book. In fact, on many questions, I actually knew what the answer should be before I even finished reading the question since I had already answered many similar questions in the prep book!

I am not affiliated with the author in any way. In fact, this is my first book review, ever. I felt compelled to write this review and share my experience with others as I recall how anxious I was about the quality of this book when I purchased it.

I just passed the California Brokers Examination on my first try. I am an attorney and have no real estate background and I do not have a real estate sales license. (In fact I hated Real Property in law school and avoid practicing in this area.) I read a few primer books including this one to see what would be on the exam. I read this Barron's book all the way through and answered all of the test questions. I the took the Real Estate Trainers Course in Santa Ana, on the advise of a girlfriend who is a broker and who took their course. They offer a crash courses in LA, Orange County and in Northern Cal. I took the course, read the big book they give you; did all of the exam questions (Over 1500); attended the crash course seminar twice and took the test. The courses and practice exams Real Estate Trainers gave, made the test easy.

When I took the Real Estate Trainer's Course I realized that this Barrons book is only good to lay out the general areas that are on the actual test. However, you can not use this book alone to the pass the test. The questions in this book are too easy and don't reflect how hard the questions actually are. You can use it for general information purposes only but some of the areas in the Barron's book overemphasis areas that the actual test spends little or no time on.

In that the pass rate for the exam is between 30 and 38%, I would prepare the best you can. Save your money and find this book in the local library and check it out. (Many libraries have it.) Read and take a brokers exam course.

1 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy This Book.......2006-03-17

Like the previous reviewer I studied this book in detail, took all the exams which totaled over 1000 questions, scoring over 90% on each exam and still flunked the Broker's Exam. This after having passed the State Bar exam for attorneys on the first try. This book did not cover even 10% of what was on the exam. I emailed the authors and they never responded. This book is a complete piece of garbage. You cannot count on it for anything.

2 out of 5 stars Basic Fundamentals, but not sufficient exam prep .......2006-02-14

The questions in the theoretical exams do not reflect what you will find on the actual test. If you use this book alone to prepare, there is a good chance you will fail the exam. In general, the questions will help you to grasp some fundamentals, but you will need to go over some more realistic test questions to prepare.

1 out of 5 stars Not for the exam.......2005-12-20

I studied this book for my first broker's exam on December 14, 2005 at the Pasadena Center and failed. I solved and reviewed twice all the chapter problems and all of the exam sets in the book. I was very confident that I could answer correctly on all the questions in the book. But the questions on the actual exam were nothing like the ones in the book. The questions on the actual exam were much longer and harder. They required much deeper knowledge than what the book presented. It was like the authors never have seen the actual exam. This is a real estate knowledge book, not an exam prep book. I have wasted my time and money because of this book. What could an exam prep book do worse if a book not only does not help, but also misleads about the actual exam? Please do not buy this book to study for the exam. This is a shame on the famous name 'Barron's'. Do not be a victim like me. Hope my and my family's suffer would do some good by letting other people know not to buy this book.

I found this book to be extremely helpful; I first read it when my child was two, and have referred to it often in the ensuing preschool years. Some friends of ours recently had a baby, and the mother-to-be pulled me aside and said,'your daughter is so well-behaved, and you seem to say all the right things to her, and handle misbehaviour so well. I want to know your secrets!" I was flattered, and gave her a copy of this book.

I found this book to be a great deal of help in trying to raise my son. It gives a better understanding of why children act like do, and lets you know if you are expecting too much from your child. It puts you in their shoes to help realize what we expect from them is sometimes too much.

                      Book Description

Strategic plans invariably differ from the reality of war. The American experience in the Second World War was no exception. This volume offers an understanding of the gap between American plans and what actually happened. A variety of factors including coalition politics, inter-service disputes, disagreements between field commanders and Washington headquarters, logistical constraints, and the initiatives and reactions of the enemy combined in myriad forms to produce a conflict that was very different from original strategic expectations.

                        Book Description

Less than a century after the only parrot exclusively native to the United States became extinct, another parrot has become established in North America. Unlike cavity-breeding non-native species, the Monk or Quaker parrot isn't crowding out songbirds, woodpeckers, or scissor-tailed flycatchers. These brave little birds prefer habitat modified for human use in ways most native species cannot survive. Neither do these urban dwellers threaten rural agriculture. In fact, these nest-building parrots may actually be recreating habitat in utility easements that have been rendered uninhabitable to most wildlife.

As cavity-breeding habitat disappears worldwide, will nest-building parrots be allowed to stay in our cities?

P{arrots in the city was both informitive and a really wonderful read. I have always had an interest in Monk parrots and this has certainly been an amazing eye opener. A truely wonderful book for anyone who loves parrots and maybe for those who should learn a little tolarance for this noble little creatures struggle to survive.

5 out of 5 stars Parrots in the City by Jon-Mark Davey - One Bird's Struggle for a Place on the Planet.......2005-08-31

The book tells of the struggle of the Wild Quaker Parakeet to survive in the wild. Part of their problem is they build large colony nests on power grids. The electric company needs to take down the nests so lots of baby birds are lost. But thanks to some wonderful bird loving people like the Davey's and many Bird Clubs in Florida and Illinois and states that allow Quaker Parakeets, the baby birds are put in foster homes to be hand fed, because they cannot be turned loose in the wild again. The book "Parrots in the City" is an easy reading book and it only took me 5 hours to read. It reminded me of "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill" by Mark Bittner, because both stories are doing all they can to give wild parrots a chance to survive in the wild in the United States of America.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a book about wild Quakers as they really are........2004-11-03

I received my copy and I'm impressed.

I heard about this book in its very first stages. I know how much work went into it: the interviews, the research, the refining and editing, to make it the best book it could be.

Parrots in the City is a book that finally addresses the idea of wild Quakers as they are, not as they are rumored to be. In a well-researched, well-thought out, well-documented book that goes into the history of the extinct Carolina Parakeet along side the flourishing wild Quaker (Monk) parrot, the authors confront the situation with thoughtful insight.

It tells a compelling story that should help the plight of wild Quakers, and wild parrots in general, if people just take the time to read it and understand what it has to say.

Quaker lovers should read it. Those who think Quakers are a problem
in the wild should read it, too. Mattie Sue, Jon-Mark and JoAnn Davey can all be very proud of their efforts

5 out of 5 stars Great book for learning about and coexisting with them.......2004-11-03

I am not a bird owner, and my naivety with the subject meant I didn't even know what questions to ask about parrots before I read this book.

I found Parrots in the City to be a well-researched book about Quaker parrots, and was a great insight in to parrots.

This book gives an excellent, concise account of the history of parrots around the world, how they were reintroduced to the USA, and lists some accounts for specific states, as well as state-by-state restrictions. Internet discussion groups and their URLs are mentioned, and can be helpful for someone interested in the subject to link up with active parrot enthusiasts.

Particularly interesting was the urban life of the birds, and how their nest can affect utility power grids. I learned there are alternatives to exterminating birds. There was a section that listed words and phrases commonly used by parrots such as Gimme for food, gotta go to work when humans are dressed up and leaving, etc.

I can recommend it because the book covers how we got to Parrots in the City and most importantly, how to co exist with them.

5 out of 5 stars A necessary and long awaited book!!.......2004-10-26

I was thrilled when I first heard that Mattie Sue Athan, Jon-Mark Davey and Joann Davey were teaming up to write about wild Quakers. Jon-Mark and Joann are long time Quaker watchers and they run the Quakerville.com website. Mattie Sue Athan is a name more familiar to bird lovers, as she has written a series of wonderful books on parrot behavior and training. I could not wait for the book to be published.

I was not disappointed. The book contains a wealth of information - both scientific concepts and personal observations - that explain why Quaker Parrots will never descend in vast flocks to decimate American agriculture.

Some of the more interesting and persuasive sections are the sections explaining the concept of K-select species vs. R-select species and the information on how Quaker colonies fail. The larger ethical issue of how humans treat "inconvenient" wildlife is also examined. Should we exterminate animals that get in our way? What is the most dangerous invasive species? (The answer might surprise you.)

The book is essential reading for parrot lovers, bird lovers, power company workers, farmers and legislators (at local, state and federal levels).
