        Book Description

Lewis Morley is called "The Man Who Shot the Sixties," and this collection of his black-and-white photography shows why. Dudley Moore, Charlotte Rampling, Brian Epstein, Franois Truffaut: the decade is here, in the style that earned Morley a place among the century's most adept chroniclers. A series of nude portraits of actress Christine Keeler, taken at the height of the scandal that brought down British MP John Profumo, is as much history as art. "I always seem to have been in the right place at the right time," says the photographer.

In a career that spanned fashion layouts, advertising, and celebrity portraits, Morley's favorite assignments were for magazines, because of the spontaneity involved. "I like magazine work because it's quick and it's urgent so it relies on an emotional response to a subject, rather than in advertising where everything is minutely planned and you spend more time in meetings than taking photographs," he recalls. His feelings show in street scenes that recall Cartier-Bresson.

5 out of 5 stars Leaders and followers alike will enjoy these gems.......2005-12-06

This collection of six volumes contains the "best" cartoons from several decades of Leadership Journal. Those who have been faithful, or even unfaithful, readers of that journal will enjoy this collection. Others will find themselves equally at home as long as they are able to laugh at themselves and accept a comic rebuke.

While almost always funny many of these cartoons are also prophetic and offer a criticism of contemporary western Christianity and church life. Those who are offended by the idea of using humour to challenge the church should avoid these books.

5 out of 5 stars Complete and In-depth.......2001-08-16

This is not one of those books filled with pep talks and exhortations to overcome stage fright or thinly veiled Toastmaster "how to". It's about the realities of delivering technical presentations as either the speaker or the coordinator of a presentation. To be sure, it does address some of the basics, such as how to clarify your message with an outline, dealing with hostile audiences, and how to create effective visual aids that reinforce your message.

What sets this book apart, though, is the way the author addresses the logistical issues, which can be a coordinator's nightmare. The advice given is born of experience and enduring the last minute pressures of getting on a plane to do an unplanned presentation the next morning. As life would have it, such events depend on luck and demonstration equipment or software functioning perfectly. As Murphy's Law would have it, these events age one rapidly. But the author thoroughly covers all of the issues and factors, including scheduling and logistics and how to coordinate the complexities of preparing the site. He also goes into minute details of site selection and optimum room layout, audience (and speaker) comfort and safety and coordinating multiple speakers. Here is an example of the level of detail the book goes into, showing how well thought out the material is: managing speaking events in multilingual audiences or guest speakers requiring translators.

To a presenter this book is valuable; to an event coordinator or road-warrior presenter this book is a jewel. It covers topics and situations you rarely think of until you've been embarrassed a few times, and is clearly and cleverly written.

4 out of 5 stars Some good, some bad.......2001-08-04

The writer of this book appropriately acknowledges the fact that you cannot learn to present from a book. Like many other things it is a matter of practice makes perfect. So, if you are interested in this book because you are "scared"/unsure etc. of an upcoming presentation, this book will not teach you how to do it. However, this book will make you aware of some of the good and bad practices.

In the preface of the book the author mentions that the growth in computer projection equipment and the accompanying software that enables the creation of the so called "slide shows" may lead to the impression that everything is done by the computer. In this book he effectively shows that that is not the case.

The book commences in Chapters 2 and 3 by stressing the importance of planning your talk. Knowing what you want to say and who the audience will be. It emphasises planning the overall structure of the talk.

Chapters 4 and 5 are appropriately dedicated to the use of visual aids. It stresses the importance of getting the message to the audience. From this perspective it provides sensible useful guidelines for people whose artistic capabilities may not be well developed. Practical aspect of letter sizing and color usage is presented - mistakes in this regard, which I see made in presentations at all levels, are pointed out. These two chapters will probably shed interesting light on certain issues even for reasonably experienced presenters. The only "factor" that I could find that is not addressed in these chapters is the excessive use of animation which certain computer software "impose" on you. Therefore if a section that builds on the statement "Don't use animation unless there is a specific reason why it would aid in getting the message across..." is added, I would be happy that it is the most complete way in which this topic is addressed in one single source.

Chapter 6 specifically deals with "new" presentation technology. It mentions several issues that pertain specifically to computer-based presentations. This is the one chapter were the book could probably be bettered, especially for people wanting to read specifically about these kinds of presentations. To get value from this chapter one probably needs to read the previous chapters as well. As such the book loses a bit of its potential as "reference" material. It is, however, still very much worthwhile if you read the book as a unit.

The rest of the book deals with a variety of issues deals with aspects such as different kinds of room layouts, different kinds of presentations etc. It fails, however, to make a link between how these would change the presentation. If the latter part of the book receives attention and do a bit more than just mention these issues much value can be added. This part of the book is probably responsible for its 4-rating. If I were to evaluate Chapters 1 - 6 and 7 - 11 separately it would probably receive 5 and 3 stars respectively.

The appendices provide some evaluation forms for the different types of meetings, which could save you some experimentation.

In general the book is a good buy for people with no or little experience in making presentations - applying and thinking carefully about some of the suggestions may help you avoid mistakes by raising awareness. However, even experienced presenters could probably get value out of the book by measuring their existing way of doing against chapters 3 - 6.

                  Book Description

This comprehensive presentation of the Request for Proposal (RFP) process shows librarians how to successfully prepare RFPs when determining which vendors to use for purchasing library materials. Contending that the straight bid process, where only costs and discount rates are considered, does not offer the best options for libraries, the authors provide information on every facet of the RFP process--from philosophical and pragmatic reasons for writing an RFP to evaluation of responses and awarding of contracts to transferring titles and evaluation of vendor services and products. All of the material in this book can be transferred to any kind of RFP for any kind of library materials. Special features include chapters on the acquisition of specialized materials (e.g., science, technology, fine arts) and foreign materials, and specific information on electronic/automated services. Appendixes contain samples of the cover letter, questions for various sections and types of RFPs, and evaluation criteria

4 out of 5 stars It damns the dam with precise and powerful arguments........1999-08-29

This is a collection of essays which document the many reasons the Three Gorges Dam should not be built, the lose of arable land, the dislocation of millions of people, the loss of 5,000 years of art and architecture, etc. Author Dai Qing, an outspoken opponent of the dam since the beginning, is to be highy commended for speaking out while others cower in silence. To put it in Western terms, it is David taking on Goliath, times 10.

There are a lot of detailed figures and facts in some of the essays. They're easily skimmed. But read this book if the subject matters to you and particularly if you're planning to take a cruise through the Three Gorges or have already taken it. While on the cruise, one is told only of the glory and power of the dam, which is to say, given the party line, but one should know the lie behind the line and the potential tragedy that awaits, the tragedy of the River Dragon coming again.

                                Book Description

The groundbreaking book puts forward strong arguments which run against the main currents in the prevailing theology of marriage. David McCarthy challenges those accounts which treat the interpersonal aspects of marriage apart from economic and political questions, and proposes that marriage and family flourish when part of an interdependent network of households in community. In so doing, he draws upon anthropogical accounts of community-based reciprocity, sociologies of economy, and theological conceptions of the social body. For McCarthy, the true superiority of sex in marriage is that it doesn't have to mean very much; most sex within marriage is just ordinary, a minor episode in a larger story--it need not point to the full meaning of a sexual relationship. Expressed sexually or otherwise, our 'humanity' is something which here accumulates quietly and through small steps. Throughout the book, day to day life in the neighbourhood is put into conversation with theological enquiry about the love of God and the role of the church in the world. The book therefore has a strong pratical element, and is conceived as a tool for teaching, as part of a college course, in discussion groups, and among theologians interested in matters of marriage and family.

                                Book Description

Even after Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox, the Civil War continued to be fought, and surrenders negotiated, on different fronts. The most notable of these occurred at Bennett Place, near Durham, North Carolina, when Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston surrendered the Army of Tennessee to Union General William T. Sherman. In this first full-length examination of the end of the war in North Carolina, Mark Bradley traces the campaign leading up to Bennett Place.

Alternating between Union and Confederate points of view and drawing on his readings of primary sources, including numerous eyewitness accounts and the final muster rolls of the Army of Tennessee, Bradley depicts the action as it was experienced by the troops and the civilians in their path. He offers new information about the morale of the Army of Tennessee during its final confrontation with Sherman's much larger Union army. And he advances a fresh interpretation of Sherman's and Johnston's roles in the final negotiations for the surrender.

Without doubt Bradley's book does justice to each side all the way from the Generals to local people in
Chapel Hill to Raleigh. It fails to note Bennett Place was in Orange County at the time. Durham county did not exsist
until 1868 when it was carved out of Orange Co. I had a 3 Great-grandfather, CSA Col, who was killed at Bentonville, NC

I have many hand-written letters by John White and his daughters Laura and Delia who discussed Chapel Hill
immediately after the war in 1865.John White eventually became U.S. Postmater in Chapel Hill for three years and later left that job to be Orange County Sheriff twice.
Bradley's book is a wealth of knowledge of events ocurring on the local scene.
Sherman conducted several military trials in Raleigh of civilians and soldiers alike. I have original documents and judgements of the
officer's tribunal. Each were charged with various offenses from plundering to murder.AT least 2 soldiers and 1 civilian were
sentenced to death, only to have Grant void the verdicts with Pres.Andrew Johnson's permission.

5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Read on the Last Days of the Civil War in North Carolina!.......2006-07-25

Mark Bradley has written a most excellent account of the last days of the Civil War in North Carolina between Joseph Johnston and William Sherman. Being a North Carolina native and having visited and traveled through many of the places in the book, I was particularly interested.

The book is not so much a detailed account of the last battles in North Carolina (Bentonville, Averasboro, Wyse Fork, Fort Fisher, etc.) as it is the military and political maneuvering between the two generals - Johnston in attempting to gain favorable surrender terms for his army and Sherman attempting to be lenient with the South at the end of the war. Indeed, aside from the aforementioned battles, most encounters between North and South during the last days in North Carolina were no more than brief skirmishes.

I particulary enjoyed reading the accounts of the Union occupation of Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Hillsborough, and Goldsboro. Having lived in Goldsboro and Raleigh earlier in my life, I enjoyed reading the accounts. Also interesting were the accounts of the Rebel occupation of Greensboro and Charlotte.

Throughout the book, Bradley manages to incorporate several interesting anecdotes: the unfortunate luck of Rebel Lietenant Walsh from Texas, the marriage of Northern General Atkins' courtship and marriage to a Chapel Hill lady, etc.

Bradley's writing style is interesting and maintains a fine balance between being a free-flowing read, just like his excellent Battle of Bentonville title.

                                Read and enjoy! Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Great Companion to "Last Stand in the Carolinas!".......2004-05-04

Mark Bradley has written an excellent companion book to his "Last Stand in the Carolinas," which has currently gone out of print. In this volume, Mr. Bradley picks up where he left off, following Johnston and Sherman from Bentonville to the surrender of the Army of Tennessee at Durham, North Carolina. Bradley's writing is, as in his other book, great!

But missing from "This Astounding Close," are the excellent maps created the very skilled cartographer Mark Moore. The maps provided are not bad--they are actually quite good--but they could have been better. The small numbers of maps left me wanting more, especially ones detailing the smaller skirmishes taking place during the maneuvering in North Carolina. If the maps had been better and mpre plentiful, I would have given the book five starts instead of four.

Being from the South, I have always considered Sherman and his subordinates nothing short of the devil-incarnate. But from this book, I gained a new respect for these men and saw the softer side of them. Bradley depicts how John "Black Jack" Logan saved Raleigh from destruction at the hands of raged Federal troops intent on avenging Abraham Lincoln's assassination. Mr. Bradley also told of how lenient Sherman was toward the surrendering Confederate troops and toward the civilians of North Carolina, especially after the surrender. Sherman even offered Johnston and his troops much kinder terms than those given to Robert E. Lee at Appomattox! But Northern politicians saw these terms as too soft and evetually gave Johnston the same terms given to Lee.

This is a very good book; no doubt a great addition to my rapidly growing Civil War library. Before reading this volume, I knew next to nothing about Johnston's surrender at Durham, North Carolina, in the Bennet Farmhouse. If you are a Civil War buff get this book; if you are a military history buff, get this book! I got it, and am happy I did.

                                5 out of 5 stars Johnston's Last Hurrah!.......2004-03-15

The Civil War didn't officially end with General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox. General Joe Johnston's Army of the South and General Kirby Smith's forces in the Trans-Mississippi still remained in the field.
This is the story of the situation in North Carolina facing Johnston and Union General William Sherman after the Battle of Bentonville. The author presents both sides of the story along with the political pressures from Richmond and Washington.
There is not an abundance of information about Johnston's eventual surrender of the Army of the South and other forces under his command. The author is a leading authority about the 1865 North Carolina Campaign and presents an entertaining, interesting and scholarly review of the events after Bentonville.

5 out of 5 stars Gripping portrait of the final days of the Army of Tennessee.......2000-10-06

Mark Bradley's second book is a worthy companion to his excellent book on Bentonville. This book takes a different approach, presenting the movements and subsequent surrender negotiations instead of the chaos of a pitched battle, but it works nontheless, infusing a different sort of drama and emotion. I found the descriptions of Sherman's army extremely interesting, and the fate of the Army of Tennessee was both moving and compelling. The book places the surrender of Johnston's army in its historical context, explaining the strong position that Johnston was negotiating from, and the possibility of uniting with Lee's army for another offensive, an event which worried Sherman greatly. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has read Bradley's Bentonville work, as this provides the rest of the story. The only negative comment is that I miss the incredible maps by Mark Moore, which are not present in this work. Otherwise, Mark Bradley continues his tradition of a very readable first hand account.

In THE SEA HUNTERS. Cussler tells of his lifelong love for the sea and ships and his dedication to the discovery and preservation of historic shipwrecks. With the same wonderful storytelling that Cussler brings to his novels, he describes his searches for shipwrecks that he and his NUMA volunteers have found. Opening each story with a creative dramatization of the ship and the way she met her end, he then brings the story into the present as he describes the immense research and careful preparation so often necessary to find a long lost ship.

Dramatic. compelling, and personal. Clive Cussler's THE SEA HUNTERS is as exciting and satisfying as the best of his fiction.

4 out of 5 stars Cussler Gets Real.......2006-11-16

Dusting off Dirk Pitt novels for a bit, Clive Cussler took some time to write "The Sea Hunters" True Adventures with Famous Shipwrecks." In it, Cussler writes a small dramatization of what might have happened to certain ships, from the terror of the Mississippi that was the C.S.S. Arkansas, to the wretched misfortune of the Leopoldville. After each dramatization, Cussler then explains the actions taken by himself and his group, NUMA, as the seek out each of these wrecks. Some of them are successful hunts, while others end with less impressive results.

The group finds wrecks in some of the strangest places. They uncover one ship in a parking lot on Galveston Island. They also "find" a locomotive in Colorado that was washed down river when a storm destroyed the train tracks. I won't spoil want they actually find on that particular case, but it does have a slightly humorous result.

Cussler seems to be more relaxed with his writing style in this particular book. He attempts to come off as an egotistical lurch, but it is easy to realize that this man really enjoys what he is doing. His enthusiasm is what keeps this book afloat, and it makes for a fun read that's just as good or better than his Dirk Pitt books.

Highly recommended to fans of nautical history, especially those interested in the Confederate Navy. Cussler reveals quite a few gems in the Rebel fleet. My personal favorite is the aforementioned C.S.S. Arkansas. Until I read this book, I had never heard of it. But much like Cussler says in this book, "The winners write the history."

                                    A very nice read.

                                    4 out of 5 stars Bogie's Review.......2005-03-12

This book is mostly non-fiction in that the greatest emphasis is on the real activities Cussler and NUMA members go through to find different ships (and a train). If you love his fiction stories of Dirk Pitt and Steve Austin then you'll get a little sense of what is in this book. Multiple short stories of different catastrophes at sea or in other waters. He dramatizes each catastrophe detailing what (he believes) happened to the crewmembers and the ship (or train) in the last hours of its life--these seem very realistic. Fast forward to today and he documents all the research and interviewing of witnesses (if they are still alive) he does in order to prove or disprove the historical records of where the wreck is located. He finally details the long, boring hours of trolling with a magnetometer to find the wreck. He admits that these are boring. When he spends a lot of time on those details that makes the stories somewhat boring too. What I thought was fascinating was the research, his sifting through multiple conflicting pieces of evidence and how he sometimes comes to the conculusion that the historical record was wrong and the wreck was actually in a different place, how after he finishes searching for the wreck, he does find it within a 1/2 mile of where he expected to find it and sometimes tens of miles away from the officially recorded location. To me this is much like a good detective story.

3 out of 5 stars Don't assume you'll like this because you like his fiction.......2005-03-03

I bought and read this book because I've -- literally -- bought and ready every other Cussler book.

Frankly, I found this one a bit of a bore. Not bad... but not why I read Cussler.

I'm going to stick with Cussler's fiction.
