A broadening of focus.......2003-08-14
Here Pomada, with co-author Michael Larsen and photographer Douglas Keister, branches out from her San Francisco roots in search of Painted Ladies in other regions of the country--and finds them. Once again she shows houses of all sizes, degrees of elaboration, and amounts of gaudiness--the quietly lavender Blackberry Inn of Camden, ME, the darkly splendiferous English Queen Anne at 130 Mt. Vernon St., Boston, beach cottages on Martha's Vineyard, a vividly red church in West End, NJ, a crisp turqouise-and-cream confection from Cape May, a wondrously porched house in Savannah, GA, even a brick eclectic in Milwaukee. One wonderful little gem on p. 89 is an Aspen, CO, cottage whose front-porch gable comprises a blending rainbow of 25 colors--"14 blues of the sky and oranges from the sunset." The Morey Mansion of Redlands, the Carson Mansion of Eureka, and several Main Street buildings are here too. Pomada even contrived to get permission to show some interiors from a Portland house. These lovely houses will set you dreaming even if you don't own one of the same vintage yourself.
A spectacular symphony of color and form.......2001-01-05
"Daughters of Painted Ladies" is a beautiful tribute to restored Victorian houses from throughout the United States. Full-color photographs by Douglas Keister are complemented by the commentaries of Elizabeth Pomada and Michael Larsen.
The book focuses on what the authors call the "Colorist Movement" in historic house restoration. In other words, every one of the homes pictured has been painted "in three or more contrasting colors" that "bring out the decorative ruffles and flourishes" of each structure. So if your idea of a Victorian home is a dull, gloomy old mansion in a state of disrepair, be prepared to have that stereotype blown away. These "painted ladies" are some of the most vibrant and beautiful homes I have ever seen.
The book captures many different Victorian era styles: Italianate, Second Empire, Steamboat Gothic, Queen Anne, Octagon, Stick, and Victorian eclectic. And don't miss the special appearance by "Lucy," the elephant-shaped house built by James Lafferty. The colorist approach to these homes truly accentuates the varied vocabulary of Victorian architecture, with its towers, covered verandas, neoclassical pillars, oriel windows, decorated verge boards, and other fanciful details.
The book concludes with some helpful tips and resources for those interested in creating their own painted lady. If you are a lover of Victorian era architecture, buy this spectacular book and prepare to indulge in a decadent symphony of visual splendor.
it change my home style.......1997-08-30
After I read and enjoyed this beautiful book I painted my home in Victorian style and soon many houses in Ushuaia Tierra del Fuego Argentina, also change the "white walls, black roof" they ever were. Thanks! Virgini

The artist's "bedtime stories" book.......1998-06-19
"Becoming a Successful Artist" is my favorite art book - based on the careers of 20 or so artists - it delves into their past triumphs and disappointments along the way to fame and fortune. This isn't the type of book that one needs to read only once; I've read it atleast 20 times. Some of the stories really touch my heart - especially about Harley Brown. Others are encouraging, and a few gave me a sense for the business side of art.
Because the book presents a personal viewpoint for each artist, it covers just about everything that an artist can experience as he or she goes through the hoops of becoming an artist. The advice is excellent. Anyone who is considering turning to full time art for their livelyhood should read this book. It presents the reality of becoming an artist.

The Essential Guide To The Italian Renaissance!.......2002-01-23
Back in my days as an Art History major, I realized early on that you really DID need to know about the history and the culture that gave birth to the art of the Italian Renaissance. Often, after a lecture, I would race home to try and find out more about a particular painter or family that supported an artist. This book gave me PLENTY of much need information. I got to know who the major players were, had artistic terms clarified, and got neat biographical information about everyone from Clement VI to Palladio. This delightful book also covered music, diplomacy, the role of the church, and literature. It also has hundreds of illustrations. Of special note was the section concerning the status of women. With over 750 entries, it is perfect for the student and the scholar.

Book Description
In 1984, Working Group 8.2 of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) threw down the gauntlet at its Manchester conference, challenging the traditionalist orthodoxy with its uncommon research approaches and topics. Manchester 1984, followed by research methods conferences in Copenhagen (1990) and Philadelphia (1997), marked the growing legitimacy of the linguistic and qualitative turns in Information Systems research and played a key role in making qualitative methods a respected part of IS research. As evidenced by the papers in this volume, Working Group 8.2 conferences showcase fresh thinking, provocative sessions, and intellectual stimulation. The spirited, at times boisterous, and always enlivening debate has turned WG8.2 conferences into life-changing and discipline-changing inspirational events.
Information Systems Research: Relevant Theory and Informed Practice comprises the edited proceedings of the WG8.2 conference, "Relevant Theory and Informed Practice: Looking Forward from a 20-Year Perspective on IS Research," which was sponsored by IFIP and held in Manchester, England, in July 2004. The conference attracted a record number of high-quality manuscripts, all of which were subjected to a rigorous reviewing process in which four to eight track chairs, associate editors, and reviewers thoughtfully scrutinized papers by the highly regarded as well as the newcomers. No person or idea was considered sacrosanct and no paper made it through this process unscathed. All authors were asked to revise the accepted papers, some more than once; thus, good papers got better. With only 29 percent of the papers accepted, these proceedings are significantly more selective than is typical of many conference proceedings.
This volume is organized in 7 sections, with 33 full research papers providing panoramic views and reflections on the Information Systems (IS) discipline followed by papers featuring critical interpretive studies, action research, theoretical perspectives on IS research, and the methods and politics of IS development. Also included are 6 panel descriptions and a new category of "bright idea" position papers, 11 in all, wherein main points are summarized in a pithy and provocative fashion.

Book Description
Far from presenting a simple story for children, I Am My Body, NOT! presents a rather complex concept -- that we are something other than our physical form -- in a remarkably simple way that children (ages 6 years and up) can comprehend and accept. The author, Adam Abraham and illustrator, Marie Litster, have created a whimsical, friendly, and most of all, positive experience in a way that might best be described as "religion-neutral."
Parents, grandparents and educators are sure to love I Am My Body, NOT! because its rational, sensitive and inclusive portrayal of human issues crosses barriers of color, class, and culture. In addition, the innovative, color-coded Vocabulary Power Builder system enhances the book's value as both a reading and language teaching tool.
A new perennial is born.
Customer Reviews:
Every child should have this book!.......2002-08-31
I was amazed at the way this author teaches kids about their bodies, but keeps coming back to how "you are NOT your body". It encourages being a friendly and helpful person. In other words, it is about "who you really are" not about your body. A great message to give kids. It also introduces information and gives room for discussion about puberty and death (two difficult subjects for some parents). This author handles it beautifully!!!I like it that the book is spiritual, but leaves room for every faith to teach their child accordingly. I highly recommend this book!
The distinction between body and the individual or spirit.......2001-07-06
Specifically written and illustrated for young readers ages 4 to 12, I Am My Body, NOT! offers a unique, effective, and very highly recommended introduction to major philosophical and physiological issues including the external physical body; the body's internal systems and their function; the distinction between body and the individual or spirit; the changes of puberty; the death of the body but not the spirit; and the naturalness of human diversity. Written in a "kid friendly" manner and devoid of sectarian proselytizing, I Am My Body, NOT! has the added value of building up a young reader's vocabulary within contextual definitions.

Ever wonder what all those fancy martial arts weapons are for? Find out in this definitive manual.
Customer Reviews:
Inaccurate.......2005-08-22
This book seems to be based on Hong Kong movies. full of historic inaccuracies. It only goes to show, being an expert in martial arts does not make sure one is an expert in history of arms and armor. Only people not familiar with this field of study can think it is any good. Speak to any expert in this field and they will tell you to skip this book.
the Scud missile of arms and armor reference books..........2004-07-03
...as in "inaccurate and of limited effectiveness". Though intended as an introduction to the subject, this book is so superficial and shoddily-written that it misleads more than it educates the reader. Although a table of Chinese characters is included, a non-Chinese reader will be confused and misinformed by the non-standard transliterations of terms used by the author. There are some weapons, such as dart-launching devices, which are found in kung fu movies and old fables. In several cases (such as seen under the entry for "halberd", the same name is applied to arms whose configurations are distinctly different, and which in old military texts such as the WUJING ZONGYAO and WUBEIZHI are described with different names. The author also seems unaware that a weapon he calls the "Guandao" is never called that in classic military books; the proper term is "Yinyuedao" (reclining moon knife). The classification of sabers (the author calls them "dau") is hopelessly inadequate. It does not cover the principal blade shapes nor does it address handle length. The author's implying that they are "wide bladed" is ludricous since this ignores the fact that most types of sabers used during the late Imperial period (the liuyedao, yanmaodao, piandao, zhanmadao, miaodao, and others) had relatively narrow blades which tapered to a point. [A far better introduction to Chinese sabers can be found in Philip Tom's "Some Notable Sabers of the Qing Dynasty at the Metropolitan Museum of Art", Metropolitan Museum JOURNAL., Vol. 36. For edged weapons of a much earlier period, try Yang Hong's WEAPONS IN ANCIENT CHINA, NY/Beijing: Science Press 1992]. These are just a few examples which hopefully will persuade potential buyers to pass on this turkey and keep their wallets in their pockets.
Folklore that is Not Historically Accurate.......2004-06-21
Though popular with Martial Artists unfamiliar with Chinese History, this book is so full or errors that it should not be kept in print. The entire work seems to be based on little more than the folklore surrounding Chinese martial arts. The author did not consult primary Chinese langauge sources (even though he is Chinese) and has no bibliography AT ALL. For accuarte information concerning Chinese Arms and Swordsmanship see the Chinese Swords and Swordsmanship Forum at: www.swordforum.com
A visually striking survey.......2003-12-24
"Ancient Chinese Weapons: A Martial Artist's Guide," by Jwing-Ming Yang, is a survey of a large number of weapons. The book is full of drawings and informative text. Spears, sabers, tridents, shields, and other types of offensive and defensive devices are covered.
In addition to discussing more familiar types of weapons, the book depicts such bizarre looking devices as the Wolf Brush, the Iron Claw and the Flying Claw. There are also weapons with such evocative names as the Heaven-Earth Sun-Moon Saber and the Zi Wu Mandarin Duck Axe. Particularly interesting is the coverage of non-weapons that evolved into weapons, such as cymbals or chopsticks. The book is clearly written, logically organized, and visually appealing.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrreat!.......2003-06-17
This book is essential for every martial artist or anyone interested in ancient weapons. True, this book does not supply the reader with any technique, but it covers the history and development of every weapon I can think of . It is written clearly, with large illustrations. What more, It gives you the English and Chinese name of the weapon, as well as the Chinese character. Dr. Yang certainly knows what he's talking about. All around, an excellent, comprehensible reference on ancient chinese weapons.

Very nice pictures, with the state flower, allowing the use of brighter colors if the birds are more browns and greys. Many pages, this book is well worth the additional cost.
