Becky loved it!.......2006-05-03
I found the book Woodturning Jewelry a very well written and informative book, Hilary Bowen has a conversational style of writing that speaks to you, not at you. Giving the right amount of information without being over whelming. The directions are clear and understandable even to a beginner. The illustrations and pictures make step by step instruction great for quick review reference when making a peace of jewelry. I also found her side notes of great help for quick reminders. In the book you will find information on specific types of woods to use. She explores the use of different types of stains and includes step by step instructions on how to inlay metal into the wood. As a relatively new wood turner I would highly recommend this book to any and all wood turners that are looking for great ideas and information on making wood jewelry.
Not for a novice wood lathe worker.......2006-04-11
This book is the only book a person working in the jewelry/metal arts would need to get a very good education in wood and alternative materials. If you have a snall wood lathe that will allow you to change chucks or face plates some wood bits and a couple of ideas. Than you will be set for a fun time in the shop. You can get your Christmas presents out of the way. The projects shown give enough design info that you can just continue to expand.
The thrid section is well worth the cost of the book twice over. Even if you only read and use one of the chapters it will be well worth the time spent.
The pictures are clear, and of good size, the work table surface in the pictures is keep to a minimum. The drawings that will be enhanced with color were given color. the line drawings are also good. This is a keeper and it will be number one on the reference shelf. I own It
A really good book.......2006-02-04
Wooden jewelry is hot these days, or so my wife tells me, so I looked through this book to pick up some tips. (By the way, "jewellery" is the British spelling). I'm always looking for new ways to use up the small scraps and offcuts of exotic woods that I can't bear to throw away.
The first part of the book contains the requisite safety rules and a general discussion of tools, equipment and design fundamentals you'll need to create jewelry on your lathe. The part that really caught my attention, though, was the section on further techniques and refinements. In this section, the author discusses stains and dyes, inlaying wire (very cool, I'm going to try that next), laminating and alternative materials, as well as finishing techniques. She also identified the various jewelry findings and what they're used for. ("Findings" are those little clasps, wires and other necessary hardware.)
I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the book because it addresses all the basics, yet it has enough different ideas in it that the advanced turner won't feel left out. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to experiment with turning small items such as jewelry. You'll never make much money at it, but hey, it's a hobby, right?
Very good - How to book.......2006-01-27
Anyone who has some woodturning experience should enjoy this very well written book. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in turning jewelry.
In the beginning of the book you get short lessons on Health and Safety, Tools and equipment, type of wood, different type of chucks and design.
Then you get lots of good detailed information on different projects including earrings, brooches, bangles, rings, and necklaces. The book does a very good job, step by step, on design, turning procedures and mounting the turned wood pieces to the jewelry findings. The book has many high quality and very close-up photos of the different stages of each project.
Another section covers details on enhancing the wood turnings with stains and dyes, inlaying with different types of wire, and laminating. And if all this isn't enough, there is another chapter that will give you ideas on other techniques like beading, inlays, gold leaf, and carving on your turnings.
Overall this is an excellent book for anyone wanting to make jewelry on a lathe.
Excellent photos good beginning book.......2006-01-09
Ms. Bowen?s book assumes that you have some woodturning experience, and so does not go into detail on the basics of turning wood. She has included many high-quality, full-color photos of both finished pieces and works in progress.
The first part of the book covers tools (both essential and optional), glues, chucking, and woods that are suitable for jewelry. The first section also includes a chapter on the concepts of design. This chapter covers the topics of form, function, proportion (including the golden rectangle), balance and delicacy. This will be a good help to those of us that are not natural born artists.
The second part of the book has 5 chapters, covering earrings, brooches, bangles, rings, and necklaces. Each chapter starts with photos of finished items and includes many individual photos within the chapter. These photos will be excellent for helping the beginning jewelry maker get started. Each chapter also includes step-by-step instructions for making a couple of basic pieces.
The third section covers staining/dying, inlaying wires, laminating and other decorative methods. In this section there is a good chapter covering the various jewelry findings that can be used with turned items. This section ends with a chapter on alternative materials such as bone, horns, nuts, plastics and metals that can also be turned on the wood lathe.
The book has an appendix detailing the properties of some common woods that are good for jewelry making. There is a bibliography of 5 books with titles covering band saws, gilding, dyes, Art Nouveau Style, design, and wood identification.
Overall this is an excellent book with outstanding photos that should be an inspiration to anyone that wants to make jewelry on a wood lathe.

Book Description
In many ways, the Northern soldier in the Civil War fought as if he had never left home. On campsites and battlefields, the Union volunteer adapted to military life with attitudes shaped by networks of family relationships, in units of men from the same hometown. Understanding these links between the homes the troops left behind and the war they had to fight, writes Reid Mitchell, offers critical insight into how they thought, fought, and persevered through four bloody years of combat. In The Vacant Chair, Mitchell draws on the letters, diaries, and memoirs of common soldiers to show how mid-nineteenth-century ideas and images of the home and family shaped the union soldier's approach to everything from military discipline to battlefield bravery. For hundreds of thousands of "boys," as they called themselves, the Union army was an extension of their home and childhood experiences. Many experienced the war as a coming-of-age rite, a test of such manly virtues as self-control, endurance, and courage. They served in companies recruited from the same communities, and they wrote letters reporting on each other's performance--conscious that their own behavior in the army would affect their reputations back home. So, too, were they deeply affected by letters from their families, as wives and mothers complained of suffering or demanded greater valor. Mitchell also shows how this hometown basis for volunteer units eroded respect for military rank, as men served with officers they saw as equals: "Lieut Col Dewey introduced Hugh T Reid," one sergeant wrote dryly, "by saying, 'Boys, behold your colonel,' and we _beheld_ him." In return, officers usually adopted paternalist attitudes toward their "boys"--especially in the case of white officers commanding black soldiers. Mitchell goes on to look at the role of women in the soldiers' experiences, from the feminine center of their own households to their hatred of Confederate women as "she-devils." The intimate relations and inner life of the Union soldier, the author writes, tell us much about how and why he kept fighting through four bloody years--and why demoralization struck the Confederate soldier as the war penetrated the South, threatening his home and family while he was at the front. "The Northern soldier did not simply experience the war as a husband, son, father, or brother--he fought that way as well," he writes. "That was part of his strength. The Confederate soldier fought the war the same way, and, in the end, that proved part of his weakness." The Vacant Chair uncovers this critical chapter in the Civil War experience, showing how the Union soldier saw--and won--our most costly conflict.
Customer Reviews:
Sort of a layman's book.......2006-02-12
and surprising at that.
Not stuffy or academic,
and covers a lot more information than expected
Personal experiences in a time of turmoil.......2000-05-10
The Vacant Chair adds a personal element to the dates learned in history class. The words and feelings expressed by soldiers recounts a time lost - dedication to an ideal, and courage. Families during the Civil War lived day to day wondering if loved ones were alive, and Mitchell captures their turmoil and hope through the letters and thoughts of soldiers and their families. Although the book focuses on the Northern soldier, one can imagine similar sentiments from both sides. An excellent addition to the history buff's library.

Book Description
Birding is booming. The hobby (or, in many cases, passion, or even addiction) has been growing steadily for years, according to studies conducted by both governmental and private organizations. An amazing number of people -- more than 70 million, by one 2001 survey of recreation preferences -- say they participate in birdwatching.
Undoubtedly, many of these people simply put feeders in their back yards and enjoy watching the hummingbirds, chickadees, and goldfinches that show up. But just as certainly, more and more birders are venturing out to discover the fun of seeing new birds in new places, whether it's a drive through a national wildlife refuge or a guided walk at a nature preserve.
Once someone has discovered the joys and challenges of birding, it doesn't take long to learn that there are places in the United States that experienced birders visit as surely as geese fly south in the fall. These spots are to birders what the Rockies are to skiers, or Pebble Beach is to golfers. Such a place is the region encompassing the Texas Gulf Coast and the lower Rio Grande Valley -- now the home of the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, a state-designated driving route connecting more than 300 birdwatching sites from the Louisiana state line to the Mexican border. Brown highway signs, marked with the profile of a Black Skimmer, point the way to these bird-rich destinations.
Exploring the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail examines highlights of this popular route: locations ranging from national wildlife refuges with tens of thousands of acres to small city parks to stretches of isolated road passing through birdy habitat. In this guide, expert birder/writer Mel White profiles more than 80 of the best sites along the trail, chosen for diversity of habitat, species, and seasonality; productivity; and accessibility. Site listings give general (and often specific) directions, contact information (including websites when available), advice about when and how to bird the location, and a listing of some of the notable species that might be found. Also featured are nearby museums, nature centers, festivals, and accommodations of particular interest to the visiting birder.
