4 out of 5 stars Good Basic Skills Guide.......2000-04-10

After seeing the number of painting books by Smith I took to him to be an authority. I found it straight forward and easy to follow. Lots of instuction and tips. A bit above the understanding level of my 7 year old daughter but perfect for me to graduate from painting by number. Seems to cover just about all one would neeed to know in order to take up the past time.

There is, as Bernie Bookbinder amiably reports, much more to this storied dart of land piercing the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of New York than ducks, potatoes, the Great Gatsby estates, and the swells who swell the Hampton resort communities in season. They're all here, of course, but so is the island's startling (and beautifully photographed) geology and topography, its Indian past, its early colonization by the Dutch and the English, its occupation during the American Revolution, its vibrant seafaring tradition, its famed--and at times, infamous--railroad, its parkways and expressways, its golf courses and beaches, its laboratories and factories, its suburban sprawl, and its cultural contributions from Walt Whitman to Jerry Seinfeld and Billy Joel. Lavishly illustrated with current and archival photos, drawings and paintings, this eminently readable and appealing volume serves as both a history and tribute to a physicality wracked by identity crisis; while Long Island may make up half of New York City, in many senses, it couldn't be farther removed. It's that continuing dichotomy that makes the place so interesting. --Jeff Silverman

    5 out of 5 stars A thorough examination. .......2007-05-21

This was perhaps even more informative than I expected. The photos and additional drawings were perfect and beautiful. I enjoyed the glimpses into what sets Long Island apart from other parts of New York City as far as culture and identity. Makes me want to visit again and again. I had bought this book for research purposes on its Native American past and wasn't disappointed to find a wealth of other information, interesting facts, and ideas for places to experience.

TVs. VCRs. Computers. Video games. Are our children being hypnotized by the unblinking eye of the small screen —whether television or computer? Most parents know —and recent studies confirm —that too much time spent watching television or playing computer games can be harmful for kids. Increased violence, poor social skills, behavioral problems, apathy, and declining test scores are all part of the problem. How do we protect our families? By getting unplugged.

Here's an easy-to-follow, 4-week program —devised by the authors and implemented with smashing success —that helps children and parents take charge of their electronic addictions. Start by taking the TV Quiz to determine how much is too much for your family. Learn how to replace hours of screen time with constructive, challenging, and, above all, fun activities everyone will enjoy. From preschoolers to teens to adults, the whole family benefits when you gain control of your television and computer habits.

1 out of 5 stars "Getting Unplugged" Fire up the cable and hand me my mallet!.......2001-01-05

This is quite possibly the worst book I have ever read. And I have consumed Thosands, which might come as a shock to the authour, who considers anyone who has ever glimpsed a television an addle brained halfwit. Her hysteria is matched only by her juvinile simplicity. All electronic media, according to this book, is demonic, and has no value at all! To make her point(?) she quotes such indisputible moral leaders as Al Gore (Nuff said?), and Dr. Spock, who blames television for everything from Vietnam to diaper rash. Need I remind the good doctor that his feel-good disipline free approach to parenting is responsible for two generations of mewling self-important nymphomaniacs? In the real world, you alone must choose all you study. Who's to say you can't enjoy 18th century novels, and MST3000? The Tao Te Ching, and NewsRadio? Those who follow Neo-Luddite dogma will never be truly enlightened, for they have closed themselves off from a fountainhead of knowledge. True, vast cesspools of thought free frivolity must be navigated past, but there are also to be found, ceasless works of history, life, and true art. "Getting Unplugged", teaches you to throw the baby out with the bathwater, while sporting a smug, puritanical, reflectionless grin on your unthinking skull. I'll admit, there are a few parts in this book where I didn't want to drive a rouqe mallet through said unthinking skull of anyone who whould find this schoolmarmish drivel uplifting, but these are few and far between. If you want a thought provoking book on media, read "Virtuous Reality", by Jon Katz. If you used Dr. Spocks methods to turn your children into intellectual and moral midgets, then by all means, buy this book! it will teach you the fine arts of scapegoating, and blaming inanimate objects for your own shortcomings.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2007-07-19

I just got this book in the mail the other day and it is great. It covers in basic detail the entire history of the paras starting in Vietnam. It has many very good photos as well. My only complaint would be the sometimes poor translation from french. But the book is well laid out. From the start it tells of each war/battle/operation that the paras have been in after that it lists all of the specailist units within the paras as well as all of the weapon systems employed by them. Another detail I found interesting was the break down of the countries of orgin and number of men in the paras as of 2001. Over all a very good "table" book.

THIS BOOK IS A DEFINITE FOR THOSE LOOKING FOR GREAT PICTURES AND GREAT INFORMATION ON THE 2 REP OF THE FRENCH FOREIGN LEGION. IT WAS A PLEASURE TO READ, AND I'M SURE THE FRENCH FOREIGN LEGION AND THE ELITE TROOPS OF THE 2 REP WOULD BE PROUD OF THIS BOOK.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Source for Identifying Reptiles.......2006-02-04

I work at David Fleay Wildlife Park on the Gold Coast and this is the reference book I recommend to those wanting to identify either reptiles or amphibians that they have in their backyard, come across while travelling or from photographs. Reptiles and Amphibians of Australia is a very large, thick and heavy doorstopper of a book so not really ideal for the backpacker who wants something to carry in their backpack. If you have a car, or want it for the home though it is ideal.

As well as great photographs to compare what you are wondering about there is also a substantial amount of information on each reptile and amphibian. There are also shaded maps to indicate where you are most likely to come across each animal that you seek.

If you are after a book that covers the whole range of animals in Australia and not just reptiles and amphibians I would recommend Encyclopaedia of Australian Wildlife by Janet Healey. If you live in South East QLD then Wildlife of Greater Brisbane by the Queensland Museum is also a great reference book. For those interested only in birds I would recommend Michael Marcombe's A Field Guide to Australian Birds.

5 out of 5 stars Bible of Australian Herpetology.......2002-02-06

Since the first edition of this work came out in 1975, this work has been a must-have for anyone, layman or professional, who is interested in Australia's unique and very speciose collection of reptiles and amphibians. Successive upgrades through the years have kept this book up to date (but at the same time considerably larger and more expensive than the original).

Quite simply, this book is a guide to ALL of Australia's (including it's island territories) frogs and reptiles. Each taxa has a full description of it's appearance, distribution (by way of both text and an accompanying shaded map), habits and, in the majority of species, a corresponding colour photograph of the living animal. The book has very thorough and simple to use dichotomous keys that should allow any specimen in hand to be quickly identified. A comprehensive list of scientific references is also given for those wishing to conduct more in-depth research. Also included are basic guides to the collection, preservation and captive care of specimens.

I have only one gripe with the current (Sixth - year 2000) edition. Since (I think) 1992 there has been no major rewrite of the main text - instead an increasingly large Appendix of has been slapped on the end. The current Appendix is now over 40 pages long with numerous subsequently described species and nomeclatural rearrangements. It can be very annoying having to flick from the main text to the Appendix in such a large volume to see what the current information is.

Still, this is a bearable hardship to pay for such a treasuretrove of information and illustrations.

                  Book Description

Anyone interested in reptiles is interested in Australia. Reptiles of Australia is the most comprehensive and user-friendly guide available to every one of its crocodiles, turtles, monitor lizards, dragons, snakes, skinks, geckos, and other lizards. A vast expanse of land and coastline encompassing tropical, temperate, and arid environments, Australia is home to a rich and unique reptile fauna--nearly three times as many species as in North America. With the current count at 836 described species, and with many more unnamed, it is a fauna as diverse as any in the world. Compact and accessible, this guide features a full-color photograph of each species and authoritative text that describes key identification traits. Thumbnail outlines of each family group further enable easy identification.

Australia is a mosaic of habitats, each element of which is the favored environment for a distinctive reptile species: warm, shallow, turbid seas fringed with mangroves, clear coral reefs, freshwater wetlands, tropical rainforests and savannahs, arid stony plains and ranges, sandridge deserts, alpine areas, and cool southern forests and heaths. A square mile of desert covered with spinifex grasses may support more reptile species than an area of comparable size anywhere in the world.

Attractive, portable, and affordable, Reptiles of Australia is the ideal home or traveling companion for all reptile enthusiasts, whether pet owners, amateur herpetologists, or specialists of this spectacular aspect of natural history.

Good books on monitors are hard to come by and this is one of them. Up-to-date info and beautiful photo's (the one on the cover is almost worth the price of the book IMO) make it a must for anyone interested in these incredible dragon-like lizards.

From the magnificient and beautiful Perentie to the cute Short-Tailed Pygmy Monitor all the varanids occuring in Australia are described and illustrated. It is also a good reference for those who wish to keep them as pets.

5 out of 5 stars An Overabundance of Toads.......2000-03-30

Science/Social Studies picture book focusing on the balance of nature in Australia. Gives factual information about the attempts to control the beetles which were destroying sugar cane crops. Giant toads, the size of dinner plates, were imported to eat the beetles. At first the toads stayed in the fields where they belonged, but soon they strayed to the towns and caused many problems. This book shows that you never know what might happen when you interfere with Mother Nature. The illustrations are wonderful, especially the one of the toad dressed up as a baby!
