Great introductory reference.......2007-07-11
If you've just started your love affair with fine prints, you're sure to want a better understanding of just what this thing is and how its unique character came about. Griffiths's book would work well as your first guide to the technique and history of printmaking.
The tour starts with the major categories of technique (relief, intaglio, litho, and silkscreen), then discusses the extensions needed for printing in multiple colors, followed by a summary of photo processes applicable to each technique. This isn't a how-to for the aspiring printmaker or an academically meticulous history. Instead, it's just enough to let the new printlover know what the words mean and what the differences are, along with a sketch of the major who and when in printmaking innovation. I fault it only for under-representing the incredible art and technique of the Japanese woodcut masters.
Illustrations abound, demonstrating nearly every point that Griffiths brings up. The bibliography by itself is worth attention - it not only lists sources of information, it categorizes them by areas of interest and adds other comments about each one. Very few bibliographies in any field offer that kind of help to the reader. And, as the beginner might hope, it ends with a list of common abbreviations and a strong glossary. This book is a great way to introduce new printlovers to the object their of affection.

This is an excellent book for anyone trying to learn more about the various kinds of printmaking techniques. It is very useful for identification of prints. Lots of great pictures and text that explains the techniques and history very well. I highly recommend it.
What is printmaking?.......2000-04-17
Have you ever tried to explain to an art student what is printmaking? Better. Have you ever tried to explain to an art student why it's still important? You can try to do a very long speech about how it was and still is important for artists. You can say that print was for an artist like Rembrant a way of thinking. And you could even explain how the techniques used by the artists were connected with their subjects. But you can't only talk you must show some pictures. That is exactaly what this book does. The autor was very sucesfully in showing us the value of printmaking since the "unknow masters" to our century. He can explain without being boring how etchings were doing and I believe he could do so because the pictures were sharpily choosen. Without doubt no art teatcher can miss these piece. And it's essential to any print lover.

Yanagi's latest series, My Grandmothers, is a penetrating and fantastic analysis of the future dreams of young women. Using makeup and computer manipulation, she shows her protagonists as they imagine they will look and live in 50 years. Accompanied by brief, suggestive texts based on conversations with her subjects, these personal visions of life in the year 2050 run the gamut from a purple-haired grandma riding shotgun on her young stud's motorcycle to a lonely elegant woman eating alone on a train. This first monograph on Miwa Yanagi includes work ranging from 1994 to three new images produced in early 2004.

Her works are poignant and compelling. Rarely do they rest on past successes but are always going forward. Her ideas are fresh and end at their appropriate time. It is only a pity for her that her work is not seen much in the American West. Perhaps meaning and content are not of interest here. A great and important artist who will be remembered in the history of WORLD art. A great book that transports the reader's mind to new and interesting places with out cheapening the experience with weak-kneed orientalism or anime nonsense. What a refreshing examination on a Womans positioning in this world.

Solid multi-audience resource, some gaps.......2004-07-12
This book covers a lot of ground, with information that will be of interest to IT security, HR and privacy managers (in some large companies security and privacy are combined into a single function), internal auditors, and database, systems and network administrators.
The first section, Business Organization Issues, covers policies for a number of functional areas, auditing, e-commerce issues, and related concerns at the administrative level. Technology is also addressed as a high-level, as are topical concerns such as identity theft and internet activities.
Section two covers the full range of applicable tools and related technologies, including encryption/cryptography, cookies and profiling, monitoring and content filtering, wireless communications and data mining.
In the final section US and international laws and issues are covered at a high level, but sufficiently detailed to provide the salient issues. Although there are some minor gaps in this section, it was up-to-date when it was published, and the gaps can be addressed through extrapolation and other publications. The most notable gap is the absence of Sarbanes-Oxley Act Section 404 requirements related to data access and manipulation, and other assurance measures. That said, the material in this book is consistent with SOA, and the information and advice map nicely to it if you cross reference requirements to business organization issues, and tools and technologies sections of this book.

This book covers the wide spectrum of privacy issues facing businesses today...from laws and regulations to technology to business policies, procedures and other topics. The variety of writers for the many sections provides a great breadth of viewpoints, advice, knowledge, experience and interpretation of many privacy issues and how to address them within an organization.
I have used this often for addressing privacy compliance and awareness issues within my organization. I look forward to getting the next edition when it becomes available!

I've got it and you don't! Too bad. It's outta print. I called the publisher and they are not reissuing. Go find it used. It is worth every penny ($85 I paid) if you need or desire to ID gulls.
Gulls made easy..........2006-02-23
Well....maybe not easy....but, not through any fault of this book! The book starts with a lesson on the various body parts, as you will need to know many of these in order to ascertain what gull you have sitting in front of you. A comparison of the wings comes next. Then, it goes through each gull species and all of its plumages, including the months you might expect to see them in that plumage. It ends by discussing the various hybrids. If you ever hope to get beyond referring to gulls as "gull sp.," this book will do it. When you hear other birders refer to "the gull bible," this is it!!! However, don't think that this is a field guide you might want to carry in a fanny pack...it's a heavyweight!

This book is a must have for every birdwatcher! If you have problems with indentifying gulls, this is the book to have! It anwers all my questions I have about gull distribution and indentification. Now I know how to Indentify those Ring-billed Gulls that I see in the parking lot. Also I have a better outlook on where they came from as Well!

growing up with the knowledge that there are just a few "kinds" of gulls and realising after a while that all the gulls you knew are now called somthing compleatly different (the whole herring,yellow legged,caspian,armenian,lesser black backed,sibirian etc. complex). this is the book we were all looking for, easy to use and extremly proffesional.

The size and massive detail in this new book on identifying the gulls of the Northern Hemisphere is likely to deter most readers from more than a cursory leafing through its lovely paintings and photographs. But if you're curious to learn more about these common but highly varied, many-shades-of-gray birds around us, and you happen to live in a coastal area as I do, with more than a few gulls that are hard to identify during the winter, this might be a book to look into more thoroughly.
A caution though: gulls can be notoriously difficult to identify accurately, since they have so much finely detailed, age-related plumage variation. But an effort to simply knuckle-down and learn more about all this, such as this book amply provides, can pay off greatly in much greater detective-fun trying to figure out all these heretofore anonymously gray gulls sailing and prowling around us here each year. It's already helped me develop better skills in figuring out nearly all the varied groups of gulls around us here more quickly than I would have heretofore thought possible. And to more quickly decide which birds you can or cannot more accurately identify...and why.
The detailed accounts and maps of the distribution and relative abundance of various gull species have also helped me better understand where the gulls that migrate through or winter in our area are likely to have come from. And, finally, as you delve more deeply into what's known about all these gull species, and their European and Asian counterparts, it becomes obvious that the series of beautiful, comparative paintings and color photographs provided in such detail for each species in its various age-plumages, subspecies, and hybrid-forms is worth the price of the book alone.
