Profiling twelve years of architectural education from 1972-1985, Education of an Architect celebrates the work of the talented students and the spirited faculty of the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of the Cooper Union. It is divided into two parts covering chronologically the first four years of the design studio, and the thesis year which is organized by topic: Instruments, Orders and Projections, the City, the Institution, Outskirts, the House, Bridges, Topographies and Texts.

This volume is a sequel to an earlier work of the same title, published in 1971 when the Cooper Union School of Architecture was invited by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, to exhibit student work produced between 1964 and 1971, the first such exhibition ever held at the Museum. That volume has since become a classic within architectural education, immensely influential upon architectural thought and practice in the last fifteen years.

This new collection presents work influenced by art, literature, and medicine, and consequently details the scope of expanded thought that now permeates Architecture.

Very informative........2007-04-11

This was a very informative book. I learned a lot about bullies and also about how school systems deal or don't deal with them. Unfortunately though I didn't find much useful information to help me make my child more assertive.

for the above reviewer, too academic you say, how much so are you the general reader. i'm 20, in my second year at uni studying classical greece and it's at a level to which everyone can read. it is an insult to the general readers intelligence that you refer to it as too academic. may i suggest concentration!

Reflections on a mirage.......2004-04-26

Paul Cartledge of Cambridge university is one of the foremost philhellenes and classical scholars in the world. Beyond that, to my knowledge he is the preeminent authority on ancient Sparta of the present age. In fact, I can only think of a handful of names that would qualify as being in his class.

The present book is a compilation of essays that Cartledge wrote during various times during his intellectual career. Cartledge engages sundry enduring questions that the in inquisitor of Spartan history is apt to have.

Some of the topics covered include the Laconian approach to slavery, homosexuality, the art of war, the duel kingship concept, the idea of the egalitarian citizen, the position and treatment of Lacedamon women as well as the AGOGE [i.e.: public education] of young Spartan males.

Through it all, Cartledge attempts an elucidation between what Sparta was "really" like and what he liked to call the Spartan "mirage" would have outsiders believe. The latter was how Sparta wished to project herself to all other Greek city states.

The present text is far easier to read than his SPARTA AND LACONIA (which was his doctoral dissertation presented in book form). Nevertheless, it would be prudent for the reader to have at least some familiarity with the Homeric epics as well as Herodotus and Thucydides. If you're able to grasp some of the inferences Cartledge makes, you'll be fine. If not, you might get lost.

This is a book that should be read by all graduate and undergraduate classrooms where the course is has in mind a focus on ancient Sparta. If Sparta is what you're interested in, then Cartledge is whom you should be reading. He really is that good.

TOO ACADEMIC.......2002-02-12

This book is not for the general reader interested in Sparta or Greek history. It is much too academic, with numerous references to other Greek scholars and to their writings. I know Paul Cartledge is an expert in the subject, but because of the schoarly manner in which this book was written, I just could not finish it.

Too large to be a field guide.......2007-09-18

This book was my constant companion for just under 3 weeks birding in Oz. It's a very nice book, but a field guide it is not. The huge size (about 6 x 9 inches) means it won't fit in any pocket, so I had to carry it in a backpack--hardly convenient for field use. I also looked at every other book on the market, at B&B's, bookstores, and wherever I went. All but two are much too large to be field guides, even though many are labeled as such. Of the two truly pocket-compatible books, one is clearly superior: Michael Morcombe's Field Guide to Australian Birds: Complete Compact Edition (not to be confused with his earlier, larger sized books). This one is about 4 x 9 in and the illustrations are annotated with labeled arrows to diagostic features of the birds. Alas, I found this book in a bookstore only on my last day in Australia after having searched intesively for it after first running across it in a B&B library. I bought it anyway, hoping some day to return to Oz.

Great Guide.......2007-07-14

This is a really good book for people who are into bird watching. I looked at several guides and I'm really glad that I got this one. The book is logically laid out and the colour plates are great. It is a bit big Aprox 16cm x 22cm but the way it is laid out justifies it. This is a great reference book that will give bird watches many years of enjoyment.

Very Good.......2006-06-15

This guide covers all the bird species known to occur in Australia - not an easy task in a continent with as rich an aviafauna.
I found it very good - the illustrations are excellent quality and often cover distinctive subspecies separately.
The maps, conveniently placed opposite the illustrations also show boundaries of the various subspecies' distribution - something few field guides seem to bother with!
All the essential information about appearence, size, voice and habitat is also found along with the maps right opposite the pictures.
These pages make up the bulk of the book, followed by a "Vagrant Bird Bulletin", breeding information, checklists for off-shore island territories and excellent lists of local oganisations and recommended further reading - complete with the competing field guides!
Once you remove the color cover, the book is bound in a sturdy but flexible plastic one - making it ideal for carrying in the field without getting it torn or soaked.
All in all, an excellent book that served me very well on my trip in Australia. Recommended.

Peterson Down Under.......2001-04-15

This book never left my side while I was in Oz, although at times I thought about leaving it behind. My biggest complaint would be size; this book is a bit too large to be a proper field guide. It is as thick as Nat'l Geo, but about an inch longer in width and height. The plates were more than adequate, however few birds were shown in juv. plumage. Good text descriptions, notes on behaviors, and birds in flight usually shown. Very Peterson-esque. Half of the book is a handbook at the back. Plenty of good life history info. on the birds, but not necessary in the field. If only the handbook came as a seperate supplement . . .

One last note: I did not see another book either in stores or in another birder's hand while in Australia that I thought was as good or better than this guide.
