5 out of 5 stars Try Your Hand at Drawing Astro Boy!.......2004-03-21

The "Let's Draw Manga" Series is the latest entry in the ever-growing field of instructional books aimed at Americans aspiring to create Japanese-style comics (or "manga"). As with the longer-running "How to Draw Manga" Series from Graphic-Sha, this new contender was originally published for a Japanese audience, and is now being made available in periodic English-language installments.

Do we need yet another bunch of "How-to" manga books competing for our dollars? I don't know. But "Let's Draw Astro Boy" is the one volume in this series that I can't recommend more highly.

To you younger folk, your first taste of "Astro Boy" may be the 2003 series currently running on Cartoon Network. But those of us manga/anime fans over 30 know that Astro Boy is one of the landmark characters of modern Japanese comics and animation, with a history going back almost 50 years. Created by Ozamu Tezuka (the "Walt Disney of Japanese Animation") as "Tetsuwan Atomu ("Mighty Atom" or "Strong-arm Atom")," Astro Boy appeared in one of the first anime programs to reach the US (in the 1960s). He's to sci-fi anime what Mickey Mouse is to mainstream US animation.

Astro Boy and Mickey Mouse also share this in common: they look SO EASY to draw, but soon you realize that if the slightest line is a few centimeters off, they just don't look like themselves. This book will give you enough pointers to avoid such pitfalls.

It's packed with tips for drawing Astro in typical movements like running, flying, and fighting. There's also a look at the insides of this robot's body (check out the BB gun that fires out of his...rump!). Especially valuable is a history the different interpretations of Astro over the years. Although pictures of much of his supporting cast are in the book, I would've liked more info about drawing them.

If you like drawing manga, anime, or non-Japanese cartoons, Astro (like Mickey Mouse or Bugs Bunny), should be one of those characters you can whip out from memory whenever the occasion arises. After reading "Let's Draw Astro Boy," you'll appreciate his deceptive simplicity.

          5 out of 5 stars Florida's Editorial Cartoonists a Significant Collection.......1998-09-27

In brief summary: a unique collection of contemporary editorial cartoons and a significant contribution, important to anyone interested in this facet of journalism in modern America. Nowhere exists a collection of all the cartoonists in one state. Pineapple Press, which specializes in Florida topics, published this first of its kind. Sixteen Florida newspaper cartoonists are represented here, giving readers a comprehensive opportunity to examine a wide variety of opinion on state, local and national issues. In his foreword, Pat Oliphant, one of the nation's best editorial cartoonists, offers acerbic comment on the state of editorial cartooning in America: not good. Oliphant commends author Harrison (a one-time newsman with a Ph.D., at the University of Miami) for undertaking the task of gathering this collection, with commentary and cartoons from each contributor, and describes the book as a "worthwhile historic document." It is that, and more. Author S.L. Harrison provides a perceptive introductory essay that provides a summary of editorial cartooning in America, noting that cartoons, once savage, biting and highly partisan, are today more often than not benign. Today, he notes, humor prevails: "the comic pages heavily influence the modern editorial page cartoon." A number of the Florida cartoonists, following the national example of Mike Peters and Jeff MacNelly, also produce a comic page feature in addition to their editorial page cartoon. For the record, cartoonists included in the collection are: Don Addis, St. Petersburg Times; Bruce Beattie, Daytona News-Journal; Clay Bennett, King Features; Earle Bowden, Pensacola News-Journal; James Casciari, Vero Beach Press Journal; Ralph Dunagin, Orlando Sentinel; Jake Fuller, Gainesville Sentinel; Ed Gamble, Florida Times-Union (Jacksonville); Chan Lowe, Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel; Doug MacGregor, Fort Myers News-Press; Jim Morin, Miami Herlad; Gene Packwood, Leesburg Daily Commercial; Jeff Parker, Florida Today (Melbourne); Wayne Stayskal, Tampa Tribune; Dana Summers, Orlando Sentinel; and C.M. Terry, Northwest Florida Daily News (Fort Walton Beach). One Florida cartoonist, Don Wright, declined to be included with his contemporaries. The omission is Wright's loss. This is a valuable book that brings to permanent print a number of artists who have not appeared in any collection to date. All are talented, a number are promising, some are outstanding: Jim Morin, a recent Pulitzer Prize-winner; Wayne Stayskal, who succeed Vaughn Shoemaker in Chicago; and Ed Gamble, who learned his trade at the Nashville Banner. No one interested in editorial cartoons should neglect this superb collection with excellent writing that introduces the reader to the artists who illuminate our newspaper pages with perceptive are and comment.

                        Book Description

In the last twenty years, urban centers worldwide have experienced enormous booms and busts as real-estate developers, financial institutions, and public officials first poured resources into physical redevelopment, then watched as the market collapsed before booming again in the 1990s. In this extensively revised edition of her highly regarded The City Builders, Susan Fainstein examines major redevelopment efforts in New York and London to uncover the forces behind these investment cycles and the role that public policy can play in moderating market instability.

Fainstein chronicles the progress of three development projects in New York (Times Square, downtown Brooklyn, and Battery Park City) and three in London (King's Cross, Spitalfields, and Docklands). Analyzing the political and economic processes underlying physical changes in these two cities during the last two decades, she uncovers the role played by developers' perceptions and strategies in their interactions with both public policy-makers and property markets. This new edition follows each development effort to the present and places the discussion in a newly strengthened theoretical framework.

In her investigation of the convergence between London and New York during the 1980s and then the divergence that began in the 1990s, Fainstein traces similarities and differences in the effects of globalization, ideology, and institutional structure in each city's experience. This comparative framework also sheds considerable light on the contributing roles of structure and agency in creating final outcomes.

Fainstein concludes by assessing the impact of "theme park" development on the urban fabric and recommending a set of realistic strategies to both redevelop cities and improve the lives of urban residents.

                              Book Description

THE ADVENT OF STEAM: THE MERCHANT SHIP BEFORE 1900

The advent of steam power was the greatest innovation in maritime transport since the development of the three-masted ship in the Middle Ages, but it took nearly a century to become established, and the story of its development in Europe, the Far East and in America is the subject of this volume.

There were good reasons, technical and economic, why the process was so lengthy and why sailing remained a viable option in so many trades throughout the century. As a mode of propulsion, the paddle wheel had many drawbacks and was only of limited use; even with the perfection of the screw propeller in the 1840s, progress was restrained by the uneconomic nature of early machinery, and it was not until efficient compound engines became widely available in the 1870s that the steamship finally flourished.
Much of this volume represents original research and considerable reinterpretation. Some subjects, such as the sail-assisted steamer, have barely been addressed before, and so it represents a genuine step forward for our understanding of the development of the ship of this period.
Lavishly illustrated, this informative volume, the fifth in a series, includes over 80 black-and-white photos, 130 illustrations, and over 20 tables.

I am a great lakes shipwreck diver who is interested in understanding the history of the ships I dive on. I am also a mechanical engineer. This book presents a lot of details on the technology of steam ships as well as the economic imperatives that drove that technology. While great lakes shipping is not specifically touched on in this volume, much of the designs and equipment made their way on to the ships of the inland seas. It provides a compact, but detailed overview with lots of excellent illustrations and pictures.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for any Historian .......2003-09-30

It says much for the sport of Scuba Diving that I remain as excited about my diving as did on that day when I first plunged into the wintry waters of Strangford Lough over 26 years ago. When not underwater, however, one of the most exciting and pleasing aspects of being a "Professional Underwater Photo-Journalist," is researching the many shipwrecks available to Scuba Divers throughout the world. A single good shipwreck can change the economic fortunes of either a small Caribbean country or improve those of a more wealthy country on the other side of the globe. Not only that, I just enjoy telling their stories.

A wreck-dive is, of course, much more than an ever-deteriorating pile of metal found underwater. This is a dive with a tale to tell and is often a brush with history. After all, apart from a few famous ships, very few historic vessels are ever preserved - so it is only underwater we get to see that which remains.

Conway Maritime Press are a leading authority on ships and several of their now out-of-print books have provided me with sources of reference for many years. I only wish I had come across this particular book before today.

"The Advent of Steam - The Merchant Steamship before 1900" is the fifth title in an ambitious programme of twelve books and measures approx. 12" x 10". The book is a limited edition of 2000 copies and is hard back. The list of contributors is impressive in itself - especially as they are headed by none other than Dr Basil Greenhill - former Director of the National Maritime Museum.

As one would expect from a book with such impeccable credentials, it is extremely well researched and well put together. Easy to say, I know, but this is evidenced by a continual cross-reference to their own sources coupled with the reproduction of a great many historic photographs, diagrams and cross-sections of various ships and machinery - all of which bear testament to the painstaking work that has gone into checking and double checking every single entry.

As the title suggests, this is a book about that fascinating time when the ship evolved from sail to steam power. It is about the people who made this possible and their designs. Many of the vessels were the leading-edge technology of the day - either because of their hull design or the revolutionary (no pun intended.) machinery installed within.

There are, of course, far too many ships to mention by name here - but several are of particular interest to the Scuba Diver, not least of which are the Carnatic, Royal Charter and Orinoco - to name but three.

This is an immensely readable book and one that is a "must" for any serious historian - be they amateur or professional, but get in quick - it is a limited edition and copies are selling fast.

This book is the first to illustrate with color photographs all Puerto Rico's breeding birds and common migrants. Over 300 color photos of 181 species of Puerto Rican birds appear in this publication. The English-language text is designed for tourists, students, teachers, and anyone who wants to understand Puerto Rico's natural heritage by learning about its fascinating birds. The species' life histories are written in a non-technical style for the general reader, and include important lessons for conservation of our natural resources. Most common birds of the Virgin Islands and northern Lesser Antilles are also illustrated. The book comes with a CD-ROM with detailed Spanish and English life history accounts and bibliography for 350 species, plus audio clips and over 1,250 photos. The CD-ROM is written in HTML which is easy to read without special installation on a PC or Mac, and makes files accessible for student projects in biology, geography, music and art. Over 80 professional and amateur ornithologists from Puerto Rico and the mainland USA collaborated in this effort.

                                5 out of 5 stars Excelente.......2007-05-13

                                5 out of 5 stars Good Guide.......2006-03-03

I am going to Puerto Rico for a vacation. This book will help me to identify the birds that i might see.
Since it is small it is easy to carry around with you. I think that nature lovers would enjoy it. I give it a hearty recommendation

                                5 out of 5 stars A Very Good Guide.......2006-02-21

This guide to Puerto Rico's birds is really quite strong and useful, especially when combined with the information on the included CD (which is well organized in both English and Spanish.) Who wouldn't love to just sit at their computer all day and listen to birdsong, at least when they can't be out in the mountains or mangroves of PR?? I found the photographs quite satisfactory for ID purposes (not something to be taken lightly) and the narrative information is very useful.

Just one nit to pick: why is the peregrine falcon described as "a small hawk"?

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Guide when birding in Puerto Rico.......2001-05-31

This is the perfect guide book for birding in Puerto Rico. The photographs, 1340 in all, are brilliant, and the text is detailed and rich in information. The guide itself will easily fit into a pocket or day pack and so when out in the field you will have it at your fingertips.

What's unique about this guide is the excellent CD-Rom that comes with it -- this will help you before you go to know what the birds look like, their calls, their behavior and where you can find them once in Puerto Rico. I used the CD-Rom to check out three of my favorite PR birds and was amazed at the numerous and gorgeous pictures, the superb quality of the audio recordings and the information Oberle has reproduced in this book. For instance, regarding the Puerto Rican Tody (one of the 17 PR endemics covered in this guide as well as over 320 other birds), there were a dozen different pictures of the Tody including fabulous close-ups. The information Oberle gives includes identification, voice with audio, habitat, habits, range, status and conservation, taxonomy and related books and articles about the Tody. The Tody is a tiny forest bird with emerald green upperparts and a bright red bill and throat -- everytime I see one I think of a Christmas tree ornament, they are so cute! Oberle discusses in detail what they eat: katydids, grasshoppers, earwings and dragonflies, and discusses as well their foraging techniques. Because Oberle goes into such great detail about ID and habitat/habits, I think this is the best guide to enable one to actually find the birds once in PR.

I also checked out the PR Woodpecker and found those pictures, audio and habitat/habits information just as extensive as that about the Tody. I learned that the woodpecker's stiff tail feathers helps it to gain balance while chiseling at tree bark to find its favorite insects, including earwings, beetle larvae and ants. I discovered it occasionally eats scorpions and and lizards! Oberle informs the reader that a good place to find the woodpecker is around the parking lot of the El Portal visitor Center at the El Yungue national park.

A third bird that is well covered in both the CD and guide is the Pin-tailed Whydah, which has a most remarkable long tail and perches on wires and branches. I was surprised to learn that the female is like our parasitic cowbird and doesn't build her own nest but drops her eggs in other birds' nests.

Oberle has done a splendid job of bringing together in a compact book all the information and photgraphs of birds that you will need when out in the field. Because he cares so much about these birds and the environment, he also has special sections at the begining of the book on conservation efforts, migratory birds that winter in PR, and the extinction issues that face too many birds and other wildlife today in Puerto Rico and elsewhere.

To anyone going to Puerto Rico who plans to do some birding, I heartily recommend this book and CD-Rom to you.

5 out of 5 stars Puerto Rico's Best Bird Guide.......2001-05-21

This guide is fantastic! It is well organized, easy to use, full of concise, carefully planned information, and absolutely the best bird book I've ever seen. The photos are extremely well done and very helpful. The descriptions are outstanding: accurate, thorough, and interesting. I have many bird-watchers and long time Audubon members staying here at Villas Margarita, not far from the Caribbean National Forest. They all rave about this book and the fine job Mark Oberle did on it. It is worth every penny! Buy it!
