      Book Description

Exploring the range of possibilities available with infrared film, which responds to light beyond the visible spectrum, this book presents advanced techniques for capturing impressive images. Beginning with an overview of the basics of light, sensitivity, optics, and film handling, this book builds on introductory techniques to teach photographers how to visualize the effect of infrared film on their subjects. The final step of creating infrared images takes the photographer into the darkroom, where topics include reducing or enhancing grain, improving shadow detail, and altering contrast.

3 out of 5 stars Great Book But Not Much New Information.......2006-03-16

The author has an excellent infrared photography book, however it is not much different from her first book which I also have. Either of these books are great, but there is not much need to own both.

2 out of 5 stars The word Advanced means introduction in this book.......2002-09-24

The book is short, deals only with Black & white, no mention of E6 Infra red material. It is written in a large font with 1.5 lines spacing, It also has lots of Photos to bulk it up.
It is a good introduction but don't expect anything too technical or advanced.

It takes around 3 Hours to read from Cover to Cover. From that i gained 3 facts 1) Agfa make a IR Film; no sample photographs just the mention it is only availabe in selected areas. 2)The Waston Master based on Selenium is better than meters based on Silicon Blue Cells, but of course braket your exposures. 3) You can check a digtal camera for IR sensitivity by looking at a tv remote control on the LCD display, as the remote is operated. There were no samples of IR pictures taken with digital Cameras.

The book was well laid out & was very readable but was in no way advanced or technical.

The development section was weak. I would have expected the writer own methods to be discussed & suggestions for different temes/temperatures/dilutions to have be done. The problem of the weak image was ignored, often you get a weak image with IR photography:- poor metering, poor development, wrong IR Filter.
The Section on lighting for portaits was far too long, & could have being replaced in part with a section on E6 IR Photograhy or a history of IR photography or Digital IR photography, or with a piece on skin colour & IR. Hard lighting on Kodak HS vs Ilford SFX200, vs Konica 750nm, is okay but in an Advanced book you are not expecting compleate chapters missing.

If you buy this book as a advanced text you will want another book, buts its okay as an introduction.

5 out of 5 stars What an excellent book.......2001-12-06

In thi book Laurie White rounds up what she started in her first one. It is pretty technical and for someone like me it is grate. I didn't find a nother place with this much information on this film. She also shows color pictures so one can learn to see infrared in diferent scenes. Really helpful

1 out of 5 stars NOT WORTH THE TIME OR MONEY.......2001-09-07

Very big disappointment! This text offers nothing new or advanced that isn't covered in other, better texts on infrared photography. The photos that illustrate the book are pedestrian and misleading at best. Not a very good effort in writing or shooting at all.Steer clear of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Taking the guess work out of IR photography.......2001-09-03

This book goes well beyond her previous book in explaining why
and how IR photography works. If you want to shoot IR, even
if you are well experienced, you will still learn a lot from
      this book.

5 out of 5 stars You want to be the Damn Kid.......2004-06-24

Honestly, if you haven't bought this book then you are missing out on one of the funniest things that the WWW has ever had gracing it's user interface.

This book is a collection of comic strips that Owen Dunn has produced as part of his web commic conveniently located at http://www.youdamnkid.com/ as part of the Keenspot network. It is a fairly quick read - I managed to get through the whole book in a little under 30 minutes, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in punch.

It may not save your soul, but it will give it a great big laugh.

5 out of 5 stars Clippy Clappy Cling Clong.......2004-05-16

The title might have thrown you off, but you would understand it if you have read Owen Dunne's book, You Damn Kid.

YDK is about a family growing up in the `good old days' (about 1960s), and it is set around "The Kid" who is our protagonist. Live through the days when you had to go to a Catholic school taught by nuns, as well of days of sweet innocence and naiveté. Throughout the comic strips, "The Kid" runs into fascinating people such as the cantankerous Sister Margaret, the drunken Aunt Claire, and the retarded kid Jethro.

Owen Dunne has been drawing comics for his website since 1999, and he brings up some very interesting questions. Questions like "how things would be different if Jesus was a woman" and "why can't I say I'm sorry with my middle finger" and "If Jesus came back, what would he be?"

Unfortunately, like Sinfest, YDK probably will not be syndicated, due to the fact that there is some brief nudity in some strips, as well as situations that kids nowadays simply won't understand. Situations like the kid being killed in a bizarre petting zoo incident and when "The Kid" had an arm cast with naughty things written on it. The newspapers are too scared to print anything dealing with religion or sex, and Owen Dunne has a few strips about those subjects.

So buy a copy of this book and laugh. These strips are funny, insightful, and serious (at times), and maybe you would learn a thing or two.

                  Book Description

How do you explain to a 10-year-old why his mother can't play with him like she used to? What can you say to make a 6-year-old understand why her mother goes to the doctor so often? With over 4 million Americans infected with hepatitis C, a large number are parents who ask themselves these questions everyday. Now the bestselling authors of Living With Hepatitis C: A Survivor's Guide have joined forces with an early childhood specialist to answer these questions in a new book entitled My Mom Has Hepatitis C. An easy to understand story filled with 25 beautiful watercolor drawings, this book is the perfect way for parents and children to share information and feelings. My Mom Has Hepatitis C centers around Mom's discovery that she has the hepatitis C virus, how she tells her son and daughter, their trips to the doctor and Mom's treatments. It ends when Mom finally goes into remission. The book also includes a straightforward and simple glossary of terms along with a list of recommended readings.

                  Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Helps children understand their parent's Hepatitis C.......2005-01-09

When an adult gets Hepatitis C, the symptoms are often vague. Tiredness, irritability, and mood changes are more difficult to explain than something concrete and visible like a broken leg. Sometimes the treatments make the parent more depressed. In the absence of good understanding, the child may blame herself or her parent.

This book describes a young girl whose mother has Hepatitis C. The story is clear and straightforward. It does a good job of explaining the illness and showing that the mother loves her child even when she is feeling ill. However, the plot is fairly plain, and the characters do not come alive.

I have recommended this book to mothers and fathers who are dealing with hepatitis C.

                  5 out of 5 stars serves a real need.......2000-09-25

It is a great book. Touching, real, and affirmative.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful and Much Needed Resource.......2000-06-28

Hedy Weinberg, Shira Shump, and Dr. Everson have done a wonderful job with a very difficult subject to address with children.

I think this book is a wonderful and much needed resource for helping adults explain hepatitis C in terms that children can understand.

                  Book Description

With Blood Image, Paul Anderson shows that the symbol of a man can be just as important as the man himself. Turner Ashby was one of the most famous fighting men of the Civil War. Rising to colonel of the 7th Virginia Cavalry, Ashby fought brilliantly under Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson during the 1862 Shenandoah Valley campaign until he died in battle. Anderson demonstrates that Ashby's image—a catalytic, mesmerizing, and often contradictory combination of southern antebellum cultural ideals and wartime hopes and fears—emerged during his own lifetime and was not a later creation of the Lost Cause. The stylistic synergy of Anderson's startling narrative design fuels a poignant irony: men like Ashby—a chivalrous, charismatic "knight" who had difficulty complying with Stonewall Jackson's authority—become trapped by the desire to have their real lives reflect their imagined ones.

AUTHOR BIO: Paul Christopher Anderson is an associate professor of history and Alumni Master Teacher at Clemson University.

                  4 out of 5 stars Blood Image.......2002-08-07

Blood Image is a story of mentalities, not a biography, as the introduction and even the title make clear.

Anderson presents an interesting study of Southern mentalities, ideals of chivalry and honor (with a fascinating aside on horses), and how Turner Ashby, as both chivalric and violent, provided his supporters with a vital image with which to construct their wartime behavior.

Occasionally Anderson's prose is not as lucid as it might be, and he doesn't distinguish Ashby's supporters demographically as clearly as I wish he had. Coming from the Shenandoah Valley area as they did, one imagines that some of his followers were really from the mountains: did they share images of chivalry? In addition, I'd have liked to see more quotes from the irregular cavalrymen who presumably made up most of the supporters Anderson is studying.

Overall, I found this to be an interesting, if not flawless, study of mentalities, and a unique addition to Civil War scholarship. Anderson's descriptions of Ashby's personal experiences are especially vivid.

2 out of 5 stars Turner Ashby- Blood Image.......2002-04-02

I rated this book very low as I was looking for a new book on a relative sparce topic Gen. Turner Ashby. I thought the book went into detail about the social "southern attitude" before the Civil War. I wish it had more "Turner Ashby" and less social commentary. I also didn't see anything new in the book, mostly
quoted "Avirett" who still appears to have written the best book
of Gen. Turner Ashby. I would like to see a writer take on the
project of doing a updated biography of 'Ashby" as he was a very
unique officer in the "Civil War. This book "Blood Image" did not
                  do that.

                      - Compliments to a Norcal birding field guide
                      Found it very handy
                      Areas to improve
                      - Verbose format could be improved and turned more concise (tables, possibly more thumbnails and less free text) with possibly better indexing of birds vs spots to find them.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book to Plan For Bird Trips.......2006-03-01

This book was better than what I had expected. I am getting ready to order several more for birding friends. I was not under the impression that is was an identification guide when I first bought the book and it isn't. But, it does tell me what to study before I travel to the very descriptive destinations.

I cannot wait for the weekend to try birding in another area close to home.

Thank-you John Kemper for a thorough guide book.

4 out of 5 stars Not an ideal reference or field guide.......2003-01-12

I've used the guide to help plan three birding trips so far and found it to be an asset in preparing for the trip (e.g., understanding the location, what species to expect, and best time to go). Upon arrival at the site, I found myself using a field guide like NGS's Field Guide to Birds of North America almost exclusively to help sight and identify the birds.

Birding Northern California is not suitable as a true field guide since it lacks detailed graphics or photos of the close to 600 species that can be found here. While using the book, I also found the book to be "too wordy" to use as a reference. For instance, to find the best location in Northern California to view a Ross's Goose in December, you would need to browse a good chunk of the book before finding a spot (and it might not be the best location). Later I discovered handy reference information in the very back of the text (e.g., Chapter 7 provides a breakdown of "specialty birds" throughout the area with their respective ranges mapped for winter and summer). FYI - the Ross's Goose is included in Chapter 7 with the key sites. The last chapter of the book provides a complete listing, including specialty and more common birds, with a geographic region and month of the year to look for the bird.

Given the room for improvement in the book's organization, I would encourage the publisher/author to produce a 2nd edition. The ideal improvement would be to include a CDROM that structures the information by bird species (hey, a photo would be nice), the locations where the bird can be found with a relative ranking, the time of year (again with some form of ranking). Including a CD would also allow the reader to search over the information by species or location.

I ordered this for use in my daughter's 6th grade science class in Oakland. Unfortunately, it contains no photographs of the birds--only text descriptions of viewing locations. So it's not useful as an identification guide. The general description should clearly state this. JM

5 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive guide to birding northern California........1999-05-28

With the passion of a life-long birder and the precision of a former professor of engineering, John Kemper has written an exceptional, new site guide for northern California. Detailed information is given for 81 major locations from the Oregon border through Monterey, King, and Tulare counties plus the Kern River Valley in Kern County; Mono County and the White Mountains are included on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada

The book focuses on species of interest by listing "specialty birds" and "other key birds" at the beginning of each location description. Specialty birds include uncommon to abundant birds found primarily in the western United States, endangered or threatened species, and rare birds if the site is among the best for the bird. The text describes when, where, and how to the find the birds at each site, and this information was personally verified by John during two years of fieldwork preparing the book. Range maps and bar charts at the back of the book are cross-referenced to the best sites for each species and the time of year when each species occurs in different regions of the state. Readers will appreciate the easily readable, detailed maps and the clearly written site descriptions. Novices, long-time California birders, and birders from out of state planning their first or 100th trip to the state, will find the information needed to find the birds of interest to them and to plan successful birding trips.
