Book Description

In the decade preceding his untimely death, Frederic Remington (1861-1909) produced a series of paintings that took as their subject the color of night. This richly illustrated volume is the first to present all of these works--some seventy paintings that secured for Remington the critical acclaim he so coveted. Indeed, these magnificent nocturnes marked an important new direction for the celebrated illustrator, writer, and sculptor of America's vanishing frontier.

In these deeply personal works, Remington explored the technical and aesthetic difficulties of painting darkness. Surprisingly, his images are filled with color and light--moonlight, firelight, candlelight. Focused on the subject the artist had made his own--the American West--these paintings reflect Remington's dramatic reworking of the narrative tradition as well as the spare modernism of his late work.

Frederic Remington: The Color of Night, accompanying the first exhibition devoted to the nocturnes, includes three insightful essays discussing Remington's nocturnes within the literary, historical, aesthetic, and technological context of his time. The nocturnes do much more than document a night that was rapidly disappearing under bright, newly installed electric lights. They also reveal how this son of a Civil War hero moved from burnishing Theodore Roosevelt's rough riding heroics in Cuba to exploring, like Stephen Crane and Ernest Hemingway, his own soul-searing war experience, and, like Joseph Conrad, to probing America's own heart of darkness.

As the definitive resource on Remington's nocturnes, this volume pairs large reproductions of these stunning paintings--including newly conserved works and others not seen publicly since the artist's death--with commentary from his personal diaries and letters and from contemporary critics.

5 out of 5 stars Complete and detailed.......2003-12-30

This book is divided in parts.
In the first part you will find the biography of Remington and all his artwork
In the second, there are all the "The color of the night" paintings in big size with the description of each one.
As a bonus, there is a brief study of the technique that used Remington to paint these great paintings.
Great book about a great artist.

    3 out of 5 stars although dated..........2004-11-13

although a little dated, this book by Spencer Drate, Thomas Olejar and Sean Mosher-Smith gives a pretty good snapshot of the stae of the web in the late 90's, their are plenty of newer books on web design out there that are not as design heavy but its interesting to look back for nostalgia sake

1 out of 5 stars Useless Web Related Book.......2003-11-26

Note the subtitle: award winning web site DESIGNERS, not designs. This is a compilation of graphics from a short list of web site design firms. No actual web site is presented in its entirety. The fact that these graphics originate from web pages is irrelevant in this book. The book strives to be artsy in itself, splattering a hodge-podge of non-sequitor images across each section prefaced by meaningless musings from a web designer. Even worse, many of the graphics are distorted and difficult to view. This is not a good source of web graphic ideas. Better ideas are available on the Internet for free.

1 out of 5 stars Artistic But Not Usable.......2001-12-02

Like most of the websites described in the book, this book isn't very usable because it's trying so hard to be "artistic." The screen shots are blurry and the text and graphics are combined in such a way that it makes it difficult to read.

I could forgive the author if content was good, but it's not. Most of the websites that are described aren't usable in the real world. The use of frames, Flash and poor navigation is the norm throughout. All of which should be avoided when developing a website in most cases.

I bought this book for inspiration and it didn't inspire even one idea. If you're a web designer looking for inspiration, you might consider The Web Design Wow Book or The Big Book of Ideas. I use both books regularly to jump start the creative process.

    Best Regards, Bill

    5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2000-11-03

I've been tired (with) "web designing books", always with the same pictures and sites reviewed (and the same boring text). This book is different; not only the work inside is really great, but it has some content other books on this field forget to have. Some of the text on this book is really worth (like the foreword by Manabu Inada), and the rest of the text is not a bunch of "this is the design company, and they are great".

4 out of 5 stars Very Fresh and Cyber Feel.......2000-04-21

It's hard to find a WebArt book in the market. Web Art provides many new inspiration, ideas and examples for professional Web Designer. If you a Web Designer, you should COLLECT this book.

However, there is no teaching tutorial in the book. It just collects all good web page layout.

      4 out of 5 stars Different. Large single-frame editorial-style cartoons........1997-11-14

This book is different from the other Garfield cartoon books: instead of strips, this book contains large single-frame cartoons. They are done in a style similar to that of an editorial cartoon in a newspaper (sight gags, etc.). When I was 13 years old and bought this book, I was surprised. It wasn't what I expected, but I liked it anyway. To my knowledge, the cartoons in this book are all original: they have not been previously published in newspapers, unlike the Garfield cartoon strips. Funny cartoons I remember from this book: * Garfield with his head down in disbelief after reading the morning paper: "Dogs Given Vote" * Garfield holding up a sign saying "Unfair To Cats", protesting a carnival game (the one where people throw balls at plates that look like cats). * "Ancient Egyptian Mode Of Transportation For Cats"... I remember showing this one to my history teacher in junior high school at the time, she laughed out loud :-) JoSH krellan@fix.net

The book has plenty of buzzwords and high level discussion. But it doesn't seem to get down to substantive details. Perhaps this is an unavoidable feature of the topic. But I found the claims that Information Technology can enable new business models to be unsatisfactory.

Sure, IT can give rise to a geographically dispersed organisation, coordinating its efforts via the Internet. This has been discussed elsewhere, at least ever since the browsers came out, ten years ago. But models beyond that? Lots of handwaving.

4 out of 5 stars Tons of practical information.......2002-08-26

I am planning to sell my house soon and I got about a dozen books on the subject. This one was the best of the bunch (second, believe it or not, was the "Dummies" book!). There is very basic info (curb appeal, etc.) but also some excellent practical advice on timing, how to negotiate the sale, when to bend and when to hold firm. There may be a better book out there on the topic, but I haven't come across it.

Irwin has written numerous books on various aspects of real estate and he has a very good reputation for providing top-notch information and advice.

5 out of 5 stars lots of useful information.......2002-01-28

This was probably the best of the 5 or so books I consulted. Not sure where the reviewer below is coming from; while the basics were covered, there were a number of savvy and sophisticated tips that would not occur to a first-time seller and that I did not see elsewhere. Chapters 6-10, on negotiations, were particularly useful.

          1 out of 5 stars bad advice???????.......2001-08-12

another waste of time. dont buy this book unless you are totally new to real estate.I dont return books as a practice but i am returning both books by this authur.I am a professional invester there are good books these are not them.

              Book Description

Less a single visual approach than an attitude toward design, the romantic style satisfies our desire for rooms that we and those we love will find pleasurable. Homes decorated in the romantic style range from delightfully casual disorder to elaborate stagings of domestic theater. Whether whimsically enchanted or elegantly restrained, they beckon with the promise of comfort. Warmly lit and dressed in alluring fabrics, they soothe the spirit and tantalize the eye. Unconventional, unrestricted by tradition, and not limited to one historical period or particular geography, the romantic style draws upon many varied tastes and cultural influences. It marries, for example, the femininity of Victorian fashion with the charm of country French or the glamour of Art Deco with the exoticism of the Orient. In the Romantic Style shows how to transform simple, everyday rooms into objects of desire and how, even without an aristocratic purse, it is possible to make romantic rooms out of majestic dreams. It explores the history of romantic design and describes in informative detail how curtains can soften an interior, details can entice the eye, and finishes can make rooms more seductive. 149 color photographs and illustrations.

                Book Description

Much has been written on World War I, but few books focus solely on America's involvement in the war as successfully as Robert H. Zieger. In America's Great War, Zieger concentrates his attention on five broad themes that affected Americans: Woodrow Wilson's role in shaping world order; America's familial connection to Europe; the complicated relationship between the wartime experience and the Progressive Era; race; and the emergence of the National Security State.

5 out of 5 stars A Concise History of WW I.......2007-06-01

This book was written to educate a general audience. The 'Foreword' says Woodrow Wilson's advice of self-determination, universal human rights, and an international organization to prevent future wars failed. But this merely shows Wilson's flawed thinking. Class and sectional differences make politics, and competitive trade leads to war. If one country seeks more colonies or hegemony it can only do so by attacking the countries with colonies or hegemony. There's no secret there. Wilson was a skilled rhetorician but talk cannot resolve economic rivalry when one country refuses to hand over its long-held powers. Once America began to supply the Allies for money they soon needed to guarantee an Allied victory (p.viii). The 'Chronology' fails to list the San Francisco Preparedness Day bombing in 1916, or the German Revolts in November 1918. The 'Introduction' says the Great War enhanced the "national security" government with new laws and powers to control and limit the thinking of people. These powers led to the end of political renewal (third parties) and the fossilization of the two-party system, more firmly controlled by corporations (p.3). The origins of the National Security State was based on "domestic corporate hegemony" (p.18). The American economy in 1914 had the worst depression since the 1890s, and prosperity resulted from sales to Europe (p.11).

Britain placed minefields to bottle up the German fleets in the Baltic and North Seas. But submarines could evade minefields and sink British battle cruisers. Vulnerable U-boats learned they could only win by attacking without warning (p.13). The crisis of the Lusitania sinking was the German answer to the British blockade (p.23). Germany agreed to abandon unannounced attacks on merchant shipping; and began to produce more U-boats (p.25)! The Great War turned America from a debtor to a creditor nation, and began to sell and invest in colonial countries (p.31). The "preparedness" movement attempted to increase the power of the wealthy over wage earners (pp.33-34). Zieger wonders why Wilson asked for war in 1917 and not earlier (p.54)? At this time America would get the benefits of an Allied victory at the lowest cost. The Wilson administration chose borrowing rather than taxation to finance the war (p.75). This caused inflation (p.76). The income tax became the main source of funds (p.77).

Chapter 3 discusses the stories that were created to sell "the war to end war" to a fractious nation. The armed forces provided a test laboratory for experiments in social control (p.90). America kept its army independent and not as replacement troops for failed Allied military strategy (p.93). American troops won the war in July 1918 (p.98). French medical services were much worse (p.108). "Shell shock" was a new disease (p.110). US Navy destroyers attacked submarines and protected troopships (p.113). Chapter 5 tells about domestic events during the war, the effects on class, race, and gender (p.151). Chapter 6 covers the postwar peace conferences. Wilson's personal outlook is described (p.155). It was "idealistic" and ignored the realities of the world (p.156). Foreign markets would solve the problem of the economy (p.157)! The Armistice allowed the German government to put down revolts (p.161). There were other political considerations. The Fourteen Points was a response to the Bolshevik publication of secret treaties (p.163). Were Wilson's actions the result of pride and arrogance (p.167)? The defeat of Germany was followed by conflicting Allied policies (pp.171-175).

Chapter 7 tells of the events in Postwar America. The Bolshevik Revolution had effects in America, even without the economic turmoil. Illegal violence occurred (p.197). The Sedition Act nullified parts of the Bill of Rights. How could the high-minded Wilson government be so repressive (p.198)? This chapter has the history that is usually censored from popular literature (p.208). Henry Cabot Lodge explained his view of Wilson (p.217). The critics of Article 10 were correct, then or now (pp.220-221). Wilson's physical problems caused the rejection of the Treaty (p.224). When the United States joined the United Nations in 1945 it followed the spirit of the Lodge reservations. Chapter 8 has a final look at the questions (p.229).

4 out of 5 stars The Political Context of WWI: For the serious reader only.......2001-03-20

If you are the serious reader, historian or educator looking for the political context of WWI, then grab this book. You will read about the Wilsonian politics of non intervention and his arrogant moral & ethical justification of our participation with an ultimate goal of a new world order.

There is lengthy discussion of labor strife, discrimination of minorities and propaganda at home. The economics of war in a changing world according to Keynes is also given some attention. Unschooled readers will be interested in reading about the Alien & Sedition Act, and how the U.S. government responded through law enforcement. Here, J. Edgar Hoover is introduced as the director of the precursor of the FBI.

The last chapter contains an excellent list of political questions to be answered by historians like who is to blame for the failure of the Treaty of Versailles
