    Book Description

Burgundy came into its own during the Middle Ages, with the flourishing of the Catholic Church, and more specifically under the Benedictine order of Cluny. These monks were renowned for their religious enthusiasm, work ethic, spartan lifestyle, and adherence to physically exhausting hard labor. This philosophy apparently led to the Cistercians' decision to cultivate the poor, infertile, rocky soil of what today is known as the Côte d'Or.
From the introduction by Robert M. Parker, Jr.

The Heart of Burgundy focuses a wide lens on a little region in the French countryside Burgundy begins about seventy-five miles south of Paris and stretches down through the Côte d'Or, Côte Chalonnaise, Mâconnais, and Beaujolais in a skinny and wavy line more than two hundred miles long. The decision by the Cistercians to cultivate its soil, which Robert Parker mentions above, was a monumental one, for today the chief products of Burgundy are Pinot Noir, Beaujolais, Chablis, and Pouilly-Fuissé, and it is home to one of the most famous vineyards in the world, the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. While the Burgundy region is not the largest in acreage, or even in wine production, its yearly wine auction held at the Hospices de Beaune is an indication of where prices will be set for France's entire vintage. That means that at a certain time of year all of France, indeed all the world, can become fixated on this otherwise sleepy agricultural area.

Because it stretches north to south, Burgundy is one of the most eclectic regions in terms of climate and terrain, providing Andy Katz with many interesting and beautiful photo opportunities. The emphasis of the photos in The Heart of Burgundy is not only on the grapes, vines, and vineyards but also on the unique and beautiful land that produces the wine and the culture from which it stems. The landscape and light, which are full of variety and seem to constantly shift and change, are two of the more alluring factors of this region, and these are fully illustrated in Andy Katz's photographs, with their brilliant clarity, vibrant color, and depth of focus.

To round out this view of Burgundy, Robert M. Parker, Jr., contributes an introduction to the region that only someone with his level of experience could. As author and publisher of The Wine Advocate, he has been exploring the wine country of France for twenty years, visiting each château and domaine, drinking in the wine, culture, and landscape. He understands the unpredictably harsh weather of Burgundy, the clay/lime stone soil that runs through the pastoral, rolling hills, and the identity and character of the people and their wines. Together, in words and pictures, Parker and Katz demonstrate an understanding of the heart of Burgundy and celebrate the beauty of the French countryside.

Readers who enjoy fine photography will appreciate the creatively composed and highly crafted photographs from the Burgundy region. Some viewers may find that the page binding cuts in double page prints tend to diminish the quality of those shots. As art should be, the subjects are personal selections of the photographer. The subjects tend to center on vines, leaves, and related compositions. Similarly, the brief introduction (five pages) outlines geological and political factors which influenced the vineyards of Burgundy. Potential travelers to Burgundy will not find this book especially informative and will do well to seek guide books for the region. Likewise, persons seeking information about the wines of Burgundy will do well to seek a reference on specifics of wines and vineyards. This rather is a book for visual entertainment.

This book functions well as an introduction to the internet. Having a lot of web and internet experience myself, I hungered for more insider tips earlier on in the book. I liked the list of search engines in Skill 5 that talked about how to best use each one. I can see this as being a good reference that will sit on a shelf in my office.

      Book Description

Set in England’s legendary Peak District, Stephen Booth’s acclaimed mysteries tell tales of men and women under siege by both ordinary life and extraordinary crime. Now, in a stunning, fascinatingly intelligent novel, Booth’s uneasy young policeman, Ben Cooper, encounters an enigma that begins with a shocking murder and a victim’s . . . One Last Breath

Around the ancient cave system in Derbyshire are thronging tourists, a medieval castle, and the thriving town of Castleton. With its underground tunnels and caverns, it’s the perfect place for a man to hide–or vanish. Detective Constable Ben Cooper and Detective Sergeant Diane Fry are looking for such a man, one who is on a rampage of revenge.

After thirteen years in prison, Mansell Quinn has emerged a man enraged. Hours after violating his parole, Quinn is the chief suspect in a fresh murder. And his original sin–the brutal killing of his lover–still haunts the valley. Because Quinn has always maintained his innocence, the people who lined up against him then are in dire danger now.

Ben may be one of those people, for he is the son of the cop who had arrested Quinn thirteen years earlier. But while his department races to find Quinn, Ben wonders if the man was indeed guilty of the first crime. Even when another new victim is found, Ben stubbornly clings to the old case–and makes himself an open target for a killer.

For Ben, the real story of Mansell Quinn is as hidden as the caves beneath them. His search for answers will lead him on a twisting, harrowing journey through that maze of darkness–into the shocking light of truth.

      5 out of 5 stars Psychological Thriller.......2007-09-10

A newspaper and magazine journalist for over 25 years, Stephen Booth was born in the English Pennine town of Burnley. He was brought up on the coast at Blackpool, where he began his career in journalism by editing his school magazine and wrote his first 'novel' at the age of 13.

Stephen gave up journalism in 2001 to write crime novels full time. He and his wife Lesley live in a former Georgian dower house near Retford, Nottinghamshire, in Robin Hood country.

The Peak District has always been a major attraction for tourists, but this particular summer a convicted killer with one thing on his mind, revenge. Fourteen long years ago Mansell Quinn was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his lover.

Now he is out of prison, under licence. The problem is nobody knows where he is and his ex-wife has been murdered. As they try to get a picture of where Quinn might be and what his next move will be detectives Ben Cooper and Diane Fry become increasingly frustrated and puzzled by the case. There are too many anomalies to the case, not least the fact that two of his friends refused to back up his alibi and for the last ten years of his sentence, not a soul visited him in jail There is a lot more to this case than meets the eye, but at the moment the pair are getting nowhere.

      2 out of 5 stars Oh dear...........2007-06-01

Well....I seem to be the odd one out here. I'm struggling to think of anything I truly enjoyed about this novel, as I found it rather boring, lacking in almost any form of credibility and full of uninteresting characters. It's my first try at Stephen Booth and it will be my last. On the positive side I would say that it was well constructed and consistent, but the problem was that I was less than halfway through when I realised that while I could not guess at the exact outcome, I didn't really care! The repeated references to 'one last breath' became slightly irritating, and I felt that the story could have been told in half as many pages and achieved no less an impact even for those who clearly enjoyed it. I read constantly, and in recent months have finished works by Ian Rankin, Mark Billingham, Harlan Coben, the excellent Val McDermid, Jeffery Deaver, Carlene Thompson and P.J.Tracy - but when I consider the subject matter of One Last Breath, while I recognise it has a certain style, I consider the entertainment level to be below that generated by writers such as (dare I say this?) Dan Brown, characterisations inferior to the likes of McDermid and Rankin, imagery of violence weaker than Deaver or Billingham, and overall pacing to be sluggish, unlike Coben for example. Probably of more interest to geologists than theologists, and maybe to those who seek a change from big-city style thrillers.

4 out of 5 stars Compelling Thriller .......2006-09-01

Mansell Quinn is released is released from prison fourteen years after having been convicted of killing his lover. His lover was killed in his house while his wife was at work. His memory is foggy; vague images of blood and his lover's last breath crowd his mind. He felt his must have done it, but while in the middle of his sentence he started to proclaim his innocence. The fact that all of a sudden he was denying his crime made the parole board decide to have him serve his full sentence. Now that he is out, his wife is found dead. Detective Sergent Diane Fry and Detective Constable Ben Cooper investigate a case that is deeply entangled in the past.

My favorite Brit Crime Fic author is Peter Robinson. Stephen Booth has a bit of a way to go before I would consider him the same caliber, but he's got the elements to be a very fine storyteller: atmospheric setting, multidimensional characters and an well-developed, suspenseful plot. Where he falters a bit is when plot points don't get resolved or they are resolved, but don't make much sense. I still don't understand why Rebecca was killed, and more importantly, I am unclear on who killed her. Maybe I missed it, but a reader should really be able to miss the resolution of a major story line. The plot should be more concise and not meander loosing part of the audience. I did like the story, and I was engaged during reading it. I don't think my mind wandered once, so I was a little perturbed when I still had questions at the end.

I did really love how the Peak District was brought to life in the novel. An ancient underground cave became almost another character in the book. I did get a good sense of Derbyshire as a setting. It was not just a matter of saying a story is set in a location, and that is that.

While I did have a few issues with the story, I did enjoy it and do recommend reading it.

      3 1/2 Stars

      5 out of 5 stars Terrific.......2006-08-07

Each of the Ben Cooper series is better than the last--and that is saying something. Evoking the alien landscape of the Peak District and Speedwell Caves, Booth manages to make Cooper, and his relationship with his conflcted colleage, Diane Fry, as interesting as the slowly unraveling mystery.

4 out of 5 stars fine Peak District police procedural .......2006-08-02

In 1990 Castleton, Derbyshire, a drunken Mansell Quinn comes home from the pub only to hear the woman's last breath as she dies. He confesses and is arrested him for the brutal murder of his lover. However, he recants his declaration of guilt, but is still convicted and goes to prison.

Now over thirteen years later, Quinn is released from prison. Already known as a violent man before the homicide, he is a raging violent man with a grudge against those who sent him away. He almost immediately violates the conditions of his release, but the Peak District police cannot find him to pick him up. Instead the first person connected to Quinn, Rebecca Lowe, is murdered. While the police assume Quinn has begun avenging his "affront", Detective Constable Ben Cooper wonders if someone framed Quinn. Ben begins to look back at the case that his father solved thirteen years ago when he arrested Quinn and wonders if perhaps the culprit could be someone else then and now. As he obstinately digs for clues and tries to persuade Detective Sergeant Diane Fry that he is right and their superior DI Paul Hitchens is wrong, Ben comes to the attention of someone who wants him out of the way while Quinn hides in the caves near the tourist attractions.

The latest Peak District police procedural (see BLIND TO THE BONES) is a solid tale that starts off with a deep look at the potential antagonist and establishes who the key police participants are. The story line slows down a bit in the middle even though more die and the delightful English Peak District is vividly described, but then takes off again for an exhilarating climax. Throughout readers will wonder if Ben is right as the evidence points heavily towards Quinn in Stephen Booth's fine whodunit.

5 out of 5 stars enjoyable romantic suspense .......2007-09-29

Two years ago, former cheerleader and trophy wife Feenie Malone learned her husband Josh Garland was cheating so she divorced him. However, he swore in court he lost everything so she received little in the settlement as she and the judge believed him.

Currently, Feenie works as a reporter for the Mayfield Gazette. During an interview, she notices the boat that her former husband swore he lost in a poker game. She sneaks into the boathouse to take pictures of the vessel and him to use as evidence in court when she goes after this rat. However, she is stunned because with her ex is a known notorious drug operative. Feenie investigates, which leads her to private investigator Marco Juarez, a former cop; they met when he handled the domestic dispute that signaled the end of her marriage. He wants to ignore his instant déjà vu attraction because his priority is to learn what happened to his missing sister, Paloma, whom he assumes is dead. Besides which Feenie is linked to thugs, but he needs her if he is to achieve his goal. Soon someone begins murdering local citizens with Feenie near the top of the list to be eliminated.

ONE LAST BREATH is an enjoyable romantic suspense tale because of the wary interaction between the lead couple. 4 out of 5 stars A Good Read.......2007-09-25

I enjoyed this book more than I expected. The charaters were well thought out and not overdone. Feenie is not the typical woe-is-me heroine and Marco is just HOT. The story went at a nice pace and was enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars One Last Breath, but not the last book I'll read by Laura Griffin.......2007-09-22

Feenie Malone is broke, bitter and still feeling betrayed by her greedy, unfaithful ex-husband. While covering a fluff story for her South Texas paper, Feenie discovers that the boat her husband had "lost" in a poker game is still very much in his possession. That night, dressed all in black, she sneaks onto his property to take a covert photograph of the boat. It's a simple plan. Instead, Feenie gets manhandled to the ground and pitched into the lake by an unknown assailant. Suddenly she is thrown into the middle of an investigation that is far more dangerous than catching her lying, thieving ex-husband. Her main ally is Marco Juarez who mysteriously reappears in her life just when she needs him. If she can find out what Marco is hiding and keep her traitorous body from melting everytime she's around him, she just might survive.

Marco Juarez is a man on a mission and Feenie is the woman with the information he needs. He's given up everything to pursue Feenie's ex-husband, but how far is he willing to use her to get his revenge?

The characters in the book feel real and there are many minor characters that bring the small Texas town to life. Feenie is smart and resourceful, but definitely out of her comfort zone. Marco Juarez is a sexy, secretive hero, haunted by an unresolved past. His loyalty and love for his family and his fierce protection of Feenie will send alternating waves of warmth and heat through every female reader.

Laura Griffin has written a complex, romantic suspense that will keep readers turning the pages late into the night. The plot is well-developed with subtle red herrings and a large cast of characters that fit together in a smart, well-written suspense thriller.

                Book Description

The roots of American globalization can be seen in its participation in the War of 1898. Then, as today, the United States actively engaged in globalizing its economic order, its political institutions, and its values. Thomas Schoonover argues that this drive to expand political and cultural reach—the quest for wealth, missionary fulfillment, security, power, and prestige—was inherited by the United States from Europe, especially Spain and Great Britain.

Uncle Sam's War of 1898 and the Origins of Globalization is a pathbreaking work of history that examines U.S. growth from its early nationhood to its first major military conflict on the world stage, also known as the Spanish-American War. As the fledgling nation's military, industrial, and economic strength developed, the United States created policies designed to protect itself from challenges beyond its borders. According to Schoonover, a surge in U.S. activity in the Gulf-Caribbean and in Central America in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was catalyzed by the same avarice and competitiveness that motivated the European adventurers to seek a route to Asia centuries earlier.

Addressing the basic chronology and themes of the first century of the nation's expansion, Schoonover locates the origins of the U.S. goal of globalization. U.S. involvement in the War of 1898 reflects many of the fundamental patterns in our national history—exploration and discovery, labor exploitation, violence, racism, class conflict, and concern for security—that many believe shaped America's course in the twentieth and twenty-first century.

4 out of 5 stars Great pocket size book........2000-12-18

The pictures are full color but only are of male birds. It only has the summer coloring also, not winter coloring of changing birds like goldfinches. Very nice up close pictures though. It shows great detail of birds in their natural settings. This book is perfect for a pocket or bag. It measures about 4" high and 6" long. This book contains basic data of common eastern birds. It states a brief description, identification, voice, habitat, and range. There is also information about basic birdwatching, identifying, and attracting birds in the introduction. I keep this book next to my home office computer where I have a feeder outside my window just in case I have an unfamiliar visitor.
