Not a must have.......2002-02-26
I'm not a professional painter so I need a lot of details on how to do something and this book was short on details. Most of the pictures of the effects are very close up, so I have no idea what they look when viewed a few feet away. I was disappointed with this book.

Great ideas for modern paint designs.......2001-12-30
I am a professional decorative painter, and this is without a doubt my favorite idea book. This doesn't have any of the frilly country stencils or flowers - this is all very stylized and modern, with clean lines and bright colors and metallics. It is definately something different from the normal decorative painting fodder. It is a great addition to a collection of idea/reference books. I use this book all the time.
Book Description
A memoir of the famous photographer by a former friend.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2005-10-30
I found this book extremely disappointing and agree with other reviewers that the author seemed more interested in aggrandizing himself through association with Mapplethorpe. Fritscher also seems intent on producing this biography to prove that Mapplethorpe selected him, rather than Patricia Morrisroe, as biographer. The writing is annoying, frequently repetitive, and skips all over the place chronologically. The book comes across more as a collection of magazine/newspapers articles rather than a coherent whole.
A Lasting Snapshot of Photographic Genius.......2005-01-05
Few artists have been mythologized as quickly and as completely as the late Robert Mapplethorpe. The incredible life of the controversial photographer is given new focus in the biography Mapplethorpe: Assault with a Deadly Camera by friend, confidant, and former lover Jack Fritscher. Insider knowledge of the man humanizes a complex individual who has become obscured by his art and by the scourge of censorship.
This revealing portrait by Hastings House publishers shows Mapplethorpe from his early days as a fledgling photographer. As the former editor of Drummer magazine, it was Fritscher who gave Mapplethorpe his first magazine cover. The biography traces his rise to prominence as the avant-garde photographer of the New York art scene, his sexual obsessions, his ongoing relationship with punk legend Patti Smith, his drug use, his submersion into leather culture, his love of beauty, his theories on art, and much more. Into the narrative Fritscher weaves a fair amount of artistic exploration and examination as well.
Mapplethorpe: Assault with a Deadly Camera also contains a generous number of photos and a gold mine of data about not only Robert Mapplethorpe, but about the larger scope of the gay leathersex New York scene of the late 70s and early 80s. Fritscher explores somewhat extensively the great creators of the erotic image from that period such as Rex, as well as those on the photographic cutting edge such as Joel-Peter Witkin. By exploring Mapplethorpe's influences as well as his life, Fritscher provides the reader with a wider understanding not only of the artist, but also of his world and times.
Many authors wrote this book by Fritscher.......2004-04-27
By chasing down lots of interviews, author Fritscher manages to have several friends of Mapplethorpe compose their thoughts of robert and his photographs. The beauty of this book is the multiple voices speaking which Fritscher takes the time to present to honor Mapplethorpe. He could have had the last word himself--after all, he had the book contract and was the man's sometime lover. This Mapplethorpe memoir is actually written by the following artists and personalities who Fritscher presents--AND LETS SPEAK IN THEIR OWN VOICES WHICH HE COLLECTED: GEORGE DUREAU, HOLLY SOLOMON, CAMILLE O'GRADY, REX, MARK WALKER, THE INCREDIBLE MILES EVERETT, EDWARD LUCIE-SMITH, JOEL-PETER WITKIN. (Yes, this book is scary, and it gets scarier as time goes by and our culture becomes more puritanical. It's also a good reference book of those times and events that are now so far back in the past.
Mildly interesting, mostly annoying and self-aggrandizing........2004-01-11
It's been about two years since I read this book, but its lingering effect is extreme irritation with the writer. Fritscher is clearly far more interested in himself than in Mapplethorpe, and boastfully uses the subject of his "biography" (term used charitably) as little more than a tool with which to broadcast his own (clearly exaggerated) influence on -- and involvement with -- the photographer. While I don't doubt that Fritscher played a small role in Mapplethorpe's life and art, I don't for a second believe that it was even a tiny fraction of what he'd like you to believe. Jack, you were one of a large pool of pornographers and one of an even more humongous population of RM's lovers. This bio reeks of little more than self-promotion and self-promoting fiction, and the fact that it was penned posthumously makes it even more disgusting and annoying.
Very interesting "read" that penetrates 70s art &sex world.......2003-09-03
Written as a tell-all memoir of pop culture, this book is amazing in what it tells us about lost lives in lost times. Real nostalgia. Actually, this book is loaded with "gay street credential." The fact that it has an index tells you the book seriously intends to record history's major and minor characters. Many gay pop culture books don't even bother to have an index which makes them useless. My litmus test in a book store is to first see if a book has an index, and then I skim it to see who's included and who's not, because that way I can judge the book's presentation and prejudices. Too bad Patty Smith doesn't write about Mapplethorpe and this period like his boyfriend did in writing this attack on American lying, political hypocrisy, and phoney art wackjobs. What is generously amazing is that boyfriend Fritscher seems to genuinely miss and mourne Mapplethorpe to the degree that he devotes 60% of the book to direct interviews with other Mapplethorpe art friends like George Dureau, Joel-Peter Witkin, and others who all speak for themselves.

Explicitly written for social and political activists, as well as for educators, it presents a history of the technology, a guide to progressive uses of the Internet and an account of how NGOs and others have been using information and communication technology (ICT) for social and political change. Companion to Human Right Organisations and NGOs'.......2000-04-28
The power of Internet supported activism can be seen from the very fact that 1997 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, whose part of activism-effort was mainly based on 'Web' activities. Jim Walch starts the first chapter of his "In the Net" with this historical phenomenon, and focuses activism movement in the Net from different angles. Starting with the basic approach and tools of Internet supported activism movement, he goes to explain the relatively new happenings in the Internet with several recent examples, e.g. Net-Activism in Bosnia-war or solidarity efforts in East Timor. Not only an in-depth analysis of crisis communication, but also the suitable approach for emancipatory action in the web with suitable example makes the book a must for Human Right Organisations and NGOs'. Increase uses of net give rise to anxiety of information overflow in the 21st Century. Information Managers are now trying to utilise the interactive capacity of Internet through methodical approach like 'Push' or 'Pull' technology. It would have been better if the author has discussed these techniques so that the readers may have an idea how one can attract the interest of maximum people.

AuthorZone.Com Book Review.......2004-01-01
The Review
Section one The Early Years presents five chapters Out of Sight But Not Out of Mind, School Daze, Emergency Exits, Let's Go Fly a Kite, Out and About, and Final Thoughts. Section two The Later Years is eight chapters Friendly Reminders, Study Strategies, The 9 1 1 , Let's Party!, The Dating Game, Getting Connected?, Working Hard or Hardly Working?, Baby Baby! And in the end.
The writers present an eye opening statement in their introduction: `As parents we make assumptions as to what we have taught our children and what we think they know.' What Would We Do If is a direct by product of the writers' learning the truth of that statement.
Each chapter is presented as a help for parents to use when talking with their own children about what to do in specific situations. What to do when situations are encountered at a friend's house, at school, or emergency setting are all geared on what to say to the small child who may not yet understand what to do. Emergency situation especially need to be well thought out by parents prior to their trying to teach children what to do when the smoke alarm goes off, or a tornado is nearly upon you.
As kids mature talking time between parent and child needs to continue, however the specifics may change. The writers stress that Parents must have well developed understandings for how they themselves will face situations prior to trying to talk to their pre teen or teens.
Writers Bunker and Osborne are parents who have put into practice the methods they advocate in What Would We Do If. I especially enjoyed the little tidbits added as the writers told how specific situations played out for them regarding the suggestions offered.
What Would We Do If is a short little book filled to the brim with useful, helpful hints developed by two women who have an easy writing, easy reading style.
The book should prove helpful to parents of newborns and older kids alike. The book is easily read, filled with good useful suggestions and will enhance the home library of those who endeavor to broaden their understanding of kids and how to guide them to successful adulthood.
Enjoyed the read, happy to recommend.
Great, practical way to talk to kids!.......2002-03-14
This book is so easy to use and it works! I thought that I had prepared my kids but I found out that I was wrong. This is such a simple way to have a conversation WITH my kids. We have been able to talk about things I had never thought of before. I highly recommend it!
Book Description
Hard cover, large format (9"x12"), 392 pages, 190 photo pages, numerous diagrams and charts. This unit history features lots of first-hand accounts of this unit - the senior Tiger battalion of the German Army. Schwere Panzer-Abteilung 503 was formed in late 1942 and fought until the bitter end on both the Eastern and WesternFronts. It was issued with both the Tiger I and the massive Königstiger (with both the Henschel- and Porsche-turrets). Besides an exciting text, this volume also features 190 photo pages with nearly 300 photos, a good percentage of which have never been published previously.
Customer Reviews:
Phenomenal! .......2007-10-16
If you're a Tiger enthusiast or interested in German armor, this is another "must have" book. Five stars aren't enough, this is another home run unit history - great photos, tons of details, it's a phenomenal volume. Don't wait and have to settle for a cheaper paperback reprint years from now, this book is well worth the price.
Outstanding unit History.......2006-09-06
This is another outstanding Tiger unit history published by JJF and depicts the men and machines of the 503rd Tiger Tank battalion.
It is printed as usual on fine glossy paper with over 390 pages packed with excellent photos of the units tigers and the men who crewed them, plus many contributions by former members of their own personal accounts of battles and life on both the Eastern and Western fronts.
Many of the superb photos have come from the personal albums of the units men and gives the reader an insight into everyday life in the day to day running of one of the more senior Tiger tank battalions.
The 503rd was equipped with the Tiger 1 and was one of the first units to be equipped with the Tiger 2, both of these armoured beasts are shown in great detail.
Also included are maps of the area of operations for the unit, reproducctions of unit orders and logs and organisational diagrams to give the reader a feel for how the unit operated.
I would recommend this book to all avid historians who have an interest in armoured warfare.
The unit members have done their battalion proud with this book.
Book Description
Published in association with America's preeminent authority, the Smithsonian Institution, this comprehensive handbook to the birds of North America: Eastern Region includes 706 species -- all birds known to breed east of the 100th meridian on the United States and Canada, as well as regular visitors and vagrants to this region. The Smithsonian Handbook is the first identification guide that includes details of the bird's life history in a concise and user-friendly format. Each full-page profile combines a precise description, annotated photographs, and artworks to highlight the key field marks of the species in each plumage. Similar species are shown and distinguishing characteristics are noted. Further information on the bird's habits describes the typical song and other vocalizations, behavior, breeding, nesting, population, and conservation concerns. Typical flight patterns and nest locations and shapes are described with clear icons, and amplified in the text. Each bird's range during summer, winter, and on migration is clearly shown on a map.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful companion book for the average birder.......2007-05-26
A really great book on birds. With photo picture makes it easier to identify as well as a commonly confused with (looks a lot like) section. It is well organized (like most bird books by predator/color). Also nice to have a little shadow in the corner showing scale compared to this book. The sounds the birds make isn't too helpful to me (more fun watching my friends trying to make the sounds) but then again I do better with visual identification. My one family member likes it so much I've had a hard time getting it back from her. If you're looking for general information of trying to identify a bird that may live in the eastern part of North American then this is a fine book. However if your looking for your local state and are pretty new to birding it may overwhelm you and this may be a book for you but after your over the beginner state.
Birds of North America - Eastern Region.......2007-04-18
I read at least 10 different books from the library, and was pleased to be able to purchase this book from Amazon. The pictures are clear and accurate. The format is very easy to use. Would recommend for all interested in bird watching and identificationSmithsonian Handbooks: Birds of North America -- Eastern Region (Smithsonian Handbooks)
Wonderful Content.......2007-01-03
I am not an avid birdwatcher, but I am interested in identifying birds whenever I see one in my backyard or on a camping trip. That's why after looking through all the bird books I could find, I settled on this one. I love the layout of the pages and the content included about each bird, especially the diagram of the flight patterns. Also, the pictures are very helpful. This book works great on a bookshelf as an occasional reference, but I would not want to lug it around with me in the woods.
Book Review Birds Of North America :Eastern.......2006-08-14
This Guidebook gives a very accurate description of Birds of Eastern North America including some outstanding habits, nesting areas, and calls. It is a very important addition to my Ornathalogical Book collection.
Think of it as a mini encyclopedia on birds of eastern North America.......2005-12-17
There have been over 800 species of birds identified in North America. This includes all those that breed there or have ever been proven to have visited, even very rarely. This book limits itself to eastern NA(east of the 100th meridan, roughly the Mississippi)and north of Mexico plus ajacent islands and seas within 200 miles of the coast. All birds have been documented by the American Ornithologists' Union. It covers 696 species. There is a similar book for Western North America.Obviously many birds will be in each book because of overlapping. The species are in taxonomic order as is the norm for most bird books.
The birds are covered one per page. There is a large color photograph,a written description, song description, behavior details, breeding information, nesting details,as well as length, wingspan, flight pattern, nest identification ,scientific family and species names.plumage, habitat, migrationweight, range maps, scale sihouettes, information to show differences with similar species. The book also has a 37 page introduction on how to use the book and what birding is all about.
This book will serve many purposes;but mainly as a use at home resource. It is much too heavy to tote around while birding, but certainly packed with much mote material. An excellent book to have 'on the shelf'for a serious or otherwise interest in birds.
For someone starting and wanting a bird book to take with them in the field ,go with; Peterson,Kaufman,Golden,American Bird Conservancy's field Guide,National Geographic,Sibley's or such.
