Unique, unusual designs.......1997-06-30
Good directions & pictures. Interesting styles and shapes and designs. Loved the different techniques used, especially the stuff that looks like brick and stucco. And the watermelon house is adorable. Inspiring. Easy directions. Pretty.
Was disappointed that it was a paperback book - for $20 I expect a hardback.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent TEXTBOOK with the more current approach........1999-12-08
It is a BRAVE book that runs against the grains when compared to the regular, run-of-the-mill management information systems book.
This is a TEXT BOOK, for students at the junior level in the US.
What I like about the book is it is brave in accepting TQM, Reengineering and Michael Porter's value chain model as a set of key to gain a strategic prowess.
When a stance is taken as to ACCEPT those, then we don't need to worry about proofs for that stance. Let's just believe them.
Next, those set of systems translate into strategies. Strategies must be quantified, right? When you quantify a strategy by computerizing it then you come face to face with computerized information systems.
Then you'll be asked about Data Communications, Internet (the media that makes those data communicate), the client/server, the data base, the whole bit.
Of course, the text is very kind to include the Economics consideration on the wake of establishing the systems, also included is the systems development aspect when we really want to create an information systems project.
This is an excellent book for those who need a survey on the huge and much threatening field of Management Information Systems - Computer Based.

Customer Reviews:
This book is great to help you think about buying a home.......2004-08-08
As noted by other reviewers, you can not buy a house with absolutely no money down. I did find out that it does not take as much as you think it will take. This book helps you really think about your options and what resources you have and how you can get that down payment. Nothing is absolute in financing for a home there are alot of variables for each state and city. So read this book to help you think differently and then ask questions of friends, family and of course those who are work in the housing market you are looking to buy in.
For me this book really helped me to think differently about how to get my down payment and closing cost. I used some ideas and created my own based upon what I learned.
I have owned my own home now for over a year and it has been one of the best things I have ever done. We did an FHA loan and used other sources to secure the downpayment. We did not use our credit cards, which I disagree with the authors about. I bought a great home in a solid neighborhood and the value of the home has already gone up. I am expecting to refinance my home in 2-4 years and see my mortgage go down. This is such a better deal than paying rent :)
Great information, but don't be fooled by the title!.......2004-02-08
As no one had written a review of this book when I purchased it, I bought it based on the title alone; but don't let it fool you. It's not 300 pages on buying a home with little or no money down alone, as I would have thought, and primarily what I bought it for. Most of the chapters are simply about buying a house.
There is helpful and thorough information about figuring out how much house you can afford, credit, tax savings, home owners insurance, mortages, what to look for if inspecting the house yourself, etc. There are also many helpful sample and example forms such as House Closing/Refinance Data and Gift Letters. Also provided are tables that calculate credit ratings, mortages, etc. There are sample lists of what to look for at each viewing and sample tables of how to compare all of the properties. The book is riddled with "Example", "Note", "Caution", and "Tip" asides that help to explain, warn, and advize. Also, at the end of each chapter is a chapter summary, which is nice, because if you're not sure if you need to read the entire chapter or not, you can read the chapter summary first and decide then if you need more information. Each chapter is not set up like a novel either, which is also nice. It's broken down into smaller sections with informative headings so you really don't need to read the entire book to pinpoint the information you want.
One of the most helpful parts of this book is the glossary in the back of the book. We are first time home buyers, and I am not familiar with much of the terminology of home buying, so I found the glossary helpful in understanding what I was reading.
Now to the point of the book, buying a house with little or no money down. There is no "true" way to buy a house with no money down. You still need several thousand dollars in closing fees. There are two chapters in this book about "no" money down. Chapter 7 is called "Mom and Dad (Or a Good Friend) Give the Down Payment" and discusses taxes, shows sample forms to use, and gives tips and examples to help. Chapter 8 is called "Borrow the Downpayment from Family or Friends". This chapter discusses types of loans, interest rates, collateral, security, etc and provides an example of a form you would use if you chose to borrow the money from family or friends.
Chapter 10, "FHA Insured Mortgages", is what I was hoping this book would be all about, because of the title. If you are buying this book soley for information on buying a house with little money down, you will find that this is the most helpful chapter. (In addition to the FHA mortages, the author provides names, numbers, and websites for other agencies to go to that offer 3% or less down payments.) The author discusses how FHA morgages work, how much of a down payment you will need (1.25-2.85% depending on the area), benefits and drawbacks, how to qualify, and probably most importantly, how to obtain one. Just like the rest of the book there are "Tip"s and "Caution"s and tables to help explain.
Although I was disappointed that this book is not ALL about buying a house with little or no money down, as the title implies, there is lots of very useful, helpful, informative information in this book. However, no one book has everything. I would recomend, "100 Questions Every First-TIme Home Buyer Should Ask" by Ilyce R. Glink in addition to this book to any first-time home buyer out there.
Happy House Hunting! :-)

Very Helpful Book.......2000-09-15
This is a great book for learning different questions to ask your lender so that you can get the deal that is best for you. It also tells you different companies and programs that you can contact to get on a little or no money down program. This was an extremely helpful book. It completely covered the loan part of buying a home. If you have questions about other aspects of buying a home this book won't really help that much. For that get Home Buying for dummies. Between the two you can answer all of your own questions!

Identify Yourself: The 50 Most Common Birding Identification Challenges
ASIN: 0618236481 |
Book Description
In this book, bursting with more information than any field guide could hold, the well-known author and birder Pete Dunne introduces readers to the "Cape May School," or GISS, method of identification, which focuses on a bird holistically, giving more weight to the general impression of the bird than to specific field marks. After determining the most likely possibilities by considering such factors as habitat and season, the birder uses characteristics such as size, shape, behavior, flight pattern, and vocalizations to identify a bird. The book provides an arsenal of additional hints and helpful clues to guide a birder when, even after a review of a field guide, the identification still hangs in the balance. This supplement to field guides shares the knowledge and skills that expert birders bring to identification challenges.
Customer Reviews:
Great companion guide..........2007-07-07
This is a wonderful addition to The Peterson Field Guide - greater in-depth information regarding habitat and plumage.
A good companion is hard to find.......2007-02-24
This field guide companion looks stark at first, with no pictures, but that is part of the point. With many fine field guides available, this is meant to supplement them, and in no way replace them. The necessarily brief descriptions of a field guide are nicely fleshed out in this volume, which is best suited to browsing after returning from the field, or for thumbing through when you can't get out into the field. The best addition to my stay-at-home birding library since Ehrlich, Dobkin & Wheye's "The Birder's Handbook."
Poorly Cut Book.......2007-02-23
Peter Dunnes unique comments, perspective & observations make this book interesting to read yet very informative. His approach to identification gives you additional yet simplistic help.
I did not look at the condition of the book until the return time had expired. I was disappointed that the last section of the Index was cut improperly. I could not find a contact email to complain. The book should be replaced. If you read this I hope you will arrange to replace the book.
It is Essential.......2007-01-19
This companion to my field guides has no pictures other than word pictures. It uses GISS (General Impression of Size and Shape) style of birding. Why is this important I can give a recent example. Here in New York City we had a Common Loon on the Reservoir. One birder reported a male and a female Common Loon, but was incorrect. It turned out to be the Common Loon and a Double Crested Cormorant. The difference was very obvious by using GISS but the mistaken birder was using feather birding and the bird was far away. This is a very useful guide. I would ask readers to read a sample page and decide for themselfs
Field guide to Pete Dunne's writing tone.......2006-12-16
Excellent and valuable book, no doubt. And Pete Dunne is a pretty nice guy (I've birded with him).
However...his writing *does* have this smarmy tone. Yes, he probably *does* know everything, but his writing makes you sure you understand that. Hard to pick a specific page since I don't have the book in front of me. But pick almost any page -- through Amazon's random thingie? -- and you may see what I mean. However, he does manage to slyly insult two famous, but dead, birders in the introduction! Nice. (NOT)
In addition, will someone puh-leeze tell Pete Dunne that his continued use of the word "noisome" to describe loud birds is wrong, wrong, wrong?
The word means "offensive," and generally implies malodorous or stinky. It does NOT mean loud!
My guess: No one dares edit his work for fear they'll disturb his distinctive know-it-all style. Sigh.
P.S. I found at least one factual error. In New England, at least, Yellow Warblers are generally found singing high in trees, though rarely at the top, not "close to the ground" as Dunne has it.
P.P.S. To correct a previous post, this book is not meant as a field guide but as an added resource that covers stuff field guides cannot show you.
