Sara Midda reveals her keen sense of observation and sensitivity as she turns her attention to the topic of childhood. Her wonderful illustrations remind us of how mysterious, confusing, wonderful and painful the world of children can be, and how often children are misunderstood. It will probably help parents and grown-ups understand their children (by reminding them of what it was like to be a child) more than any self-help book.

We bought this book 2 days before we did a home inspection of our new house. We hired an inspector, but wanted to know more in order to understand the whole process and have questions for the inspector. We didn't have time to read the whole book, but it did provide us with excellent information about what to look for. I would definitively recommend it for anybody in similar circumstances.

this is the WORST book on home inspection I have read so far. total waste of money. how could you learn home inspection without seeing pictures ??? and there is absolutely NO photographs in this damn book !!!

The Home Inspecton Troubleshooter.......2004-01-24

This is a great book for prospective homeowners to have not just prior to, and during the home inspection (which, by the way, they should always attend), but before an offer is even made on a property. What I liked most about this book is its organization. Chapter One is a "one-hour" home inspection... a handy checklist of things to look for and a great tool for buyers to use during the looking stage, before they fall in love with a home or property. Not being a contractor or construction expert, I can't vouch for the accuracy of the content, but there is plenty of great information here to raise the necessary red flags at the very first go-through or during the inspection.

As a new real estate agent, I plan on recommending this book to all my clients as a valuable tool for the looking, pre-inspection, inspection stages, when they are doing due diligence prior to signing off on the Agreement of Sale. Rather than being afraid of so-called "deal killers", as many agents are, I believe in arming my clients with the information they need to make intelligent, informed choices in purchasing their property, as any reputable agent should.

I own 2 copies of this book...one is at home and one is at the office...just in case. And, I never loan them out. Buy it, read it, hi-lite it, speak up and and ask questions, and you should have nothing to worry about.
It even has a home maintenance checklist of things to stay on top of after you've moved in.
I hope Robert Irwin has plans to update this edition, and keep writing new edditions so that we can count on having this valuable reference around for a long time.

Comprehensive and Readable.......2007-06-30

My introduction to Barry Cohen was the Friday after I was diagnosed with CHD. As a woman who has taken good care of herself - eating right and exercising - I was shocked when a high score on a cononary calcium scoring test deposited me into the heart of a disease that only others had. I was in the 75th percentile - that's bad! The calcium burden was in my LAD. I needed infomation - more than offered on the internet and more than my present doctor had time to offer me. Dr. Cohen was recommended to me by a cardiologist who is a family friend. After consulting with him, I bought his book.

In this book, Dr. Cohen and Bobbie Hasselbring have presented a concise, readable, and informative block of information a newly diagnosed patient needs. Step by step they take you through the understanding, risk factors, symptoms (in my case, none) of heart disease. There is a chapter on WOMEN! written with an understanding not often experienced. The chapter covers how we present differently from men, our higher death rates than men, hormone replacement and many risk factors. There is a glossary so that we can better understand our doctor during consultations. This is a book I will read and reread. For those of us who want information - this is the ticket! The information in Coronary Heart Disease empowers us. Dr. Cohen was named one of the best cardiologists in New Jersey, 2007. After you read his book, you will know why. The information about medications, medical procedures, treatment and lifestyle changes gives both the patient and the family the tools needed to be more pro-active and powerful when facing CHD. Thank you for writing this book for humanity.

I have a shelf of books on cardiac care but when I realized that I would be taken to a hospital with angina, I took this book, and only this book, along for the ride. Hospitalized and awaiting treatment, I digested the 186 page book cover to cover.

"Coronary Heart Disease" provides a lucid explanation of diagnosis and treatment aimed at a lay audience. While I might use a big book for coverage of a specific topic, for a coherent, readable, up to date synopsis, this compact book is the companion I bring along.

Web authors use the term "information architecture" to convey the sense of the big picture hidden within complex structures and "chunking" to indicate the intelligible presentation of the information. So it is here. The design of this book gives the reader the orientation and the content needed to grasp coronary heart disease quickly and accurately. The handy glossary and appended list of resources provide supplemental tools for the reader.

Thus, the authors have achieved their goal: This clearly written and well organized book by Dr. Cohen and Ms. Hasselbring empowers the patient to partner with the cardiologist in the delivery of care. This is a book that you can, and should, use.

I promised Dr. Cohen that I would put his book to use. After he operated on me twice within the span of a year, we both know that there must be a better way. Dr. Cohen and Ms. Hasselbring have charted the course. The rest is in my hands, which is the point of "Coronary Heart Disease."

In a world of instability where one of the only constants has become that of stress, the need to take control rises to the top of a daily "to do" list. Whereas geopolitical strategy is often left to the better judgement of our elected officials, the education and deployment of healthy lifestyle ones is up to the individual. In his book, CORONARY HEART DISEASE: A GUIDE TO DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT, Dr. Cohen redefines an inherently complex area of medicine into a simple one which suggests small steps to follow on a daily basis for long term success. It is true that medicine and treatment options will evolve at a rapid pace leaving some specific procedures behind in the process. However, the text of CORONARY HEART DISEASE appears timeless in its ability to last as a resource in every household,to be referenced over the years with regard to family issues and in order to share it with anyone close to heart in an effort to strengthen their lives. This book is great!! It is written to be read -- not full of jargon or complicated medical terms -- and the suggestions for prevention and heart care are really helpful and can actually be incorporated into every day life. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who has or has had a family member with heart issues (and who hasn't???)

This account provides a fascinating in-depth view of what might have happened had the two superpowers attempted to settle their differences by force.

A nice overview.......2001-01-27

"American War Plans: 1945-1950" by Steven T. Ross is a detailed look at the planning that the United States undertook in the period from the end of World War II to the beginning of the Korean War in order to meet the rising Soviet threat, with a strong emphasis on the word "plan". If you are looking for a book on early Cold War politics, or even a look at U.S. grand strategy in the post-war era, this is not what you are looking for. Ross concerns himself exclusively with the military's contingency planning for open war with the U.S.S.R., and given the hypothetical nature of that planning, and the vastly reduced role in policy formulation the military enjoyed post 1945, these plans are exercises in threat evaluation, and generally speaking, not power politics.

Ross' work opens with perhaps one of the great ironies of the Cold War: by 1946 the U.S. military, arguably the most powerful armed force in history at the end of WWII, and certainly the most well rounded, had been gutted to the point that it was not only incapable of defending Western Europe, it was largely incapable of even slowing the U.S.S.R. down. At the same time, there is the puzzling dichotomy of a military forced to rely on atomic weapons to compensate for a lack of conventional forces, at the same time that they have no idea how many weapons are available, and only a dim view of their battlefield utility. Thus, the first plans Ross discusses, are defined by a complete withdrawal from Western Europe, and a WWIII fought from the Middle East. The initial phases of such a conflict would entail an evacuation of continental Western Europe, a reinforcement of Great Britain, and securing the Mediterranean theater of operations. At the same time, atomic attacks would attempt to pound the U.S.S.R. and its satellites into submission. In the final phases of this scenario, the Allies would drive into the Soviet Union from the south, through the Caucuses. This final element is interesting in that it draws far more on the maneuver theory so prevalent today, than do the latter iterations of the plan, which presage the defense in depth of later decades.

It would excessive to give an overview of each additional scenario, but there are a few developments in the following years that often define the remainder of the Cold War era. The first is that the arms race is defined at a very early date; aside from the use of atomic weapons, Ross repeatedly mentions contingency planning for the development, and presumable use, of chemical and biological weapons. Along those same lines, the direction of nuclear war was pretty much set by 1948, as the first target of atomic bombs became the enemy's atomic bombs. Thus, in the span of three years, atomic bombs went from being a decisive weapon, to a non-factor (although it wasn't recognized yet) as all battlefield utility (e.g. counterforce) had largely been removed from their employment. This likewise dovetails into the internecine strife that often characterized the service branch turf wars of the Cold War. In particular, the Air Force/Navy battles become apparent as the Air Force argues that atomic war is the primary task in any future war, rather than one of many. In addition, although it is never explicit, the refusal to mount a first strike becomes implicit in U.S. military planning at this point. Finally, Ross' discussion of the fears for terrorism and subversion in the U.S., including the use of unconventional weapons by Soviet agents strongly echoes the fears of a post 9/11 world.

Ultimately, the need to shore up European allies in the newly formed NATO brings planning full circle, as the Joint Chiefs are forced by political requirements to plan for the defense of Europe. This, when combined with the Korean War, finally begins the process of funding that will allow the U.S. to have at least a reasonable chance of defending Europe. Thus, in five years another full circle is achieved as the military is gutted to achieve a political expedient, only to be rebuilt in order to achieve a different one.

In the end, Ross has done an excellent job of compiling numerous primary sources into a through, cogent and readable volume. His considerations of budget constraints versus planning necessities serve as a constant grounding for the work, and his exploration of the challenges of atomic planning is both interesting in and of itself, and critical to understanding the development of America strategy. This is a must read for any student of the Cold War.

R.S. Rose has done a fantastic job of selecting those events in Brazilian history that have led to a distorted view of violence both by the country's shrinking upper classes and by the multitudes in the mire beneath them. His use of historical data to underline sociological concerns is equally lucid, and a methodology that should be seen more often. This is a rare book. Do not pass it by!

Geat Book for Identifing Ducks.......2007-05-14

I've looked everywhere for a table top book with just information and color photos of ducks to help us identify the water fowl we see from our home on the Chesapeake Bay - This is it - Wonderful full size, full color photos that point out the differences in species both in flight characteristics and on the water feeding activities. Age and sex appearance differences are also illustrated as each species has its own chapter. Well organized layout that is ideal for our purpose - best of its kind that I've seen.

The Great Gallery of Ducks... is truly great, if you're looking for a pictorial reference book on waterfowl. The book is crammed with photographs, almost all of which are well-taken, many showing fine detail. A few are underexposed, but most are indeed of great use to birders, artists and others intent on seeing waterfowl up close and personal.

This book is one to have! This book is what I call the greatest beginners book to waterfowl. It takes you step by step, thru different breeds (Canvasback & Green-winged teal), types (Dabblers & divers), and the anatomy of the birds. It is a great book for any waterfowl painter or Waterfowl carving beginning artist to invest in. It has helped me a lot and it has helped my other fellow artist out also. (Like 2000 Federal Duck Stamp artist Adam Grimm) Take my word: get this book. You'll thank me.

Excellent Source for young Waterfowl hunters?.......1999-10-22

I have been hunting ducks all my life and have read quite a few books on waterfowl, but I have never come across any book with so many pictures on different kinds of ducks and geese. I believe this book is an excellent source for people who are beginners in waterfowl hunting since they can learn about what different kinds of ducks look like.

Like my cousin who said he loves his Grandpa book, I too think it's a great book for those who are looking to know more about the anatomy of ducks. Along with Dick's other books and works, he always put so much effort into everything he did. I was there when many of the pictures for the book were taken. The pictures that look as if they were taken on a real pond were actually done at a pond on property Dick owned. He took a goose decoy, placed an electric motor, prop and controls inside, and a remote controlled camera pointing out from its side. Before his death, he told me he wanted to come up with a way to take pictures of ducks and geese from the air. He talked of developing a remote controlled goose with a camera that would fly. I believe he would have done! It is truely a pleasure to look at my copy of the book and remember his genius.
