Essential Resource for the Healing Garden Designer.......2000-12-27
Beautiful organization, research examples to support common-sense recommendations, case studies with pictures, this superb book is the first stop for the healing garden designer. The case studies and design recommendations are grouped by health care setting, which makes the reading more focused. By far the best professional text on the topic.
Aplicaciones para la salud.......2000-06-18
Creo que es un buen punto de partida para comenzar a incluir en el diseño del entorno y el paisaje pautas que incluyan un beneficio directo en la salud de quienes lo contemplan.

Book Description
"There are photographers, and then there is Murray Garrett. He has a magic eye or a secret device in his camera that captures something different, something special that is missed by other photographers."
-Bob Hope
This collection of rare photographs from Hollywood's Golden Era-including never-before-seen shots of Marilyn Monroe, Gary Cooper, Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, Cary Grant, and other legendary stars-showcases 150 of the best pictures taken by photojournalist Murray Garrett when he was on assignment in Hollywood from 1946 to the 1970s. Some of these shots ran at the time in LIFE, Time, and other national magazines; many are published here for the first time.
From a rare shot of Marlon Brando at home snuggling with his cat to a heartwarming photo of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall whispering together at a party, these remarkable pictures, together with Murray Garrett's own comments and reminiscences, give readers a unique behind-the-scenes glimpse of Hollywood in its heyday.
MURRAY GARRETT was a professional photographer specializing in show business, first in New York in the early 1940s, then in Hollywood from 1946 until the early 1970s. He was sent on assignment by the best news magazines, including LIFE, Time, and Look, and also worked privately for many directors, film executives, and stars. Now retired, he lives in Sherman Oaks, California.
150 duotone photographs, 9 x 113/4"
Customer Reviews:
A Photographic Treasure.......2002-09-27
This is a wonderful compilation of photographs and text taken throughout the years by Murray Garrett. All of the Hollywood golden age stars are featured: Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Jean Simmons, Natalie Wood, Ava Gardner. The photos catch the personal side of the stars, such as the photo of Richard Burton strapped into an airline seat along with his daughter's doll, as well as their entrances into glamourous events. He also adds his personal recollections such as Ava Gardner's love of jokes, off color or not, Eve Arden's love of her daughter, the secrecy of Natalie Wood's 21st birthday party. The stories are fascinating. The pictures are beautiful and unique. I am glad Murray decided to share them with us.
Great pictures: sloppy text.......2001-12-18
It's amazing that the following mistakes appear in this book:
1) A reference to Cecil B. DeMille's "Sunset Boulevard".
It's Billy Wilder's and Leigh Brackett's picture. DeMille had
a cameo in it.
2) Donna Douglas (of "Beverly Hillbillies" fame) is referred to
in a caption as "Donna Dixon" and in the accompanying text as
"Joey Heatherton".
3) Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman, in English riding clothes,
are described as wearing "Western gear".
4) Sammy Davis Jr's ex-wife, Mai Britt, is twice referred to as
"May Britt".
Did anybody edit this book, or were Garrett's reminiscences taken
on faith because he, of all people, should know?
The Best of Hollywood's Golden Age.......2000-10-27
I have had the priveledge of knowing Murray Garrett for over 25 years as a business associate and friend. I was completely blown away by his incredible talent as a photographer and writer. This book captures a Hollywood that I remember as my home town and really was the entertainment capitol of the world. The pictures are unique, and definitely candid. Murray's comments about the stars shed new insights into the personalities and quirks of some of the most loved and famous celebrities of the era. A beautiful collection of memorys from a man who approaches Hollywood from an honest, compasionate and humorous point of view. Highly recommended.
Pre-press.......2000-09-24
I had the privilege of seeing much of this book in pre-press form and knew it had to be a knockout. The pics are all exceptional but Murray's anecdotes and insight make this much more than a celebrity puff-piece. The finished book is even better than my early predictions. Great stuff!!!

Book Description
Yoga is India's greatest gift to the world, believed the sage Tirumalai Krishnamacharya. His contribution was to preserve and modernize the five-thousand-year-old wisdom that today benefits millions of individuals far beyond the confines of this Yogic master's homeland.
To Krishnamacharya, Yoga was a means to improved health; to restored well-being in the face of illness; and to emotional balance and enhanced mental clarity. It was also the accessible path of progression toward union with the Absolute-- whether conceived as a named God or a nameless truth.
Health, Healing & Beyond is the long-awaited biographical profile and exploration of the work of this teacher of many of Yoga's greatest exponents-- including B.K.S. Iyengar, Indra Devi, and K. Pattabhi Jois. It is the story of dedication to a single purpose-- to place the benefits of Yoga at the service of humanity.
This lively, affectionate account, by Krishnamacharya's son T.K.V. Desikachar, traces the near-mythic labors of scholarship that equipped Krishnamacharya with an unparalleled mastery of India's ancient traditions. Years spent as a disciple to a legendary teacher in Tibet were followed by Krishnamacharya's service to the Maharaja of Mysore in the last years of British colonial rule in India. There, in the 1930s, American and European medical experts reported the Yogi's astonishing ability to stop both his heartbeat and his breath: essentially, to control the life process itself.
In the years following India's Independence, until Krishnamacharya's death in 1989 at the age of 100, his efforts were concentrated on adapting, even revolutionizing, Yogic practice for modern life. He swept aside ancient prohibitions against certain Yogic practices by women, and innovated therapeutic treatments for respiratory, cardiac, stroke, and injury victims, as well as new therapies for mental illness and disabilities. His great mission was to make Yoga available to each individual, regardless of age, sex, race, culture, station in life, and belief-- or non-belief.
Desikachar also provides a remarkably lucid introduction to ancient Sanskrit texts, including the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, which are the foundation of Yoga as a "science of the mind." For both beginners and advanced students, as well as the curious lay reader, Health, Healing & Beyond is an indispensable guide to the philosophy, principles, and limitless possibilities of Yoga.
Customer Reviews:
Must read for Yoga enthusiasts.......2006-05-13
When I bought this book I expected to read about deep details of the life of the 'teacher of teachers' T.Krishnamacharya. But as his son, the author, says in the very first chapters T.K did not divulge a lot to even his own son. From that point in the book I expected to be bored with the authors ramblings, but was pleasantly surprised to find it a good read.
While it would have been good to get a first account from TK, this secondhand account from his student and son is not bad. For me personally, it removes the suspicious aura of mystery that surrounds these 'yogi people'. Desikachar comes across as a completely earthy person who finds himself in close proximity to a legend. I liked his writing style. A good addition to my yoga library.
A Loving Tribute.......2001-07-18
You do not have to be a serious practitioner of Yoga to appreciate the warmth that Desichakar brings forth in this tribute to his father. This is a story told from the heart, of a sons admiration and love of one of the foremost Yogis to have lived. I found myself finishing the book in less than a day. For those not familiar with the essence of Yoga as art, philosophy and science, this book offers an easy to comprhend overview of this timeless tradition which offers an incomparable richness to anyone who begins the journey. Krishnamacharya's devotion, compassion, and uncompromising discipline are an inspiration. This is Yoga beyond the commercialization and dilution of the art that is now so prevalent in the West.
Lacks real content.......2001-04-28
Whilst I am in awe of Sri Krishnamacharya and have been for many years, this book, written by his son, is a very difficult and dry read. At page 81, I just gave up and getting to that page took me a couple of months! It is also tiring to constantly read how great Sri K. was - I know that already!
There is very little if any information on the discoveries that Sri K. made from studying Sanskrit literature sprinkled all over India. There is also very little information of his life, hardships and realtionships with his chief disciples.
Interpretation of the Patanjali Sutras is also done from a very physical Hatha point of view which I have never agreed with - see "Bringing the Inner God to Life" by Swami Shankarananda Giri or learn Kriya Meditation to see what I mean. The book by Swami Shankarananda Giri is a translation of Patanjali's Sutras and goes much deeper and beyond Hatha Yoga and presents more logical arguments.
A pleasure to read, a joy to hear.......2000-06-05
Unlike "Autobiography of a Yogi," this work is not about magic but about the living tradition of yoga, and of a yogi skilled in all six Ways of Viewing, a wanderer, who journeyed for years on end learning the Vedic teachings, finally settling in south India to live yoga and raise a family. Not quite a biography, this book is a mixture of reminiscences, teachings and photographs of the author's father, Sri Krishnamacharya. One of my favorite stories describes Krishnamacharya's journey to a temple known long ago for its learned teachers. When he arrived by foot, exhausted, the gateskeeper suggested he first nap outside the grounds. Later, inside, he met a great teacher "seated beneath a banyan tree granting knowledge to all his disciples" and promptly memorized all his words upon recitation---only to awaken outside to the self-same gateskeeper, who slyly asked if he had found what he was looking for. The lost teachings had been transmitted in a dream. There is much more than this, of course, including many practical aspects and insights on all 8 limbs of classical yoga. There are two related shortcomings in this otherwise superb book. First, look at the fine "Essence of Yoga" by Desikachar's student, B. Bouanchaud. The frontispiece is a drawing by Krishnamacharya depicting Patanjali surrounded by his four students. These students represent the four books of the Yoga Sutras, the same teachings having been presented differently and with different emphases for each student. This skill-in-means is fundamental to Krishnamacharya's whole approach to yoga. While three of his students (B.K.S. Iyengar, Indra Devi, T.K.V. Desikachar) are mentioned here, I was surprised to read all 211 pages and find that A.G. Mohan, Krishnamacharya's fourth student for 18 years, was not mentioned once. (Lest there be any doubt, see Krishnamacharya's warm dedication to Mohan's fine book, "Yoga for Body, Breath and Mind.") This oversight taints a full appreciation of Krishnamacharya's true living tradition. Also, I believe there is something more to yoga and healing than the "We care" attitude emphasisized later in the book, but that emphasis may be related to the author's caring, sociable nature. That said, this is a marvelous book about an extraordinary man, well-written by an accomplished yogi who knew him well. There is something poignant in the author's tale of his own expedition to the Himalayas, searching for the cave where his father's guru lived and taught, the plight of a modern man who, like most of us, cannot wholly comprehend Krishnamacharya's accomplishments in the Vedic tradition. There are lessons here for us all. Don't miss it for the world.
Simply the best single volume on yoga I've read........1998-09-02
Eloquent and accessible, Desikachar's tribute to his father not only accomplishes it's aim, but also illuminates the origins of indian philosophy and offers insight into the Hindu culture. Easily read, this is a wonderful source of information for not only practioners, but for everyone interested in this ancient science, and the man, who in all humility could be called the father of modern yoga.

Fighter Combat: Tactics and Maneuvering
ASIN: 0004708229 |
Book Description
Fighter Combat in the Jet Age covers the entire history of jet fighters in action, from the end of World War II to the present. Meticulously detailed, it features 300 photos, line drawings and graphs that reveal how jet fighters and their weapons have developed and improved, utterly changing the face of air combat. It also focuses on the key technological developments of the Cold War, such as the fighters built to intercept nuclear bombers and to dominate European skies in a Third World War.
With combat examples from Southeast Asia, the Falklands and the Middle East, Fighter Combat in the Jet Age compares and contrasts the fighter aircraft of different nations and manufacturers. Also included are spreads with sidebars and boxes describing fighter tactics, major air battles, experimental weapons and famous pilots. It's enough to thrill aircraft enthusiasts of all ages.
Customer Reviews:
Great Factual account of the jet age.......2000-05-19
I am a young plane enthusiast and I found this book very well written and informative. It takes the form of chapters which each cover a certain era(WW2, Korean War, Vietnam, etc). These chapters each have great stories in them, while at the same time they present great facts that are hard to find anywhere else. It is very interesting and will keep you on the edge of your seat/chair/whatever. I reccomend this book for anyone who is interested in planes at all, young or old.
A very well written and documented book.......1999-01-05
After having opened this book I was very glad to see that the author had gone to no expense at collecting information of air battles and the tactics that derived from them. From the end of WWII until the Cold War era the book is rich in illustrations and historic facts. Most of this information is probably unknown to most aircraft enthusiasts. The comments and conclusions to the jet era and combat tactics that followed are more than well elaborated. Perhaps the slight downfall, the only one that is, seems that as from the Cold War to present day the book seems to have lost some of its momentum. There is less information concerning the Israelis numerous conflicts compared to the Korean or Vietnam era. However, in general this book has many outstanding photographs and is very well documented. One might add that this recommendable book deserves a very good place on any bookshelf.
A Brief History of the Jet on Air Combat.......1998-05-06
The introduction of the combat jet has had a profound effect on how a battle is won or lost, and Mr. Isby has done a wonderful job of capturing the history of jet air combat from its roots in WW2 to the battlefields of the near future. Each chapter focuses on a particular topic, such as Cold War aircraft development, battle strategy, introduction of the missile and other technologies, and its application in a combat environment. This isn't a book about the aviation adventure - don't expect to get pulled into the cockpit very often. What you get is a very "readable" history of air combat since WW2, including some of the lesser known skirmishes. The book is chock-full of photographs (my favorite is the photo of the Argentinian Mirage buzzing the British destroyer in the Falklands War) and is printed on glossy paper. The more I read about air combat, the more I realize how much I learned from this book. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in military history and aviation.
A valuable asset for students of aviation history.......1998-03-25
Mr. Isby has done a very commendable job of putting forth the history of jet air combat, starting from the Me-262 and continuing through to the future, including some of the less-documented skirmishes in the Middle East and Africa. Each section is approximately 2 to 3 pages long, with sidebars and photographs, printed on glossy paper. His assertions are right on the money when he analyzes what tactics worked during certain periods of time and what tactics failed. The only point I disagree with is Mr. Isby's statement that the P-47 represented the apex of propeller fighter design. I can name 3 aircraft off the top of my head that would make better examples than the P-47: the Spitfire (which was there when WW2 started and was still the front line fighter when WW2 ended), the P-51 Mustang (which was still operational during Korea), and the F4U Corsair (which also saw action in Korea, alongside the jet-powered Panthers and Cougars). Other than that, his information is top notch and well illustrated.

Book Description
This work is a path-breaking study of the changing attitudes of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa to Britain and the Commonwealth in the 1940s and the effect of those changes on their individual and collective standing in international affairs. The focus is imperial preference, the largest discriminatory tariff system in the world, and a potent symbol of Commonwealth unity.

Birders Guide to Maine.......2005-07-20
This book is an excellent guide to birding in Maine. You are given directions to all the great birding sites, plus a list of birds you should see there. I am enjoying the book and have used it on several occasions.
If you do any birding in Maine, you need this book........2000-08-11
This is the best regional bird guide I have ever read. Not only is it indispensable for birders, but its a great guide for anyone who wants to find new places to explore. It is everything you would want in a birding guide.
