Essential 'Liner Buff Resource.......2007-02-17
This book together with the other Wm. Miller books in this series are excellent resources for those fascinated with Ocean Liners and their history. Wonderful and extensive photos take the reader from the Edwardian interiors of the turn-of-the-century Liners thru to the modern interiors of the few current Liners still operating.
There is one possible disappointment: if you are looking for an extensive offering of Titanic interior shots you won't find them. RMS Titanic receives no special attention here. What you do see from both the Titanic class and their contemporaries is suprising, excellent and varied.
A very fine, small book.
My favorite ship book........2006-04-06
William Miller is my favorite ship historian/author, and this is my most treasured book of his. There's never been a better collection of pristine ocean liner interior photos in one book! I'm always amazed at the sights of these classic liners!
Live the past..........2003-06-01
...through the wonderful pictures in this resource. The book includes photos from beloved ocean liners throughout the 20th century. For those of us too young to experience more of the golden era of ocean travel than the Queen Mary, this is a great way to catch up vicariously.

They Don't Make 'em Like This No More!!!.......2000-09-10
If you have grown weary over the glitzy, tacky cruise ships sailing the high seas today, buy this book and step back in time when ships were ships. No neon here, just lots of polished woods and brass, the way God intended. Mr. Miller's commentary complements the stunning interior photographs of most of the great liners and cruise ships of bygone days and up til present time. The NORMANDIE, REX, QUEENS MARY and ELIZABETH, even the infamous, tragic TITANIC. The high point seems to be the 20's and 30's, when Art Deco was the range, and the low point, IMO, the 50's and 60's, with that horrible Scandinavian Modern.
If the book has any flaws, it is that it focuses too much on transatlantic liners, and not enough on liners from other routes. Still, it is a must for ocean liner fans. Perhaps Mr. Miller will update this book and include some other liners.

Book Description
The fast progress in computer networks and their wide availability is complemented with on one hand the "explosion" of mobile computing and on the other hand the trends in the direction of ubiquitous computing. The merger of these technologies acts as a powerful enabler for new forms of highly dynamic collaborative organizations and the emergence of new business practices.
Early efforts in the area of virtual enterprises (VE) were strongly constrained by the need to design and develop horizontal infrastructures aimed at supporting the basic collaboration needs of consortia of enterprises. Current trends, however, are more and more directed to the development of new vertical business models and corresponding support tools. In parallel to these efforts, after the first euphoria of the E-commerce wave and the disappointments caused by some simplistic approaches then adopted, there is a shift towards Business-to-Business solutions, as a way to effectively enable E-commerce. This is therefore a time of convergence of the virtual enterprise and e-business developments.
This book contains selected articles from PRO-VE 2000, the second working conference on Infrastructures for Virtual Enterprises, which was sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and held in Florianópolis, Brazil in December 2000. The included articles represent relevant examples of the current state of the art in virtual enterprises and support for electronic business. Together with a diversity of application domains, the emphasis is mostly on: the new forms of virtual organizations, support for agility, modeling and execution of distributed business processes, management of enterprise clusters, distributed/federated information management, knowledge management, logistics for electronic commerce, and safe communication. In other words, the book is mainly focused on the management of business-to-business cooperation in virtual and smart organizations.
The implantation of electronic business and the virtual enterprise area is not only a technological problem. Therefore, aspects such as socio-organizational transformations, training needs, legal and ethical issues, and intellectual property rights, are also addressed in the book.
E-Business and Virtual Enterprises is essential reading for researchers, engineers, practitioners, and engineering students in production engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, organizational science, and industrial sociology.

Mortgage Loans "What's Right For You ?".......2001-01-04
I am in the market for my 1st home that is a reason I have read several " mortgage books ". I highly recommend this book. The author explained different loans in great details. He also including a current realistic budget I used before getting over my head. I am confidence I will save money on my new purchase. The only down fall I wished there was a current issue. I would like to have compared 1997 to 2001 editions, to see if the loan process has changed into the 21st century.

Book Description
This text provides a critical analysis of the social construction of childhood and children's agency. Through an interdisciplinary synthesis combining social theory, social policy and the empirical findings of social science research, it bridges the current gap between theory and practice, offering an incisive theoretical account of childhood that is grounded in substantive areas of children's lives such as health, education, crime and the family. This furthers understanding of the impact of policy on children's everyday lives and social experiences.

The operational bible of the Mayaguez Incident.......2006-08-28
If you have a copy of this book, hang on to it. It is not likely to go back into print anytime soon, and used copies are becoming both scarce and expensive. My own copy is tattered and dog-eared--a testament to how much I referred to it in writing my novel of the same incident.
Besides the all-too-appropriate title, one of the things you'll like about this book is Guilmartin's collection of time/date-sensitive maps that do an exceptional job bringing a complex operation into sharp focus.
A few words about the author, John Guilmartin. He is a been-there-and-done-it kinda guy. An Air Force Academy grad, he flew HH-53s with the Jolly Green Giants. He is also a fine scholar, having taught at the university level since retiring from the Air Force. He now graces the halls of West Point's history department where I hope his students are paying strict attention. 'Much to learn, they have!'
--Ejner Fulsang, author of "A Knavish Piece of Work," Aarhus Publishing
Why three men were left behind still puzzles me........2003-08-12
A very detailed and fascinating first hand account of the action on Tang Island, this work should be read along with Ralph Wetterhahn's "The Last Battle." Though both accounts are spell-binding, I still cannot really fathom why everyone sailed away after the battle when it became known that three young Marines had been inadvertently left behind on the island during the nighttime withdrawal under fire. Something ugly happened here, not yet fully explained.
This is the way it was.......2001-07-03
Guilmartin has written an excellent book that accurately describes what happened at Koh Tang Island. As a pilot that was there, I find the book to be a straight forward account of both the good and the bad. He has taken time to research the battle from both the Air Force and the Marine point of view. Using interviews from people who were there, sorting out the contradictions and fog of war. His insights into helicopter operations and the overuse of command and control should be required reading for all military officers. Guilmartin can be counted on for accuracy in all of his writings. Highly recommended for all students of military history.
A Definitive Account.......1999-12-28
As an AF Lt., I flew in the Mayaguez operation the day before the assault. My perspective from the back seat of an F-4 wasn't as immediate as the Jolly and Knife pilots who experienced it up close and personal. My friend Terry Ohlemeier was Knife 22, and his piece of the war was a lot hairier than mine. I took several history courses from Mr. Guilmartin when he was an instructor at the Air Force Academy. He was an excellent teacher, and I was glad to see that his research and source materials are equal his considerable teaching abilities. This book provides a glimpse into how national security planners dealt with this incident as America's Vietnam involvement was ending. Veterans will appreciate the roll call of the major players and events, others will appreciate a definitive account of a very short (and generally overlooked) "war."
Great book to obtain the full story of the Mayaguez Operatio.......1998-05-30
As a former marine who was part of the assault on the island, I learned alot of information I never knew at the time. It was a very humbling experience to find out how close I came to death during the intense fire fight after the landing. This is a very good book for future operation planners to read to ensure that they schedule the proper equipment and have up to date intelligence before a combat operation like this is executed.

As ornithologist Kenn Kaufman recounts in his lively memoir Kingbird Highway, he's managed to do what other birders only dream of doing: take a year and chase winged creatures from one end of the country to another. The year in question was 1973, when Kaufman was 19 years old, and a few dollars and an outstretched thumb could go a long way. Armed with binoculars, notebook, and the blessing of birder patron saint Roger Tory Peterson, Kaufman set out to capture the record for most species spotted in a single year. He came close, closing with 666 species sighted from Alaska to Florida and back again. More important, he racked up a lifetime's worth of adventures on the road. These stories form the heart of his book, a narrative in which spotted redshanks, white-eared hummingbirds, marbled murrelets, and black-capped gnatcatchers are among the chief supporting players.
Book Description
Now revered as one of North America's top birders, Kenn Kaufman hit the road at age sixteen and spent a year crisscrossing the country to see as many birds as he could, in a birding competition known as a Big Year. In what has become a classic among birders, this memoir chronicles the subculture of birding in the 1970s and a young man's search for his place in the world, complete with wild adventures and some quirky characters.

Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Birds.......2007-02-10
Written many years after the fact, this book is well worth reading many years after the fact. Kingbird Highway is an autobiography, a travelogue, and a `where-to-bird' guide for 1973. It is a tale of life, liberty, and the pursuit of birds. Kingbird, alias Kenn Kaufman drops out of high school to pursue his dream (obsession) of seeing more birds in a single year than anyone had ever seen before. There are several catches to his liberty and pursuit of birds. He must see the birds north of Mexico, a technicality that affects his dream. He has almost no money, so he does cheapest Big Year ever with the lowest dollar to bird ratio ever. He spends only about $1000 by hitchhiking everywhere and living off Little Friskies in a can of cold soup for dinner. Kingbird Highway provides a wonderful map of where to bird even now over forty years later. For example, the Brownville Texas Municipal dump is still the place to see Tamaulipas crows. Read in conjunction with a field guide, Kingbird Highway opens a world of birds, their habits, and habitats that might otherwise escape notice.
Different than expected.......2006-11-04
This is a good book, but not what I expected. It's about a specific time in birding and America. This makes Kenn Kaufman's experience unique. This was during the "early days" of birding and bird listers. There was not the instantaneous information of the location of rare species we have now. If you are interested in birding, the search for rare bird species, or the effort to see bird species out of their normal range, I would recommend this book.
Great book for birders.......2004-10-19
Kenn Kaufman began birding at an early age, and as a young teenager he hid his "geeky" habit from his friends. Eventually, as he became older, he realized that there was a birding fraternity and he began to bird with others who loved it as much as he did. At 16, with his parents' blessing, he dropped out of school and began doing cross-country birding by hitchiking around the country. His knowledge of birds grew and his contacts with other birders increased. In 1973 he decided to go for a Big Year, that is a year in which he attempted to break the record for most birds seen in a year. The pace of Kaufman's quest was amazing and he relates his adventures in an interesting and down-to-earth style. Towards the end of his Big Year, Kaufman begins to question his own motives for building up his list and his introspection brings a new maturity to him and his methods of birding. This is a great book for any bird enthusiast.
A road book with a passion.......2003-10-18
I read this book a couple of years ago ,haven't been writing reviews for long;but thought I would go back to this fine effort.I've read a lot of " road" books by some of the best; such as Heat-Moon,Kerouac,Mc Murtry,Peterson/Fisher,Steinbeck,Teale,Caldwell ;but as good as these were, none were written with the passion and self involvement that Kaufman brings to this book.He didn't set out to roam the country to escape, find himself,to discover the people or country. He set with the purpose of finding as many bird species as he could in one year ; wrote a book about it,and even though the goal was not just to write a book; he produced one that is as good as the "best".As a Birder ,we have all experienced many of the things he did ;but without the endurance, passion and commitment that he did.I thought I experienced cold along the Niagara River looking for Gulls in the Winter;but this was mild compared to sleeping in a car on the East coast when it was "cold as an Eskimo's tomb",eating from a can of cold soup at the ABA onvention,or having "his" scope blown away during a storm while doing the Christmas Bird count. If you like road books;but even more so if you enjoy nature/birding you just gotta read this gem !In my opinion he is right up there with the best of them.
Kaufman Becomes a Birding Fanatic.......2003-08-02
Great read. Any serious birder will like it as will a general audience that likes books along the lines of William Least-Moon.

Vicarious Mexican Birding.......2006-12-12
I would assume that if you are interested in this book it is because of a future or past birding or natural history tour of Mexico. This book is a great trip and will tantilize you with the biological treasures of places that you dream about or rekindle the memories of places you have visited. If you are familiar with birding trip reports such as found in Blake Maybank's site, this is similar but with a more literary touch. These are stories of great places told by a very well informed naturalist.
This is not a site guide like Howell's or Wheatly & Brewer's books. There are no detailed directions or maps here and some places, even the very well birded San Blas area, are not included in the book. It is still a pleasure to read and will give you some practice on what to expect in the deserts, thorn scrub, cloud forests, and tropical lowlands of Mexico. There are good references to other natural history studies of the country and excellent sections on practical travel information. A very worthwhile read.
Also for readers that enjoy this book Roland Wauer has also written an excellent guide in "A Birder's West Indies" for all the islands of the Caribbean Sea.
A Good Read.......2002-09-06
This is a pleasant, well-written book, that transported me throughout some of Mexico's natural regions from my armchair. Those with experience searching for birds in Mexico will find that this book awakens charming memories. Others may long wistfully to explore the beautiful and unusual habitats found south of the border. I particularly liked chapter 12 - "Place of the Tufted Jay", which included a photo of the Hotel Villa Blanca, where I have also stayed while pursuing the local endemic, the Tufted Jay. The author watched Swifts from the roof of the hotel.
A Birder's Mexico.......2000-04-16
This classic is a "must" for any birder studying for a Mexico trip. Species, tips on finding them, and areas of interest are wonderfully described. Details on plants and trees are a big plus as these are hard to come by elsewhere. After looking in vain for Wauer's book, I'm delighted it's back in print. A good companion to Howell's Finding Birds in Mexico.
