Historic Preservation: Curatorial Mgmt of the Built World.......2000-10-03
The content is, of course, excellent, and deserves 5 stars. The editing, however, is shoddy and annoying. It's a pity Fitch couldn't see a professional copy of his classic work before he died.
There are misspelled words: "ideed" vs. "indeed," p 13; "pressence" vs. "presence," p 55; "centure" vs. "century," p247; "Sienna" vs. "Siena," p 329, and others). Wrong dates are given: "...completely reconstructed to an assumed date of 1976" vs. 1776, p 275. Different information is given regarding the same process: ("flourescent dyes had to be added," p 338 vs. "had to be stamped with a metal die," p 342). LeMoyne is referred to as "LeMoyne" and as "Lemoyne," pp 17 & 18; Anne Cunningham is referred to as both "Anne" and "Ann," pp ix, x, 89, 90. Comma and semicolon use is weak, the use of italics with foreign words is inconsistent.
Curatorial Management of the Built World, Historic preservat.......2000-04-22
A very fine book and is used in my graduate "Philosophy of Preservation" course at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia. We are the largest undergraduate and graduate preservation program in the country and this book is of the quality that we demand.

The Keepers of Light: A Review.......2006-03-06
This book is the primary source of knowledge for those who are new to alternative photographic processes. It is a must read for those who wish to know the history of photography, and who wish to dive into alternative processes. It gives a brief history of each process, and then practical knowledge to aid the reader in accomplishing each process. I would recommend this book to all my colleagues and friends interested in photography.
I've had this book for years . . . .......2005-09-26
. . . And it looks it. I can't tell you how many times I've referred to this book. It is one of the most - if not the most - useful book for nonsilver photographic processes I've ever had and I have quite a collection of this type of book.
I don't think you can go wrong owning a copy of this volume.
The keepers of light.......2001-12-19
This is a great book it help me gain notion on the history of photography and alo show me ways to do photography the old way
Worth the Wait!.......2000-01-29
Well, after asking endless questions to some of the "so called" self-acclaimed "experts" in the field of wet plate photography; Crawford's book was a breath of fresh air. I only wish that I could have come across this book early in my search. Instead I had to wade through BBS systems with adults who like to dress up and play "war" (i.e., the Civil War). With this book you will be able to bypass all of the fruitless searches you will have if you ask present day practitioners, who do not want to share the process (or are more likely unknowledgeable themselves). Save yourself the problems, efforts and misinformation. Buy this book!
The best resource for non-silver photographic printmaking.......1999-02-19
I lost my first copy and just bought another. Learn the history and the how-to's of several non-silver printmaking methods. If you're interested in these processes, this book will give you an excellent overview and get you started on making your own prints.

Book Description

Just what I needed.......2003-04-11
This guide provided just what I needed. I've already got my Realter's license and just wanted a simple, accesible source to guide me through my job search. The WetFeet guide provided a simple industry break down along with loads of resources for researching and contacting the larger national firms. I especially liked the Real People Profiles that described actual jobs that people had. It made it very easy to picture myself doing the same job.
The Guide for Career-Minded Realters.......2003-02-20
I found this guide really helpful because it highlighted a whole world beyond that of just a Real Estate Agent, which is what I've always had in mind. This is a great resource for people interested in the large scale real estate industry, especially in commercial and corporate. If working for a large, national, diversified real estate company is what you aim for, this is the guide for you. I have now narrowed down my search to focus on the companies that most appeal to me, and this is based on solid information, not just opinions. The "On The Job" section was also helpful in showing me the differences, pros, and cons, among the various career paths. This is a great guide for those who aspire to have a full-time career in real estate.
Getting my real estate license.......2003-02-20
this was helpful for me in terms of giving me some good ideas and leads for what to do once i get my real estate license. i especially liked the background information on the industry landscape, from REITs to brokerage to property management. I'm excited at the prospect at starting small and then continuing to try new things in this potentially lucrative industry. and i'm definitely ready for a change from sales to real estate.

Practical, useful, and inspiring.......2005-07-14
When I first checked this out with several other time management books from the library, I decided to start with it figuring I could skim through it quickly and get on with the 'real deal.' I started speeding through the first chapter then quickly slowed myself down again. Filled will excellent information on managing your time, I found myself taking notes to keep track and remember them all. Now I've set a schedule for myself, and as I work through my day several of the things she talked about keep me going. "Do it. Do it right. Do it right now." "Even a little progress is still progress." etc. Not as new as plenty of the books out there, but not a bit of the information was outdated. Highly recommended!

Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2006-04-20
Confessions upfront: My husband has become a WWII collector--and anything about that time interests him (and I hear about it). Why? His father was in the 8th Army Corps of Engineers and left a wife and two small boys alone at home. WWII shaped the way both of his parents looked at the world until their final breath.
YANK, the Army Weekly was a magazine written and managed completely by men in the army--many who where cartoonists, artists, photographers and reporters before.
The Mail Call section was letters from soldiers who could beef about something--no matter on which of the six continents he was stationed.
With a circulation of 2,250,000, each issue cost the soldier five cents because it was thought if the soldier paid, he'd respect it more. It had 21 editions in 17 countries. Much of the magazine was produced at headquarters in New York City and then shipped for printing around the world where local staff added a few stories for that area.
YANK was read because it was believable--telling about the indignation and frustration. The staff members were also lowly soldiers who understood all to well the boredom and moments of terror of the EM (enlisted men). Their rank excluded them from the same privileges of the fighting soldier. They understood--and that was shown in the articles, photos of soldiers, cartoons and letters. They also understood the loneliness, thus the great photos of pin-ups (beautiful women).
YANK was the authentic voice: friend, confidant and entertainer. Wonderful stories, sad stories and much more, including great photographs, make up this book. You will enjoy it if you like history from the common man's viewpoint or just personal stories.
Armchair Interviews says: On the scene and on the money, YANK's hard-working and risk-taking staff spoke to soldiers who now speak to us through this book. Great gift for fathers or grandfathers or your local library or senior center.
I grew up learning of YANK.......2006-03-28
There is not much more I can add because so much has already been covered in the current reviews. I would, however, like to say THANK YOU to Barrett McGurn for his work on this book and....for inlcuding my father, Mason Pawlak in this book. Please see page 50 and others to include pg. 45, "Pawlak's cover photo of Angaur", where my dad received his purple heart after an explosion. I grew up viewing photos, listening to many stories and of course watching the old time show, 'Combat' in our home. I am very proud of my dad and all other service men who gave me my freedom. I am also proud of the most difficult task of fighting a war and carrying many cameras and being in the front lines to bring the stories of this battle back to life for all of us. Pictures tell stories and give us each fragments of the past....I am eternally grateful to all who served, shared, died and lived to tell in beautiful masterpieces such as this! I love you dad, your daughter.
Greatest Generation, Greatest Reporters..........2005-09-13
The Greatest Generation also produced some great artists and writers - from Bill Mauldin and Andy Rooney to Ralph Martin and Barrett McGurn - men who covered the war "up front" and - being on the side of the average "GI" - more than once caught the wrath of high-ranking military "brass"(e.g. George Patton).
For millions of enlisted men and women of "The Greatest", YANK was a common consciousness - and through the letters column, their common voice. How the magazine began, ran, survived, and earned its ultimate tribute - the trust and affection of soldiers, sailors, airmen in every theater of war - is a story McGurn tells through his personal experience from the battle line to MacArthur's anteroom.
His account of the men who risked - and sometimes lost - life to get YANK's stories and photos adds a special dimension to the history of WW II. They were there. McGurn's book takes you with them all the way.
YANK survived because General George Marshall had the wisdom to appreciate its major contribution to the morale of its millions of readers - men and women we now know as The Greatest Generation. How YANK did this is a great read.
Back When We Were All Called 'Yanks.'.......2005-07-11
This unique history of a unique war 'necessity' includes photos and remembrances of a war correspondent, Barrett McGurn, who covered the Western Pacific for fourteen months in 1943-44, and his associates as they put together YANK for the soldiers out on the field.
This was written for the combatants in all the different services in the War. It was free to the troops in combat and considered an official War Department publication. The five-cent price for all others was a token rate because 'the theory was that no one would read what he received for free.' Many things were censored, but it is the record of the enlisted men as they recorded the true happenings in their own way in a week-by-week diary. Some wrote poems to express their despair and loneliness away from their families 'back home.'
It went on sale for the first time June 17, 1942 and was dreamed up by Colonel White. Designed by President FDR and Secretary of War Stimson as a way to let the military at the lowest levels 'blow off steam' and also read what others were thinking, the circulation exceeded 2.5 million in forty-one countries and the readership topped four million.
George Baker created the "Sad Sack" cartoon which made him popular after the war ended. Mr. McGurn, at the age of 25, in 1939 had gone abroad as a foreign correspondent for the 'Tribune.' He had started out as a cub reporter in the late '30s on the 'New York Herald Tribune.' He wrote "The United Nations was about to be founded in San Francisco. It would put an end to wars!" Don't we wish?!
After Joe McCarthy (no relation to the senator from Wisconsin) took over as editor of YANK, the paper included a weekly pinup of women "to boost morale." Betty Grable was by far the most popular. Others included Dinah Shore, Jane Russell, Ava Gardner, Jean Harlow, Gypsy Rose Lee, Barbara Stanwyck, and Ingrid Bergman (shown in the book on the cover as a farm girl).
There were 150 editions total during the War. The last cover showed a copy of an Army 'Honorable Discharge' certificate "as a testimonial of honest and faithful service to this country" signed by Dwight W. Eisenhower. This was a one of a kind publication, never to be repeated. The photos are varied and interesting, but the written report of action in New Guinea and the Phillippines was history in the making.
Mr. McGurn has written AMERICA'S COURT: SUPREME COURT, PILGRIM'S GUIDE TO ROME, and DECADE IN EUROPE. He spent twenty years in Europe, North Africa, and Asia as a correspondent and then a Foreign Service officer.
The soldiers' magazine.......2005-06-13
This book covers something about World War II that is completely new to me: a news magazine put out by soldiers for soldiers. It is a history of "YANK", a publication done completely by enlisted men, for the typical enlisted soldier. Although there were officers in charge, the content was exclusively done by the EMs. The worldwide corespondents, artists and cameramen often put therselves in serious danger to "get the story" and present it to their readers. There wasn't any sugarcoating of the news, and officers took a real beating in the pages of this paper. I can imagine my own father, resting somewhere beside his tank in Europe, reading this publication, and thoroughly enjoying it! This is a very good subject about which most of us in this generation know nothing, so I highly recommend reading this book!

Good Things Come in Small Packages.......2003-11-18
One of my favourites, and will surely become yours!
Colour-coded sections cover 1. Pre-Saxon Rule; 2. Scotland, Ireland, and Wales; 3. Saxons, Normans and Plantagenets; 4. Tudors and Stuarts; 5. Hanover to Windsor. The Compendium (part 6) includes Crown Jewels, Nicknames, and Genealogical Charts.
It is particularly good on ancient British chiefs and Celtic tribes, rarely covered in other guides. A short two-page overview of each monarch is preceded by a summary box containing birth and death dates and places, parentage, accession to the throne, coronation, authority (i.e. status and titles), death date and burial details.
The major public and personal events of each reign are outlined. Also, there are features on such events as the Roman Conquest, the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms, Wars of the Roses, the Gunpowder Plot, Home Rule and the British Empire. Contemporary illustrations, e.g. the Bayeux Tapestry for the Norman Conquest, lend period flavour.
A perfect introduction, overview, or review. It's a useful first source before proceeding to longer royal histories or individual biographies.
Essential.

A compact gem of a guide packed with facts.......2007-01-10
A wonderful, compact guide to the rulers of England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland and Great Britain. While this book also includes some information on the Ancient British Kings and Queens, the Roman and Romano-British Rulers and the Anglo-Saxon monarchies, its real utility (for me) is the dynastic detail.
This book is not a substitute for more detailed works for those seeking in depth knowledge. However, for those seeking an outline of a reign, or a quick reminder of the wives of Henry VIII, the pedigree of Mary Queen of Scots or the progress from Stuart to Hanoverian rulers this little gem of a book is likely to contain all of the information you seek.
Highly recommended - especially to readers of historical fiction set in Britain who just want an overview of who ruled when.

Book Description
The Second Edition of Florida's Birds is a major event for Florida birders, new and old. Each section of the book is updated, and 30 new species are added. Also added are range maps for certain species and color coded guides to months when the bird is present and/or breeding in Florida. Now with color throughout, each bird is illustrated three times: with the text about the bird, in the index listing, and on a plate with similar species for help in identification. Thus, Florida's Birds is now an even better field guide. Unlike the other books available on the birds of Florida, Florida's Birds is also a reference that goes beyond its usefulness in the field. Sections on bird study and bird feeding provide practical advice for enjoying Florida's birds; and sections on bird habitats, threatened and endangered species, exotic species, and bird conservation will assist the reader in understanding the ecological and cultural landscapes that have created one of the world's unique avifaunas.
Customer Reviews:
Great for photographers and casual observers.......2007-08-23
I got this book for the purpose of identifying species while reviewing photographs I've taken. I haven't used it in the field (yet) but it has become an excellent reference guide. There is a lot of information, the decriptions are well-written and the sections about Florida ecology and environments are also helpful. I'm a native Floridian and I found myself frequently learning new things while reading this book. I highly recommend this book.
Looks good so far.......2006-03-27
I got this book to take along on a trip to Florida planned for a couple of months from now, so at this point it's too early to say exactly how helpful it is. However, based upon previous trips to Florida, it seems to be pretty good so far (although there are two birds I've previously seen that I still couldn't find in this guide).
2nd edition updates everything!.......2006-03-19
Florida-bound or resident bird-watchers won't want to be without the second edition of a classic state- specific field guide, FLORIDA'S BIRDS: A FIELD GUIDE AND REFERENCE. This is no reprint edition: each section of FLORIDA'S BIRDS has been updated and thirty new species added, along with range maps for species and color-coded guides to month of presence. Each bird is illustrated not once but three times, text discusses habitats and habits, and sections on bird study and feeding provide in-depth detail. A 'must' handbook for any with Florida roots.
Highly recommended for Florida ornithologists and bird lovers.......2006-01-10
Now in a newly revised and expanded second edition, Florida's Birds: A Field Guide And Reference is a wonderful guide for Florida birdwatchers. Every section has been updated, and 30 new species added. A brief introduction and overview leads into the species-by-species listings that include the names, description, habitat, range, life cycle summary, and a color-coded at-a-glance list of the months each species can be found within Florida. Perhaps most captivating of all is illustrator Karl Karalus' full-color renditions of each bird species, in a meticulous and lifelike manner reminiscent of Audubon himself, making Florida's Birds a delight to simply page through. Highly recommended for Florida ornithologists and bird lovers.
Disappointed in information--returned book.......2005-12-14
Eventhough I may not have really saved any money, I did not see any point in keeping this book once I received and reviewed it. I ordered for my son in law who lives on Fl coast and loves to fish coastal waters. He wanted a book to give information about the birds he saw then. I was hoping the size and information in this one would make it good for his purpose. This was not the case, however.
More than half of the book is concerned with ecological and birdwatching information--that is just not what he was looking for. I was disappointed in the size of photographs of the birds, but when so much is given to other aspects not that much room for bird information is left.
The quality of construction seemed good, but the spine is fairly narrow and the book needs to be opened fully to read all the text. It is possible that repeated readings may cause some pages to come loose.
On the hunt again
Customer Reviews:
Good book, lacking detail.......2007-08-29
Sure, it lacks a bit of detail that I would like about the birds. Sure some of the pictures do not seem to be that clear but shesh, this is field guide. This is small enough to carry with you and the color coding is awesome! If you are new to birding, like me, then get the book.
You can always buy books that have every little detail about the bird. Use those books to study the bird before you go out. This is for when you are out and go "What bird was that?". It was almost all brown... so go to the brown section.
I now have two of his books. Will get more as I go to that state.

One of the best field guides for the Florida bird watcher!.......2006-09-02
Mr. Stan Tekiela has established a reputation for his series of bird watching field guides. What's most unique about his approach is the fact he divides the guide by feather coloration rather than by species or groups of species. The sound recordings are of great quality and a must to have with the field guide. I highly recommend this book for those individuals who, like me, are just barely beginning to get their feet wet in this fantastic hobby of bird watching.
These are great for beginners and experienced birders.......2006-01-14
I have used a copy of Birds of Michigan for several years. I'll be in Orlando and Jacksonville this year and so got this for my trip. Many birds that occur in Florida are, no doubt, not included butwith several hundred documented species, it would be impossible to make a pocket guide like this with every potentially present bird.
My ONLY complaint about this series is that some birds are hard to find because they have several dominant colors and you might have to look in two or three sections to find it. But that's easier than scanning through 200-300 pages in my Peterson guide.
Where are the birds?.......2003-06-27
Many of Florida's most interesting or unusual birds are missing from this book. Whooping cranes, Limpkin, Red cockaded woodpeckers, all of special interest and missing.
Aracaras and Snail Kites are also missing. This is a potboiler.
Easy Identification for Beginners.......2003-04-17
I have this wonderful little book, and it has stimulated my bird watching immensly. The birds are seperated by color, so if you see a black bird, go to the black section. I recommend this book highly for children, beginners, the just curious. It is small, but the pictures will help alot. Love this book!!! Buy it I think it is worth every penny

Florida's Birds.......2007-05-13
I bought this for my husband, who uses it all the time. Whenever we have a new bird come to the yard he gets the book out to see what it is. It is very helpful.
Useful Guide for Florida.......2004-11-18
Identifies the major habitats in Florida such as sand pine scrub, mesic hammocks, salt marshes, etc. Features include about 50 pages with color artwork showing the birds (grouped by type). The adjacent page gives a brief description plus notes on preferred habitat, then refers the reader to another page for more detail on the bird.
Pluses: charts the months the bird is in Florida and also the breeding season, makes an effort to explain key differences in similar looking birds, the index is set up with little boxes so it can be used as a checklist also.
Minuses: pictures somewhat small and at times overcrowded (ducks), it's a nuisance to flip back and forth from the pictures to the detailed write ups.
Great for specificaly Florida birds.......2004-03-10
This is a great reference book for anyone who is interested just in birds that can be found in Florida. The drawings have enough detail that most birders from beginner to advanced intermediate should find them useful. I used this book for the first few years of birding and found it to be of great value. Many people may attempt to compare this to Sibley's Guides but I would have to say that each has its advantages. Sibley's often has too much detail and does not show just the birds that you may see in one specific area. This book show only Florida birds and groups them in a logic fashion that allows for fast reference. If you are in Florida bird watching (I strongly suggest it!) then you should find this book useful. This is not a replacement for the Sibley Guide but more of a quick reference book that can be used as the primary source. Go to Sibley's Guides for fine details when in doubt but unless you know exactly where to find each bird, this guide will be less frustrating.
My opinion.......2003-01-02
This field guide handy bird book to have around the house, but not so great in the field. The color illustrations offer limited variations for seasonal plumage and the color is very inaccurate. Most importantly the information and illustrations are in separate sections of the book making identification cumbersome. I recommend sticking to Sibley's or the National Geographic field guide.
Florida's Birds: A Handbook and Reference.......2001-07-11
Excellent color depictions, good cross referencing to information pages vs. habitat and picture pages. It is exactly as represented - a good reference guide.
