Historic Sacred Places of Philadelphia.......2006-03-23
I found the book very neautifully put together with fine photography. As another reviewer noted there are factual mistakes. One thing that consistently seems to be a problem with American Protestants is their lack of understanding of the Catholic Church. The authors have a section on Roman Catholics and then include Ukrainian Catholics under Orthodox. Why cannot they just make a section on Catholics and include Roamn Catholic and the other Catholic churches. Eastern Catholic churches recognize the pope, Orthodox do not. They are Catholic, not Orthodox. Again they are not Ukrainian Catholics of the Byzantinr Rite. The Ukrainian Catholic Church is one of seven Catholic churches that use the Byzatine Rite, the same set of ceremonies used by the Greek Orthodox and the Russian Orthodox. With the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral here in Philadelphia and the church having been admisistered here when it was abolished in the Ukrain by the Soviets, it would seem important for a writer to correctly identify them. They represent the second largest church within the Catholic Church. This understanding would especially seem important as more and more Eastern Christians whether Catholic, Orthox, Pseudo Othodox or Independents settle in Philadelphia. If it says Catholic, it is not Orthodox unless the fuller term Othodox Catholic is used.
What an anorak!.......2005-06-30
Mr. Moss seems to be an anorak, as this book seems to be poorly researched and contains many factual mistakes. He also implies that we should go and visit these churches just for their value as a building, which is quite silly. Churches are for worship and not museums. I for one am not going to bother people trying to worship just to look at the inside of a building!
If there was an option for no stars I would give it.
Beautiful!.......2005-04-28
Philadelphia has a bad habit of ripping down its historic buildings. Preservation of history is never on our council's mind.
Some of the most interesting historic places in Philadelphia are the cemeteries and the churches. This book highlights the churches, and, by extension, many of the burial grounds.
All religions are represented. And, because the Quakers were more accepting than others at the time, there are more religions to represent here than one would imagine.
The text is informative. The pictures are beautiful.
Pick one up and enjoy it!!

Both Stunning and Stimulating.......2005-01-18
As an Episcopal priest I was familiar with a number of the churches singled out in this gorgeous book, but I was as fascinated and awed by the stories and photographs of the churches I have never entered--but now long to!--as I was with the histories and photographs of the churches I know well. This is a book which will please anyone interested in Pennsylvania or Philadelphia history, church architecture, or the history of architecture, as well as anyone who simply likes to look at exquisite photographs. At the price quoted above, this is the steal of the century!

Awesome Book.......2007-08-29
This is a wonderful book of Bert Sterns photos and includes the last sitting of Marilyn Monroe.

Like a "Master's Class" in Commercial Photography.......2004-03-18
This book is part of a series, "Masters of Contemporary Photography," which was an outstanding effort to highlight the work of individual photographers, providing lots of behind the scenes information on the technique and process behind the images. I own the Bert Stern volume, which I purchase sometime in the 1970s. Not having read it in years, I recently returned to it and found it absolutely incredible in its depth and insight. Re-intrigued by the "series," I came here to Amazon to look into purchasing the other volumes, which are, unfortunately, out-of-print. (Back then, I didn't buy the more volumes because, as a teenager, I couldn't afford the $4.95 cover price!) I'll report back on the others when I receive more.
Fantastic if you can find it.......2002-07-14
How unfortunate it is that this book is out of print. Bert Stern is one of the greats of photography in the latter half of the 20th Century. This is the man that brought commercial photography to a new level, setting the standard for what could be done, and what would have to be matched by the rest of the industry. As a photographer myself, I have found his work in all forms, this book included, to be a major source of inspiration. I highly recommend this volume for anyone who can find a copy.

Wow! Lots of forms and info..........2001-11-26
This is a book for seasoned investors, brokers, and syndicators. It contains several hundred forms and checklists that will make sure you never forget an important element of the buying and selling process. However, it is not a "stand alone" book on real estate investing, but a book designed to accompany other texts on the subject.

Introduces and celebrates ordinary individuals.......2001-02-10
In The Lives And Legacies Of Everyday Heroes, Mark Britzman introduces and celebrates ordinary individuals who posses great character and who have established important legacies for future generations to consider and emulate. These "everyday heroes" are the kind of men and women we all want as family members, friends, neighbors, teachers, colleagues, and mentors. These are common people who's uncommon examples inspire us all to be everyday heroes our selves. Very highly recommended, positive, and inspiring reading.
Dr. Mark J. Britzman...........Outstanding Author!.......2000-11-02
I've known Dr. Mark J. Britzman for over 20 years and his character and integrity have always been solid and unquestioned!
A true paragon in the acme of his writing career! A strong positive "role model" himself as he champions the achievement of everyday people doing extraordinary things! His passion for people, especially young people, is legendary! He's also got a great sense of humor and a wonderful common-sense perspective.
Strongly recommend this author to everyone! Recommend he doubles the price of his book! So much value for such a low price! I wish him continued success and look forward to owning everything he produces!
The Lives and Legacies of Everyday Heroes.......2000-11-02
An exceptional book that lauds the everyday hero. Readers will be challenged to think of those who have made a difference in their own lives by actions of character.
A valuable reminder of the everyday heros in my own life........2000-10-24
In reading this book I recall the heros in my life and the difference that we as average people can make in the lives of those around us. We can change the world when we reach out to another person. This book is a gentle reminder of these things. Thank you to the author for offering us such a touching collection of stories.
WE NEED MORE BOOKS LIKE THIS!!!.......2000-10-02
The Lives and Legacies of Everyday Heroes inspires me to be a better me. I have met people like Dan the pilot, or the helpful higway patrol man, and this book reminds me of how important a role everyday heroes have had in my life. While popular culture teaches us to "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff," it is precisely because people care enough to go the extra mile and care for our "small stuff" that we can find a little kindness in our day to day lives. This book helped me to see how connected we are to each other, and how important it is for me to look for the little things to help be an "everyday hero" to those I encouter.
My kids enjoyed the stories in this book, and I can see them looking for ways to be a hero to others now by doing the right thing for the right reasons. This is a book for your family, your friends, and for your partner as you curl up together and take an inspiring trip through stories which will jog fond memories of those in your life who have meant so much to you, and inspire you to create those same memories for those you care for and encounter everyday.
Book Description
What fierce motivation drives warriors to commit themselves to a last stand against a more powerful and better-armed enemy? The reasons are countless: anger, fear, brotherhood, personal glory, and survival. These 13 examples of persistence against incredible odds come from two centuries worth of combat in Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America. Follow glorious battles from Napoleon and Wellington at Hougoumont to the bloody Civil War battle at Antietam to Pork Chop Hill in Korea.
Customer Reviews:
An O-K read.......2002-02-25
Not the best military history I have read, but will keep you interested. Expanded my knowledge of frontier lore. Most of the stories can be read within an hour, so it's a handy book for a vacation, or if you don't have time to get too in depth. Though I always question military histories written by those who have never been in the military.

A sympathetically written work.......2006-04-18
This is a sympathetically written account of the major Diasporas the Jewish people have known in their four- thousand year history. Comay nicely concludes with a book with a chapter on 'the ingathering' in the modern state of Israel.

Fold out card with pictures of birds.......2007-02-19
I assumed this would be more of a book. It is a fold out laminated card with birds. For each bird there is a picture, scientific name, and size. It is grouped by perching birds, water birds etc.
I was hoping for some more text for a first time bird watcher going to Hawaii.
Handy and Quick.......2006-03-03
I kept this lightweight piece with me at all times while walking around. There were abundant birds and I liked knowing their names.
Good for quick reference, bad for bird watchers.......2005-03-16
This is a great, small, fold out card for beginning bird enthusiasts who want a quick reference to birds in Hawaii. But if you are a bird watcher, or even close, this little pamphlet might not be for you. There are no details on the birds, their habitats, calls, etc. The pictures are good, but I expected more from this item.
Don't buy this expecting a book; it's just a small pamphlet with photographs. Overall it'll be useful, but it could be better if used as a supplement with a real bird watchers book for Hawaii.
"Hawaii Birds" Card -- Useful But Sad.......2004-06-01
This 22"x8.5" "Pocket Naturalist" card folds into six two-sided panels of about 3.5"x8.5". It's copyrighted 2003. Overall, I think it serves the purpose stated in its subtitle: "An Introduction to Familiar Species." The paintings are fairly easy to grasp, both common and scientific names are given, maximum lengths are indicated, and some birds have helpful notes (e.g., for ring-necked duck, "bill has a white ring"). I count 142 different species or subspecies. The last panel has 22 "birding hotspots and sanctuaries" on 4 islands. It's not intended for serious birding, but birdwatchers may wish to carry it to show non-birders what they are supposed to be seeing.
If I could advise the author and Waterford Press, I would suggest: (1) Update the common names and species according to the "Checklist of the Birds of Hawaii - 2002" that is available on the Hawaii Audubon Society Web site. For example: "Warbling Silverbill (Lonchura malabarica) has been changed to African Silverbill (Lonchura cantans)." (2) Add more native Hawaiian names for the birds. (3) Delete birds that are fairly common all over the U.S. (e.g., mallards, rock doves [pigeons], and house sparrows). (4) Add a note or code to indicate which of the remaining species are endangered or threatened.* For example, Hawaiian Goose (Nene), Hawaiian Duck (Koloa), Hawaii Petrel ('Ua'u), Newell's Shearwater ('A'o), Hawaiian Coot ('Alae Ke'oke'o), Black-Necked Stilt (the subspecies listed is the Hawaiian Stilt, A'eo), Peregrine Falcon, Hawaiian Hawk ('Io), Hawaiian Crow ('Alala), 'Oloma'o, Kama'o, Puaiohi, Kauai 'O'o, 'O'u, Palila, Maui Parrotbill, Nukupu'u, 'Akepa, Hawaii Creeper, Oahu Creeper, 'Akohekohe, and Po'ouli are endemic birds that fall into this category. (5) Add the 'Oma'o (Hawai'i Thrush, Myadestes obscurus) and 'Akikiki (Kauai Creeper, Oreomystis bairdi), which are non-threatened endemic* Hawaiian birds found on the Big Island and Kauai respectively. Also add the endemic 'Elepaio (Chasiempis sandwichensis), whose Hawai'i and Kaua'i subspecies are not threatened.
Buy this from Amazon.com!
* BTW, it's sad that so few Hawaiian birds that are endemic (i.e., that evolved and breed in Hawaii but nowhere else) are neither threatened nor endangered. Besides the 'Oma'o, 'Akikiki, and 'Elepaio mentioned above, the ones on the card are: Hawaiian Noddy (Anous minutus melanogenys, native name Noio, a subspecies of Black Noddy); Hawaiian Owl (Pueo); 'Anianiau; various 'Amakihi's; Maui 'Alauahio (Paroreomyza montana newtoni, a.k.a. Maui Creeper); 'Akeke'e; 'I'iwi; and 'Apapane. The other birds neither threatened nor endangered are human-introduced "aliens," indigenous (i.e., arrived and established themselves on their own), or just visitors.
Great for travel.......2004-03-30
I recently went on a trip to Hawaii, and, having an interest in birds, I wanted to be able to take an identification guide with me that wouldn't take up too much room. Being a fold-out, laminated thing made out of card-stock, this fit the bill perfectly. I was able to keep it in my purse and didn't have to worry about it getting crushed or ruined by spills. It does have pictures of all the most common birds, as well as their length and some (but not all, which was a bummer) have images of both sexes which is nice. I was lucky enough to spot zebra and spotted doves, a resplendent male red junglefowl (don't let the name fool you, it looks just like your garden-variety chicken), a red-crested cardinal, red-vented bulbul, house finch, common fairy tern, and several others. I didn't get into the rainforest while I was there, but if I did, this guide would come with me. It is a wonderful buy, and even if you don't agree, it's only six dollars. One thing I would like is that there was a little more information about the birds, but this is after all just a pocket guide.
