Book Description
This third edition of 'How Designers Think' has been substantially rewritten following the second edition which was first published in 1990. Bryan Lawson has continued to try and understand how designers think, to explore how they might be better educated and to develop techniques, including computer-aided design, to assist them in their task. A completely new chapter on 'Designing with drawings' has been added and all the others have either been fully revised or wholly rewritten.
How Designers Think is based on Bryan Lawson's many observations of designers at work, interviews with designers and their clients and collaborators. This extended work is the culmination of twenty-five years' research and shows the author's belief that we all can learn to design better. The creative mind continues to have power to surprise and this book aims to nurture and extend this creativity. This book is not intended as an authoritative description of how designers should think but to provide helpful advice on how to develop an understanding of design.
'How Designers Think' will be of great interest, not only to designers seeking a greater insight into their own thought processes, but also to students of design in general from undergraduate level upward.
* An original look at the changing role of the designer in society
* Fully illustrated
* Completely new chapter on 'Designing with drawings'
Customer Reviews:
absolutely excellent.......1999-11-06
I have followed the many editions of this book. It is a classic. In this latest offering, the author has managed to keep it up to date - not easy in today's fast changing world. Well done. Look forward to the next edition.
Book Description
Passing Gas
And Other Towns Along the American Highway by Gary Gladstone
"Explaining how to find her café in Gas, Kansas, Bonnie Steward said, `Come down Route 12, but if you blink, you'll pass Gas.'" Gas isn't all you'll be passing if you come along for the ride with author Gary Gladstone on a cross-country road trip across the U.S.A. With camera in hand and the penchant for the unexpected, Gladstone captures a photographic portrait of small towns with unusual names and the folks who keep them on the map with their (admittedly offbeat) civic pride. You'll meet bar buddies Don, Ron, and Flakey Jake from Goofy Ridge, Illinois; stop in at the mechanics shop in Nothing, Arizona, to confirm that Nothing really does sit in the middle of nowhere; and be regaled with colorful stories from the locals of Boogertown, North Carolina, about how the town got its name. So jump in the backseat of the car and get ready for an honest slice of apple-pie America, chock full of myths, legends, and laughs.

GREAT BOOK.......2007-03-30
I really enjoyed this book. The stories were interesting and the pictures very nice. A great book to have on the coffee table. It was in excellent condition and highly recommend this seller.
Passing Gas: And Others Towns on the American Highway.......2007-01-16
This was really interesting and not hard to read. Enjoyed the information and laughs.
Great Book! :).......2006-06-24
This is a good book. I live in Finger, TN (Should have been in the book too! LOL ), which is near Sweetlips TN. I used to tell people I live between Finger and Sweetlips and they would laugh.
This is my grandpa in the picture for Sweetlips. We didn't believe him at first when he said he was going to be in a book. And it is still funny to see his pic here. They also used it on VH1 best year ever. We all got a laugh out of that.
Seeing all the towns in this book makes me want to visit them all.
Gas is worth it to see small town USA and you'll feel good!.......2006-01-23
This book is rated G for "good fun" because the complete title is "Passing Gas and other Towns along the American Highway." I have a dream of one day getting on my fantasy American built Indian or Knucklehead motorcycle and seeing our beautiful Country. Gary Gladstone gives me a vicarous peek without leaving NYC and he makes me giggle too. Anything to do with "gas" humor can send me into giggle spasms but Gary's book is tame with rich color pictures of small towns with the funniest names and sweet humble stories that accompany the pictures. My favorites are, "Gas, Kansas","Boogertown" and "Scream", Alamba" ,"Rough and Ready,PA" "Romance, Arkansas" and there are so many more colorful names.
This book is a great gift for any friends that need some cheering up. It is quietly humorous, tame, fun and pleasurable for those that would like to either see more of Our Country or enjoy the characters as much as the countryside that make America truly rich!
A wonderful book.......2005-07-23
The book isn't a reference book on the origin of odd town names, rather it is a book of people in or around oddly named places across the country. The author collected maps and atlases from across the country and narrowed down the names to what you'll find in the book. His approach seemed to be two fold: either drive to the town and convince someone to pose or else call ahead and try to line up a subject through the law enforcement offices, etc. In either case, what he's done is give us wonderful portraits of not just people, but of the places they live or work near. For each town, he'd get the local folk's idea of where the name came from, often stories handed down from generation to generation.
The book is presented so that when you open the book, the photograph is on the right page and the dialog is on the left. Each town has about three-quarters of a page of writing, telling something about the person, the trip to the area, how the photograph came about, and the town. Both the picture and the writing are wonderfully crafted.
I've passed my book around and find that, without exception, everyone enjoys it. Quite a bargain for such good photographs.

Book Description
Business expectations of their IT departments are simple: Deliver IT without fuss, get involved in achieving business results, and provide leadership. But while business emphasis is on business results and leadership, IT is focused on the technology.
How to get your IT Department to Add Real Value to Business presents a practical framework that defines the roles and activities for the CIO to meet business expectations. It introduces a new approach to IT in large organizations, which shifts the focus from day to day technological operations to three critical areas of performance for IT: IT management, business results and information leadership.
The concepts are simple and elegant but the implementation is increasingly demanding. However, these changes are essential if in-house IT functions are to survive and prosper in organizations.
The author's framework has already proven itself in changing business and IT perspectives significantly. Large organisations have commenced the implementation process, and are reporting significant results. The book offers ground-breaking perspectives on the role of IT in organisations. These perspectives are finding favour with business and IT people alike. The book offers practical and anecdotal examples and plans to assist in implementing the framework.
*CIOs will benefit from a radically changed perspective on how they can gain real alignment and add real value to their business
*Business management will benefit from a new understanding of what they should expect from their IT functions
*Offers a new common language to talk meaningfully about IT and business issues

Book Description
A major Shi'i Muslim community with a long and eventful history, the Ismailis were until recently studied primarily on the basis of the accounts of their enemies, including the Sunni polemicists and the Crusader chroniclers. As a result, a host of legends were disseminated on the teachings and practices of the Ismailis. The study of Ismailism began to be revolutionized from the 1930s, with the recovery of a large number of Ismaili texts preserved in private collections. A Short History of the Ismailis brings together the results of modern scholarship on the highlights of Ismaili history and doctrines within the broader contexts of Islamic history and Shi'i thought.
Critically examining the Ismaili historiography and other types of relevant source materials, this book covers the main developments in all the major phases of Ismaili history, including the early formative period, the Fatimid and Ismaili golden age, and the Alamut and post-Alamut periods. It also examines the major schisms among the Islmailis as well as their more recent history.
Customer Reviews:
Good work of an historian, but ..........2007-09-04
If one knows it, one cannot fail to compare this book to Dr. Momen's introduction to Twelver Shi'ism:
An Introduction to Shi`i Islam: The History and Doctrines of Twelver Shi`ism
that sets the standards in works of this kind. F. Daftary's book does not meet the standard in several respects, e.g.:
- missing comparison of Ismaili jurisprudence to for example the Twelver Shi'ite and Maliki schools
- missing tables showing the synchronicity of political and theological developments
- missing maps of regions other than Persia - Iraq (e.g. the Fatimide caliphate)
The author's perspective of an exoteric historian leads him to mistaken explanations of some Ismaili doctrines, e.g. the cyclical nature of time. He tends to relegate the ulama (theologians) to a role of ideological support for those holding political power. The outer (zahiri) perspective contrasts with the balanced view of the Ismailis, e.g. as exhibited in the epistles of the Brethren of Purity.
In spite of many historic details, F. Daftary fails to explain or demonstrate what the essential specificity of Ismaili Shi'ite Islam is or purports to be.
Great book, by a worthy Scholor.......2001-08-26
Farhad Daftary is a noted international scholor, who has reseached many publications with such noted institutions as Oxford and Cambridge, this Book is a great testment to scholorship, and as such is objective throughout, mixing Glory with Disaster and even controversy, this is recommended for those who want a true picture of ismailis and their beliefs, instead of some of the bias and emtional conjecture that is also available.
Book Description
This durable journal is a must for birders of all skill levels, from novices just beginning to build a life list to veterans looking for the most up-to-date, systematic, and visually complete way to document sightings of even the rarest, most elusive birds. Based on the latest classifications by the American Ornithologists' Union and organized by family, its comprehensive, easy-to-use checklist itemizes every species recorded in North America, including accidental visitorsmore than 960 in all, each identified both by common and Latin names and illustrated with specially commissioned paintings by the finest bird artists at work today.
The Birder's Journal features a user-friendly page layout that directly mirrors the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America for quick access to information. It provides a consistent, familiar format for recording the place, date, and time a bird was spotted, along with additional space for notes and comments, sketches, and other important details. And with each new entry, it becomes ever more valuable and personalboth as a chronicle of birding accomplishments and as a memento of the observations and occasions that make birding so deeply satisfying.
A first-rate journal is an essential addition to any birder's bookshelf, and this is the best available anywhere. It's also a perfect gift, especially when paired with the latest edition of the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America.
Customer Reviews:
Good Bird Note Book.......2002-04-15
As a black and white companion to the National Geographic bird book it is great. This note book gives you room to write and draw on the species of birds. One can use this book as a "life list" and record your sightings, locations, etc., into this. It is amazing to sit down with this book years later and review your past findings. This book goes along exactly with the bird book and I usually keep both with me at all times for recording and identifying.........
An excellent gift for any North American birdwatcher.......2002-01-09
Now available in an updated and expanded second edition, Mel Baughman's The Birder's Journal is a consumable volume for the personal use and notations of North American birdwatchers. Though it has very basic information on over 60 North American bird families, the bulk of this thick compendium consists of accurate, detailed black-and-white sketches of over 850 bird species, next to allotted writing space where the birdwatcher can make his or her own notes about when, how, and where that species of bird was successfully observed. The Birder's Journal is a perfect aid to keep track of the all the different feathered friends one has seen, and an excellent gift selection for any North American birdwatcher.
NGS Field Guide - A Disappointment.......2001-12-08
This journal is a gray-scale (black and white) version of the popular and very useful NGS field guide. Nothing new is added except blank lines for brief field notes - which replace the descriptive text adjacent to the colored illustration as found in the field guide. Most - but not all - of the birds currently listed by the AOU are represented.
However, as a "fully illustrated" journal in which to record one's first sightings, it functions only marginally better than the check-boxes in a field guide index - again, by providing something more than a margin in which to record notes.
...
Also compare the Audubon Society's entry into the field. This pretty journal, in the style of a diary, would serve quite appropriately as a gift for a young woman or teenage girl just beginning the birding experience. Very few of the 1000+ birds in the AOU Checklist for our region are represented, however.
Each of these journals serves the purpose of providing space for keeping track of the birds one has identified in the field, but each will appeal to a select audience. The NGS Birder's Journal doesn't go beyond the basic requirement of providing space.
Life-List Illustrated and the Audubon Journal bring a desirable esthetic element to the process.
The Perfect Life List for a Birder.......2000-04-29
I have used this book for years. It has become my life list. As I see the birds, I color in the line drawings and fill in the details of the sighting. I highly recommend this journal
Interested but not professional.......2000-02-22
I slowly became interested in birds through some of my travels and wanted to keep some kind of record of what I was seeing. I'm not a member of a formal birding organization which has more defined and focused goals for recording bird sightings. I found this book to be more than I really wanted. I have the NG Field Guide to North American Birds (which I love and have given as gifts to friends), and the Birder's Journal is a black-and-white copy with lines where the description would be in the Field Guide. For simple noting of sightings, the Field Guide itself is sufficient. There is space in the margin beside the bird's description and a checkbox by the name in the index which lets you keep a list as well. However, if you need space to keep copious notes, this book gives that space. I would have liked something more easily transportable with a spiral binding for ease of writing.
