It's an unfortunate reality that architects practicing in the great expanse between the East and West coasts all too often find themselves beyond the radar of the profession's so-called "tastemakers." And it's especially a shame in the case of Julie Snow, a Minneapolis-based architect who has, over the past decade, developed one of the most inventive practices anywhere in the United States.
Snow's meticulously constructed work has the structural opacity and formal integrity that characterized Mies van der Rohe's architecture, but with a sense of humanity and a sensitivity to the environment that seems borrowed from her Midwestern progenitor, Frank Lloyd Wright.
This, the first monograph on Snow's work, provides in depth documentation of 14 of her residential, institutional, corporate, and public projects, including the Koehler Residence in New Brunswick, Canada, a series of Minneapolis Light Rail Stations, the Minnesota Children's Museum, and the University of South Dakota School of Business.

Everyone ought to have 10 copies of this book!.......2001-01-04
OK, so I'm biased. I'm the author.
But the book is out of print and I thought, what the heck, I should say a few words. Very few. It didnt' sell well and I figure I made about $.037/hr for the work I did. But that's my problem, not yours.
I recently re-read the book. The technology section is dated, but if you find a used copy and are interested in video, it is still a useful introduction to the subject. Very readable, not too technical.
If nothing else, buy a copy for your local library. I won't make a dime, but the book contains many references to timeless books on the subject that will help any beginner.

I wish I'd had a book like this when my boys were growing up! Common good sense backed up by sound medical advice and creative ideas make for a winning combination. I give this new book as well as THE PINK AND BLUE BABY PAGES to all my young friends who are parents for the first time as well as older friends who are grandparents. Everyone loves both the books. Wonderful book on many levels.......2005-08-26
This is a beautiful book which can enjoyed on many levels. It reads like both a how to book as well as a tale of a gardener transforming spaces into gardens that attract birds and butterflies. The photographs are so wonderful you could spend hours without touching that spade.
I was so inspired, and you probably will be as well, I was correcting how I had pruned large plantings and trees to invite more creatures. In the first season we were rewarded with two bird nests. The book is also a good reference with guidance and information about what plantings to consider in your region and with your soil. There are also many suggestions for container gardens. Our trips to the garden store were better informed and more rewarding.
In the final chapters is a bird, butterfly, moth and dragonfly guide to help identify your new visitors. If only they would stay put long enough to get the book out.
