Customer Reviews:
I was disappointed........2007-03-30
L A Lost & Found was a very good resource for the "history" of how the City of Angels developed into what it is now. However, if you are looking for a book which shows the awesome beauty of LA's prominent architectural sites - which can take your breath away - this is not the book you want to buy. I found the book akward. The format seems clumsy and lacking. There is no index. The content didn't seem to follow any patterns that were discernable to me. Despite the photos by the revered and excellent Julius Shulman - I just thought this book came up short. It seems to me to be an average sort of book. You might very well have a different take on this book. But I would not recommend it unless you have a full library on LA architecture before buying this one.
LA Lost & Found: An Architectural History of Los Angeles.......2002-03-19
Not being a native to a City of Angels, it was and is hard at times to know what those around me are talking about. At times, I feel uncomfortable asking those native Angelians to explain to me what or where they are talking about. There are certain places in Los Angeles, where most Angelians grew up attending or just know the locations of. Places such as: the historical Olvera Street, infamous City Hall, breathtaking Bonaventure Hotel, or magical Watts Towers. Growing up in suburbia San Diego and not knowing much about the grand city life, let alone the history of Los Angeles, it was interesting to read and learn all about LA. From the beginning when the Spanish settlers arrived at the quaint Indian village of Yangna to the hopping and star crazed city it has become today. Kaplan visits every historical landmark in LA and gives you a brief yet detailed description of why Angelians love this city. A city with endless treasures and unforgettable events, Kaplan allowed me to see LA as a whole; through the eyes of an Angelian, as I would have never seen it. It will be a year this month that I have been living in Los Angeles and I thought I knew LA but after reading this book, I realized that I have so much more to see, so many more places to explore, and so many more things to learn about in the City of Angels.
The past and present of Los Angeles.......2002-03-19
Sam Hall Kaplan's L.A. Lost and Found: An Architectural History of Los Angeles is a book obviously written about Los Angeles. The book basically brings us through Los Angeles in the past and on to the future. I feel the reason why the book is titled L.A. Lost and Found is because we have lost a lot of L.A. throughout the years but we have also gain a lot. Things that we have lost and gain is basically the landmarks of Los Angeles. As the years gone by we have been much more productive with landmarks and we are forgetting about the older ones. If you are one that wants to know more about the history of Los Angeles this would be a nice book to look through because it has a lot of beautiful colored pictures of the landmarks of Los Angeles.
An Interesting Coffee Table Read.......2002-03-18
I had to read Kaplan's LA Lost & Found for my english 102 class at Cal State Univ. of L.A. At first it seems like yet another boring architectual photograph book, but after you browse through a few of its pages you get a different feeling from the book. The feeling that you've actually been given the chance to see the City of Los Angeles the way it was before all the hoopla and constant rebuilding. Kaplan covers the aesthetic change of Los Angeles over a span of many decades. By using high quality photographs he presents us with the past of Los Angeles, such as the trolley cars, old hollywood, and inventive new style of architectual design. Even though we only read three chapters of the book for my class, this book is still and interesting piece of work to have in your home or office so people get flip through it and view the many brilliant photographs.
Lost History.......2002-03-13
Kaplan's lost and found is a great representation of the history of Los Angeles. It shows both pictorally and textally how Los Angeles developed using the medium of architecture. This lends itself really well towards a general history and putting together a timeline of events. The book is separated into chapters of general era in our history. I found that the picture helped me get a mental image of what the city looked like in the different time periods. Overall, the book was a great read and I would recommend it to anyone who is researching, or just wanting to see our history in a pictured fashion.

Customer Reviews:
Great book for art lovers!.......2000-08-30
I'm 13 and I love drawing. I have been a Bambi/Disney fan for quite a while, so I bought this book. In a few days, I could draw a excellent Bambi. Step-by-step pictures make it easy to learn to draw Bambi by using circles, ovals and other basic shapes. It covers the main characters like Bambi, Thumper, Friend Owl, Flower, and also includes secondary characters such as The Great Prince, Faline, and many of the little forest animals. In the front it has a few pages that tell about the movie. I would recommend this book anytime!
Great book for fledgling artists........2000-06-20
Like the other "How to Draw" Disney books, this one gives you a great overview of the key characters in classic poses. The basic drawing tips are also useful for new artists.

Book Description
Designed as a supplementary text for beginning art courses, this brief, inexpensive text introduces issues that are typically overlooked in standard art survey texts, such as the role of the museum in creating the canon, ways to understand art of other cultures and outsider art, and the difficulty many beginners have in understanding art, especially contemporary art.
Customer Reviews:
Good supplemental text for art history courses.......2001-06-23
This short and very readable book helps the intelligent but uninitiated reader come to terms with works of art that can be confusing, or even intimidating. Art can be daunting if it comes from a culture different from our own, is the work of "outsider" artists, or -- as with most contemporary art -- is deliberately obscure, or "difficult," in some way. The authors don't attempt to supply pat answers to the questions "is this art?" and "what does this mean?" but they help the readers to frame additional questions that can lead them to their own better understandings of these objects.
I definitely will assign this book in my course on writing and critical thinking for art history majors. This summer term, I also plan to experiment with using it as a recommended, supplemental text in my art history survey.

The history of Germany in drawings.......2004-09-02
I examined these drawings using my perspective of having studied the history of Germany in the years of 1896 to 1926. With that background, you can see the power and insecurity of Germany at the turn of the century and up to the start of the Great War. The most powerful cartoons deal with the aftermath of the German defeat in that war, illustrating the poverty and decadence that overtook the country. In many of those cartoons, the women are scantily clad and in others, some of the people are in rags.
The original captions are present, with English translations underneath them; the date the cartoon appeared and any other necessary explanation are also included. A few deal with major historical events, so without the explanation, it would be difficult to understand the topic. The most ominous cartoon appeared on Jan. 3, 1923. It has three heavy old men conversing in an alley and the caption is:
National Politics. "I say that as long as the Jews are occupying the Rhine, we'll have no peace and quiet." "Oh, get off it, it's the French that are there." "Yeah? Just go to one of Hitler's meetings - he'll tell you who they are."
There is great power and occasional anguish in these cartoons, as a powerful nation was reduced to destitution and despair. While you can enjoy them without knowledge of the historical context, to truly appreciate them, an understanding of history is necessary.

"I look forward to consulting this book for the rest of my career!"
David J. Weber, Robert and Nancy Dedman Professor of History, Southern Methodist University
"In
Texian Iliad you smell the smoke of battle."
Paula Mitchell Marks,
Texas Monthly
"Hardin has succeeded admirably in writing a balanced military history of the revolution, making an important contribution to the extensive body of work on the struggle that eventually led to Texas' becoming part of the United States."
Mike Cox,
Austin American-Statesman
Hardly were the last shots fired at the Alamo before the Texas Revolution entered the realm of myth and controversy. French visitor Frederic Gaillardet called it a "Texian Iliad" in 1839, while American Theodore Sedgwick pronounced the war and its resulting legends "almost burlesque."
In this highly readable history, Stephen L. Hardin discovers more than a little truth in both of those views. Drawing on many original Texan and Mexican sources and on-site inspections of almost every battlefield, he offers the first complete military history of the Revolution. From the war's opening in the "Come and Take It" incident at Gonzales to the capture of General Santa Anna at San Jacinto, Hardin clearly describes the strategy and tactics of each side. His research yields new knowledge of the actions of famous Texan and Mexican leaders, as well as fascinating descriptions of battle and camp life from the ordinary soldier's point of view.
This award-winning book belongs on the bookshelf of everyone interested in Texas or military history.
Customer Reviews:
The Best There is on the Texas Revolution.......2006-03-11
Reading this book, seeing his numerous appearances in historical documentaries and hearing him lecture, has set Stephen Hardin apart as the consummate authority on Texas history. In his book, TEXIAN ILIAD: A MILITARY HISTORY OF THE TEXAS REVOLUTION, Hardin goes far beyond the usual narratives on Texas history, which often tend to narrow their scope to selected events such as the Alamo, San Jacinto, or possibly Goliad. Here, you will find a detailed account of the events, which led up to the revolution as Hardin begins his narrative with the 1824 overthrow of the constitutional government by Santa Anna and ends with his capture at San Jacinto.
Of particular note is how dysfunctional the Texian militia was. Hardin concisely depicts the seemingly endless power struggle and how many of the volunteers followed their own leader and ignored "high command", such as it was. Most people are fairly familiar of the power struggle between Travis and Bowie, but those two merely scratched the surface of squabbles among the Texian forces. Hardin also does a much better job than most historians at portraying the valuable contributions of the tejanos, led by Juan Seguin.
The book is also laden with wonderful illustrations, maps, photographs and portraits. It concludes with forty pages of author's notes and perhaps the most comprehensive bibliography available on Texas' struggle for independence. If your goal is the best accounting of the Alamo, there may well be superior sources, but for an overall narrative of the entire history of the Texas Revolution, this book is at the top of the list.

Read Jeff Long's "Duel of Eagles" instead.......2004-04-20
I would recommend Jeff Long's fiery "Duel of Eagles" instead of this book. Long doesn't pull any punches, and retells the story of the Alamo in a brutally honest way. The book by Hardin is heavy on description of the conflict in military terms. I suppose if that is all that insterests you, then it would be a fine reading. But, it you want a more thorough and accurate account of the events that lead to the Battle of the Alamo, and the consequences of it's Aftermath, chose Long's book over this one.
most excellent but slightly bias..........2004-04-05
I discovered this book to be most excellent in terms of recounting the Texas Revolution. The book proves to be superbly written, researched and you can read it in clarity despite of the details of information, data and personalities involves. Hardin's narrative of the Alamo proves to be quite excellent (see the Osprey's book Campaign 89 for Hardin's indepth look) and the way he goes about retelling the horror stories of Texians' blunders make it hard for the reader like me to realized how victory over the Mexicans could have been achieved. But Texians did win but according to Hardin, no thanks to Sam Houston. I guess this was where I wondered if Hardin's crusade went bit overboard. The author totally despised Sam Houston and its shows in his book. From the pages, it looked like the Texians won despite of the best efforts of Sam Houston. Didn't Houston do anything right in 1836??
Still, this is a great book, a standard on the subject for some times to come.
A great book that almost answers the Alamo mystery.......2003-12-13
I will agree with the acclamation this book has received both for its appeal to its academic audience and historical readers-- as aptly put by one reviewer--""the author's deft descriptions
..." and "Gary S. Zaboly's well researched illustrations..." make this a great work on the Texas Revolution. The only drawback
That I could find is that-- notwithstanding Hardin's monumental research--the author appears to have accepted de la Pena's version of Crockett's demise, although he does reference in a footnote to Kilgore's "How did Davey Die?" Just a historical fragment, but one that deserves much more than adddressed in
such a fine work. Also, would have liked to see somewhat more emphasis upon the "other sides view" of events surrounding the Alamo battle. A solid 4+ stars.
Excellent introduction and review.......2003-06-24
I agree with the other reviews praising this book. I might quibble, however, about using the word "details," which would suggest to some readers matters of little importance. But certain details made all the difference in the outcome, and Hardin understands this. The illustrations were praised, but this needs to be explained: they are much enhanced by the commentary on them. My one criticism of this book is one that I make of many otherwise worthy history books: inadequate maps.

Book Description
This unique reference is a comprehensive encyclopedia dedicated to the institutions, religion, politics, and culture in Muslim societies throughout the world. Placing particular emphasis on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Modern Islamic World contains over 750 articles in four volumes on Muslims in the Arab heartland as well as South and Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Americas. An invaluable resource, the Encyclopedia offers extensive comparative and systematic analyses of Islamic beliefs, institutions, movements, practices, and peoples on an international scale. The alphabetically arranged articles range from brief 500-word essays to major interpretive and synthetic treatment of topics such as the Islamic state, pilgrimage, law, marriage, and foreign relations. Related entries cover areas of general interest such as social and political movements, women, Muslim minorities, human rights, Islam in the West, and interreligious affairs. And prominent figures that had a lasting impact on Islam are explored including Muhammad, Aga Khan, Malcolm X, Muhammad Iqbal, 'Ali Shari 'ati, Ayatollah Khomeini, and Hasan al-Turabi. Truly multidisciplinary, this work reflects the breadth and depth of contemporary scholarship in Islamic studies. Combining the tools of the humanities and social sciences to examine the interrelationship of religion, politics, and culture in Muslim societies, it explains the changing realities of Muslim life. Its unique focus makes The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Modern Islamic World an invaluable reference for scholars and students of many disciplines, government and media analysts, and anyone interested in increasing their understanding of Islamic politics and culture.

Invaluable.......2002-01-06
This is a fantastic set of books, both for the layperson and the scholar. It's written by a wide assortment of experts in the field, people who are extremely qualified and unbiased. A wide range of topics is covered. This IS the modern Islamic world, though, so there's very little historical information. But I use it constantly, both to satisfy my own curiosity and for a book I'm writing. Thank you to the editors and contributors of this great work.
Bravo, Mabruk ! Dr. Esposito.......2001-11-09
I just received my set of 4 volumes and already consulted it for an article I'm preparing. I was surprised at the breadth of the articles and the references provided. The information available in each article extends beyond the basic and lends itself easily to in-depth investigation. A truly excellent work and well worth the expense. For the Middle East Studies professional, analyst, academic, consultant this encyclopedia will be very useful.
Excellent encyclopedia about MODERN islamic topics.......2001-06-06
I had heard much praise about this encyclopedia. Still, I was hesitant to spend the money..... so I visited a library that had them on their shelves. I read and read, for hours - with pleasure! I then went home and placed my order.
Each word/catagory/topic is well explained in plain and easily understandable english. The contributing writers are well established in their respective fields. (John Esposito is the editor and not the sole writer of this encyclopedia.)
I can sincerely recommend this encyclopedia, for scholars, teachers, students all (muslims and non-muslims) interested in knowing more about islam and the muslim word.

The book and CD provide an introduction to the sound repertoire of species living in eastern and central North America. A variety of calls from each species are included, along with an in-depth description and explanation of their significance. In addition to color photographs of the most common species, the text offers a fascinating look at the science of avian calls, making this an indispensable aid for the outdoor enthusiast.
Customer Reviews:
Great for beginners in bird songs/calls.......2007-08-08
As a novice to identifying birds by their songs and calls, I found this CD be exactly what I needed. When buying the item I was really mostly interested in the audio disk. This contains the songs as well as various calls for the common birds in the Eastern Region, and already I'm finding that I'm using the calls I've learned more than the songs to identify birds in my neighbourhood (at least at this time of year). While I initially was concerned that the number of birds the CD covers might be limited, I'm finding that learning even this number of birds is quite challenging for a novice, and a greater number of birds would probably have just confused me at this point. So while not comprehensive in terms of species, it is more detailed for each species, and I can identify most of the birds I encounter quite well. The book contains a photo of each bird and a description of the sounds it makes and when they are made, which is proving surprisingly useful since associating a "pronounciation" of the sounds seems so far an effective aid for learning the calls. Once I master volume 1 and 2, I will probably purchase a more comprehensive collection of songs, but for now I"m more than happy with this.
Fabulous for learning all the sounds of your common birds.......2005-02-14
Lang Elliott, one of the best bird recordists around, has compiled a wonderful collection of virtually all the vocalizations made by 35 species found in eastern North America. This compilation may have a limited number of species covered, but it more than makes up for this in providing so many different calls and songs for each species, and also providing the context in which each vocalization is made. For example, for the American Robin you hear the basic song, the dawn song, the low-grade alarm call, the alarm call given when a raptor flies overhead, and more! Excellent both for learning common bird sounds and for figuring out what the meaning of a particular vocalization is.
