This magnificently conceived and executed catalogue publishes for the first time one of the most amazing collections of sculpture in the United States, the Cantor Gifts to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

The highlight of this handsome folio-size volume is 41 works by acclaimed Impressionistic sculptor Auguste Rodin. Here we find his compelling "Saint John the Baptist Preaching," each sinew of this over life-size figure reflecting on the "voice crying in the wilderness;" his dynamic flying figures with limbs extended into space; and his pensive bust of Victor Hugo.

In addition to Rodin, works by his contemporaries and forerunners are presented - Jean-Baptise Carpeaux, Albert-Ernest Carrier-Beleuse, Aime-Jules Dalou, and others.

Nicely captures modern Cairo.......2004-01-20

Photography books of contemporary Egypt (as opposed to Pharaonic Egypt) are few and far between, and if nothing else this slim volume is an inexpensive and welcome addition. This is not a book for the tourist or Egyptology fan, but rather a book that will best be appreciated by Cairenes, both Egyptian and foreign, and those more familiar with daily life in modern Egypt. The black-and-white photos fail to capture the dazzling colors of Cairo that assault the eye, but this is not a drawback -- they impart the graininess and grittiness of modern, chaotic, polluted Cairo, and capture Cairo's simultaneous awfulness and beauty. The overall effect is as beautiful as it is depressing. Sonallah Ibrahim's introductory essay captures these same emotions well. This book would make a nice companion to Max Rodenbeck's "Cairo: The City Victorious."

IN an age when cartoonists seem to always chasing pulbic opinion, Wuerker sticks to his leftist guns, with elaborately-drawn attacks on a wide range of characters who richly deserve ot be skewered. A nice way to annoy your right-wing friends. A great xmas gift.

Good Title... This book is BASIC.......2005-01-07

This is a college level textbook for complete beginners in the field of Real Estate and specifically Real Estate Appraisal. As such, it gives a nice overview of the profession and of appraisal techniques and not a whole lot more. To get more in depth to the level of feeling professionally competent, you will need to add on with other books and classes. But this is a very good start.

I don't know why colleges use this book as a required textbook. This book is DEFINITELY not a good book for someone who is new to real estate apraisal. The book did't explain things very clear especially some very important things like "Highest and Best Use". There are some other book that explain the real estte concepts better than this one. You definitely will not pass the real estate appraisal exam if you only read this book

RE Appraisal.......2001-11-14

This is a great book that is used in some of the colleges for textbook. It explains the fundamentals of real estate appraisal by using pratical examples which we may experience everyday. In addition, it clearly shows the calculations, number by number with detailed explainations to make the readers easy to understand the concepts. It really helped me a lot in the real estate business.

Will Yegge has the unique ability of being able to present a difficult subject in a logical, intelligent, concise and interesting manner.

Even though I have no background whatsoever in accounting, I was able to follow the information in this book and use it as my primary guide in valuing a company that I was interested in purchasing. It is a great resource for novices.

Although his work on valuation techniques is straightforward in later chapters, the 1st several chapters do not do an adequate job of explaining the psychology of business valuation, buying or selling or the 'intangible' of business value. Words such as 'steeds' and 'pestilence' belong in literature, not reference manuals. Are Cliff Notes available to decipher just what these chapters are trying to communicate? I am trying to buy a business;lots of hard work lay ahead. Why must this book start off so unclear?

Professional approach with simple expaniations, easy to use.......1999-07-25

In preparation to sell my business for appx $10MM I sought many references on how to make a professional presentation and and use methodology that would be reasonable and logical to lead to a sale. Wilbur has doen a great job with this and his other book, How To Sell A business. I recommend that anyone read there two before putting a package together. I have had many favorable comments from both principals and brokers concerning the structure of the presentation I was able do make using Wilbur's help.

Excellent on both the "art" and "science" of valuation........1998-12-10

Just what I needed as a small business owner who needed a basic understanding of both the art and the science of valuing my company. Heavier read than it looks, since I didn't needed to know everything about non-related businesses. I did need to know how what factors must be considered and how complex some deals could be. Yegge speaks from experience and that is obvious, helpful and most comforting.

I found this book very fine and very moving. While in infertility treatment, I chose my reading material carefully. I wanted nothing that would discourage me or make me depressed. The Pregnancy Project helped me get through treatment with its positive spin. I compare it to The Empty Lap and A Little Pregnant. Thank you, Karen.

A wonderful new conception myth.......2000-01-05

Karen Propp, a poet, teacher, and, with the help of infertility treatment, the mother of a young son, set out to write *The Pregnancy Project: Encounteers With Reproductive Technology*, in part to create "a new conception myth," but she's done much more: written a memoir that manages to be simultaneously intimate and discreet, a generous description of her own difficult, and ultimately successful quest to have a child via the miracles and dehumanizing horrors of infertility treatment. Did Cumings write volume one?.......2005-10-16

In volume one we have nothing but crap from Cumings, and the book reads like socio-cultural and statistical study of Korea after the Japanese surrender, a lot of boring, dry facts.
But in volume 2 Cumings did a much better job on the politics of the war, though I find his distinction between rollback and containment a bit too forced.

You can forget about volume one, just buy volume 2 to get to one version of the causes, and consequences of the Korean War from a revisionist perspective, with which Cumings points out that the ROK was a puppet regime run by Japanese colonization era collaborationists and war time traitors (ethnic Korean police and Imperial Japanese Army memebrs), who were contantly raiding North Korea to provoke a war of unification, while the DPRK was run by communist partisans who were the only ones fighting the Japs (as well as the Chinese Nationalists in China), whose desire to unify Korea under her own brand of Stalinist communism, led her to respond to the constant provocations, raids and incursios by the ROKA across the 38th Parallel with a massve counterattack once her volunteers returned from China, and that the unexpected collapse of the ROKA in turn led to a full scale invasion on her own initiative. There are food for thought in Volume 2 about the duplicity, complicity and treachery of the ROK, the Chinese natioalist, McArthur and the US Army and CIT in enlisting the defeated Japs to re-invade China and Korea, all in the name of democracy!

SUPERB - *THE* GUIDE TO THE ORIGINS OF THIS WAR.......2004-11-19

It is with appreciation and gratitude that I approach scholars like Bruce Cumings. Courageous, meticulous, and honest, Cumings examines in painstaking detail the societal structure of the Korean state from the end of the Yi Choson dynasty to the role Korea played as a component of the Japanese empire to the various political movements that came to the surface upon Japan's defeat.

Cumings illustrates the existence of true patriots - nationalists who had never collaborated with the occupying Japanese colonizers - who organized a People's Republic which, despite its leftist leanings, did not have in its agenda the establishment of a totalitarian dictatorship. These individuals wanted to establish an independent Korea for Koreans and sadly they were obstructed by corrupt, moneyed rightists whose ancestors came from the entrenched landlord/yangban class which had always occupied the highest strata of traditional Korean society - but who had also maintained their privileges by collaborating with the hated Japanese invaders.

And unbeknownst to so many in America, Cumings explains the history of the Soviet-American division of the peninsula - trusteeship, the attitudes by Soviet and American military authorities towards the established People's Republic, the Moscow accords.

It is not without truth that to this day, North Korea calls the Seoul regime "US imperialists' puppets." Kim Il Sung rose to power thanks to Soviet backing and by eliminating rivals, many of who had also spent their lives fighting Japan, and the cult of personality that North Korea is today is not what the leaders of the Korean People's Republic wanted for their people.

This book is a MUST for anyone who wants more than a cursory and cosmetic grasp of the events that unfolded in Korea in 1950. I will soon order volume 2!

The Bible for Students of Modern Korean History.......2003-10-04

I was an East Asian Studies (focus on Korea) at Harvard. Both Volumes on the Origins of the Korean War by Bruce Cumings are absolute prerequisites to understand and study this unfortunate part of Korean history. I note how some reviewers trashed the book because they think it is "revisionist leftist nonsense" - I believe it is a matter of the reader not liking what actually happened. Prof. Cumings scholarship is impeccable. His tendency to let his passion and compassion for the Korean people show in his writing has earned him the distrust of some. However, scholars in Korean studies - of whatever political persuasion - hail these volumes as masterpieces of scholarship and writing. Both volumes (outrageously priced as they are) are absolute must haves for any library that has a section on Korean history.

Outstanding book........2002-10-19

It is my pleasure to emphatically claim
that Mr Cummings have done an outstanding
research job regarding what really
happened before the Korean War. This
monumental work sheds light into a covered
part of history that many people are
unaware of. Having read this book,
I'm really doubtfull about all the conservative
claims that N. Korea was the sole
culprit of the War.

Truly, the greatest education about Korea you can get........2002-01-23

This is simply the quintessential text on Korea in the 20th century. Both Volume I and Volume II are necessary additions to ANY university library. It is THE book to read for any and all people whose personal or professional lives deal with Korea or Koreans. Reading both volumes is a task, but there is something for everyone in this work, even if you just skip around. It is supported by heavy use of primary documentation and the sources are well cited. There are simply no sources on Korean history, society and politcs that do better (and more) than this work. Highly recommended!

This 2nd volume to Lang Elliott's excellent series follows the same format as the 1st. 35 common birds from Killdeer to Canadian Geese to various Owls and Woodpeckers are included. They are grouped into 5 categores: Open Country & Brushy Areas; Marsh, Lake, Stream & Swapm; Forest & Pinewoods; Northwoods & High Mountains and Saltmarsh & Seashore(though fortunately this does not change the track listing and seems to serve more as a thematic than a practical difference from the first volume).

The selection is not as inspired as the 1st and the series has been usurped by the easier to find (still in print as of this review) "Common Birds and their Songs" book and audio and the "Stokes Field Guide to Bird Songs". Still, if you come across Vol. 2, I would recommend it.

This 2 volume set is great. It gives lots of bird sounds, including different kinds of calls for each bird. It seems accurate and is helpful for the serious or amateur bird watcher. Not that it matters a whole lot, but it comes in a nice looking, sturdy case too.
