The title of this handsome, oversize book may be a bit of a curveball: it is a book of photography, not a treatise on modern architecture. Ezra Stoller, like all the other great architectural photographers, is a meticulous, patient craftsman as well as an artist, so much so that readers tend to forget that his occupation is essentially a commercial venture. Most of the time, members of his profession take pictures because they are hired to, and only rarely do they shoot subjects on their own initiative. In the course of his 50-year career, Stoller documented the products of some of American architecture's best and most famous figures, including Frank Lloyd Wright, Eero Saarinen, Kevin Roche, I.M. Pei, Philip Johnson, Paul Rudolph, Richard Meier, and particularly the firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. His sensibility was perfectly attuned to the ethos of the best modernist design of the day--valuing rationality, clarity, controlled surfaces, and occasionally some drama.
Nowadays, architecture is almost always shot in color, but the most artful examples of this genre are in black and white. Most of the 400 images in this book are satisfyingly monochromatic, and many are exquisite demonstrations that art and commerce are not mutually exclusive. Harvard professor William Saunders supplies a learned introduction, and Stoller provides useful and revealing notes to individual architects and photos. --John Pastier

The man who captured Modernism........2002-10-14
The title of this marvellous book is a little misleading, it should be 'The Modern Architectural Photographs of Ezra Stoller'. The actual title 'Modern Architecture' implies that it might be a history of the subject. There are 164 large, beautifully printed, photos of what he considers his best work and 223 smaller photos, many of which have his (fascinating) comments about the architects and the buildings. The majority of the photos are in black and white (thirty-four in color) and somehow this seems as it should be, mid-century Modernist architecture has a visual simplicity that works best in tones of grey and black, I feel.
William Saunders essay explains how Stoller originally trained as an architect and this is probably the reason why he can take such stunning photos of buildings. One reason I like his work is because the main object of the photo always seems naturally framed within the photo area, another is that many of the photos have strong shapes which create an abstract feel to them, helped, of course, by being in black and white. Even when curves are involved Stoller still delivers, two knockout photos of Saarinen's TWA terminal (pages 120-121) remind me of the chromed tube sculpture of Jose DeRivera.
A couple of book design flaws I found slightly annoying, firstly, some of the page numbers are missing on the three commentary sections where Stoller comments on the architects and buildings and secondly, none of the captions indicate when the photos were taken. Although not a design flaw I would have expected to see at least one photo of Mr Stoller in this book, the blank space opposite the title page would have been the obvious place.
Stoller seemed to have concentrated on photographing modern buildings in the east of the US, the west was covered by Julius Shulman and you can see some lovely examples of his work, especially private houses, in 'Julius Shulman. Architecture and its Photography', edited by Peter Gossel.

Magnifique~.......2001-07-06
This handsome coffee table book describes modern architecture not by words but by photographs taken thru the lens of Ezra Stoller, who is fortunate enough to work with many superarchitects of the 20th century. Most of the buildings covered were taken in United States & many of them were in black & white format. The book started with an essay written by William Saunders, explaining to readers why Ezra's work is a cut above the rest of other photographers'. William commented that Ezra opted to have the buildings did the talking rather than glorifying the buildings by using camera tricks, or conveying them in arty forms. The main reason why Ezra was captivated by modern architecture is due to its celebration of form, space, depth, simplicity, & timeless appeal. Ezra also made sure that photographs taken were in context with its surroundings. At times, his works were depicted in poignant manner, at times, poetic, & occasionally witty. What readers might not realise was the extent of preparations Ezra & his assistant went into ensuring the photographs taken of the subjects were what he intended in his imagination. Notes provided by Ezra himself describing his favourite photographs were interesting to read, gave us a glimpse of the architects' thought upon their own works. The book was ended with notes, bibliography, & index. A brilliant book to have, & a book that you would refer to again & again. Highly recommended.
Monuments not fossils.......2000-12-13
This is really an art book. The photographs are art. The buildings are art. They are simple, elegant, graceful, efficient, and drop-dead beautiful (I'm referring here to both the pictures and the architecture). They are monuments to the clear concentrated thought of man.
Fabulous.......2000-06-07
Captures the clarity, the strength, the excitement and the in-your-face rebellion of classic modernism. Anyone who loves mid-century modern design, which is enjoying a huge revival, will love this book. Breathtaking. After some of the miserable architectural design work of the past couple of decades, this look at the past is a breath of FRESH air. It's very current. Very hip.
Beautiful fossil.......2000-04-23
Apparently photographer Stoller was commissioned by architects and developers to portray their interests in commercially flattering ways. So this "Modern Architecture" doesn't even pretend to weigh the successes and failures of modernism. It's a beautiful fossil, a nostalgic catalogue of the vanished certainties of the Mies-ozoic era.

Book Description
A contemporary perspective on the problem of design and the visual arts, this book investigates the visual experience through four key disciplines: art, craft/technology, design, and science. It discusses visual fundamentals such as line, form, color, and composition, as well as social issues such as environmental responsibility, non-Western art history, gender, locality, and cultural diversity-all of which have an impact on current creative processes. This broad viewpoint shows how artists can create meaningful work that has cultural integrity.

Spectacular resource for the dedicated scholar.......2007-05-13
If you are passionate about Munch's art, you'll enjoy this immensely. If you deal professionally in fine prints, this will be a substantial addition to your working library. For all others, it's too much and not enough.
This remarkable book is a complete catalog of prints from a very prolific printmaker - over 700 of them, from a career spanning 50 years. Each one is reproduced, B&W or color, in readily recognizable form. When significantly different states or inkings are known, each variation is shown. Thorough notes accompany each, not just medium, size, and date, but information about where it was printed and displayed, and sometimes even about the plate, block, or stone from which it was printed. Indexing, notes, and supporting material are meticulous. This volume certainly meets its goal: to represent Munch's total output of prints, to the extent that very fine scholarship possibly can.
This is just a catalog, though. The author has intentionally witheld commentary, referring readers to the large literature that already analyzes Munch's work. Reproductions are always printed well, and large enough to be easily recognized. Very few are full sized or even page sized - despite its large format, this isn't a coffee table book of the usual kind. Anyone but a serious fan will find it repetitive and disappointing as a "picture book."

Outstanding, but expensive........2002-01-26
This is sure to become the definitive collection of Munch's graphic work. The plates are beautifully and accurately done (I've seen many of the original prints), and, as the title says, the collection is comprehensive - something which the non-enthusiast probably won't require (multiple prints from the same etching are included, along with all of Munch's later work, post nervous breakdown, that I personally find less appealing). Nevertheless, if you're serious about studying Munch, and money is not a concern, this is a tremendous resource.

Far more than just "The Scream".......2007-05-18
Munch is best known for his iconic work "The Scream," a work that has been reproduced & parodied countless times since its creation, but which still resonates with emotional power even after such popular saturation. Well, there's a lot more to this artist than just one famous work! This collection of his prints is an excellent introduction to a world of raw feeling laid bare, often swathed in blackness & palpable dread. Munch clearly felt & anticipated the alienation & fear of the 20th (and now 21st) century, depicting it with naked intensity. He delves deeply into the darkest places of the human psyche, making it tangible for all to see, whether they want to or not. This isn't always comforting art, but it's revelatory. A recommended volume!

Colorful Writing for a Monochrome Book.......2000-04-02
Often times, in the art world, pedantry and an overwrought sense of aesthetics make anything written on the subject unbearable for all but the snobbiest. Fortunately for the rest of rest, Mr. Hodin wrote this book. He is an engaging, lucid writer who has studied his subject thoroughly and actually knew Edvard Munch in his later years which enables him to offer a good deal of important personal information that other authors are simply not able to do. This additional insight is important, for Edvard Munch is one of the truly original geniuses of art and his work carries an urgent message for the dissociated psyche of modern man. My only complaint with this volume is that the publisher elected to print only about one third of the prints in color which, while unfortunate, is by no means devastating. If youre interested in this greatest of expressionists and interested in delving into the spiritual crisis of modern man, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. On the other hand, if youre an elitist art critic looking for stodgy literature, look elsewhere this is not your book.

An excellent and scholarly work covering all of Munch's work. Over 160 plates are discussed in depth and there are cross references to the wherabouts of each of the plates at the end of the book. The major fault is the lack of colour plates (30), and the relativly poor quality of the reproductions but all in all a valuable and comprehensive work.

Valuable Insights into ES and Egov Initiatives in Asia .......2004-08-18
I was pleasantly surprised when I first came across this book on the bookshelf. With the impact of ICT on globalization, and especially with the booming ASIA, this book has not come at a better time.
Having read most of the materials, I would say it is very relevant for IT practitioners and students. Not only it has documented a variety of experiences on ES and Egov initiatives, it also provides many useful practical and valuable ideas that practitioners can apply in various organizational contexts.
Overall, an interesting and practical book.

With the bloom off many other investment roses, real estate remains a reliable way to build financial security and is a natural extension of the American Dream of home ownership.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic - very good overview!.......2005-11-29
This book delivers a very level view of real estate. It gives you lots of positive aspects of real estate investing to keep you enthusiastic. Responsibly, it also gives you several of the pitfalls to be avoided when starting out in real estate.
I definitely recommend this book if you are new to real estate or if you have a few properties under your belt. You won't regret buying this book!
realistic, but don't have enough technical and maths.......2004-06-10
well, with all the hype in real estate investment, the author took a more realistic approach. and this is good. real estate investment is not something we should rush in because it simply tie up the capital for a considerable amount of time. i like the author's realistic and pragmatic approach. but on the other hand, it lack the maths for illustration, which may help the reader to grasp the concept more solidly.. 4 stars.
Incredible.......2004-04-27
that a book about real estate (creating FINANCIAL independence no less), both residential and COMMERCIAL, and covers no math, no numbers. How can a book even propose to teach you about real estate and not tell you how to evaluate it? Real estate, or any investment for that matter, is ALL about the numbers. The numbers it does include are so basic, anyone who tried to buy an apartment complex or commercial property using them would be slaughtered.
Great for the beginning investor!.......2001-01-16
This book does some things very well. It helps one decide whether real estate investment is right for them, it helps one to understand the benefits and/or drawbacks of investing in real estate, and it comprehensively describes the different types of real estate investments. Also, the processes and terminologies are all discussed in very understandable terms.
However, as with many real estate investment books, and perhaps understandably, it fails to go beyond the basics. If you are looking for a treatise on in-depth real estate investment analysis, this book probably is not for you.
With that said, it was a quick, fun, and inspiring read. I would certainly recommend it to someone is just starting out.

Book Description
The creation, development, and operations of the Army of the Potomac as experienced through the eyes of its commanders are studied in detail for the first time.
There have been many studies of the generals who commanded the Union's victorious Army of the Potomac, but none has considered the corps, division, and brigade commanders (and their all-important staff officers) through the entire war--until now. Placing their actions in the social, political, military, and economic context of the day, this original and thought-provoking book examines in meticulous detail the command and performance of the brave and controversial officers of the Union's main fighting force.
This study in command, the first of a multi-volume work, is based entirely on manuscript sources, many of which have never before been examined. As a result, the narrative and conclusions about the actions of many of the Union's prominent generals differ--often significantly--from traditional historical thinking. What emerges is a much different picture of these men and how their personalities influenced their command decisions and the political atmosphere that influenced and determined their military careers. The Army of the Potomac is about the leaders as men--their successes and failures commanding the Union's largest army.
Customer Reviews:
Nice history of the origins of the Army of the Potomac.......2007-03-25
Russel Beatie develops a history of the origins of the Army of the Potomac. He notes that (page xv): "This is the story of a group of men during a short but extraordinary period in their lives." He also observes that his role model is D. S. Freeman, who focused on the development and actions of the Army of Northern Virginia.
This is a nice detailed work of the personalities at the beginning, the crucible of battle, the various components of the Army. There is a nice, brief Appendix on battlefield maneuvers.
The book itself begins at the beginning, with Winfield Scott as the head of the Army. Although a southerner, he remained loyal to the Union as its army's Commander-in-Chief after the breaking out of the Civil War. There is a segment entitled "Dramatis Personae" at the outset of the book, providing brief biographical sketches of key figures in the early days of the Army of the Potomac, including such figures as Scott, Charles Stone, Robert Patterson, Fitz-John Porter to George McClellan. These sketches provide nice context for what follows.
The Army begins to emerge as volunteers and regulars from throughout the North wended their way to Washington, D. C. Irvin McDowell was the first head of the Army. The book traces the organizing of the Army and its first foray into Virginia, culminating with the Union near victory but, in the end, chaotic defeat at Bull Run/Manassas. The antiquated Robert Patterson's failure to pin down Confederate General Joseph Johnston in the Shenandoah Valley was a key factor in the Union defeat.
Once the Army returned to the area of Washington, D. C, after the defeat, General George McClellan entered the picture. A wonderful organizer, he would prove wanting as a field commander in battle. However, he was the person to take a mob and make it into a finely honed instrument of battle--the Army of the Potomac.
The text goes on to note the conflict between McClellan and Scott, contentiousness between McClellan and Abraham Lincoln, and so on. Discussion also notes the headquarters staff as it developed, the evolution of the cavalry and artillery in the army. Finally, a chapter on the engineers completes the volume.
This book is very nice in that it lays the stage for understanding how the Army of the Potomac developed in all its detail. It is not a compellingly written book, and one can almost drown in some details. Nonetheless, Beatie does a real service by providing a detailed examination of the early months of this fighting vehicle.
A good book,not a great one.......2004-12-06
I was somewhat disappointed in this book. Mr. Beatie is a fine researcher, but not a great writer. I didn't like that he quoted verbatim long conversations as they appeared in memoirs many years later. That got a bit old. More paraphrasing would have been preferable.
Also, although the examples of history are sometimes useful, I didn't like many of the "off message" moments where Beatie talked in detail about how the ancients or Napoleon addressed a particular issue germane to the development of the Army of the Potomac.
Also, there are a lot of choppy sentences. The book needed a better edit job.
I'm hoping for better from Volume II. The main redemning aspect of Vol. I is that it covers a period rarely examined in this detail. It's good to break some new ground. I just don't think this book did so in a highly effective manner.
Start of an epic.......2004-11-09
The AOP is one of the storied armies in American history. This book is the first, of a series, that fully tells that story. Very detailed, fully documented but reads like a novel giving information and fun at the same time.
The advantage of this treatment is that we see things as they saw them. Rumor has to be considered and we understand why it was thought that 100,000 men were marching on Washington. Ed Beares is another author that has mastered a detailed redaable history. This compares very well with his work.
The beginning of what could be a very important series.......2004-08-10
I was skeptical of this book when I first picked it up. I mean the book only covers the Army of the Potomac from November 1860 to September 1861 and yet is a good 600 pages long by a writer for all intensive purposes is an unknown. I was half expecting a very dry read but boy was I wrong. Instead I got one of the best Civil War books I've read in a while.
The book is intended to be the first in a series of books covering the history of the Army of the Potomac. This volume covers the formation of the army in the early days of the war.
I think one of the things I really enjoyed about this book is it dealt with areas, details and people that few other books deal with. How does one create an army? How do you get these regiments from the north down to Washington which is almost cut off due to the city of Baltimore? The problems were immense.
Attempting to solve these problems were men whom we have seldom heard much about or if we have we have heard about them it's mostly from later in the war for other things. This book deals with men like Benjamin Butler, Charles Stone, Robert Patterson and Elmer Ellsworth. Footnotes in many other books, here they take center stage alongside more familiar names like Fitz-John Porter, Irvin McDowell, Winfield Scott and of course George McClellan as they do their part in securing Washington DC and helping in the early creation of what would become the Army of the Potomac.
Russel Beatie definately has written a great book here that I think most Civil War enthusiasts will greatly enjoy. It has wonderful detail and yet is never slow or dry. I really can't wait to read the other volumes in the series. I think once completed it will be an important part of anyone's Civil War book collection.
The Army of the Potomac : The beginning of the begining!.......2003-10-07
Russel Beatie has done an excellent job with his first volume on the long and storied history of the Army of the Potomac! In this first volume he seeks to do for the greatest of the Union armies what Douglas Southall Freeman did for the fabled Army of Northern Virginia.
It is probable that Beatie's book will sell far fewer copies than did Dr. Freeman's classic work. However, the book is well worth pouring over its detailed pages as lawyer Beatie sketches the first confusing months of the Civil War from the Union viewpoint.
As someone who has read Civil War literature for many years I confess that my knowledge of the Army of the Potomac is vastly inferior to what I know of Lee's legions. Beatie is strong on character sketches of such men as Winfield Scott, Irvin McDowell and the engimatic and controversial George Brinton McClellan.
For these sketches alone the book is valuable. His battle descriptions are succint but well done. The maps are helpful to the text and easy to read.
I noticed a few typos and factual errors but am much impressed by the long years of Beatie's resources. His bibliograpy of first person eyewitness acocunts and unit histories is vast.
I look forward to volume two which will pick up the story from September, 1861. I am in awe of his research and dedication to getting this book published!

Indispensible for the serious birder.......2001-03-04
This book is one of my favorite birding books. I am reticent to call it a field guide because it is so much more than that. Incredible amounts of information on all the sparrows. Great range maps AND descriptions of migration and vagrancy (can I hope to see this bird in my area?), and all the other natural history and behavior information you'd expect. Beautiful plates showing ALL the different plumages, primary and basic, male, female and juvenal. And it's not just a wealth of information, it's a beautiful book, well written and a delight to own.
A readable, useable, technical guide........1999-02-25
Sparrows. Yippee. But if you want to learn them, this is the book.
Lots of detail, as you'd expect, but very clearly presented. Terrific illustrations and range maps. And what I like, but some will hate, is the fairly detailed treatment of every field-identifiable subspecies. Some of these subspecies will become full species some day, if present trends continue, and you'll be way ahead of the game if you've already been working on telling them apart. Plus it's fun; just try to keep an open mind.
Book Description
This companion volume to the previous, widely acclaimed Guide to the Identification and Natural History of the Sparrows of the United States and Canada takes sparrow identification one step further. The authors have gathered a stunning selection of over 350 photographs as a basis for the identification of all 64 taxa of emberizine sparrows found in the region. Never before has such a comprehensive collection of sparrow photos been presented together in a single guide.
The supporting text gives detailed information on the identification of species, sexes, ages, races, and forms of all the sparrows, towhees, juncos, buntings and longspurs, grassquits and seedeaters, as well as information on their distribution, habits, habitats, molt, and voice. Particular attention is paid to the geographic variation found in many species and to comparisons with similar and confusing species. The conservation status of those that are threatened is also given due attention.
The photographs include contributions from many of America's finest bird photographers, and many were taken especially for this book. All fine portraits in themselves, they have been chosen specifically to illustrate the identification pointers described in the text. Each is captioned with full details of the photographer and the place and time at which the photo was taken. Also included are line drawings of identification details such as wing and tail feathers and beaks, as well as distribution maps.
Key Features:
- Features 350 high quality photographs of each species, subspecies, and racial form identifiable in the field
- Includes line drawings of identification details such as wing and tail feathers, beaks, etc.
- Contains distribution maps for each species

Fantastic book for id of sparrows!!.......2003-11-28
In the winter time here in Virginia we get a number of differnt types of sparrows that migrate in. I love watching them but was having difficulty determining which types were which from just the regular field guides so I asked around and one of our local birders recommended this to me. Its terrific! The pictures of the birds are close-up - as if you were holding the bird or were sitting on the ground less than a foot away looking at the bird. This really helps when trying to distinguish the slight differences in colors or patterns. Each species has a chapter that strats out with measurements (size, weight etc) then there's a range map, and some text on habitat, then some text on behavior and voice/songs. There's writing about similar species, geographic variation, distribution (winter, breeding, migration periods), conservation status, and molt. There's also text descriptions for specific markings etc to hone in on, and discussion of hybrids if any. Then the chapter has pictures, of boys, girls, adults, juveniles, etc. Really a great book that has helped me a lot. I'd buy it again in a heart beat.
