4 out of 5 stars Much more than cemetaries.......2001-06-14

I am a history buff and my ancestors arrived in New Orleans as early as 1831. This book helped me to make sense of the social-religious stratification of New Orleans. Jews, protestants, Slaves, freemen, firemen, police etc all buried in separate areas if not separate cemetaries. I hope the city keeps up these important parts of their history for future generations. Ny dad was at one time the chauffeur for William Helis who had his tomb made like the acropolis and imported soil from Greece to rest on. Very well done and informaive book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Historical And Architectural Resource!.......1999-08-06

An excellent, detailed documentation of this very important part of New Orleans, past and present.

5 out of 5 stars A good source for quick ideas.......2000-10-30

I like this book because it has ideas for quick projects and a lot of them you can do with kids at home or in a classroom. I didn't know that stencils are so easy to make with heavy plastic sheets and I've made stencils to decorate my bathrooms as well as gift wrapping paper. My kids can just tell me what kinds of rubber stamps they want and I cut them myself - a huge savings and one of a kind designs! I even made a portfolio carrier that I use to carry sheet music to classes and everybody loves it. I highly recommend this book for really easy and usable ideas.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for the beginner.......2000-03-29

Being new to papermaking, I found this book to be a great starting point. It has a lot of really great photographs but is slightly lacking in photos and illustrations to accompany the instructions. On the positive side, it also includes some basic projects to make with your handmade paper.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful and useful introduction to paper.......2006-01-01

I picked this book up initially because it has it has lots and lots of beautiful pictures. It covers both papermaking in both the Western and Eastern traditions, and breaks down techniques into simple, intermediate and advanced techniques, with excellent step-by-step photographs. Unlike many craft books I've bought, I'm actually confident I could follow the instructions given (even if my mould and deckle are still sadly pristine -- so many projects, so little time!)

While my adventures in papermaking have remained largely in the planning states, I've returned to this book for inspiration because there is as good a coverage of what to do once you've made the paper as there is of how to make it. Again the techniques range from the very basic (piercing, embossing, folding, dyeing) to the advanced (pulp embedding, molding) , but the really nice thing is the projects shown to go with the basic techniques don't have that "starter project" look to them, and inspiration galleries are full of gorgeous fine art applications by a wide range of artists.

If you are looking for a hardcore papermaking technique book and know exactly what you want to do with it, go straight to Hiebert's "The Papermaker's Companion". But if you are looking for a more general introduction to techniques and possibilities, this is a really nice way to start.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning Photography of Ireland's Coasts.......2007-02-26

Kevin Dwyer's "Ireland - Our Island Home" highlights that island's heritage with a stunning collection of aerial photographs around Ireland's coastline. The images, shot from helicopters and small planes at low altitude and oblique angles, provide beautiful, detailed panoramas. The contrasting scenary ranges from the urban areas around Dublin and Cork to the wilds of West Ireland. A series of captions and miniature maps describe the subjects and the general locations where the photographs were taken.

The photographs are a reminder of how varied the Irish landscape can be, and how beautifully green it looks from the air (and from the ground). Lighthouses, farm fields, sheep pastures, and small villages mingle with old forts and modern port facilities. This book is highly recommended to those who have been to Ireland, and to those who plan to go. The book provides a unique perspective on a lovely country.

5 out of 5 stars not just another coffee table book.......2004-05-23

We went to Ireland and picked up this book while we were there. I was afraid that it would be cheaper in the U.S. -- we paid 30 euros -- and it was. Still, we have no buyer's regret.

This is a set of stunning aerial shots of the Irish coastline. While we took what we think are very good pictures, these are beautiful pictures that we cannot duplicate because they are aerial. They will be treasured reminders of many of the places that we visited.

If you're going to Ireland, been to Ireland, or just wish that you could go, and you love to hang out in coastal areas, this is a book for you.

        Book Description

At the foundation of today's leading-edge manufacturing companies is a vision for virtual, distributed, enterprise in an agile environment where organizations can swiftly and cost-effectively bring products from concept to production, and respond dynamically to changes in customer and market requirements. This book provides, in simplified terms, key definitions, a framework, and a methodology for understanding and mapping current enterprise configurations as well as for designing the revised architecture needed for the totally integrated enterprise. It establishes a framework and methodology for realizing these objectives. It also aids the manufacturer in selecting the MRPII, MES, APS, SCM, or ERP software most appropriate to their firm's needs and for achieving total enterprise integration.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent business and technical overviews of ERP.......2002-06-19

This book bridges the business and IT domains. It educates business process owners on the capabilities and technologies that provide tools to support operations, and gives IT insights into how to best develop and deploy systems that meet business requirements.

Integration is assumed to be within the context of ERP systems, which are enterprise-wide in scope. The level of detail is kept reasonably high so that both audiences can easily grasp the key issues and understand the challenges and needs of the other. What I like about the book is the fact that it never loses sight of business requirements, and the manner in which it stays focused on quality and real world issues. I also like the way case studies are used to reinforce some of the more abstract aspects of enterprise integration.

Highlights of this book that will interest both business and IT include:

        - Totally Integrated Enterprise Goals and Agile Enterprise, which give a business framework for the technology solutions that are discussed later in the book

        - Methodology for Understanding Enterprises, which places integration and technology into the context of meeting business requirements

        - Business Development and Product Management, which provide insights to IT about the challenges that their business constituents face and their support requirements

Because this book is a high level view of enterprise integration many details that support the decision to employ integrated systems and how to implement them are missing. However, the true value of this book is the way it brings together business and technical information and the way the authors have managed to address both groups that are normally widely separated.

If you are seeking a book about deciding whether of not to implement an enterprise-wide system I recommend "Enterprise Resource Planning Systems: Systems, Life Cycle, Electronic Commerce, and Risk" by Daniel Edmund O'Leary. If you are more interested in an implementation methodology I recommend "E-Business and ERP: Rapid Implementation and Project Planning" by Murrell G. Shields.

          Book Description

Tracing the transformation of the Colorado delta by irrigated agribusiness through the twentieth century, Ward draws on untapped archival resources from both sides of the border to offer a new look at one of the world's most contested landscapes. He explores the rapid development of the region, examining the ways in which politics and international relations created a garden in the Mexicali, Yuma, and Imperial Valleys while simultaneously threatening the life of the Colorado River.

4 out of 5 stars Works both ways.......2001-04-16

This is the first book that I read on NFP and it served to be the most informative and useful. Before reading the book I had only heard of the famous rhythm method. This book opened a door to many different signs that a women can use to tell when she is fertile. I have used these signs (along with prayer) to GET pregnant (so I don't understand the other reveiwer).

I would happily recommend this book to anyone wanting to conceive as well as those that want a safe way to prevent conception.

3 out of 5 stars From Someone practicing NFP.......2001-04-12

I have been using NFP for a year now and am always looking for information to make me more educated on the subject. I sought this book to round out my education. For my purposes, it does serve me but this is not a book to be used for beginners, wanting to learn how to do Natural Family Planning/Natural Birth Control. This book is definitely towards birth control--as the title states--so I would not recommend it for those trying to learn how to achieve pregancy necessarily. I also would not recommend this book for those going off of the pill--it gives only a paragraph of information about that. This book is very good at giving biology and can be helpful in giving slightly different wording for helping someone to learn the signs of fertility. The author basically uses the Thermal Method of NFP and uses the other portions of NFP--cervix, mucus-- as secondary signs. If for some reason you can't do your temperature or want to use the sympto method, this is not the book for you.

4 out of 5 stars Signs of Fertitlity - Second Edition.......2000-07-03

A MUST FOR ALL WHO ARE INTERESTED IN OR WHO ARE PRESENTLY PRACTICING NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING! A tremendous amount of research went into this little book. Although it is directed toward those interested in birth control, there's too much information here for those seeking to achieve pregnancy to ignore. It explains more than one method of Natural Family Planning and suggests using them together for a higher success rate in birth control or in achieving pregnancy. The beginning of this book is hard because of the scientific wording. It teaches you exactly what is happening with your body. If you can make it through the difficult but short first chapters, the center of the book is an absolute GOLD MINE! I highly recommend it to all women whether you are looking to achieve pregnancy, practice birth control, or are premonopausal. However, if you are just beginning to learn Natural Family Planning, this book will not stand alone. I strongly urge you to buy more than one book, no matter what book you buy. It is too important. Add this one to your list and you won't be sorry.

4 out of 5 stars Third book in series rounds out WW2.......2002-07-22

This is the third book in Gerald Astor's WW2 series covering American servicemen in all theaters, for the duration of the war. Now that I've finished the series, I can more completely comment on the books. While I enjoyed them, I must comment that there's as much left out (in terms of types of fighting, etc.) as there is included in the books.

For one thing, there's almost nothing on the Navy's war with the Japanese, and nothing at all on the War in the Atlantic. Combat in Italy seemingly stopped with the capture of Rome, the war in Burma is only briefly mentioned, and parts of the campaign in the Pacific are completely ignored. I will grant, however, that what's here is well-presented, with a thoughtful commentary hanging it together so that it makes sense.

I will comment on one further annoying thing. There are several places here where he quotes from books or authors that are reasonably well-known. For instance, two of the best known Marines-turned-military historians, Richard Wheeler and E.B.Sledge, get quoted in this book. Now I've read both men's accounts of their time in the war, so I don't need them rehashed, and I would have preferred something about someone I didn't have access to myself.

That being said, this is still a good book, and well worth the time invested reading it.

                  Book Description

When Noriko and Don Carroll moved from New York City to suburban Las Vegas, they found a tiny nest on a clothesline on their back porch. As the Carrolls settled into their new home, so did a female hummingbird they named Honey. For weeks, the Carrolls watched in fascination as they witnessed an event few humans are privy to-the birth and growth of two hummingbirds.

First Flight is the beautifully photographed story of Honey and her two chicks, Ray and Zen. In over 50 stunning, full-color close-ups, it captures the grace, the beauty, and the simultaneous strength and fragility of one of nature's tiniest birds.

Professional photographer Don Carroll's images of his tiny housemates are woven throughout with Noriko's charming narrative describing the mother bird and her developing brood.

Not just for bird enthusiasts, First Flight is a magical mix of hummingbird field guide, personal story, and new life taking flight. Readers will be captivated by the inherent drama as it unfolds in miniature, and they'll cheer as babies Ray and Zen make their own first flights out into a bright new world.

                  5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable.......2007-05-10

We enjoyed this picture-story of a mother hummingbird. Excellent photographs and clear text. A book every (humming)birdlover will enjoy.

                  5 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2006-11-10

This is a great book - I bought it for my mom and dad as they have lots of hummingbirds. But I had to check it out before I gave it to them. LOVED IT!!

5 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL EXPERIENCE, BEAUTIFUL BOOK.......2006-09-24

This exquisite book is about loving and caring for what one loves. The Carroll's masterpiece springs from their love for Honey the Hummingbird as they daily devote themselves to watching her from her return from wintering in Mexico, the laying of two eggs in a nest on a clothesline which she had previously built and inhabited, the birth of her babies, which the Carrolls named Ray and Zen, and her nurturing of them until and after their fledgling flights.

Everything about this book is done with devotion and great care. The text, written by Noriko Carroll, is a perfect accompaniment to what seems to me genius level photographs taken by Don Carroll. There are special lighting effects as a background to many of the photographs, and Mr. Carroll explains in an afterword called "Photographics Notes" that a mirror reflecting parts of his flower garden was used to create these stunning effects. I plan to order another copy of this book, take it to a framer and request that several of the photographs be removed and framed, to be hung on a wall of my home.

The description on the inside of the book jacket cover is even unique. It is not the standard patois one usually reads. It is done with great care, depth and intelligence. It is the finest of its kind I have ever read.

You will learn a great deal about hummingbirds, and if you have a backyard feeder, you will find out the proper and best way to maintain it. You will become more aware of the hummingbirds in your yard and in your life. And, unless you have a heart of stone, you will end up loving them, if you do not do so already.

I heartily thank the Carrolls for their magnificent undertaking of introducing us to the life and ways of this wonderful bird and her offspring. It is their artistic skills, their intact sense of wonder and awe (which so many tend to lose in adulthood), and their capacity to love which has brought this book to us. Quite a gift!

5 out of 5 stars Noriko and Don Carroll have done it again........2006-06-20

First, a wonderful memoir of their cat, "Happy Birthday", and now an even more surprising story, an example of patience, persistence, perception and love. The adventures of hummingbirds, an entire life cycle in vivid beautiful color, and amazingly intimate details (this from a new Yorker whose only contact with bird life is pigeons). I think you'll be as delighted as I was.

                  5 out of 5 stars Delightful!.......2006-05-13

A touching family portrait of hummers that is a feast for the eyes. I marveled at the technical wizardry of photographer Don Carroll and the simple prose by Noriko that did justice to this little wonder of nature. This book definetly stays on my coffee table!
