Showing how New Urbanism is simply American urbanism as it has been evolving since the nineteenth century, this is a history not of what has been achieved but rather of what planners have sought to achieve--a history of the quest for good cities.

In her survey of the last hundred or so years of urbanist ideals, the author identifies four approaches to city-making, which she terms "cultures": incrementalism, plan-making, planned communities, and regionalism. She shows how these cultures connect, overlap, and conflict one with another and how most of the ideas about building better settlements are so recurrent.

She concludes with an assessment of the successes and failures of the four cultures and the need to integrate these ideas as a means to promoting good urbanism in America.

A Nice Mix of Vintage Erotic Art.......2004-09-30

The cover on this book is a bid misleading, as it might give one the impression that it's about vintage nude photography, but this is more about erotic art from the 19th and early 20th centuries, which includes photos, drawings, and paintings. It specifically features artwork that accentuates the beauty the of the buttocks, both male and female. And much of the material is quite sexual. That's the real treasure here - many of the images a rare gems of erotica that must have totally dazzled the original audience, but still possess the power to titillate modern-day viewers who might not otherwise be so easily impressed. The text provided by Döpp is very interesting and despite his academic background is very readable and informative. The "backside obsessions" of such luminaries as Goethe, Mozart, Rousseau, and de Sade are lighted upon in marvelous fashion.

All-in-all this is an excellent piece of vintage erotica that's visually stunning as well as intellectually stimulating ... without being overly clinical or academic.

"THIS is not a book that requires the reader to be a geek or techie to understand the concepts and terms mentioned in it. The focus is on 10 technologies that'll shape the future, be it web services, security, grid computing, linux, XML or wireless technologies. Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and nanotechnology too figure in this Top 10 list. The writers explain the critical role these technologies play in driving business and how corporates and their clients can benefit from them.

Buzzword Intro for Non-Techies.......2004-11-30

I bought 10 Technologies to help me with my understanding of what's new and emerging. I work in sales so this book provided an excellent introduction to some of the buzzwords I have heard bandied about the office. It is tight, well written and pitched at the right level for a non-techie like me. I would recommend it.

Excellent Overview of current and emerging technologies.......2004-10-23

This book is a great introduction to the latest technologies around. It is written for the non-technical manager and gives a solid grounding in what each area is about. I found the Wireless section particularly useful as I use this everyday in my job. There are 10 chapters and the Must Know section at the end of each. Worth the price in my opinion.

Superficial and errorneous.......2004-09-17

I thought this should be a good book. I read it through within 45 minutes and got really annoyed. It glossed over too much stuff, even for a management-type book. Some of the terminologies were incorrect. He even said that Gordon Moore is called "George" Moore. You can learn more by grabbing any magazine and start reading an article on these things (Web Services, Nanotech, Security, Grid Computing, Linux, Wireless Tech, XML, CRM, J2EE, .Net).

From the author: Eating a variety of foods--especially whole grains, fruits, and vegetables--ensures the intake of many of the nutrients and other substances essential for good health. Measuring variety is complex, and many different definitions have been proposed. Eating a variety of foods is one of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans--though written in slightly different terms in some of the 5-year updates since the Guidelines were first introduced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) in 1980. An application of the variety guideline is a component of the USDA's Healthy Eating Index (HEI), a summary measure of overall diet quality that measures compliance with the Guidelines. This report explains the methodology of the HEI's variety measure, as calculated by the USDA Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (CNPP). CNPP uses four main databases to construct the variety measurement: the Food Guide Pyramid Servings Database, the Recipe Database, a list of distinct foods, and a dietary intake database. An HEI variety score is assigned between 0 and 10 points, with eight or more different or "unique" foods consumed during 24 hours earning 10 points; three or fewer unique foods, 0 points. To demonstrate this methodology, we applied the HEI variety measured to the U.S. population by using dietary intake data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2000 to estimate 1-day dietary variety in the United States.

Development Examples not Process Oriented.......2000-08-15

This book is a well written piece of information centering on past power center development. It is a little outdated currently; however, it does show the pitfalls and highpoints of a large number of quite successful power center development projects. Unfortunately it does not cut much below the surface of these projects and offers little practical advice. Good for understanding past projects in a slightly different time and market. I would not recommend it to anyone searching for a how-to book since it is little more than facts and numbers about past projects and not ideas.

A Must Read.......2007-05-21

I read Cmd Bucher's Book "My Story", then Lt Murphy's Book "Second in Command". Armbrister's account fills in all the parts missing. It let's you know what's going on back home. If you want to learn anything about this event read this book.

An incident that echoes in current events.......2005-11-30

This book provides excellent coverage of the Pueblo incident from a number of viewpoints, including a number of the captured men as well as those involved in the crisis response and negotiations.

I found this book provides compelling testimony in the debate over "questionable methods" in the current conflict. The brutal torture that the men of the Pueblo endured only managed to extract fantastic "confessions" and steel the men's resolve to resist their captors.

One of the most embarrassing chapters in US Navy history.......2005-10-25

I read this book when I was stationed in Guam in 1981 and never forgot it. The seizure of the USS Pueblo is one of the most embarrassing chapters in Naval history. The USS Pueblo is the only ship that United States Navy has on it's active roster but does not have custody- the ship is a museum in the Wosan harbor of North Korea.
Trevor Armbrister does and outstanding job pointing out the United States Navy's deep committment of it's air power to North Vietnam. So committed that it did not have the air power to committ to provide support for the USS Pueblo, although 500 miles from where the incident occurred was the biggest aircraft carrier, the USS Enterprise. The pilots were never even briefed as to what was happening to the USS Pueblo. During the entire time of the North Korean attack, the crew was in direct contact with the National Security Administration (NSA), and was informed that help was on the way in the form of F-105 aircraft. The crew watched the sky for hours- planes never arrived! The next morning the whole world woke up to the news - US NAVY SHIP SEIZED ON THE HIGH SEAS. The first to see it was Rose Bucher, the wife of Commander Lloyd Bucher, Commanding Officer of USS Pueblo. The question that everyone asked was, "How can this happen to one of the most powerful navies in the world?"
The seizure of the USS Pueblo enabled the Soviets to assess the authenticity of what John Walker was selling. The North Koreans were counterparts with the Soviets, and the equipment needed to asses the quality of Walker's material came off the USS Pueblo.

Worse Than it Seemed at the Time.......2005-03-08

It was tragic news when the spy ship Puible was captured with her crew. The whole country watched for months while the negeotiations were carried out to free the crew.

What wasn't known for many years was the fact that this was part of the biggest intelligence loss the United States ever had.

The Pueblo was filled with the most secret intelligence euipment the US posessed at that time. Equipment not unlike that found on U-110, the German Enigma machine. Knowing that this most secret equipment was now in the hands of the North Koreans the United States immediately changed its codes. After all, like the Enigma, the equipment wasn't useful without the codes. Unknown at the time was that the North Koreans immediately invited the Russians to examine/study, maybe even take home, the machines.

But during this time, the Walker spy ring was supplying the Russians with the daily codes. For years during this critical time in the Cold War, the Russians were "reading our mail."

The Pueblo is a story of arrogance on the Navy's part that created an attitude of infallibility and confidence that no one would ever attack a U.S. Navy ship. They were wrong.

Well researched and well written, this is a book that remains on any student of modern history.

Put out by the National Audubon Society, you know it has to be good. This is a great, compact book that easily fits into your backpack or pocket or purse.

It has a full page picture of each bird, with the other side holding all information about that bird - map, identification, what it sounds like, where it likes to hang out, and more.

The perfect book for hiking and walking, plus keep one in your glove compartment!
