Elegance pervades this lovely guide filled with dozens of imaginative ways to decorate with candles. The author's background as an accomplished floral designer means that flowers (as well as fruits, berries, and other natural materials) play a prominent part in the beautiful projects. Stunning photos and good step-by-step instructions, complemented by detailed color sketches, simplify the process of making sconces, centerpieces, candelabras, and other candle-focused creations for everyday and holiday use. Styles range from rustic (rope and seashells holding a taupe beeswax candle; a driftwood sconce) to seasonal (spring blossoms trailing over a pillar pedestal; clove-studded oranges filled with votives) to sophisticated (a candelabra draped with velvet and grapes; a towering candlestick entwined with greenery and limes). Some of the arrangements are easy; others require patience and practice, but the excellent directions and the general techniques section provide all the needed information. In addition, a plant directory explains how to work with fresh materials, and a suppliers list offers extensive resources for candles and trimmings. --Amy Handy

2 out of 5 stars technically a good book, but too strange.......2006-09-07

This a good book if you look a the technical merits. It has a wide variety of styles with perfect instructions. The photo quality was excellent.
The main problem I had with this book was that most of the ideas did not appeal to me at all. I was disappointed that the majority of the presentations were huge and impractical centerpieces.

I have seen better candle-decorating books elsewhere .

5 out of 5 stars Excellent ideas and instructions.......2001-10-27

I review a lot of floral art books and I have to say this is one of my top picks for anyone wanting to arrange flowers with candles ,in a modern and innovative way.Spiral bound with unique fold out clear instructions, in this book you'll find the simple, the innovative, the stylish, all with the WOW factor!

5 out of 5 stars Truly bright ideas for watercolor. A real find........2005-12-13

I picked this up as a toss out book from the library. It had hardly been used, but the information is invaluable. I have just completed my sixth college art class, and I am constantly looking for new ideas and new inspirations. Bechwith's selections are inspiring. The book is divided into three parts: Techniques inspired by nature, techniques inpired by materials, and techniques inpired by technology. It covers the realm of naturalistic forms in novel approaches to digital art processes. There are some beautiful ideas in these pages. There are actual step-by-step examples of complex techniques - an approach that makes sense, followed by "showcase" sections of really fine artists who use varied techniques.

The Ice crystal technique is a nature artist's dream! The images created by the cobweb technique was my favorite. It really brought the child out in me. This book will be appreciated by all watercolor artists, beginner and professional.

        Book Description

The decade between the world wars witnessed an astonishing flowering of photography in Europe-- marked particularly by the unprecedented work of such figures as Man Ray, László Moholy-Nagy, and Alexander Rodchenko. Alongside the visual experiments ran a fascinating public discussion in which critics, artists, and the photographers themselves struggled to define the nature and possibilities of photography in the modern era. The seventy-one essays and documents collected in this book provide a concise, provocative introduction to the ideas and personalities that animated avant-garde photography during these years of artistic ferment and that continue to influence the medium today.

By turns poetic, analytical, and fiercely ideological, these diverse writings give expression to a very wide range of original ideas. Moholy-Nagy calls on photographers to create a powerful abstract vision that will transform our ability to see. Albert Renger-Patzsch argues for a quite different goal, a photography of revelatory realism that lays bare the essence of the subject before the lens. The French writer Pierre Mac Orlan explores psychologically compelling notions: that photography realizes "all that is curiously inhuman" and "creates death for a second." Photography is widely characterized as a modern machine-age art that supersedes the traditional fine arts. In the Soviet Union an extraordinary interchange pits the avant-gardist Rodchenko against opponents who insist that social usefulness is photography's primary responsibility.

While shedding important new light on the directions taken by photography during the twentieth century, these essays also illuminate such major movements as Futurism, Constructivism, Surrealism, and the New Objectivity. Most of the selections were not previously available in English and have been translated especially for this volume. Each appears with an informative headnote by Christopher Phillips, who in an introductory essay provides a lucid overview of the period and the context in which the writings first appeared.

With its wealth of new material, this collection is an essential resource for all those studying photography or seeking to understand the visual culture of this century.

This book is published on the occasion of the exhibition The New Vision: Photography Between the World Wars, Ford Motor Company Collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, September 23-December 31, 1989.

I have had an opportunity to review the book's manuscript, as it was being written. The book provides a very practical and visionary approach to recover from a Y2K disaster -- what it calls "Fireworks" -- using technology (object, distributed computing), methodology (adding method/sanity to madness, what a disaster tends to be) and sociology (people aspects). Using this vision, an organisation can position itself for the future, while recovering from a circumstance that may put it back in time.

Overall, a must read for IT planners, managers and architects -- confronting what management guru Peter Drucker would have called "Managing in Turbulent Times".

The book adds zero value to anyone with even rudimentary knowledge of real estate investing. It's mostly filled with pictures of houses in two different states showing how prices were different for the two states decades ago. The point was made after the first sentence stating that fact.

Quite simply, there is absolutely nothing of substance in this book. I wouldn't even recommend it to a novice. A complete waste of my time and money!

This is the BEST real estate book I've read - and I've brought almost every real estate book available on amazon[.com] or it's in my wish list. He states he is targeting African Americans. I am as white as they come - and this book is NOT just for African Americans - it's for everyone.
I am a novice. Most of the time the real estate "gurus" are so busy trying to motivate you to buy - or explain "creative financing" that they leave out the basics - what to actually do. How to take the FIRST STEP.
This book gives what questions to ask - gives examples and pictures (which helps since in my research I've been amazed at how reasonably priced investment homes are - and the pictures helped me to understand that yes it is that easy)
I cannot praise this book enough - and am buying 2 more copies today because I don't want to part with mine - I want it with me when I call on properties.

3 out of 5 stars Average...lacks detail; best read by real estate "newbies".......2001-11-26

As a seasoned apartment-building investor and broker, I would recommend this book only to someone who is new to real estate investing. At 119 pages of text, there is simply not much detail here for those who already own some investment property. I can't say I got one new idea from the book, and that's unusual.

Yes, I do agree that 2+ -unit multi-family properties are your best investment, outperforming the stock market by a factor of 3x and with low risk. However, I do not agree with the author's premise that your best bet is to pay off all the mortgages on your properties within 10 years and then live off the cash flow. This is NOT a strategy most knowledgeable investors would follow. Why? Because the money you are using to make additional principal payments on your existing properties could instead be used to buy more buildings, or improve the ones you own, resulting in significantly higher after-tax gains in the long term.

In reality, for the highest returns, your best bet is to leverage yourself to the max: Never put down more than 15% on a property, and try to put down the least amount you can and still get the property to "cash flow." (Just make sure you keep a cash reserve in the bank equal to at least 3 months of expenses.) If you do have excess cash flow, spend it on those building improvements that will allow you to directly raise rents as a result. After 5 years, either re-finance the property to pull your equity out and invest that in a new property (and repeat every 5 years), or "flip" this property into a larger property and do this repeatedly every 5 years.

Recommended reading instead of this book:

            5 out of 5 stars A worthy topic.......2004-07-05

I'm giving this book 5 stars because I find it a worthy topic and I agree with the fundamental concept of the book: that we should raise our children to have integrity, to be kind, caring and decent individuals. The book was written in a compassionate tone, in a narrative (no lists or bullets) with the use of many examples.

But forgive me ... if you are reading this book, you probably endorse the basic principle. So what is it that we are supposed to do as parents, as a society? I walked away pleased that the author had taken the time to cover this very valuable principle, but not as clear on what to do next that wasn't, well, fairly obvious. But still, the book was very grounding and much appreciated.

5 out of 5 stars A decent and caring person.......2003-10-30

I am sorry to see that this book is out-of-print. As an advice book for parents and for anyone who has anything to do with children it stands at the head of the pack. Unfortunately these days no awards are given for just being nice and schools no longer teach values, if they ever did. Furthermore, in our multicultural competitive environments there seems to be less of a consensus about what constitutes good, acceptable behavior. In some circumstances well brought up children may be disadvantaged in the schoolyard scene if they don't toughen up, or something of the sort. The book validates right motives and right values and encourages parents and others to make the case. The book is written by a rabbi but it isn't religious.

A mensch is a decent and caring person. There is no pattern or correct formula leading to the desired results. Only parents care about raising kind and courteous children. Our obsession with individualism and self-actualization may have detrimental effects on children. A person is not a mensch in isolation. Cheating in schools has become widespread because making it has crowded out other values. We should wonder why we are so obsessed with high achievement. It is forgotten that child rearing is really child loving. We should not be giving children the message that love is conditioned on accomplishments. Children want to be heard and understood. One cannot be an effective parent if one is frequently gone or uninvolved.

                    Book Description

Published in association with America's preeminent authority, the Smithsonian Institution, this comprehensive handbook to the birds of North America: Western Region includes 696 species -- all birds known to breed east of the 100th meridian on the United States and Canada, as well as regular visitors and vagrants to this region. The Smithsonian Handbook is the first identification guide that includes details of the bird's life history in a concise and user-friendly format. Each full-page profile combines a precise description, annotated photographs, and artworks to highlight the key field marks of the species in each plumage. Similar species are shown and distinguishing characteristics are noted. Further information on the bird's habits describes the typical song and other vocalizations, behavior, breeding, nesting, population, and conservation concerns. Typical flight patterns and nest locations and shapes are described with clear icons, and amplified in the text. Each bird's range during summer, winter, and on migration is clearly shown on a map.

                    5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous !!!1.......2002-11-08

While looking for a gift for an elderly relative who likes to watch birds but is not an avid birder, I happened upon this gorgeous book and was so impressed with it.

It is beautifully organized and illustrated. Birds are described by song, breeding habits, nesting, behavior, migration, population, flight pattern, conservation, as well as by the more obvious characteristics used for identification such as size, head, plummage, tail, markings, trill, and behavior.

Each page is laid out so nicely and with great clarity, and has space for notes on where and when the bird was sighted.

The silhouettes of the birds in flight was an interesting addition to the identification process.

The author(s) also included the variations within each species (variations due to sex, juvenile status, seasonal characteristics, and genetic differences).

One section contained the anatomy of a bird and another the orthinological terms, illustrated. Both were most interesting and added to making birds easier to identify.

3 out of 5 stars Not really a field guide, not really a natural history guide.......2002-03-02

Once upon a time, people who wished to identify and learn about birds found few books from which to choose. Today, however, there are many, and the competition between them for birders' purchasing dollars is keen. I tend to buy just about any book that bills itself as a "guide to the birds of North America," however, so I recently picked up Fred J. Alsop III's new Smithsonian Handbook. There is much to appreciate and enjoy here, and I can recommend the book as a welcome supplement to anyone's basic bird guide collection (especially people living the western states). However, by itself it is adequate neither as a guide to bird identification nor as a supplemental source of information about bird habits and natural history.

This book is long (752 pages) and definitely hefty. No one but a true masochist would consider carrying it into the field. Consequently, in terms of helping with bird identification, this guide at best can serve as a supplement to other current field guides. In this capacity, the book will indeed be useful with respect to many birds. Each full-page treatment of a species includes lots of useful information, including key field marks, range, vocalizations, distinctive behavioral habits, nesting habits, and even flight patterns.

The key to whether or not this works for particular types of birds lies in Alsop's approach to bird illustration. Here, he relies mainly upon high-quality photographs. For most birds, particularly songbirds, this works adequately. However, as is just about always the case with bird guides illustrated with photos, the results are uneven. Some of the photos are spectacular, but a few are so-so. What's more important, however, is that Alsop's reliance upon a single large photo for each bird precludes adequate illustration of species for which inclusion of more than one picture is essential. This mainly includes species for which flight patterns are important, including gulls, terns, pelagics, hawks, shorebirds, waterfowl, swifts and swallows, and nightjars. This adds up to a lot of species.

Traditional field guides also provide additional illustrations to show immature or fall plumages. Alsop does try to include additional illustrations for some of these plumages, but these extra drawings mostly are so tiny as to be virtually useless. For some species, at least, he would have done better to limit some of the verbal information to accommodate more space for these additional illustrations.

One of the strengths of the book is Alsop's obvious commitment to providing the reader with information pertaining to each bird's behavior, nesting habits, and population/conservation. Because the author is combining this effort with identification material, however, the book doesn't measure up to certain others in terms of being a complete "natural history guide."

To his credit, Alsop includes some extra materials that are welcome and well-done. There is a section on extinct species (including the Ivory-billed woodpecker, which apparently may not be extinct after all), and also some "how to's" on birding as a pastime.

Overall, however, I can recommend this book mainly to people who really enjoy owning lots of bird books. A good strategy for birders generally is to purchase one (or more) good field guides for identification purposes, and then to supplement these with another good book that provides natural historical information. This volume certainly has its uses and contains lots of excellent information, but in trying to be both identification guide and natural history guide, it doesn't truly succeed in either function.

5 out of 5 stars A true all inclusive guide..........2001-09-09

This is a wonderful book; each page has a single bird on it with all related information to the bird i.e. migrations (map showing in color what time of year the bird is found where), feeders, identifacation with clear pictures, song of the bird, behavior, breeding, nesting, population, conservation, size, wingspan, family, species, nest identification tips and chart, and habitat locations. In my opinion this book would be classified as a "must have" for a lover of birds and especially for a novice just getting into birds it is a excellent identification tool.

As a 40+ year novice birdwatcher, and incurable lover of books, I have acquired numerous field guides over the years. Raised on Peterson, in recent years I have enjoyed the Audubon guides by Farrand. Looking for something newer, I was assured that "The Sibley Guide to Birds" was now the king of the hill. Next to Sibley on my dealer's bookshelf was this Alsop. I already knew the publisher-Dorling Kindersley. They have perfected the art of visual teaching. This same teaching technique works very well for a nature field guide. There is a single page devoted to each species. The page is well laid out but packed with the information you want. The illustrations are superb-better than the Sibley. This book is a masterpiece, and I think will become a well-loved legend. It far surpasses Sibley, Peterson, and other field guides at this general, comprehensive level. Despite its breadth, it would be perfect for a beginning birdwatcher of any age. It must be new-I can't find it reviewed anywhere!
