Book Description
The classic text on the art and science of graphic communication in landscape architecture-now updated with all-new graphic examples of professional design work. To a great extent, your success as a landscape architect will depend upon the quality of the drawings and renderings you use to communicate your ideas at each stage of the design process. The purpose of this book is to show you examples of how to create persuasive presentation graphics that convey design ideas with clarity, precision, and grace to your intended audience. With the help of a comprehensive collection of contemporary design work, the authors acquaint you with the best traditional graphic presentation methods, as well as innovative new approaches used at some of today's leading landscape architecture firms. This new edition features:
* Graphic communication methods for all phases of the design process.
* Hand-rendering and computer-generated techniques.
* Coverage of lettering, color graphics, site analysis, conceptual drawings, construction documents, and finished renderings, sections, and elevations.
* More than 275 all-new graphics examples.
* A 48-page, full-color graphics gallery.
* Contributions from nearly 50 respected firms, including Altoon + Porter, Christy TenEyck, Design Workshop, EDSA, EDAW, Lehman Smith Wiseman, and Mesa Design Group.
The updated and expanded version of the book that has trained generations of landscape architects in effective graphic communication techniques, Plan Graphics, Fifth Edition is essential reading for landscape architecture students and entry-level landscape architects. It is also a valuable working resource for landscape architects, architects, planners, civil engineers, and landscape contractors.

Nice Pictures.......2007-05-25
The book had excellent graphics, but was all pictures. Didn't learn enough for my purppose, Showed proper presentation procedures. For that, it's great
Example-A-Thon.......2000-11-23
I was expecting a book which showed you how to draw beautiful plans and explain the techniques used to produce these drawings. Instead this book hardly touched upon the techniques. This book is nothing more than a collection of copied architectural drawings bound together for display.
A Professional Review.......1999-12-02
I teach Visual Communications at a College of Architecture and find that the 5th edition is a book that is an absolute necessity for anyone planning a future in architecture or landscape architecture. The selection of work represents a great variety of graphic communication techniques for the student and professional to review. The work is slanted to site issues, but can only help to reinforce the integration of site and structure. Not only does it present a variety of techniques, but also a collection of ideas that the student can learn from. It is also a great resource for the practicing professional. I use both this book and Color Drawing by Doyle in my course and find they make an excellent pair.

Is that....?.......2007-09-17
Outstanding look back at actors of yesteryear. Ever find yourself wondering if a particular actor had hair on his chest or arms? Wonder no more. Have fun gazing at these high quality photographs and saying to yourself - oh, I know who that is ...it's.... A true treat for the eye as well as the curiousity. Enjoyable book and a must have for the Hollywood beefcake buff. Now I want this publisher to produce "Shirtless in Swimwear" so we are able to see chests, arms and legs!!!
Great photographs, Tab Hunter a great cover.......2007-05-14
This was a nice surprise. I don't really buy coffee table books, there was no promise of great stories or even quotes from the subjects themselves. But it was fun to see the beefcake in Hollywood's golden and post golden era. Nice gift for a Christmas or birthday present of a fan of any number of hunks, from Tab Hunter to Clint Walker to Clint Eastwood and beyond.
Not Without Merit, But Disappointing.......2005-03-14
I was disappointed in "Shirtless ...," although there is no denying that the book offers some attractive pictures of some very attractive men. The first two problems, which are relatively minor, are Reuter's annoying political and cultural prejudices and his bias toward particular types of men.
A perfect example of his cultural prejudice comes in the caption to a photo of Tom Selleck. Reuter finds it a "dichotomy" that Selleck will play a gay man but "fiercely defend his NRA affiliation." Apparently, the idea that a gay-friendly man - let alone a gay man himself - might not tow the liberal line simply does not occur to him. However, this problem is easy to overlook by skimming over the text. (As another reviewer pointed out, it is leering and unsophisticated, so you're not missing much anyway.)
With regard to the second problem, the author obviously prefers perfect, gym-rat bodies to a more natural look and does indeed short-change hairy, masculine types. For example, Vince Edwards' biggest claim to fame as a sex object was his chest full of hair; so how is it that the author chooses a picture of Edwards with his chest shaved for probably the only time in his career? Here, too, Reuter frequently injects his "enlightened" cultural views with inane comments about maculinity and gender roles. However, there are still plenty of great pictures, and, despite his obvious bias, Reuter does show us quite a few moderately hairy guys.
So what's the big disappointment? It is in Reuter's focus on later decades. Half the book consists of photos from the 1970's through the 1990's. While some of the men are certainly sexy, the internet is full of pictures of stars from this era. Anyone who wants to ogle pictures of Richard Gere, Sylvester Stallone or Jude Law will find thousands of them on the internet. What I hoped to see more of were pictures of earlier stars, from the silent era through the 50's. The ones who did make into the book from those decades are great - they earned "Shirtless ..." the two stars it gets from me. However, Reuter's sneering comments about the bodies of early actors makes it clear that they were insufficiently Chippendales-esque for him and so got short shrift.
"Shirtless ..." is worth buying for these early photographs, if they interest you. If it's the pumped-up stars of today you want, just Google them. It will save you money and provide instant gratification besides.
Where's Robert Redford?.......2004-04-07
There are over 150 photographs here, many in color, of Hollywood actors from the famous to those barely remembered or not remembered at all. For the most part they are placed in chronological order. The chapters are "In The Beginning","The Thirties", "The Forties", "The Fifties", "The Sixties"," "The Seventies", "The Eighties", "The Nineties And Beyond", and a final chapter, "Man To Man" with photographs of "men of color", "pugilists", "changing body types", and "Tarzan types." Many of the hunks throughout the years you expect to see are here, and often in two-page color: Clark Gable who set off a firestorm in 1934 when he appeared in IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT with Claudette Colbert and revealed, as he prepared for bed, that he wasn't wearing an undershirt, thereby changing the wearing apparel of the American male forever. In spite of his weight now, Marlon Brando will always represent the 50's as the steamy Stanley in A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE. (pp. 42-43) Paul Newman, still handsome and sexy as he approaches 70, calls to mind the 60's. Burt Reynolds in the 70's became famous for his nude photo in COSMOPOLITAN magazine. One could hardly pick up a magazine in the 80's without seeing the smooth-chested Richard Gere on the cover. One's acting ability obviously has nothing to do with who makes the cut here so we have Tab Hunter on the cover of this book and see the likes of George Hamilton and Pat Boone inside, along with two actors who later became governors of California. Worst photo selection of a very attractive actor is for that of Alec Baldwin. Where did he get that spikey haircut I ask?
While I understand this is not as important as whether or not the U. S. found weapons of mass destruction when we invaded Iraq, but missing in action, just to name three, are Warren Beatty, Steve McQueen and Robert Rutherford. How could either of these been omitted when Pat Boone was included?
Finally a word about the layout-- the author apparently wanted to imitate the move fan magazines of the past (PHOTOPLAY, for example)-- this works rather well, but the names of the actors in white outlined in black and two different kinds of type, some of it bold and some of it not, make for very difficult reading.
Description.......2002-11-29
Commentary from Victor Terry of "Checkmatemag.com": Non-fiction. Illustrated. Index. Pictures of shirtless actors decade by decade from George O'Brien and Rudolph Valentino (the 20s) to Brendan Fraser and Brad Pitt (the 90s). Most of those pictured are noted for their film work, but some, like David Chokachi, Erik Estrada, Mark Harmon, and Michael Landon, are primarily known for their tv work. This parade of pecs shows how male physical development has changed over the years in Hollywood and thus in the country, from natural to gymbunny pumperup, with stops along the way for boys next door, frat boys, beachboys, twinkies, natural physiques, musclemen and bodybuilders, James Bonds, Tarzans; among those shown shirtless are John Barrymore, Harry Belafonte, Troy Donahue, Jamie Foxx, Cary Grant, Jude Law, Bruce Lee, Jason Scott Lee, Ricardo Montalban, Ronald Reagen, Sabu, Antonio Sabata Jr, Clint Walker more than 160 men, plus some unidentified men (one of whom is Ray Walston). Many of the men are hairy torso'd, but some have shaven torsos. (The hairiest chests shown? Probably Alec Baldwin, Sam Elliott, and Chuck Norris.) Reuter includes no genital nudity but he does include Leonard Whiting's bare butt.

Marine Protected Areas: Principles and Techniques for Manage.......2001-07-03
The book covers interesting and useful guide in aspects of marine protected area, from the history of Marine Protected Area (MPA), what to consider and how to select site of MPA to management, enforcement, and building the awareness. I particularly like the chapter that discuss the MPA concept and the importance of getting the community involvement (which will ensure the sustainability of the MPA), also the marine education and interpretation.
I read the book from a library in UK and would like to have one. Unfortunately the quality of this books is shown by its price, which not affordable for me who come from developing countries where the techniques can be put in practice.
This is a book worth reading for those involve in any aspects of marine (and community) issues and/or works in small islands.

Book Description
The Landsknecht (meaning 'servant of the country') flourished during a key period for military organisation and practice. In the late 15th century, the Holy Roman Emperor, Maximilian I, recruited thousands of mercenaries from Central and Northern Europe, with the aim of creating a reliable source of men for his armies – and the Landsknecht were born. This book reveals the true-life experiences of the Landsknecht soldier, using numerous first-hand accounts. It takes a close look at the recruitment, training, daily life and and careers of these formidable soldiers, and examines in detail their clothing, equipment and weaponry. Many fine, contemporary illustrations, some drawn by Landsknecht themselves, accompany the text.
Customer Reviews:
The first modern Army.......2006-07-10
Richards provides an excellent account of the Landsknecht mercenaries of the renaissance in this work. I particularly enjoyed his section on the structure of a Landsknecht regiment and the officers that led it- the roles of the nachrichter and hurenweibel were quite amusing. Richards certainly proves in this work that the Landsknechts were the first to make use of a modern regimental structure. He also goes into vivid detail describing the Landsknecht costume. I have only one major complaint- Richards spends almost no time in detailing the weapons of the Landsknecht or their battle tactics. He does briefly mention (in the caption of an illustration), the significance of the katzbalger, a Landsknecht's favourite sword, and in his colour plates displays the tactics of a regiment during a battle, but he doesn't write much on either subject. Nonetheless the book was very enjoyable, and worth buying if you're keen on the subject.
Transports you to the life of the Renaissance Mercenary.......2003-08-12
John Richards and Gerry Embleton make a nice team in this new title for the Osprey Warrior series LANDSKNECHT SOLDIER 1486-1560, if you ever wonder the origin of this Servant of the Country this is one of the best intro to the subject, the famous Landsknecht were one of the best infantry soldiers of the Renaissance,Mercenary Pikemen was one of the deadliest weapon on the field without forgetting their famous and colorful clothes.
I think that the content of the book is pretty well done as all Osprey books in 64 pages they try to give the most important info from the Origins of the Landsknecht, organization, army life, religion, costume( one of the most important part) and the decline. In a nice weekend you can seat a relax a travel back in time to the days of the "BAD WAR". Nicely Illustrated by Gerry Embleton which famous illustration and knowledge on the subject make the book complete, he have some works on the subject his book Medieval Military Costume is also illustrated by him and with many colour photographs of real models.
A Nice read if you looking for the everyday life of these formidable soldiers of the late 15th century you will find it fascinating. For more Renaissance warfare the book from Thomas Arnold "The Renaissance at War" explore in more detail the wars of this period with alot of maps and Illustration, Osprey have alot of titles on the subject Armies of the German Peasants War 1524-26 by Douglas Miller and Angus McBride and Pavia 1525 are some of the titles you would enjoy if you like to read about the German mercenaries. Lets hope for more titles like this specially on the Swiss, Spanish Tercios and Italian mercenaries.

Book Description
The Landsknechts were German mercenaries who served during the reigns of Maximilian I and Charles V in the sixteenth century. Having signed up, these Landsknechts were read a very detailed code of conduct, organised into companies, paid one month in advance, and sent into battle! Their major weapon was the pike, which could be up to 18 feet in length, but those whose duty it was to advance in the front line carried instead the fearsome Zweihänder; an enormous battle-sword around 66 inches in length! Douglas Miller describes in detail the organisation, tactics, weapons, uniforms and history of these remarkable soldiers.
Customer Reviews:
Here come the mercenaries!.......2007-08-12
This book is a brief but in my opinion interesting work on the infamous German mercenaries who helped make the early sixteenth century in Italy a highly unpleasent time. Despite their often silly outfits, the battles of La Bicocca, Pavia, and Rome show they certainly weren't clowns. I recently had the priviledge of visting Italy and saw several sites connected to the sack of Rome such as the Vatican and Castle San Angelo. Overall, a good read for those interested in the time period.
Good resource.......2007-01-09
This is a pretty standard Osprey book, which is to say a good resource with a lot of valuable information. I liked their other Landsknecht book better (Landsknecht Warrior IIRC?)
A Good Start, but not the Last Word.......2004-05-06
The Landsknechts, by Douglas Miller, is a good basic introduction to these mercenary soldiers and campfollowers of the Holy Roman Empire during the Renaissance. As its original publication was in 1976, its scholarship is understandably outdated. It serves well as an all-around overview of the organization, weapons, tactics, battles, and lifestyles of the landsknechte, and would be a good volume for study by those with a passing interest in the subject. If you are serious about studying, reenacting, or re-creating the landsknechte, I would recommend that you read this book, along with the other landsknecht-oriented Osprey books, and then seek out more serious and scholarly works, especially those of more recent publication. -Anjabeth
An excellent introduction!.......2002-12-29
If you're looking for a single book to start someone off on the path towards understanding everyone's favorite multi-colored mercenaries, this is the book for you. Seriously though, it covers a lot of material that the uninitiated wouldn't even know to look for, and provides an excellent starting point for further research.
A superior Osprey installment.......2002-08-12
This Osprey title covers the elite corps of Holy Roman Emperors Maximillian I and Charles V. Having recognized the puissance of the Swiss mercenaries that brought the mounted knights of Europe to their knees, Maximillian copied their methods. Close order drill with polearms, supported by small arms and artillery. Because of the focus, this book recommends itself over other less useful tomes in the Osprey series. I deducted a star for the once again pathetic maps included. Otherwise worthwhile.

Book Description
The Arizona Breeding Bird Atlas is the capstone of the first comprehensive statewide survey of Arizona's breeding birds. More than 700 surveyors, mainly volunteers, reported a total of 376 bird species during the 1993Â-2000 field seasons. Of those species, 283 were confirmed as breeding and 18 additional species were suspected of potentially nesting in the state during the atlas survey period.
This atlas provides a breeding distribution snapshot for each of Arizona's nesting bird species at the end of the twentieth century. Bird populations change constantly due to environmental factors and human activities. The data compiled in this book will serve as a baseline against which to judge future changes. It also provides a wealth of natural history information.
Each of the 270 two-page species accounts contains a color photo of the species and a range map summarizing the breeding distribution records collected during the atlas survey period. The accompanying descriptive text and graphs provide nesting habitat information and a timeline chronicling each bird's breeding phenology and migratory status in Arizona. Another 47 species are briefly discussed. Additional chapters describe atlas methods, results, and Arizona ornithological history, as well as topography, climate, and habitat diversity, which ultimately govern bird species distribution in the state. Useful to land managers and biologists, the atlas will also be a resource for birders and educators and will increase public awareness of Arizona's vast avian life.
Examines over 270 species of birds known to breed in Arizona, complete with color photos and nesting and migratory data.

Arizona Breeding Bird Atlas.......2006-11-04
At last, the definitive guide to breeding birds in Arizona. Well written with beautiful photographs. A must have reference for the serious Arizona birder and avian ecologist.
If you're into birds buy this book........2005-11-03
Excellent book, love it so far. Lots of great info as well as nesting locations and life histories for all the nesting birds in Az. As a student of wildlife biology/ornithology this book has already come in handy a few times. The only thing I would change is maybe better pics, or diagrams to help in identification. Overall though, I would definately suggest this book to anyone interested in ornithology. BUY IT!
The New Authority on Arizona's Birds.......2005-10-06
If you don't have it, GET IT! The new authority on Arizona's breeding birds has rode into town!
Stunning.......2005-09-19
Arizona has been a dream destination for birders and ornithologists for a century and a quarter. Since the publication of the first Lane guide more than 30 years ago, traveling birders have benefited from the availability of a number of "birding Baedekers" for finding the state's many specialties. But what of birders who want to go beyond simply listing the Arizona rarities? With Phillips et al.'s excellent monograph on the distribution and status of Arizona's birds more than forty years old, and the most recent annotated checklist pushing 25, local birders and visitors alike have often found it difficult to place their sightings in context.
Now come Corman and Wise-Gervais, and their corps of well over 250 volunteer 'atlasers', with the first major reference work on the state's birds to appear for a long generation. Well designed and richly illustrated, the new Arizona Breeding Bird Atlas (or, to use the faintly discoish acronym, ABBA) fully deserves the place of honor it will occupy on birders' bookshelves, next to the magnum opus of Phillips, Marshall, and Monson.
Field work for the ABBA was begun in 1993 and completed at the turn of this century. Given the size of the state and the low number of observers available in all but the most densely populated areas, a system of "priority" blocks was developed for the surveys; the difficulties and the sampling methodologies developed to overcome them are clearly described in the book's introductory matter, as are the criteria and definitions used to document each species' breeding status.
While the book covers only those species known or suspected to have bred in Arizona, the splendid maps and well-illustrated habitat descriptions will be tremendously useful even to birders who visit the state only during non-breeding season (a nearly meaningless concept for species such as Lesser Goldfinch, which nests nearly year-round in the desert lowlands).
The results are published in a series of clearly structured species accounts, each occupying a full opening and each with a photograph of the species and a dramatically large, easily interpreted map showing the locations of breeding records. The species portraits are strictly speaking not necessary, but with only a few slight clunkers in the lot, they do add considerably to the visual appeal of these pages. For many species, convenient graphs showing habitat distribution and breeding phenology are also provided.
Although contributed by 19 different authors, the prose accounts show a uniformity of style that is greatly to the credit of the editors; only in the short anecdotal paragraphs beginning each account does the voice of the individual author intrude, sometimes charmingly, often less so. The 'meat' of the accounts is rigorously structured, with a detailed description of the species' habitat preferences followed by a clear summary of each bird's breeding biology in Arizona, including full and often carefully analyzed information on timing, nest construction, and behavior; this is simply great stuff, and it is high praise to say that over the last weeks I have found myself consulting ABBA in such matters as often as the online version of Birds of North America.
The accounts conclude with a discussion of the map data; many of the most interesting comments here are those directed at the apparent absence of certain species (the mysterious Lewis's Woodpecker, for example) in areas where they might be expected to breed. Careful readers will note many opportunities for research into new topics.
Among the appendices is a nearly 20-page bibliography, an extremely welcome addition to the resources available on Arizona ornithology.
