Comprehensive Commercial Focus on Real Estate.......2002-03-24

I took Jack Corgel's course in the Hotel School at Cornell. We used the third edition of this text, and it covered the spectrum of concepts for a basic introduction to real estate investment. Even though the course focused on commercial real estate, I found the concepts have helped me determine whether I have made good choices in residential real estate, as well. The best aspect of the book (and the course) was applying a discounted cash flow analysis to particular properties. As a method to assess the financial viability of a property by analyzing the rent, tax, depreciation and other effects, the discounted cash flow analysis helped me feel much more confident in my real estate investments.

The book covers four basic areas: investment principles like net present value, real estate markets, mortgage financing, and legal aspects of real estate. Although not flashy with lots of pictures, the essential concepts and methods are thoughtfully explained and applied. I highly recommend this book as a reference to keep on your shelf to refer to periodically if engaged in the acquisition of real estate.

The Buffalo Soldier played an important part in the US Army's operations during the “age of American Imperialism”, between 1898 and 1916. These men campaigned against the Spanish in Cuba, Filipino insurrectionists on Mindanao and Mexican border raiders. They went on to distinguish themselves in the trenches of World War I, and the sum of two divisions of these Doughboys fought with the French Army and the American Expeditionary Force. This book offers a succinct history of these units and the campaigns in which they fought, and it highlights the African-American US soldier, his uniforms and his gear throughout this era in rare photographs and carefully reconstructed color illustrations.

The Last Buffalo - Heartwarming.......2000-10-18

I have the pleasure of just completing The Last Buffalo by Eva Hogan. It was heartwarming to read the love and admiration the author holds telling her family's story, and of Mr. Walter E. Potts, the author's grandfather. I thoroughly enjoyed the historical notes which spoke of our nation's role during the Great War, and how the author intertwined her grandfather's military career.

As a reader, I was facinated by the Potts' family history as an example of so many others. As an American, I loved the way Ms. Hogan educated me on parts of our history of which I knew little.

Ms. Hogan inspires us to research our own family histories, to uncover our own personal stories. I feel that I have grown to know Mr. Potts personally, and am amazed by his dedication and love for his country, people and family. Thank you for sharing his story.

I actually read this trash.......2007-09-13

This guy is an imposter, he is trying to be William L. Sullivan who is an incredible author and has a book called Listening For Coyote where he actually completes a 1300 mile hike inside Oregon rather than bail out of a short hike across Eastern Oregon to finish it in his Jeep as this author did.

He complains about land being closed to hiking and his Jeep and then closes his book with a chapter on vandalism.

He also imitates Mr. Sullivan by including the references to coyote and the legends about him which I know where in the fantastic book Hiking Oregons History, one of my very favorite books.

I am not a friend of Mr. Sullivan, I have never met him, I only know that his books are loved by me and many of my friends and that this guy has tried to rip him off.

Besides William L.Sullivan also check out anything by Ralph Friedman, his books are becoming historical already but they are wonderful and very much worth reading.

Excellent Bird Book.......2007-06-27

My wife and I observed several species of birds in our neighborhood and we simply wanted to know what kind they were. We're not serious birders (yet). Another review on another site suggested a certain book "if you're only going to have one bird book." We have that one too, but this is the book we go to first. It provides all the information on a particular bird concisely on one page in a uniform format throughout. It has answered all our questions so far (two months). This is the book to have if you're only going to have one bird book. We're not smart enough to vouch for its technical accuracy. It's nice to round out the presentation with a second book, but we prefer this one.

Disappointing.......2007-05-15

I am a very amateur birder, but as we are planning a move to Texas I wanted to know what types of birds we might encounter there. I thought this book would be the best choice, but I was disappointed. The pictures of the birds are very well done, but the habitat map guide is not helpful at all. It is of the entire US, not just Texas, and many of the birds in the book are not even shown as having Texas as a habitat. The insets of similar birds is a good idea, but is way to small to be of much use. I guess I'll have wait until I get to Texas and look through books at an actual bookstore in order to find a good guide.

Great Texas Birding Book.......2007-02-12

For the beginner birder or just someone who wants help identifying birds, this is a very good guide to add to your library. The descriptions, pictures and information are excellent. It covers just about anything you want to know about birds of Texas such as the song, behavior, breeding, nesting, flight pattern, and a map showing the range. As an added bonus you can list on the specific page when, what time and where you have viewed the bird. Love the book!

Great reference guide; not-so-great field guide.......2005-03-09

I really like this book. However, it is not my first choice when out birding. It has some great features, including detailed information on habitat, population, attracting to feeders, etc. However, there is often only one picture of a bird; this is a photograph rather than a drawing, which has advantages and drawbacks. Sometimes, it is easier to idetify from a drawing and other times you just need a photo. I do like the feature that gives you the birds size and silhoutte. I do like the one bird per page feature but it does make the size cumbersome. Therefore, I use this as a reference guide to be kept at home and compare my notes against when I come back from the field. I also am a big fan of the section at the bottom of the page that allows you to record information about sighting the bird in question. Great as a reference, but if you need a great field guide go with Sibley.

...to give as a gift, because I'm so pleased with it.

Unlike some of the other reviewers, who seem to have a great deal of expertise and several bird books at-hand, I'm just a casual observer of the visitors to my backyard feeder. This is the first bird book (ahem, field guide) for me, and I don't see that I'll need to seek other titles any time soon.

As with most Dorling-Kindersley publications, the photos are great (these show male, female, and juvenile examples), the layout is engaging, and the text is informative. One helpful feature for a novice like me: Next to a picture, there's often a notation of something like "often mistaken for.." so you can look up those other species to compare details.

I'm not really interested in an encyclopedia about each bird; I just wanted a handy reference, and this book serves that purpose admirably.
