Book Description
In Speck, Peter Buchanan-Smith, Art Director of the New York Times Op-Ed page, asks artists, designers, lawyers, writers, collectors, and photographers to explore our obsessions with the small objects that loom large in our everyday lives. To wit: Maira Kalman empties people's pocketbooks; Nicholas Blechman and Jesse Gordon trace the history of the oldest piece of dust; David Horrowitz catalogs manhole covers; and Peter Buchanan-Smith unearths a 1966 high school yearbook and transcribes the inscriptions ("To a real sweet and cute guy with a great personality. Remember English III"). Speck also shows how "ordinary" people can fascinate as much as "ordinary" objects: an interview with shoe shiner Harry Kitt, Manhattan's last practitioner of the dry-shine, photographs taken by a blind man on a sight-seeing tour, and a barber's extensive collection of earth, water, and air from around the world ask us to re-think our assumptions about the commonplace.

Book Description
From 1870 to 1935, the first true catalogues raisonnés of Rembrandt's paintings were produced, incorporating the results of individual connoisseurs' evaluations of authenticity and quality. This book, the first full-length study of this scholarly corpus, concentrates on the written connoisseurship of Wilhelm von Bode, Abraham Bredius, Cornelis Hofstede de Groot, and Wilhelm Valentiner, whose articles and catalogues first shaped the modern conception of Rembrandt as a painter. In addition to analyzing their written work, Scallen addresses the social context of their connoisseurial practices, as shaped by their museum careers and their relationships with dealers and collectors.

Customer Reviews:
Amy Vickers - Knows her subject.......2007-04-04
I have found myself lately in the loop of western conservation literature, and with all the talk of water I really only found one place to go. After coming across Vickers in a state of the world book I looked a bit further until I found the handbook. This book, which is basically a textbook, really answers those burning questions you wanted the answers to. For example, if you find that you have ever wondered exactly how much water low flow toilets save, and the dollars required for replacing them as well as the dollars saved, this book is for you. If you ever considered what the office would be like with waterless urinals, and it's impact on water consumption per person in the office, this book is for you! This book escapes a lot of the chit chat and gets to the answers that you seek. Be warned, this is an academic book with real applications, facts, and statistics that are heavily researched. Don't pick up this book if you want to hear a fairy tale of how a drop of water from one of the poles made it's way to the kitchen sink. Pick up this book if you want to carry on intelligent conversation about water conservation solutions with modern day technology, pick up this book if you want to take that step forward in the home or at the office. There is a lot to be said when it comes to intelligent water usage in a big picture perspective, this book can shed some light on that perspective. It also allows the individual who wants to make a difference at home to look into how to do just that.
Excellent, essential, and practical!.......2003-12-09
Amy Vickers' Handbook of Water Use and Conservation is for everyone who wishes to survive and prosper in our dehydrated future. A model of excellent content and design, this serious professional book reads like Popular Mechanics because of its easy manner and attractive presentation. Along with essential data on water use, it provides a myriad of water saving measures. It is wonderfully well-illustrated. Sidebars, quotes, and factoids (often humorous) are sprinkled throughout. This is the rare book that has truly universal appeal. Water and landscaping professionals will use it continually. Facility and business managers will find that it slashes water bills. Farmers will use it to make wiser irrigation decisions. Public and college libraries will want a copy for students, instructors, and water-savvy homeowners. There is no better way to get a quick and thorough education about this subject that is critical to our survival. This is the only water book that most people will ever need!
Handbook of Water Use and Conservation.......2003-07-28
To call Amy Vickers "Handbook of Water Use and Conservation" EXCEPTIONAL would be an understatement! As the Water Conservation Program Director for our town, it has been an invaluable source of information. I reference the book at least a half a dozen times a week and refer to it as my water "Bible." Thorough and very well written, it comprehensively covers residential, landscape, industrial/commercial/institutional, and agricultural water use and efficiency measures. I especially like the case study examples of efficiency measures and savings she references. In addition, the book provides a plethora of additional sources and organizations to contact for more information. Although relevant to all sectors (e.g., homeowners, industry, etc.), the book is a MUST for all water utilities and conservation professional's reference library. As a water utility and/or a professional in the water conservation field, to not own this book would be a disservice to yourself and your trade.
An interesting, comprehensive guide.......2002-02-01
This excellent book would be a useful guide for homeowners and water professionals alike. It provides a wealth of technical information about conserving water for homes, landscapes, industry, and agriculture. A casual homeowner interested in minor changes to conserve water may find this book to be too technical, but a committed homeowner who is interested in comprehensive indoor and outdoor water conservation will find that this book contains all the information necessary to implement a conservation program. In addition to being an outstanding technical reference, this book is actually *interesting* to read. The text is clearly written with excellent photographs, and is peppered with relevant quotes and facts. Amy Vickers' book belongs on the shelf of every person interested in water conservation.
How to get the most use out of the least water.......2002-01-13
Amy Vicker's Handbook Of Water Use And Conversation is a vast, scholarly, yet eminently practical guide and reference work enabling the reader to skillfully get the most use out of the least water, whether one is attempting to conserve for one's home, business, industry, or farm. Black-and-what photographs and diagrams illustrate the many topics discussed herein, from optimal plumbing adapters to legal and economic incentives for water conservation. The Handbook Of Water Use And Conservation is enthusiastically recommended for anyone with environmental concerns for water quality and usage, from lay homeowners, to agriculturalists, to municipal authorities, to corporate C.E.O.'s.
Book Description
This is an invaluable source for educating professionals and families about helping children regain security in times of trauma. Using a solutions-based interdisciplinary approach, this illustrated book explains how children react to specific types of trauma and how to work with a traumatized child. The nationwide movement toward School Crisis Response Teams, the DSM-IV’s new category for post-traumatic stress, and the use of EMDR for treatment are covered.
Book Description
Sagebrush Soldier is an account of military life during the Indian Wars in the late nineteenth-century West. Private William Earl Smith describes daily camp life, battle scenes, and the behavior of famous men--Ranald Mackenzie and George Crook--in public and private poses. He covers the war from the enlisted man's viewpoint, as he worries about what he will eat, how he will keep warm in freezing conditions, and how he will keep calm when bullied by the sergeant major, of whom he says he would give "five year of my life to [have] walked up to him and smacked him in the nose." Sherry Smith assembles a balanced, comprehensive history by incorporating the testimony of officers, Indians scouts and allies, and their enemy, the Northern Cheyennes.

Book Description
Women in Power profiles 22 women who have been world leaders since 1960. Biographies of these political leaders are embedded within regional analyses that reveal not only the personal circumstances that each woman faced in her quest for power but also the political milieu from which she emerged. We learn about the obstacles as well as the advantages these women faced, and we derive insights into the structures that exist in our own societies regarding the power relations between men and women. Women in Power also devotes a chapter to differing theories of women's leadership and various theories of feminism around the world. Finally, in an effort to understand how the United States can appear to be the bastion of women's liberation around the world and yet have only 15 percent representation of women in power and no female president to date, the authors explore prospects for the upcoming 2008 U.S. presidential election and discuss potential candidates.
Book Description
From the macaws of South America to the cockatoos of Australia, parrots are among the most recognizable, and endangered, birds on earth. But until now, no easy-to-use guide existed for the identification of all species and subspecies of these colorful creatures.
Enter Parrots of the World, the most comprehensive handbook for distinguishing some 350 species of parrots from across the globe. Lavishly illustrated, with more than 120 color plates and additional illustrations, the book covers parrots in homes, zoos, and in the wild, providing detailed descriptions of their key identifying features.
By allowing readers to easily narrow their search to specific geographic areas, the book will prove especially useful to those interested in parrots of a particular locale. Descriptive distribution maps show the geographic location of the different species, and an entire section is devoted to ecological and behavioral information relevant to identification. In addition, the guide differentiates Old World and New World species and points out significant sex or age differences in plumage coloration.
Parrots of the World will provide enormous help to those engaged in gathering important field data and monitoring international trade, two initiatives that are of critical importance to the conservation of parrots worldwide.
Clear, complete, and colorful, this is one guidebook that no museum, research institution, zoo, or bird enthusiast will want to be without.
Key Features:
- Easy-to-use, geographic guide
- Treats some 350 species
- Color distribution maps for all species
- Lavishly illustrated, with more than 120 color plates and additional illustrations
- Includes ecological and behavioral information
Customer Reviews:
Great service.......2007-08-28
Book as described and would be more than happy to order again as service was great.
New Forshaw.......2007-04-11
A gorgeous book. More usable than the previous edition: physically smaller (still a coffee-table book, but lighter & smaller - binding should hold up now), much more up to date, no more hunting for pictures. Downsides: text refers to color plates but color plates don't refer back to text, and a short bibliography (
<100 cites. It does cite the previous edition and Juniper & Parr, each with over 700 cites, but you'd need those to track references). Compared to Juniper & Parr's Parrots: A Guide to Parrots of the World, it's cheaper, more recent and better for phylogeny; but has less information about each species and doesn't cite references for each species. The larger size allows an elegant layout but makes it a poor field guide.
Classic reference.......2007-02-12
This is a classic reference book and is an unmissable volume in any bird lover's library. The colour plates are beautiful, and it provides substantial information. All in all a lovely book to have!
Parrots of the World: An Identification Guide by Joseph M. Forshaw.......2007-01-04
The Parrots of the World: An Identification Guide by Joseph M. Forshaw is an excellant book that shows beautiful color pictures of the Parrots, tells where the Parrots are from with a colored map of the area they are originally from in the wild. Also the book tells in detail the color and size of the Parrots. I would highly recommend it for anyone interested in recognizing the different Parrots.
Excellent Color Guide to Parrots.......2006-11-11
This book has great pictures from several angles of the species covered. It is not extremely thorough, so if you are interested in one species in particular, I would recommend getting a book specifically on that species. Otherwise, it's an excellent reference to have around.
Book Description
This superbly illustrated book is the first created primarily for field identification of the 350 species of parrots of the world, from the mighty macaws to the diminutive pygmy parrots. Along with range maps for each species, the book includes information on the ecology, vocalizations, life cycle characteristics, and geographical variation of all species and on the conservation status of parrots that are threatened or endangered.
Customer Reviews:
Unbeatable Reference on WILD Parrots.......2003-11-09
I was long wondering whether to buy this book or not, but it was well worth getting.
The species accounts are incredibly detailed and it must have been hard work to collect all that data.
I have field experience regarding parrots in Eastern Indonesia, and found this book to be amazingly up to date about the status of species occuring there - so I trust it is similarly accurate about parrots in the rest of the world, too!
Not a good guide.......2002-08-13
I own parrots, I have friends who own parrots, and I have a brother who breeds parrots. I feel I can knowledgably say that this is not a good guide to parrots. It is full of mistakes both in the text and in the illustrations. I was very disappointed when I went through this book and, fortunately, I did not buy it but got it through the library. If you want info about this group of birds buy the standard, Forshaw's Parrots of the World, and just realize that the information about ranges and scientific names might be out-of-date but overall this is the better book by far. It deserves no stars.
A Terrific Guide to Parrots!.......2001-04-07
This is got to be one of the best guide books I have ever seen featuring over 350 different species of parrots on our planet. Being the bird lover that I am, and that includes domestic as well as wild birds, I own almost every book out there on birds, and I really love this edition by Tony Juniper & Mike Parr. It should really be called an encyclopedia because there is just so much information in these almost 600 pages. The 88 superb color illustrations of all the species by 5 different artists are so beautiful & true to life. As you already know by reading the editorial & other reviews, this book includes range maps of the species locations, their vocalizations, life expectancies, and much more fascinating information.
Remember, this is not a book about parrots in captivity, its information about birds in the wild. If you don't own a parrot and are thinking about one, this book is a definite help in learning about all the different species that are out there. The more knowledge you have the better it will be when you do decide to pick out that perfect companion parrot for yourself & family. Owning a companion parrot is a lifetime commitment that shouldn't be taken lightly. I know I researched many months before I found the perfect parrot for us. The love you receive in return from your parrot will amaze you. I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars. Highly recommended!
The Encyclopedia for Parrots.......2000-06-13
This is the first book I bought on Parrots and it is the only I would ever need to learn about the different types of Parrots in the world. It contains information and pictures on every type of Parrot from the African Grey to the rare Kakapo. I only wish they had an indication on the price range of each bird on the market for those who breed and sell. I would definitely recommend this book to the serious Parrot collector. A definite must on a Parrot lover's bookshelf and worth every dollar.
Excellent addition to any naturalist's library.......1998-10-28
This book belongs in the library of any naturalist or bird lover. The plates are wonderful with vivid colors that serve to identify the various species. The text provides concise information on natural history, a map of each species' range in the wild, its conservation status and other information. This book could be used in the field or as a comprehensive reference book on these remarkable birds. The authors must have poured a phenomenal amount of work into researching and writing this book. Buy one for yourself and another for a friend.
