Any one interested in Stone Circles should read this book! It is just not another coffee table edition. This is an excellent study in circles, their meaning and how they were constructed.

There are detailed accounts of travelling to many stone circles around the world - new and old, with even chapters on how to build a stone circle and the alignments.

An excellent new, fresh look at the stone giants that haunts us today and their relationship with our lives.

I can hardly wait to start laying out my own little "stone henge" and with this book I now know how! I always wondered how they did it, now thanks to Rob Roy, not only do I know how they did it, but now I know how I can do it too! Rob provides history, lore, safety tips, labor saving "secrets" of the ancients, great anecdotes and practical and technical instruction on site selection and preparation, stone selection and preparation, constuction of safe and durable megalithic structures, and even a human and spiritual side of the subject that can be quite energizing. With this book anyone can find their own connection to our ancient ancestors! In addition to all the information provided, this book also harbors some very phenominal photographs of both ancient and modern megalithic structures around the world. Rob Roy's book, Stone Circles, is perhaps the most comprehensive and masterful work on the topic of stone circles by a living author today. There is much more to megalithic stone circles than just the movement and placement of massive dormant objects. When properly placed, they become permanent monuments to a timeless spiritual perspective. Considering our fragile and tenuous hold on life, we humans, especially in modern times, would do well to learn about and understand these marvels of engineering, determination, and dedication. Rob Roy's book gives us all a good place to start.

Years from now, when I'm asked what books impacted my life in major ways, I'm sure I'll immediately list "Stone Circles" as one of them. This is partly because the book came along at a time when I was developing an interest in standing stones and sacred places but mostly because it treats megalithic architecture as a living art: not just a phenomenon from the past to be studied, but a way to connect, as the ancients did, with the earth and with the cycles all around us. This book truly is a "modern builder's guide to the megalithic revival." It speaks of ancient standing stones at Stonehenge, Avebury, the Orkneys, and other sites, but concentrates primarily on contemporary stone circle builders and on practical information for doing this ourselves! It's filled with incredible photos and the stories of contemporary megalithic architects and builders, as well as a wealth of technical information. Thank you, Rob Roy, and thanks to all of your colleagues for lighting a flame in me - before, I had an interest in megalithic architecture, now I am an (amateur) "megalithic anthropologist." That means that I have an interest in the study and application of how human culture and big stones interact - not just in the context of the past, but here and now. This book contains many hilarious "hang in there" pictures with animals looking stupid. It's a good gag gift for office workers, school teachers, or people who like to put funny things on their living room table. The only problem with it is that it's only about the size of a DVD case.

Endearing, comforting, cool.......2005-04-08

This hardcover book is a compilation of retro posters of kittens and other animals, most with phrases, like, "I wuv you," and some repeating, "Hang in there." The poster art in this book reminded me of the genuine heartfelt effort put into handicrafts some friends and lovers give each other, especially early on in a relationship. Those who appreciate cuteness and whimsy will enjoy this book. This is a great comforting book to give to a friend, relative, or signifcant other particularly when they are sick, feeling down, and/or adapting to a stressful situation.

Endearing inspirational artwork from the 1970s .......2004-09-07

It's hard to easily categorize Hang In There! by Jennifer McKnight-Trontz, but the endearing inspirational artwork from the 1970s of kids, puppies, kittens and animals blends well with the one-line inspirations on love, hope and coping, making this outstanding collection just perfect for modern times.

Good, basic photography book, though dated.......2006-07-21

I've been using SLR's & digital cameras since early high school, including use for some publication work. This book gives good, basic information, and would be good for a novice just learning to use a film-type camera. My copy is dated 1979, so it includes nothing about digital photography. The other reviewer referred to Chapter 9 as being nothing more than verse or poetry. That is somewhat puzzling as my copy only has 7 chapters. Also, unless there have been more current editions, this book is too dated to ever be used as a textbook for any current college course. However, if you are just looking for a basic reference on basic, film-type photography, or are a new hobbyist with a film camera, this book is certainly adequate, and one could do worse.

Complete tripe........2004-07-15

If you are talking a College level course that utilises this book as the main text, I truly pity you. You will learn more by simple self research via the internet and using your camera over the duration of the course than this book could ever teach you. By the final chapter you are left banging your head into your desk wondering why anyone would ever choose this offal as a required textbook. Don't believe me? Read Chapter 9 and notice that the vast majority of the text is simple poetic musings followed by references back to previous chapters, as the authors were too bloody lazy to expand upon their meager ideas. Pathetic.

I've been watching the art of Gus Fink evolve for quite a while now and I saw the price on this book and figured I'd purchase it. The book is put together without any dialog between the characters yet easy to follow and understand. I love the dark style of both Fink and Reilly.

The defence of the 9th-century kingdom of Wessex under King Alfred against the 'Great Viking Army' is one of the major military achievements of Early Medieval history. Fantastic Guide for the Novice Birder in S.F. Bay Area........2007-02-16

For several decades I have been a casual bird observer in the south San Francisco Bay Area and my curiosity had led me to acquire several of the acclaimed major 'Bird Guides' ( Peterson's, Sibley's, National Geographic, etc.) However, I seldom was able to ID birds I saw with confidence using those guides, there were just too many possible candidates in the guides for each of my sightings and I seldom could narrow down the possibilities to one species. The 'Birds of San Francisco' solved that problem for me.

The 'Birds of San Francisco' guide focuses on approximately 120 of the most common species found in the Bay Area. It allots one page per specie which contains a large color illustration and references to other S.F. Bay Area species that have a similar appearence. There are also very useful graphic keys which quickly indicate the preferred habitats of that specie along with migration and breeding timeframes. Also included is a textual description and behavioural information useful for identification.

The 120 species covered are grouped into 23 (quasi phylogenetic) families for quick look-up within the guide ( e.g. Shorebirds, Woodpeckers, Sparrows, small-Songbirds, mid-size Songbirds, etc. ).

Using BoSF in conjuction with the major guides mentioned above is particularly powerful. BoSF often points me to a candidate specie (while I am still not confident about it) and the major guides provide more variations on specie colorings, subspecies, etc. This usually confirms or dismisses the candidate. In my experience, BoSF starts me on the right trail for identifying my Bay Area bird sightings with confidence over 80% of the time.

At only 156 pages, BoSF is also highly portable compared to most of the major guides, so I am much more likely to take it along on 'non-birding' events.

My only regret about this book is that I did not find it 11 years ago when it was first published (1996).

A Great Beginner's Guide.......2000-06-23

I have carted this book along on many outings since my relocation to California. This has come in very handy for quick identifications and a brief summary of the birds' typical habitats and even their mannerisms.

The main reason I enjoy this guide is that, if the species is included in the book, I can usually find it within thirty seconds. Often times the bird is still in sight and I can easily compare its markings to those found in the guide.

I highly recommend this book as a quick reference guide.
