I loved MAD magazine when I was a kid. And I never got tired of reading the various MAD collection books. This one is typical:
-An Academy Award spoof
-A Drive-In movie Primer
-A few Don Martin comics (my favorite)
-A MAD look at Firemen, by Sergio Aragones
-Spoofs of new Products, new inventions or advertisements.
...And much more.
I still like to read through this book from time to time.

As a real estate agent, I found this book while tyring to change my business model from the traditional 6% commission structure to respond to the concerns of my clients who were willing and more than capable of helping me to sell their home and who expected a financial reward for doing so. This book is exactly what I needed to help me pinpoint the issues and structure a business model that has received overwhelming approval, acceptance, and excitement from my clients!
This book helped me create a fee-for-service business model where my clients pick and choose the services they want for a flat fee. The flat fee structure has saved my clients an average of $16,000 in real estate commissions per transaction! And I am paid a fair value for my services. It's a win-win situation.
It is not a program to discount commissions to get business. Instead, I require my customers to take on many of the time consuming tasks in selling their homes. And they are happy to do it to save the money! In exchange for not using up as much of my time and resources, my clients are rewarded with commission savings and I have more time to do more business.
But the book offers suggestions for many other ways to structure the real estate transaction to save the client thousands while compensating the real estate professional fairly.

The book breaks down into two categories (Home selling) and (Home buying).
You learn about preparing the stage for effective marketing of the property for sale. Teaches you how to gather property information to price it right. Tells you how to pre-qualify the buyer and troubleshoot the sale and close the transaction. The book goes into detail of designing a purchase strategy and game plan. Tells you the in's and out's of mortgages and how to get pre-approved. All in all it is a pretty solid little book. If you are an agent or a homebuyer / seller and have not read this book you have missed the boat.

It is about time someone in the real estate profession wrote a consumer friendly book. This is simply outstanding, and is a must reading for the ever transitory public. Great book for the first time home buyer.......2001-06-12
My wife and I are buying our first home. I bought 6 books on "how to" and "what to do", so we would be informed on the best way to find a home. This was the best book. We hired a consultant to help us with the purchase and we close June 30. This process saved us alot of time and money.

What a wonderful resource. I read this book twice and learned alot from what the author had to say. I purchased two homes in the last 5 years and feel I have not been properly serviced by the professional I used. CONSUMERS must read this book.
By the way, I noticed another review of this book by a real estate agent that did not like what the author had to say. Probably because it is for consumers not real estate agents. In the future, I will hire a professional that has my needs as the goal and not the commision that will be paid to sell me anything with four walls.

A True Story of the Old West, the way it really was.......2003-06-06
Percival Lowe was a gentleman, even if he was not an officer, and he was also a good soldier and a great frontiersman. If you want to know what it was like to be a Dragoon on the frontier this is the book. If you are interested in the history of the US Cavalry you need to read this book.
Military life in the "real" old west........2000-05-08
Percival G. Lowe's account of militart life in the pre-CivilWar west is a must read for the military historian, anyone interestedin American frontier history, or anyone who just likes a good read. Lowe's account is most enlightening because it is written from the enlisted troops point of view. Most histories of the day were written by the officers who were better educated and often said little about the enlisted life on the frontier. Lowe's memoir starts with his induction and training in Carlisle, Pennsylvania and his 3 month trip west to his first post. Just the story regarding his travels to his first duty station include canal boats, river boats, mule trains and just plain old foot slogging marches across a raw expanse only recently opened to settlers from the east and Europe. His writting about his troops escort duty on the early Santa Fe trail is also quite informative. The book is written in the style of the 19th century and is a colorful as well as interesting reading. Well worth the price and time involved.

Prior to reading this book, I gave up on shorebird identification. This book makes it very easy for a beginner like me to ID shorebirds. I love the easy way you identify birds by size and then picture. I'm finding it is now fun to try to ID the shorbs!
Outstanding field guide but not just for beginners.......2007-03-19
This is an outstanding field guide for shorebirds and it is not just for beginners. I have been birding for more than 20 years but I have had limited experiences with shorebirds and I found this small book comprehensive and organized in such a way that it has now become the only book I carry when I'm watching shorebirds.

This book is very helpful for a quide in identifiying shorebirds but still can't figure out what the shorebird with a dark head, light underneath, and a straight bill is.
A good guide for both beginners and more advanced birders........2006-11-10
This is an excellent shorebird guide -- and not just for beginners. I bought this guide for a specific purpose: I lead tours in a wetland refuge and wanted an easy-to-carry guide I could use to show pictures of birds to people on the tour. This book fits my needs perfectly, but many others should find it useful. It is small and easy to carry. The book uses photo illustrations: I believe photos are better than paintings for depicting shorebirds since silhouettes are so important for shorebird identification and it is hard to get the proportions exactly right in a painting. The photos in this book are excellent. Shorebirds can vary greatly in appearance because of plumage variations. This book has multiple photos of most species and does a good job of depicting the plumage variation. This book is less comprehensive than some larger guides, but since it is designed as a beginner's guide, it wouldn't make sense for it to be too long and complicated. An excellent little book.
Stokes Beginner's Guide to Shorebirds.......2006-03-16
I'd actually rate this 41/2 stars, but that choice wasn't available. It's organization is based on a neat color tabbed guide that breaks the birds down by body size and further refines this by bill size. This rapidly narrows choices and speeds comparitive evaluations. The migration maps, both spring and fall, though general in their timing, further help narrow selection. I love this little book! It's lightweight, thin design makes it easy to carry into the field, yet it is wonderfully illustrated with summer, winter and juvenile characterists depicted for nearly every bird. It's only shortcoming - and this would perhaps alter it's small, light, handy character - would be insufficient pictures of the birds in flight.
I purchased this book as a companion to Shorebirds of North America by Dennis Paulson and use the Paulson book as a reference when Stokes leaves me still wondering. The Paulson book, however, stays in the car, both because the Stokes book is that good and because I don't want the more extansive pictures and more elaborate descriptions in the Paulson book getting wet, dirty or ruined.
