*** A Celebration of Rings ***.......2001-08-02

The Ring, what thing could be a more ancient, magical, personal or symbolic object of adornment? Indeed, as other reviewers here have noted, this book is as well crafted, as the subject being researched. This book is elegant, it is a coffee table book which amuses and delights, a visual page turner with a surprise on each new page. People with a flair for the unusual , a passionate ring collector, metal smiths, artisans and professional designers, jewelers, contemporary art galleries, or anyone who loves beautiful things, will really love adding this book to their library.

Eloquently written, the first half of this book is part history and background lesson for the second half of the book. Brief discussion on the ring from 5th century B.C. Summer, Egypt, Greece, Roman, 13th -20th century, and many more chapters, with each topic increasing in length as it approaches contemporary times. Mass Production, Design Constraints, Manufacturing Techniques, Economics and Regulation, Consequences and Strategies are also all touched upon siting examples with regard to France, where the author lives and I might add, demonstrates superior authority on the subject.

The second half of this book is devoted to "Modern and Contemporary Rings" from the 1960's to present day. Really, the larger focus is on this half of the book, and what an amazing array of styles and possibilities on how wild, wacky, sculptural, outrageous, and generally experimental ring design has become. One-of-a-kinds, out-of-bounds, over-the-top, extremely unusual, and very creatively charged designs are presented here in a visual feast. Rings as art, indeed. Sketches, variations on a theme, non-traditional materials (Plexiglas, tracing paper, shells wood, woven metal, bread and Jam! Etc,), are all pictured and covered in this half of the book as well.

Purchase, The Ring, without hesitation, you will be very happy you did.

Sylvie Lambert has created a beautiful, elegant and (wonderfully!) lengthy history of a jewelry staple: the ring. She offers a thorough exploration that spans from prehistoric adornment to contemporary designs. This book will certainly appeal to those in the trade as well as anyone looking for an interesting, visually captivating (dare I say coffee table?) book. As a jewelry designer, I find it to be a handy reference, as well as a source for inspiration, some envy, and much awe. I would most definitely recommend it!!

Experiencing the Wall through photography.......2002-04-11

This book has few words - it's a photographic journey about the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial. What struck me from the photos was how the Wall has achieved a sort of common ground, where conscientious objectors and veterans can both come to pay homage to what was, by all accounts, a tragic war. The photos are curtesy of the Smithsonian. I'm giving this book four out of five stars because I thought the narrative was a bit hackneyed. I wanted the photos to speak for themselves.

This 4"x7" paperback book is a collection of Hägar the Horrible comics by the incomparable Dik Browne (1917-89). Here in this book are many adventures of Hägar, his friend Lucky Eddie, his formidable wife Helga, his beautiful though self-conscious daughter Honi, his bookish son Hamlet, and Dirty Dirk and the rest of Hägar's less than competent crew. In this book, Hägar must face unscrupulous knights, several heavily-armed and angry barbarian hordes, a rolling-pin armed Helga, and (GASP!) a bath!

Recently, while digging through an old box full of books, I came across several of my treasured Hägar books, of which this is one. My children (girl eleven, boy eight) grabbed it away from me, and were soon happily reading the jokes out loud to all present. It is so nice to see that Hägar can entrance the young of today, much as he did me. My personal favorite is when Hägar meets Pierre La Sniff, the famous wine expert, and my children really loved seeing Hägar try to avoid a bath.

We all love this book, and you will too. If you can get it, then do so!

very informative.......2005-06-17

I am a little surprised with TS being a Billion Dollar Industry there are no reviews here....except one plus mine. This book IS expensive, I guess I am lucky I bought it last week when it only cost 37 bucks. Now, I myself am a TS-salesperson and that is why I purchased the book. Now, there is not THAT many pictures in there, but the ones that there are are quite ok. It also features some nice brand-names like Marriott, Hilton etc. For credibility.

I bought the book because I want to use it as a selling-tool. I am not sure if I will actually bring it to the presentation or just read it and learn some facts....anyway, the book will make you appear more knowledgeable because you will be more knowledgeable. It's like a fact-book. It actually sold me on the idea that selling TS is a good thing because the facts are based on thousands of surveys, this is a Ragatz-study. Ragatz is (I think it's not named Ragatz anymore) a RCI consulting firm.
So I guess we are pretty much dealing with the truth here and it kind of verifies that most TS-owners really are quite happy. So bottom-line: selling is about credibility, so if you know more and can position yourself as an expert you will be more credible and like so sell more.

The book is actualy flat. A bit larger in format but flat, not too heavy, one could store it togehter in your case with your pitch-book. Not one hundred percent up to date, from 1998, but enough to throw some facts around and remind you - like so - what the benefits of TS-Owndership really are (I sometimes forget) and some general trends that will certainly hold true today.

This book has excellent,up to date information regarding basic criteria, if considering the development of a time share resort. In an easy to read format,it covers basic timeshare concepts (then and now),site selection,planning and design,marketing,and case studies with informative project data. It has beautiful color photos of popular,top rated timeshare resorts along with their site plans,room decor,floor plans and other amemities.

Captions Sometimes Grossly Erroneous.......2001-06-30

This is an outstanding work with priceless photos of mostly prewar scenes. My primary bone to pick are the captions that the author wrote for the artillery section: he misidentified almost all the guns in the photos or failed to make identifications at all. He should have tried to get more expert help in this area, as identification of some of the pieces is not easy as most of them are 1870's - 1880's vintage non-recoil carriage guns. The photos are facinating and amazingly clear; the captions detract from an excellent effort on the whole however.

For early war interest only!.......1999-11-20

While this book was VERY informative and contains a large amount of photos reflecting hard work by the author, the title is deceiving when it says 1900-1918. It should say 1900 to 1916. There is ONE picture of a soldier in a Stalhelm, and post 1915 gear. If you are looking for early war photos, this book is for you. However, stay away if you are looking for a detaild description of equipment, especially for the post 1916 years.

Amazing photos, great descriptions. I'd like more detail........1999-11-17

This is a coffee table book if ever there was one. It's HUGE. That's great for us picture hounds though. The pictures in this volume are fantastic, covering more areas of the Imperial German Army than you probably thought existed. Commentary on the pictures is fairly informative, and often amusing. I would have liked a more thorough detailing of the gear that the various subjects are wearing, and how these things changed over the course of the war. The color insignia plates are also a nice addition, but some explainations in English would have been useful. As a WWI reenactor (I know, odd hobby), I am always looking for new sources for information on German uniforms, and this is a good one. As this might be part of a series, I'd like to see a future volume that actually details specific pieces of personal gear of soldiers.

Everything You wanted to Know About Hummingbirds But Were Afraid to Ask !!.......2007-10-16

This is a wonderful Book!! The pictures are fantastic!! Makes a great table book but unlike most table books it's full of everything you need or want to know not just pretty pictures. I "Raise" Hummers in the wild and it has provided me with a wealth of information regarding these truly magnificent creatures. I'm constantly referring to it! I wish it wasn't such a beautiful book! That way I wouldn't worry so much about dog earing it up!!hehe!!

AMAZING AND TRULY INFORMATIVE BOOK........2007-09-08

You really cannot go wrong with this one if you have any interest in these wonderful little creatures what-so-ever. I have been watching, photographing, feeding and studying these little birds for years now. It is rather amazing that the author could pack so much information into one small volume and give us some wonderful photographs to boot. We here in Missouri have only the Ruby Throated, but, and I am lucky, I know, we are able to travel to other parts of the country and view other species. No matter how much you know of these birds, you are sure to pick up some new information in this work. As another reviewer pointed out, the photographs are well worth the price of the book. Recommend this one highly.

Don't waste your money........2007-06-02

This book is written as if you had a degree in animal or plant science. It is small enough they should have shipped it in an envelope, but to get more than they asked for the price of the book. They send it in a box the size of a cell phone box so they can charge you $3.95 for S&H. I am very disappointed with the purchase.

Great info on hummingbirds.......2006-11-15

I thought I knew a little about hummingbirds, but I found there was a lot I didn't know. This book is full of information on hummingbirds, their traits, their travel and when they sleep, the size of the eggs they lay, etc. A perfect book for anyone who is mesmerized by these beautiful little creatures.
