This book accurately traces the development and origin of the American Bungalow. Lancaster's essay is informative and thorough. This is a good source book for those wishing to discover and know the evolution of this building type. This is not a 'style book' or a good book for decorating ideas, as the photos are not very clear and there are limited interior shots

          Book Description

In this daring book, the author proposes that artistic and literary forms can be understood as modulations of wave forms in the physical world. By the phrase “natural syntax,” he means that physical nature enters human communication literally by way of a transmitting wave frequency.

This premise addresses a central question about symbolism in this century: How are our ideas symbolically related to physical reality? The author outlines a theory of communication in which nature is not reached by reference to an object; rather, nature is part of the message known only tacitly as the wavy carrier of a sign or signal. One doesn’t refer to nature, even though one might be aiming to; one refers with nature as carrier vehicle.

The author demonstrates that a natural language of transmission has an inherent physical syntax of patterned wave forms, which can also be described as certain “laws of form”—a phrase used by D’Arcy Thompson, L. L. Whyte, Noam Chomsky, and Stephen Jay Gould. He describes a syntax inherent in natural languages that derives from the rhythmic form of a propelling wave. Instead of the “laws” of a wave’s form, however, the author speaks of its elements of rhythmic composition, because “rythmos” means “wave” in Greek and because “composition” describes the creative process across the arts. In pursuing a philosophy of rhythmic composition, the author draws on cognitive science and semiotics. But he chiefly employs symmetry theory to describe the forms of art, and especially the patterns of poetry, as structures built upon the natural syntax of wave forms. Natural syntax, it turns out, follows a fascinating group of symmetry transformations that derive from wave forms.

            Book Description

When photojournalist and writer Roby Page first started trekking to Daytona Beach, Florida, for Bike Week in 1985, the counterculture gathering was dominated by rogues, ruffians, and rebels. Now the leather-clad biker rumbling down Atlantic Avenue might actually be a doctor or a lawyer. More than a half-million enthusiasts arrive at Daytona Beach every March, a number swelled by new bikers from the American mainstream.

In Bad Boys and Fancy Toys: Bike Week at Daytona Beach, Page sets out on his Harley-Davidson to search for what it really means to be a biker. Part memoir, part narrative history, and part photo essay, the book not only chronicles Bike Week, but also vividly documents the evolution of two American icons---the Harley and the Biker.

Braving wintry weather on his way to sunny Florida, Page gives us an understanding of the visceral, even elemental thrills of traveling by motorcycle. He tracks the history of the deviant biker image from its origins in the wake of World War II, and the parallel history of the Harley-Davidson Motor Company, creator of the machine favored by bikers. Arriving in Daytona Beach, the author shares the changing carnival of Bike Week through his prose and through sixty black-and-white photographs. Finally, Page joins together with long-time bikers Jinks and Wolfpup to get perspectives on how Bike Week has transformed, and on how the dramatic increase in new bikers has changed their culture forever.

Managing the Web-Based Enterprise is for managers who are embarking on launching a Web strategy, or getting a solid handle on one that already is in place. Although its focus is on the big-picture issues, the book includes numerous specific suggestions and warnings to steer business professionals who have yet to find their Web legs.

Managing the Web-Based Enterprise begins with very general discussions, such as "What Is a Web-Based Enterprise" and "How People Use Computers and the Web." These sections help the reader take a look at the whole medium from an analytical point of view.

Most of the content is presented in series of suggestions, terminology coverage, and tips, with two or three paragraphs of explanation. This format lends itself to readers who are used to analyzing information systematically--or have little time to read computer books. Brief "Why This Matters" sections in most of the chapters break the issues down to executive summaries.

Readers who are somewhat familiar with Web technology might find this title a bit underwhelming in terms of technical content. However, those who are new to the world of Web-centric business will find that this book frames the issues of the complete Web life cycle quite well. --Stephen W. Plain

              Book Description

Readers can choose from among many books that guide them through the technology on which e-commerce relies, but virtually none address the subject from a sound business perspective. Managing the Web-Based Enterprise fills this sizable void, offering managers key insights into the nature and future of commerce on the Web. By demonstrating how technology can contribute to success or failure, this book trains readers to make good decisions about technological investment. More importantly, it re-emphasizes the business principles-both traditional and not so traditional-that must be brought to bear on any Web-based project, whatever the technology involved.
Though addressed primarily to managers, Managing the Web-Based Enterprise will also equip Webmasters and Web application developers with the business sense they need to maximize the value of their contributions.

              Key Features
              * Provides a managerial roadmap to site design and maintenance
              * Unique in the depth of detail included on the business side of Web site development
              * Webmasters will learn what the issues confronting their managers are, and how to resolve them
              * Managers will learn what matters - and what doesn't - in Web site design

Despite all the gloomy news about e-business, our company is jumping in and this book made it so much easier. We tried to get help from a consultant who cost us many times the cost of this book and was of practically no use at all - talked over our heads most of the time and was not able to say anything clearly even when it was perfectly simple. Skip the "experts" and try this book.

1 out of 5 stars Not for Managers, Not for Enterprises.......2000-11-28

I have never been more disappointed with a book purchase. I have been a Web project manager since they were just "Web pages" and have grown with the profession to becoming a Web-based "enterprise" manager. Based on the book summary in this and other venues, including its own cover, this book promised to provide an encapsulation of the process and techniques that would help streamline my own processes and enhance my professional library. This could not have been more misguided.

The author used very few specific, real-world Web project examples, and when these were invoked, they almost always referred back to the author's company's own Web site. It would be impressive or at least appropriate had the example Web site been an "enterprise" system of applications, functionality, backend integration, usability and design; however, it was a simple site with HTML pages, which, though the book purports they are dynamically rendered from a database, may as well have been static for the flatness of the content --not customized, not personalized, not data-driven. More sincere would have been to describe the site content as contextual, but certainly not dynamic.

The word "enterprise," although overused these days, has at least kept its generic meaning of some sort of intense undertaking, or a comprehensive, integrated endeavor. So placing the word in the title of the book implies that the content will reflect that same or similar thread. I am appalled that instead, I was treated to oversimplified arguments using non-industry-standard language; the endorsement of entry-level development tools like Front Page and PageMill; less attention paid to content than to hit counters (which have no place on an Enterprise Web system); and pedantic discourses on, of all things, hyperlinks. If a reader needs to be taught that hyperlinks will generally have a different color and be underlined, and that clicking on one will load the page into your browser, replacing the page you're currently viewing, then the reader is not an enterprise-level manager, but is rather your neighbor selling beanie babies on AOL.

Furthermore, the writer is a frames apologist, which raised instant and vivid red flags on my amateur detector. The author acknowledges that there are reasons not to use them, but he pushes for them anyway; he does not say that the reasons are, namely, proven unreliability in search engines, difficulty in printing, and poor usability in terms of bookmarking, nor that frames have been considered "cheats" to creating good, simple, clean, professional code. He mistakenly asserts that download speeds are faster with frames than using single pages, though an expert knows that navigation buttons and other images are cached and reload quickly. He does not pass along for the reader's benefit the idea that though they remain supported by browsers, frames have been widely dismissed in the professional Web development world.

This review may beg the question of why I bought a book like this if I considered myself such an "expert." I maintain an office library for my clients, who often require solid documentation to support decisions that I as a manager, my designers, or my developers may make. It goes without question that when I can point to not my own but a published "expert's" educated recommendations, along with a high-profile, professional Web site to corroborate, the confidence factor for the whole project increases. (In that light, may I recommend Collaborative Web Development by Jessica Burdman, and Creating Killer Interactive Web Sites -- not the similarly titled David Siegel one, but the one by Andrew Sather, Ardith Ibanez, and Stefan Grunspan, who excelled at producing real enterprise sites before they were called that.) These types of books are absolutely valuable to beginners and experts alike.

I don't question that this book could be helpful to a newbie: there are practical guidelines to steer the poor marketing guy thrown into creating a Web page through the morass of questions and confusion and political messes in corporate settings. I think that the inexperienced person who seems to be the target for this book would be a lamb led to slaughter if the project truly were an "enterprise" system. And for the person even barely experienced enough to run an enterprise Web project, this book is not only underwhelming, but it's also misleading, elementary, and poorly supported by professional examples, all of which make it inappropriate to its cover copy, target audience, and cost.

Jesse Feiler has done it again. I have read two of his prior books and was again impressed by his clarity and his special knack for formatting and presenting information - he makes it easy to understand and to apply. Having played a role in a major site launch, I wanted to fill in the holes in my knowledge in preparation for the next go round. Jesse covers all the bases. Although the book is superb for executives approaching this responsibility for the first time, it's also a valuable reference for the already initiated. Best suggestion: give copies to all of the key people in your organization - it will make them more comfortable and enhance their contribution.

5 out of 5 stars The Next Best Thing To An On-Staff Consultant.......2000-08-24

Having Feiler's book "Managing the Web-Based Enterprise" by your side as you contemplate or stage a Web-based launch is the next best thing to an on-staff expert. Feiler doesn't just tell you what to do. He tells you why - the pros and cons- when - carefully sequencing each stage - and how - in detail. It's the most comprehensive, logical and user-friendly book on managing the process I've read. Other books focus on parts of the process. This one brings them all together.

This book is precise and to the point. The book is very well written, organized very well and has one object in mind - helping you to learn real estate rules and passing the salesman exam.

The Real Estate Primer is also an excellant tool for somebody who wants to improve their knowledge of real estate terminology, laws and procedures.

After each short chapter you will find questions which can easily be answered or you may choose, as I did, to fill in the answers and then study the question with the proper answer thereby reinforcing your understanding of the chapter.

I passed the exam the first time after reading through this book. I have used it many times since for review and to look up specific areas.

It is A MUST for anyone taking the sales exam.

Loritts' easy to read tribute to his father is a "must read" for any father who is striving to not only "talk the talk" but "walk the walk" with his own children. This down to earth story gripped me from the beginning and I couldn't put it down until I had read the whole book through in one sitting. You won't be dissapointed by learning the lessons that Crawford Lorrits has to offer about loving God and sharing that love with your family.

                      Book Description

From November 1942 through to May 1945, the backbone of the USAAF’s medium bomber force was provided by the clutch of bomb groups equipped with the B-25 Mitchell. First seeing action in North Africa in the wake of Operation Torch, and in the Battle of El Alamein, the ‘bombing twin’ proved to be one of the most successful allied combat types in the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations (MTO). The first of four volumes planned for the Combat Aircraft series on the Mitchell, this title includes first-hand accounts, 30 colour profiles and more than 100 colour and black and white photographs of the B-25 in the MTO.

                                    Book Description

China is one of the largest countries in the world, covering 7% of the earth's land surface, and encompassing a hugely diverse range of habitats. As a result it boasts a rich and diverse avifauna, including some of the most spectacular and fascinating birds to be found anywhere in the world. John MacKinnon and Karen Phillipps' important new guide will be the first truly comprehensive, taxonomically modern, and fully illustrated field guide to the birds of China. Over 1300 bird species are illustrated in 128 original colour paintings, by Karen Phillipps and Dave Showler. The species accounts stress the key points for field recognition and give a full description of the plumage, voice, range, distribution, status, and behavioural characteristics for every bird, with additional descriptions provided for hundreds of subspecies. Colour distribution maps are provided for all illustrated species. The book also includes a useful introductory section that presents a background to the ecology of China, a brief history of Chinese ornithology, and plenty of practical hints on birdwatching in China. The guide's portable format means it will fit easily into a backpack or pocket. John MacKinnon lived in China and Hong Kong for eight years, and has extensive experience of watching and writing about Chinese birds. He has been working in ecology and conservation in Asia for over 30 years, and his work in China included co-authoring the master plan to save the Giant Panda and its habitat. He has written and co-authored many books on the natural history of Asia, including a number of other bird guides. Karen Phillipps was born in Borneo, lived in Hong Kong for over 20 years, and has illustrated several other books on the birdlife of the region.

5 out of 5 stars A bible for birds in China.......2001-10-24

A Field Guide to the Birds of China is a must for any traveler who wants to identify birds in China. De Schauensee's earlier Birds of China is not really a field guide although it provides useful background reading. A Field Guide to the Birds of Japan includes a lot of the species occurring in eastern China, and the Beijing area is included in most of the range maps, so if you don't have the MacKinnon-Phillips new guide, this is second best.

All species of known regular occurrence somewhere in China are illustrated in excellent drawings by Karen Phillips, all but a few in full color. Colored range maps are on the page facing each of the 128 plates. The text for each species provides a detailed description, voice, distribution and status, habits (useful), and in some cases a note on taxonomy.

I used this book for more than two weeks in China during October 2001 and confidently identified every bird I got a decent look at. (Regrettably, eastern China is not exactly overrun with exotic birds, but you can find some interesting species even in the cities.)

The most noticeable problem with this book is its sheer bulk; at 256 pages of plates, 586 pages of text, and some front material, this monster tops out at well over 800 pages and won't fit in most fanny packs, not to mention pockets. So taking a utility knife with a new blade, I sliced the spine following the last plate and taped the last page to the spine, creating a book of front matter, 10 pages of introduction and all the plates and range maps--a tad over a third the thickness of the whole book. A few species are illustrated in black-and-white in the text, so I xeroxed those (with their black-and-white range maps) and pasted them below the range maps of appropriate plates. I left the text home.

The book is not without minor errors, of course. For example, the range maps on plate 35 mistakenly call the Red Phalarope the Red-necked Phalarope, with the same error in the scientific name (although, curiously, the Chinese name appears to be correct). Both species are illustrated. On plate 56 the illustration of the Red-throated Loon is mistakenly marked with the species number of the Common Loon (which is also illustrated and correctly numbered on the same plate). On plate 72 the female Japanese Paradise-flycatcher is so marked but the symbol for the male is missing. Most users can figure out such slips.

                                    ...

                                    5 out of 5 stars Essential.......2001-01-21

This book is absolutely essential for any birder who plans to visit any of the regions covered in this guide. The plates are very good and the descriptions are detailed. This is probably the most up-to-date guide for the region. The taxonomy is based on Sibley and Monroe, and nearly all subspecies and their ranges are listed. There is even an edition in simplified Chinese available in China and Hong Kong. However, covering such a broad region has its drawbacks, and at least in Taiwan, I recommend that this book be used more as a reference than field guide. A bird's voice often varies across its range, and the status of a species in one location can be completely different in another. For example, the White-bellied Green Pigeon, described by the book as "very rare," is in fact common in Taiwan. The quality of the plates is sometimes inconsistent (e.g. the geese and swans on plate 7 look very small!). Also, errors I've noticed include where the range map does not correspond with the descriptions (e.g. Eurasian Jay, plate 67), the bird number on the plate does not correspond with that of the range map and descriptions (e.g. Varied Tit, plate 88), and some typos (e.g. Pygmy Wren Babbler subspecies, plate 105). Although Appendix 2 lists the species endemic to the region, it left out at least three species from Taiwan (Yellow Tit, Collared Bush Robin, and Taiwan Whistling Thrush). In general, this book is excellent and highly recommended, but I do hope a new edition will be published in the future that fixes the errors and include new discoveries made since publication (e.g. Chinese Crested Tern, Taiwan Bush Warbler).

5 out of 5 stars Well Done Field Guide.......2001-01-04

This field guide is a well done book introducing the birds of China to its readers. It is fairly standard as far as field guides goes in content. The book contains 128 color plates depicting the birds of China with the corresponding range maps opposite the plates. Next, the descriptions of the 1329 species are given. Herein lies the major problem with the book, the descriptions are not adjacent to the plates; however, had the book been arranged in this manner, the number of pages would have at least doubled and the book is already a bit cumbersome for use as a field guide at its present size.

A couple of other bits of useful information in this book include a map detailing vegetation type and an introduction to the region. Also, a list of protected and endangered species is included. For researchers, a nice bibliography is also included. Whether you just want to look at birds from a country you never plan on going to, or if you intend to go birding in China, this book is for you.

                                    Book Description

A great variety of birds can be found in China, many of them rare species and some found only in certain districts of China. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China several nature reserves for the protection of rare birds have been established, saving many precious species from extinction.

The author, Xu Weishu, is a member of the executive council of the Chinese Society of Ornithology and its deputy secretary-general. His vivid and interesting account of the variety, distribution and habits of China's birds is complemented by nearly a hundred colour photographs. The book will prove rewarding for the general reader as well as bird specialists.

1 out of 5 stars Birds in China lacks substance.......2007-09-30

I had hoped to find a simplified guide (sort of like the U.S. Golden Guides) which would enable me to identify the most common birds I would see on my recent trip to China. I am a fairly good birder in the US, but knew that I would not have the chance to do more than spot really common species in China. This book is watered-down ornithology and of no use as a field guide. The pictures are of poor quality. The "check list of the birds of China" is useless, as it does not identify individual species, rather it simply gives the number of species in families.
The only other guide I could find is very expensive and heavy -- unsuitable for a traveler. I have not been able to locate what I wanted.
