scholarly books aren't always "pretty".......2000-10-12

This book is a volume in a scholarly series designed to present the largest number of pictures and plans at a reasonable price (I know, $30 is hardly cheap, but look at some prices for scholarly books). It is not meant to be much fun. Sorry!

Art and Architecture in Russia.......2000-09-05

I'm very disappointed in this book. Except for the cover, there is not a single colored picture. The text is difficult both because it is too technical and because the type is too small. For a $30 soft cover book, I expected stunning pictures of Russia's fascinating architecture and art, accompanied by interesting text. Each museum in Russia has a beautiful, full color book at a much lower cost than this one. If you get to Russia, make sure you buy everything you want there, because there seems to be nothing comparable available in this country.

This anthology focuses on the ethical issues surrounding information control in the broadest sense. Anglo-American institutions of intellectual property protect and restrict access to vast amounts of information. Ideas and expressions captured in music, movies, paintings, processes of manufacture, human genetic information, and the like are protected domestically and globally.

The ethical issues and tensions surrounding free speech and information control intersect in at least two important respects. First, the commons of thought and expression is threatened by institutions of copyright, patent, and trade secret. While institutions of intellectual property may be necessary for innovation and social progress they may also be detrimental when used by the privileged and economically advantaged to control information access, consumption, and expression. Second, free speech concerns have been allowed to trump privacy interests in all but the most egregious of cases.

At the same time, our ability to control access to information about ourselves--what some call "informational privacy"--is rapidly diminishing. Data mining and digital profiling are opening up what most would consider private domains for public consumption and manipulation.

Critical Heart Disease in Infants and Children.......2007-07-03

Comprehensive, fresh and multidisciplinary approach makes this a unique and useful text for students and young faculty. Chapters are for the most part well written and the book is nicely updated over previous addition.
Should be a part of the library for clinicians who care for children with congenital heart disease

This book explores the turbulent years before Irish independence, the 1912 Crisis and the emergence of edward Carson's Ulster Volunteer Force as a resistance force to Irish home Rule. It goes on to look at the emergence, after the partition of Ireland, of Protestant and Loyalist vigilante groups in the 1920s to 1950s, and then in the 1970s, the development of the Ulster Defense Association. The political aspirations of the various groups are also discussed within the context of opposition to any perceived changes to the status quo in Northern Ireland.

An informative book about the rise and defeat or the UDA/UVF.......2006-03-29

This is a good book about the rise and eventual defeat of Northern Ireland's main Loyalist (Prodestant) terror groups.

The book details the two main groups, the UDA (Ulster Defense Association) and the UVF (Ulster Volunteer Force). Both groups originated in the 1970's (Although the UVF has historical roots dating back to the Anglo/Irish war) and were responsible for hundreds of innocent deaths in Northern Ireland from 1970 to this day.

According to the book, the UDA and UVF were weakened during the 1970's by a campaign of assassination launched against them by the IRA and INLA. During the late 1980's and early 90's, both the UDA and UVF became highly active again. The book speculates (as many others have) that the resurgence was due to training, arms and information from the British Army and MI5, both of whom had been unable to achieve any lasting success against the IRA. The British hoped to use both terror groups as proxies against the IRA, but the IRA renewed it's assassination campaign against both organizations resulting in at least 50 high ranking UDA/UVF leaders being killed throughout the 80's and 90's. It is believed that this assassination campaign convinced the UDA and UVF to follow the IRA in dclaring ceasefires in 1994. Overall this is a highly informative and well written book about the savagery and eventual failure of the Loyalist terror groups.

Why are not more books written on this subject?.......2006-05-22

An army is only as good as the ability of its commander to supply it in the field. Sick or starving soldiers make poor fighters. Guns can not fire without ammunition and maintanence.

This delightful book covers the subjects of the American revolutionary war armies' supply systems quite well.

Highly informative. Well organized. Well written. Easy to rad and understand.

Should be required reading for anyone interested in militery history and I am not just talking the American revolution.

This is excellent guide book to have if ever you in southeat asia.

Not the book for the serious birder.......2003-04-19

While it is nice to see the birds in the flesh with real-life pictures of them, it is certainly not pratical for use in the field.

Some of the pictures are poorly taken and it is highly difficult if not impossible to identify certain birds. Some of the images are back-lit, giving a silhouette of the bird!

There is no proper classification and very little info given of the birds - how the juveniles look like, breeding plumage, male/female plumage etc.

I suppose it is a good book for the casual birder who would like to know what's chirping outside his apartment window or chalet in the wilderness. It also comes with some interesting information on where to go birding to catch wetland or passerine birds etc.

I must commend Strange though for all his efforts into going into the field to capture these pictures - all pictures in the book were taken by Strange - good job Strange!
